However, I Attend, so reservations are required. Please can honestly say that seeing everything in a contact Lisa Neiman for more information. two-dimensional format is getting weary.
By now, I hope you’ve received and read my most recent update on what is happening. Thank you to the wonderful members of the CBJ Task Force who are meeting weekly in order to make sure our congregation is responding to the crisis in a responsible manner. The safety of our community is my number one priority. Whether it is working on how to safely have an event in our parking lot, discussions on how the school should proceed, or worshipping in the building, their input and expertise have been invaluable. Please thank the Task Force members which include Arnie Bender, Anna Besser, Herb Finn, Staci Levy, Lisa Neiman, Dr. Ira Sender, Natalie Solomon, and Rabbi Zimbalist. We have been having events, and will continue to have events, as long as it is still safe to do so in the parking lot. I hope you were able to join me for the Concert in the Lot with Rabbi Josh Warshawsky. It was a perfect night to sing, see friends, and enjoy ice cream. Rabbi Warshawsky is joining us as our clergy in residence this summer. I hope you have been able to participate in some of the classes and talks he has led and that you will continue to do so. We are so fortunate to have Rabbi Warshawsky with us this summer!! He will be leading Shabbat Under the Starts on August 28, 2020 which you won’t want to miss!! More information on this event will be sent shortly.
In my recent communication, I spoke about the high holidays. As you know, the high holidays will be entirely electronic this year. Please continue to check your email regarding more information on the 2020 high holidays. While they may be different, they will be meaningful. Different does not mean “bad” or “inauthentic.” “Different” means that we have new opportunities to grow together, learn together, and make our future together fantastic. Thank you to those members who have renewed their membership for the 2020/2021 Fiscal Year. Now, more than ever, we need every single member of our community. If you have not renewed yet, I respectfully request that you do so as soon as possible. If you’ve misplaced the forms or have any questions, please contact Lisa Neiman for assistance. I wish for all of us continued health and safety during this difficult time. If you need anything, please do not hesitate to contact our clergy, our professional staff, or any member of the Board of Directors. HESED COMMITTEE Dear Congregants, We hope you and your families are doing well during the quarantine. At the beginning of this crisis and when our building shut down, Rabbi Zimbalist was anxious that we, the Hesed Committee, reach out to each and every member in March to find out how you were doing, any clergy needs you might have, to discuss the synagogue’s digital offerings so that you could be connected should you choose, and to let you know that you are a valued member of our community. As the crisis continued, we made another round of calls in May to our congregants to again ask how you were coping. Additionally, the Ritual Committee wanted us to again reach out to find out each member’s technological capability to ensure he or she would be able to participate in our High Holiday services, which will be accessible to us through digital means. We also wanted to find out if you needed washable face masks for your family, which our congregant Debbie Limer so generously offered to make for congregants.
If you need assistance with technology to participate in the synagogue offerings or if you need a cloth mask, please let us know! Between the two outreaches, we believe we reached at least 80% of our membership through either calls or subsequent emails. If you were missed in either round, we deeply apologize—please let us know. Those of you we reached were overwhelming positive about the outreach. These calls could not have been made without the help of our Mitzvah Squad, which was comprised of your fellow congregants. They worked diligently to reach out to you. Their names are at the bottom of this communication. Additionally, since May, the Hesed Committee has been reaching out to congregants to mark happy milestones, such as birthdays and anniversaries. We want you to know you are being thought of during these happy occasions.
Many within our congregation have suffered painful losses of loved ones during this time of social distancing and sheltering in place. The inability to sit shiva, share stories with loved ones, and receive comfort from the community in traditional ways has magnified the sense of loss and grief for some. As a committee, we want to support those who have experienced loss in the congregation. We are discussing ways to help our congregants who are sitting shiva without the comfort of friends and neighbors. As the virus numbers in the state are beginning to fall and we are gradually progressing to new phases, and with the advent of warmer weather, many of us are enjoying the pleasure of once again seeing families and friends in a safe, socially distanced manner. Some of us in our congregational community, however, are too vulnerable to risk even this contact. Perhaps it is even more important for these members to receive ongoing contact from a caring congregant. If you wish for this outreach, please let us know, and we will have a volunteer contact you on a regular basis. We cannot do this, however, unless you let us know. Please let us help you if you- or someone you know- need it! We don’t want you to feel alone. If you would be interested in helping us in the future or have suggestions on how to best meet the needs of congregants or mourners, please contact us at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Religious Education
Anna Besser Education Director
Last spring, when we enacted our remote learning plan, we anticipated a temporary situation. As we came to the realization that this was not shortterm, we pivoted quickly, prioritizing community and relationship building for the Religious School. Our plan was intended to keep us connected for the remainder of the school year and to educate our learners in a meaningful way. Our adult education programs went virtual and offered a rich selection of learning opportunities. During these past five months, we have certainly learned a lot about how to best teach and learn in a virtual world. As we enter the month of Elul, it’s an opportunity for us to reflect and seek connections with each other and our traditions to give us a sense of stability. We continue to offer touchpoints so that we can see each other in “3D” – see SUMMER: FRIDAYS at CBJ. For adult education, we will continue to offer virtual programming. We hope you join us! For the Religious School, we look at our next steps. We want to create an environment, whether in person or online, that fosters learning and continues to build on community while prioritizing the safety of our teachers and students. Our theme for the year is KOL YISRAEL AREVYIM ZEH BA’ZEH; All of Israel is Responsible for One Another. During this unprecedent time, we have an even greater responsibility put on us. We, as a collective group, must protect one another, be responsible in our decision-making processes, compassionate and kind to the most vulnerable amongst us, and we must work together to create a Kehillah Kedosha – a holy community that supports and looks after one another. Men’s Club Hello CBJ. As this is my first Word article, I wanted to introduce myself as the new copresident, along with Brandt Rosen, of the Men’s Club. For those of you who don’t know me, I have been a member of Beth Judea for the past 20 years. Some of you have already heard this story, but when I first joined the shul back in 2000, it was right after my father had passed away, and the only thing I was really interested in was going to services (and the occasional Kiddush). Men’s Club was the furthest thing from my mind and frankly, if anybody would ask me, I would just say that didn’t interest me. Even when people would suggest that I think about this or get involved with that, I would smile politely, say I would think about it, and then not give it a second thought. Little did I know that others felt differently, and they had a plan to get me involved and to join, which, as you can see, was successful. Not only am I the co-president and former treasurer of the Men’s Club, but I am also very involved with many other things at the synagogue as well as the Midwest Region and internationally with the FJMC (Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs). But enough about me. I would be remiss if I did not thank, for the millionth time, our past president Ron Friedman for all the wonderful work that he did while in office. Your hard work and dedication to our club certainly have made it as strong as ever. While Brandt and I can’t fill the shoes that you are leaving, we appreciate how easy it will be to take the reins from you. Mazel Tov and good luck as our new treasurer. One of the projects that we have been discussing for quite some time is a renovation of the Memorial Garden in the front of the synagogue. We have come up with a plan and have presented it to the Facilities Committee and the Executive Board. I am happy to report that Facilities and the Executive Board have both given us their approval to proceed with this project. It will be a wonderful enhancement to the synagogue, as there will be lots of new plants, flowers, and trees along with new benches, lighting, and a water feature. We will be keeping the etched stone and the engraved bricks that are currently in the front. I want to
The Word – August 2020
thank Jerry Sakol for taking the lead on this and for all of his hard work in helping to make this happen. I also want to give a special thank you to Ira and Bonnie Sender for their very generous donation to fund this project. Once completed, the Men’s Club Memorial Garden will be properly dedicated- so stay tuned. There aren’t too many events going on, but for those of you who have the poker bug, we will be hosting a Virtual Poker Tournament on Sunday August 16 (see the flyer in this month’s issue). Thank you to Steve Limer and Allen Harris for putting this together. The tournament will be using the Poker Stars app, and the fee includes a box dinner from The Sandwich Club. If you need more information, please contact Steve or Allen. Another program that we are very much involved with and looking forward to is our Virtual TriRegion Retreat. This past May, we were to be at Starved Rock State Park along with many of our brothers from our Region to learn, pray, and have fun. Unfortunately, that had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 virus. The Midwest Region will be teaming up with the KIO (Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio) and the Tri-State Regions for this event. The Virtual Retreat will be Saturday and Sunday August 1 & 2. As I am writing this article a few weeks before the event I hope that you have signed up for it and had a great time. I will report more on this in my next article, but I wanted to give the chairman for the event, our own Eric Yegelwel, a Yashar Koach for his hard work and dedication putting this together. Finally, while we still can’t have any events inside the shul, I wanted to let you know that we are working on coming up with some ideas to have alternative events - whether they be virtual or outside - so stay tuned. Great things are happening at Beth Judea. Please stay safe and healthy. Respectfully yours,
Rob Lipka BJMC Co-President

Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? A tribute to the life and legacy of Magda Brown This past month the world lost an incredible person. Magda Brown is an Auschwitz survivor who has come to talk to our BJUSY teens on a number of occasions and formed strong bonds with the teens. Much like many others, many of our teens referred to her as Grandma Magda. I encourage everybody to keep her legacy alive by visiting www.magdabrown.com, learning her story, and then continuing to tell her story to all future generations. We should all live by Magda’s three rules: think before you hate, protect your freedom, and be sure to tell the story of the Holocaust and stand up to deniers. Below are some words that I wrote in her memory.
Over the last couple of days, I have been searching for the right words to be able to express the absolute terrible loss this world experienced upon losing Grandma Magda. I have come to the realization that no words can correctly encapsulate how incredible this woman was and always will be. To be clear, Magda was not my Grandma; in fact we were not related at all, but that never stopped her from treating me like her own just as she did everybody who was lucky enough to meet her. From surviving the Holocaust, and specifically Auschwitz, to everything she did after I lived every day of knowing Grandma Magda in awe of her. I am so lucky to have gotten to know this amazing woman and to have been able to call her a friend. No matter what she ever dealt with, she approached every day with a smile on her face and a sense of drive and determination that I have not seen matched anywhere. I watched as this woman would speak to rooms filled with hundreds of middle schoolers, high schoolers, or adults, and the reaction was always the same. Within moments, you felt a connection to her that went beyond her story. Rooms fell silent, hanging on her every word. I remember one of the first times she spoke at Churchville Middle School to a group of about 200 8th graders. The bell rang to send kids home for the end of the day, yet nobody left, instead they all lined up of their own accord to wait to each individually give their newfound Grandma Magda a hug. Magda was just that kind of person. To know her was to love her. For a woman who had been through so much, she always made sure to make you feel at ease and comfortable and could always bring a smile to your face. Nothing could ever keep Grandma Magda down. I watched as this woman got on a plane the day after the shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue and went to Pittsburgh to speak; I watched again as even when the pandemic hit she shifted to adapt to Zoom to address an entire convention of USYers and tell her story. I heard Magda tell her story more times than I can count, yet I was entranced by it each and every time. Magda made it her mission to educate the world about what she lived through during the Holocaust. She spoke to governors, dignitaries, foreign leaders, and even Presidents, and they would all be captured by her story. Yet at the same time, she had an uncanny ability to relate to teens of every generation (even joking with them about taking selfies). At the end of most of her speeches I would usually hear her leave us with three points or lessons.
24
Youth 1. Protect your freedom. 2. Think before you hate- While she would never tell us that it is not our right to hate, she personally chose not to and implored us to think about hatred. She would say that all tragedies of today stem from hatred, and we should do our best to eliminate it. 3. Please continue to tell her story and never let anybody forget. Stand up to those who deny the Holocaust Grandma Magda, those words will always ring true in my head, and I make this promise to you to make sure to always keep those three things in mind. I will continue to share your story and continue to live by the shining example you provided for me. The world got a little bit darker without you in it but thank you for the years of friendship and guidance. Countless numbers of lives have been changed for the better by having you in them.
My deepest condolences go out to Rochelle, Jess, Sarah and the rest of Magda's family. Baruch Dayan HaEmet, may her memory forever be a blessing and may we all find comfort in all the light Magda brought to our lives. While my heart remains heavy and tears stream down my face as I finish writing this I remain thankful for all of the time I got the privilege and honor of knowing you. Thank you for being in my life and for just being you. Love you Grandma Magda! As one small step in making sure that Magda's story lives on, I implore all of you who are reading this to please go to www.magdabrown.com and read all about Grandma Magda's story to learn for yourself about this truly one of a kind woman and then make sure to share her story with all who will listen. INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council by Joanne Dicker, President
I hope and pray that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. I want to thank you for the tremendous support this community has shown to their neighbors by participating in our virtual “i walk against hunger.” During these tumultuous times, you reached out to help those in need. You helped raise money for our food pantries and our neighbors that they serve. Your donations exceeded our last year’s collections and goals for this year. Should you be in need of services or wish to donate food, please see the attached flyer for dates and locations. We are promoting the following programs: 1.
Free Produce for Families in Need: Thursdays in July and August from 12:30 -5:30 p.m. at London Middle School 1001 W. Dundee Road, Wheeling. See the attached flyer.
2.
Book Drive for pre-school children: This summer, we are partnering with the Wheeling Rotary’s book drive for pre-school children. Help the Wheeling Rotary and Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council collect gently used or new books. This initiative seeks to support and encourage parents to read to their children and make books available to them. We also endeavor to help pre-school children gain confidence in their reading ability; in English, Spanish, or both. These books would be made available for free in a variety of community facilities such as laundromats, food pantries, preschools, churches, and synagogues. Did you know that 70% or people in jail or in juvenile court can’t read past the third grade level and 80% of school drop-outs can’t read past the third grade level? If you have books to donate call us at 224-699-0386. See flyer.
3.
Potluck for Peace: Thursday, September 10, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. Join the interfaith community and strengthen interfaith dialogue between Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities through music and laughter. See the attached flyer.

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
