FROM THE RABBI affording all CBJ members the opportunity to expand upon their personal, spiritual, and educational pursuits. Our Executive Committee and greater Board of Directors has been graced by many new volunteers who span the generations from within our congregation. I am grateful to all the members of previous Boards for their dedication to tireless efforts to make CBJ the fabulous congregation that we are today. And now I’m thrilled to work with our new Board to ensure that great things continue to happen at Congregation Beth Judea! Our potential is limitless so long as we believe in ourselves and inspire others to do the same.
I cannot thank you enough for putting your faith and trust in Congregation Beth Judea. I am truly honored to be your rabbi and humbled to work with such talented professional and lay teams. We have successfully raised ourselves up from the uncertainties of the past year, and I am confident that we are prepared to face any challenge that may come our way in the years ahead. As summer quickly draws to a close, please take a moment to recognize, appreciate, and celebrate all that we have accomplished. We couldn’t have done this alone. Rather, we began with ourselves, faced our fears with confidence, inspired friends and family around us, and are now prepared to stand together no matter what comes our way. Shalom l’kulam, Rabbi Zimbalist
NOTES FROM THE CANTOR I am so happy to have arrived at Congregation Beth Judea. There is such a feeling of family, community, and continuity here, and I have been warmly welcomed into this family. You have been through an extraordinary year and a half together and have excelled at providing a loving Jewish home for the students in the Religious School and for the whole community. This personal transition – moving to a new state, house, congregation, synagogue-team – has actually been delightful! I’m enjoying my time on the bimah with Rabbi Zimbalist, and I’m grateful to be able to help with pastoral care and life cycle events. The incoming Board is full of energy and ideas, and Lisa Neiman

and Marc Sender are indispensable guides to the traditions of this community. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how much I appreciate the warm welcome that has been extended to my husband, Lev. He is looking forward to contributing his time, skills, and humor to this community, and the outreach from the Men’s Club is just great!
We are in for another year that will look like nothing we’ve ever seen before. We have all spent the summer making plans for the High Holidays and for the start of the school year. Together, we are ready for the adventure of the coming year.

President’s Message For those of you used to reading monthly messages from Dana, sorry but you’re going to have to put up with me for the next two years as I begin my service as your President. Dana’s ability to provide meaningful updates and/or inspiring messages each month will be difficult to duplicate. Nonetheless, here goes my attempt at the first of (hopefully) many.
HERB FINN CBJ PRESIDENT
At the outset, a brief introduction for those who don’t know me or my family. My wife Lori and I have been members of CBJ for about 20 years. We have three daughters (27, 24, and 18) – all of whom were Bat Mitzvah here. Starting this month, we are empty nesters as my youngest, Rayna, heads to Drake University. Lori is active in Sisterhood, where she is currently Membership VP. I have been on the Board of Directors for 6 years and have held the positions of Vice President of Facilities and Executive Vice President. For my “side hustle,” I’m an attorney specializing in intellectual property. Anyway, enough about me.
I am certain that I speak for everyone as I thank Dana for her unwavering guidance during an extremely difficult time over these last 18 months. Covid threw everything for a loop, and nobody could have predicted how CBJ would fare. Thankfully, Dana, Rabbi, and our entire CBJ staff were up to the task, and Beth Judea is emerging from the pandemic in a strong and unified position. As a strategic addition to our staff, we welcomed Cantor Elizabeth Bat-Sarah to our CBJ family. While with us for only a month, she has already had a deep impact on Shabbat services and our religious school. The partnership between her and Rabbi Zimbalist is gratifying to see develop. She has also become a fixture of the weekly Thursday night-caps – a no holds barred schmooze fest. Please join with your favorite beverage. Although the building was closed and in person activities were limited, we were able to maintain our membership levels and created new opportunities for involvement. We added the Chaver membership category for those of the CBJ family who are not geographically close but want to maintain their connection with us. We provided remote and multi-access programs and educational opportunities for both children and adults. And, while we couldn’t be in person, we quickly figured out Zoom and continued our tradition of daily minyanim – not once, but twice a day. CBJ didn’t just survive the pandemic, it thrived. As we emerge from the pandemic, we will continue to grow by not only continuing many programs from pre-pandemic, but also creating new activities – as the time away from our building has generated new ideas from all of you. Simply, we want to hear from all of you what you think worked, what you think didn’t, and what new ideas you have for CBJ. As a reminder, Committees meet on the following days:

President’s Message You can always check the online CBJ Calendar for a reminder of meeting dates, times, and locations (see your weekly email for link). This is an exciting time for Beth Judea. I can’t wait to see what wonderful opportunities the next two years bring and feel fortunate that I get to be a small part of it. If there is ever anything I can do for any of you -- shul related or otherwise – please reach out by email or phone. L’Shalom

The third Jewllennialz event is in the books! Twenty-three people attended our Paint & Sip gathering (some left before this photo was taken!). We were virtually instructed to complete a beautiful painting of a whale breaching towards the moon. Messes were made, all the completed paintings were equally good, of course, and fun was had by all. A huge thank you to the Sisterhood and Programming Committee for helping to fund this event!
All Congregation Beth Judea members age 55 and over, are welcome to participate.
If you or your Millennial/Gen-Z child or grandchild missed this event and are interested in attending the next, the Jewllennialz committee is in the process of planning a Kabbalah Cookout! Join us for delicious food and Jewish mysticism taught by our very own Cantor Bat-Sarah and meet some more Jewish young adults while you're at it. Date TBD. Email jewllennialz@gmail.com information.

HESED COMMITTEE Congregation Beth Judea is more than just a building. It is a caring community, and we are here to help each other in times of need. The Hesed committee consists of dedicated volunteers who want to support our congregants when they need it most. As such, we offer a variety of services that we hope will be helpful to our CBJ congregants. The committee has five (5) sub-committees, outlined below, that would welcome the opportunity to be of assistance. Please let us know if you need assistance by calling the synagogue office or emailing the Hesed chairs Marilyn Green-Rebnord or Evan Rumack at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. Confidentiality is one of our major concerns, so please do not be embarrassed to ask for our help. Only our chairs and the volunteer will know.
If you are ill — and give permission to our clergy or office staff — we will try to have a committee member call to see how you are doing and if you need anything. This may include a hospital, rehab facility, home, or skilled nursing care visit during your illness. If you need help getting to a doctor’s appointment, religious services, synagogue programs, or such errands as prescription pickup, our committee is set up to help you. While we may not always be able to make such arrangements, we will do our best. Should you have a loss, we will try to arrange for a committee member to stay at the shiva house during the funeral service so the house will not be unattended, and no family member or friend need miss the service. We will be there to accept deliveries, but not to set up the kitchen. Rabbi will ask you if you would like this help when he is contacted. For security reasons, you will be told in advance who is coming to your home. Should you need, the committee will try to arrange to attend the evening minyan at the shiva home to ensure that a minyan is present to enable mourners to say kaddish. Minyan leaders are also willing to help. At the end of shloshim, we will contact you to check in during your bereavement. It is our intention that this period will be marked during the evening minyan by acknowledging your loved one’s name and by dedicating the reading of a psalm to them and inviting you to the service.
We would like to thank our current committee members for their commitment to helping others . Bruce Darin Joanne Dicker Steve Dicker Cathy Feiger (congregant calls coordinator) Helene Fox Marilyn Green-Rebnord (Hesed co-chair) Ellene Lammers (shloshim coordinator) Brenda Levin

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Religious Education Religious School for Kindergarten through Kitah Heh (7th grade) begins onsite, on Sunday, September 12, 2021.
Cantor Bat-Sarah Education Director
As we move towards the new school year, re-enrollments are going strong; we have welcomed some new families, and we have a few more families taking a look at our program. The warmth of this community and the strength of our educational program are major selling points. Most of our teachers this year will be familiar faces who are all very excited to be working with our students again. I have had a great time getting to know them, the Education Committee, and as many parents as possible during the summer. Structure of School in the Fall Kindergarten through 2nd graders will have in-person classes on Sundays from 9:00am - noon. Their access to the building will be prioritized. 3rd through 7th graders will have in-person classes on Sundays from 9:00am - noon, with a remote option with director’s prior consent (no lastminute decisions to access Religious School remotely). 3rd through 6th graders have remote-only classes on Tuesdays, 4:15pm – 6:15pm. 7th graders will have remote-only classes on Tuesdays, 6:15pm – 8:00pm. When we reach a high percentage of vaccinated 7th graders, we will consider being in-person on Tuesdays. Any time that Religious School is in session in the CBJ building, we are requiring everyone in the school area to wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status. When the Relgious School students are using indoor space on the main floor, we will require those in our vicinity to be masked.

Sisterhood We hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful summer weather, reentering our community, and feeling safer. Last month, we hosted Sisterhood installations at a lovely event in Darlene Bikshorn's backyard. Thanks to a large shade tree, everyone was able to enjoy the afternoon (in spite of the heat), and finally able to visit with each other in person. We were thrilled to have Cantor Bat-Sarah join us! Thank you to everyone who attended and made the event so special. Congratulations!, and thank you to our outgoing board members. Best wishes and thank you to our incoming board members. Men’s Club Greetings from the Men’s Club. I hope you are enjoying your summer. The weather, for the most part, has been good and hopefully you have had a chance to get out and enjoy it. As another year at CBJ is beginning and we are back in the synagogue, we are starting to schedule events for the upcoming year (more on that later). We are also starting to think about the upcoming High Holidays (they are quite early this year) which means some fun events on the horizon. Our softball teams are in full swing, no pun intended, and as of this writing, our A team, coached by Michael Levy and Ken Goldstein, has a record of 3-3, and our B team, coached by Allen Harris and Brandt Rosen, also has a record of 3-3. There aren’t too many games left until the end of the season, so hopefully they will have a strong finish and make the playoffs. As a reminder, all games will be on Sunday morning either at 9:30 AM or 10:40 AM. The games will be played on the fields at 1750 Techny Road in Northbrook. Please come out to root for both teams. If you have any questions regarding the teams, please reach out to either Allen Harris or Brandt Rosen. As I mentioned in my last article, the Dr. Jack Rizman Memorial Golf Outing is back! This year it will be on Sunday, August 29 at Buffalo Grove Golf Course. The first tee time is 10:30 AM and we will be staggering the starts at 8-minute intervals. We will also be having a dinner and at the time of this writing, those plans are being finalized. If you are interested in signing up, please see the flyer that is in the weekly bulletin or the Word. If you are interested in sponsoring a hole or making a donation, also see the flyer or contact Alan Harris, Chuck Walcer, Morrie Rizman, or me. On Saturday, June 26, we presented our 2021 Man of the Year and Youth of the Year awards to Steve Limer and Amelia Tehrani, respectively, as part of the annual awards Shabbat. While we couldn’t have this at Apache Day Camp as scheduled, it was still a very nice morning. Again, Mazel Tov to the both of them. We are in the process of finalizing our 2021-2022 Men’s Club calendar. Some of the highlights include: • Building the sukkot (this year we will be having both the drive-thru and the stationary one next to the synagogue) – Sept. 12 • Project Isaiah – Sept. 16 • Steak and Scotch Dinner – Sept. 26 • Tap the Torah – Oct. 20, Jan. 26, and May 11. • Men’s Club Retreat – Dec. 11 & 12 (more on that below) • World Wide Wrap – Feb. 13, 2022 Speaking of the Men’s Club Retreat, this was supposed to happen this past January, but for obvious reasons, we needed to reschedule. It will be at The Ridge Hotel in Lake Geneva on December 11 & 12, 2021. Brandt Rosen and Steve Limer are chairing the event. If you have been to one of these in the past, you know what a great time we have. If you haven’t, I encourage to sign up. While it is only for one evening, we have many wonderful events and programs including: a wonderful Havdalah service led by Rabbi Zimbalist, Hearing Men’s Voices program, a historical trivia session led by Stacie Saks and Bruce Darin, A Saturday evening program (which is still in the works), and plenty of time to just relax and schmooze with the guys. The cost for the weekend includes your accommodations, meals, and fun. Please see the flyer in the weekly bulletin or the Word. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Brandt, Steve, or me. Last time, in 2018, we had 60 guys attend, and I know that we can get at least that many this year. That’s it for now. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy. L’Shalom, Rob Lipka BJMC Co-President

INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council By Joanne Dicker, a Congregation Beth Judea Representative
In May, the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council issued a statement against anti-Semitism on its website. It read, “We strongly condemn antisemitism in all forms-verbal, written and physical. We ask you to join us and support your neighbors. Hate has no place in our community. We condemn the promotion of hate, intolerance and lack of respect for people of different religious beliefs, practices, holy books and holy sites. We will not remain silent and watch our neighbors live in fear-afraid to pray at their houses of worship, send their children to school, eat at a restaurant, go grocery shopping or even walk down the street. Let this month, and the months that follow, be a time of increased vigilance and understanding where we work toward a better future for all of us. Speak out. Take action. Silence implies acceptance and serves to encourage and embolden those with evil intent. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."* The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council stands in solidarity with our Jewish neighbors, friends and colleagues.” *Dr. Martin Luther King We want to thank everyone who participated in our virtual June i-walk against hunger. We had another successful “walk.” The monies collected will go to help support our food pantries. In addition, our May virtual walking tour of Jerusalem highlighted the city’s important holy sites to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Please also note that many congregations have participated in our Milkweed for Monarchs Survival campaign sponsored by Sierra Club and the Interfaith Council. At Congregation Beth Judea, we supplemented our existing gardens with Milkweed and other nectar plants to assist monarch butterflies. Many thanks to Rachel Jordan for her support with this project. Please join us and your neighbors for these upcoming programs: 1. National Night Out: August 3, 2021 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. The Buffalo Grove Park District invites you to spend an evening in support of National Night Out. This evening is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts, and strengthen neighborhood spirit and community relations. Please drop off non-perishable food at the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council’s table. For more information: http://bgparks.org/event/summer/national-night.aspx 2. Book drive: August and September. Check your congregation for book bins. We are working on a book drive for pre-school children. Help us to open their world and their imaginations through reading! We are collecting gently used or new books. This initiative seeks to support and encourage parents to read to their children. We also endeavor to help pre-school children gain confidence in their reading ability, in English, Spanish, or both. These books would be made available for free in a variety of community facilities and shelters. Did you know that 70% or people in jail or in juvenile court can’t read past the third grade level? If you have books to donate call us at 224699-0386.

3. Ongoing: Food Pantry assistance. Please help your neighbors whose lives have been adversely affected by the pandemic economically. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council helps food pantries at Congregation Beth Am, Kingswood Methodist Church, St. Alphonsus, and St. Mary Parish. I am also attaching a flier of requested non-perishable foods and dry goods should you wish to purchase and drop off at the food pantries directly. If you need assistance, I am also attaching contact information for our food and local pantries. 4. Upcoming: Our Annual Thanksgiving Celebration: November 21, 2021!

If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
