President’s Message
SIDNEY MATHIAS CBJ PRESIDENT
I am still filled with joy and continue to be spiritually uplifted from our recent "Shabbat Under the Stars" which was held at a new location this year, the JCC Elaine Frank Apache Day Camp. We had over 300 people for our BBQ dinner and then a wonderful shabbat service conducted by Rabbi Zimbalist and Hazzan Ezring, and our Beth Judea band. So many people attended, and our diversity - from young to "older," families to singles, long term members to prospective members - created a beautiful group. With the spiritual message of our Rabbi, the vibrant and creative music from our Hazzan and band, the beautiful evening, and, of course, our shared Erev Shabbat Meal, the setting was perfect to have this wonderful celebration. Thank you to all who attended and helped to make this evening happen!
I can't believe that summer will be ending soon, and our high holidays will be commencing shortly. We are so excited to welcome Rabbi Zimbalist and Cantor Ezring as they join Rabbi Lifshitz and Cantor Weisberg to lead us on our holy days. We look forward to sharing our new beginnings with joy and ruach! We will start the High Holiday season with study, prayer, and dessert at our Selichot services on September 1st at Congregation Beth Judea. A discussion starts at 9:00 p.m. followed by a desert reception at 10:00 p.m. and services at 10:30 p.m. If you are planning on joining us, please call the CBJ office at 847-634-0777 or email lneiman@bethjudea.org. Our Tot High Holiday Services are on Rosh Hashanah Day 1, Monday, September 10th and on Yom Kippur, Wednesday, September 19th. Both services are from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. at Buffalo Grove High School. These services are free and open to the community, but reservations are REQUIRED by contacting the CBJ office by phone or email. The services are being led by Brad Egel and Erica Veronie. Our Community Yizkor service will be held on Yom Kippur Day, Wednesday, September 19th at 12:45 p.m. at Buffalo Grove High school in the cafeteria following the family service. Everyone is welcome. Congregation Beth Judea Men's Club is sponsoring several events during September. As part of our High Holiday spirit, we will have Project Isaiah, sponsored by Men’s Club, for our congregants. Please take a bag as you leave services on Rosh Hashanah and return it filled with food on Kol Nidre, September 18th. Please be cognizant of the "needed" items. All food is donated to the Ark. Volunteers are needed to help hand out and collect bags. Please call Fred Rabinowitz at 847-398-5488 or email rabino49@aol.com. Project Isaiah gives life to the Jewish traditions of tzedakah (charity) and tikkun olam (repairing the world.) Our Men's Club is again building the Sukkah at Congregation Beth Judea. Please come help them on Sunday, September 16th between 10:00 a.m. and noon. Then, please come and help take down the Sukkah on Sunday, October 7th between 10:00 a.m. and noon. RSVP to Ron Friedman at r.friedman@sbcglobal.net. Also, "Steak, Scotch and TRIVIA" will be held on Sunday, September 23rd beginning at 4:30 p.m. at CBJ. The cost is $55 per person, and checks are payable to "CBJ Men's Club" Please check the weekly CBJ email for more details. (continued on next page)

Shiva Baskets
NEW!! WAYS & MEANS
Sunshine Fund
CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity
The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.

Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? We Are So Blessed!!! At first glance, one might have thought that this article was going to be about the upcoming High Holidays. While I am not going to lie that the High Holidays are top on my mind right now and we will have incredible teen services and discussions, we have been blessed in an entirely different way. You may or may not have seen the various news going out about CBJ youth recently. The good news has just kept pouring in. Check out the major things that have happened below: Blessing 1: CBJ Youth dues are now FREE for all CBJ members! We have been incredibly fortunate to receive a special donation from four member families that is covering the cost of youth dues for every single youth aged member of our Beth Judea family. The best part is that each of the families have guaranteed to continue this program for at least three years. This means is that you will no longer be asked to pay additional dues to become a member of any of our three incredible youth groups. When your child is in the middle of second grade and ready to be part of Kadinkers, they will automatically be a member of Kadinkers; when your child is in the middle of 5th grade and ready to be a member of Kadima, they will automatically be a member of Kadima, and when your child is in the middle of 8th grade and ready to be a part of our award winning USY program, your child will automatically be a member of USY. This is such exciting news and is part of why we are so blessed. So, what do we need from you when it comes to this. We need you to send your kids to all of the incredible programs we have. We are starting new things this year - like a fourth Wednesday of the month Kadima lounge night (in addition to the other Kadima programs), a Cubs vs. White Sox game, an International Culture exploration night,
The Word – September 2018
social action projects galore like Soup and Sandwiches in the Sukkah where we will make sandwiches for A Great Harvest Shelter. There are so many programs of different kinds; we urge you to please find a program to send your child to and have them try us out. For 8th-12th grade, we have an incredible opportunity to go to Second City for only $20 for a VIP private show on Sunday, September 16th. The point is all of this great programming needs your kids. Don’t see the type of program that you want? Let us know and we will create it. We want all youth at CBJ to have an opportunity to get involved. Blessing 2 and 3: CBJ Youth has received USCJ's first ever Chapter Innovation Grant. This grant is allowing us to hire a new staff member to specifically focus on growing and developing our Kadima and Kadinkers programs for grades 3-8 to help ensure the strength of our youth program for many years to come. Check out more information about the grant by clicking here As a result of the grant, check our our new expanded youth team!!! Youth MEET OUR NEW AND RETURNING YOUTH STAFF Allison Goldstein – Youth Advisor Hi everyone. I'm so excited to start my second year as a BJUSY Youth Advisor. I was a member of BJUSY when I was in high school (in the stone age according to the kids). I proudly served as the Israel Affairs vice president my senior year of high school. I then went to spend four amazing years at the University of Iowa, where I studied political science with minors in Spanish and philosophy. When I wasn't in class, I was a proud member of the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority, where I served as the vice president of social standards and responsibility. I spent a lot of time at Hillel, where I was the co-president my senior year. After I graduated, I came back home and completed a semester of paralegal school. I now have a full-time job as a paralegal in the city. When I'm not working, you'll probably find me watching sports or reading a book. I'm looking forward to spending another year as a BJUSY Youth Advisor because the program did so much for me and I am hopeful to give that back to the kids. I can't wait to begin the year. Eric Golberg – Kadima and Kadinkers Coordinator
Hi. My name is Eric Golberg, and I will be the new Kadima and Kadinkers coordinator for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. While in high school, I was very active in BJUSY, where I held the position of co-president during our 2010-2011 Chapter of the Year run. Since then, I have lived in Hartford, Connecticut, where I attended the University of Hartford with a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Elementary and Special Education. After graduating, I taught both third grade and special education in West Hartford, Connecticut. We will be offering many great new programs and events throughout the year, so be on the lookout for updates!! I am incredibly excited to get started and can't wait to meet all of you in the upcoming weeks!
Marc Sender – Youth Director I am incredibly excited to be returning for my 12th year at Congregation Beth Judea and my 9th year as Youth Director. I have now been a member at Congregation Beth Judea for over 30 years, and I love it just as much today as I ever have before. I, myself, am a product of our Hebrew school, having graduated back in 1996. I have been heavily involved in Congregation Beth Judea all of my life - going to Kadinkers and Kadima events myself as a kid and then serving on the BJUSY Executive Board throughout high school. I have also been teaching in the Beth Judea Hebrew school for the last eleven years. I have a teaching degree from Northeastern Illinois University, where I graduated summa cum laude. You will also often see my entire family around Congregation Beth Judea as we feel like it is our second home. My wife, Shira, taught in the Hebrew school for a number of years and now runs the Junior Congregation program. My oldest daughter Lauri, who just turned 7, is in the second-grade class in the Hebrew school, and my son Teddy, who is 4, and youngest daughter Naomi, who is 2, are regulars at the synagogue both on Shabbat and throughout the week. I am so excited for this year to begin and can't wait to see all the amazing things we are able to accomplish with our new and returning staff back in place!

Sisterhood Hag sameach everybody! While September is a busy month for all of us, Sisterhood takes a step back in order to breathe and to give us all a chance to celebrate our many holidays with friends and family. We’ll start the month with Selichot services on the first Satuday night of the month, September 1st. Of course, there’s Rosh Hashana from Sunday evening through Tuesday, September 9-11. And let’s not forget Yom Kippur from Tuesday evening through Wednesday, September 11-12. But wait! There’s more! Start planning your sukkahs because Sukkot starts on Sunday, September 23rd and ends with Simchat Torah on Tuesday, October 2nd. It’s a busy and wonderful time of year! Just a little reminder that we do not conduct any Sisterhood business on Shabbat or the first two and last two days of our Jewish Holidays. Other than that – enjoy!!
We would like to take this time to thank our amazing Rummage Sale chairs, Helene KatzRatzkoff and Sandy Goldenberg, and their entire hard-working committee for a job well done. This year was the first time the sale was held on two days, Sunday and Monday. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who volunteered your time and effort to making this our most memorable rummage sale EVER!! Ladies, we CANNOT do this without you. You are all AWESOME! On behalf of the Cohn and Goldenberg families, we wish you and all your loved ones a happy, peaceful, prosperous, and healthy New Year. May we only know joy and happiness in the coming year. Men’s Club The days are getting shorter, the nights cooler; kids are back in school – summer’s just about over, and I wonder where it went. And coincidental with the publication of this month’s WORD, Selichot is observed the evening of September 1, thereby ushering in the new Jewish year 5779 a few days later. Throughout the synagogue, preparations are underway for the High Holy days that will certainly be memorable as the rookie clergy team takes center stage to be ably assisted by the veteran Rabbi and Hazzan Emeritus (or is it Emeritim?) The Men’s Club also has a busy month in September. On Sunday, Sep. 16, we will be undertaking the mitzvah of reconstructing the sukkah. All able-bodied adults are cordially invited to join in this spirit (and wall) raising event. Following two days later on Sep. 18, Kol Nidre evening, the Men’s Club sponsors Project Isaiah. The purpose of this worthy project is to collect food for those unfortunate people who are in need. Bags will be handed out at the end of Rosh Hashanah services which can then be filled and brought to Yom Kippur services where they’ll be collected by volunteers. Your generous contributions will be very much appreciated. Then, on Sunday, Sep. 23, the Men’s Club hosts one of the year’s most popular and entertaining events – Steak & Scotch in the Sukkah. This year’s event will also feature other adult beverages like bourbon, whisky, and beer to appeal to those who aren’t Scotch aficionados. In addition, throughout the evening’s program, a Trivia contest will be held - the winner of which will be handsomely rewarded with prizes. Check the flyer elsewhere in the WORD for more info. Whew, all that and the Days of Awe, too. On that note I would like to personally reach out to anyone whom I offended, slighted, or otherwise hurt in any way and ask for your forgiveness.

And in the spirit of the Yom Tov, both Jean and I want to wish everyone L’Shana Tova Tikateyvu v’Tehateymu: may you and yours be inscribed in the Book of Life for the year ahead, a year of health, happiness, and peace. Before ending though, and as promised last month, I’d like to highlight one of the Men’s Club officers. And who better to start with than the outgoing President, Jerry Sakol. Jerry and his wife Heidi have been CBJ members for 24 years and are the proud parents of two and even prouder grandparents of two. He’s a retired licensed electrician who has lent his professional talents to CBJ in many ways - such as wiring both the solar Ner Tamid in the Beit Midrash and the light in the Memorial Garden. In shul, his contributions are numerous: he regularly leads mincha/maariv minyan services; he’s one of several who are qualified to lead a shiva service; he is a choir member; and a Shirat Shabbat Band member, where his wonderful voice can be heard; and he is one of the co-leaders of the Hebrew Literacy I class. Outside of CBJ, Jerry generously volunteers his time in several ways. He regularly helps out at Horsefeathers Therapeutic, where people with special needs of all ages are provided a supportive treatment program using horses. Jerry leads a Friday prayer service at Arden Courts in Northbrook every other week for the residents at this memory care assisted living facility. For many years he has also been one of the stalwarts who provide assistance to residents at The Lieberman Center in Skokie, so they can attend Shabbat Services. Obviously, Jerry Sakol is quite a guy, and we’re proud and lucky to have him as a valued member of the Men’s Club and CBJ. Ron Friedman Men’s Club President

INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council By Joanne Dicker and Helene Fox, Beth Judea representatives to the Council
L’Shanah Tovah! Best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year. Our next big interfaith event is our annual Thanksgiving Celebration. This year, it will be held at St. Mary Parish on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. It is a wonderful time to gather together with your neighbors in prayer, song, and celebration. Various members of the clergy will be participating, including Rabbi Zimbalist and Cantor Ezring. We have two interfaith choirs: one for adults and one for kids. A bell choir will welcome everyone. There will be an interfaith orchestra and the praise band. After the program, meet your neighbors while snacking upon treats and refreshments donated from many of our local businesses and exceptional bakers in our own congregations. If you are interested in being part of the interfaith adult or children’s choir, please contact the cantor. If you play an instrument and wish to participate, contact Cantor Simon at Temple Chai or Mary Pietro at St. Mary for more information. If you are a baker, your treats are always welcome and should be dropped off at St. Mary’s that Sunday afternoon. Please remember those who are less fortunate. If possible, bring a donation of non-perishable foods to the celebration for those in need. We will distribute the food through our four local food pantries. (Please see flyer on this page).

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
