HESED COMMITTEE Dear Congregants, We hope you and your families are doing well during the quarantine. As the virus numbers in the state are beginning to rise again, it is important that we recognize that many of our congregants are feeling more isolated than ever. Perhaps you know of members who would benefit from ongoing contact from a caring congregant or perhaps you wish for this outreach. If so, please let us know, and we will have a volunteer contact you on a regular basis. We cannot do this, however, unless you let us know. Please let us help you if you- or someone you know- need it! We don’t want you to feel alone. We continue to reach out to congregants to mark happy milestones, such as birthdays and anniversaries. We want you to know you are being thought of during these happy occasions. If you would like to help make these calls, please contact Marilyn or Evan.
If you need assistance with technology to participate in the synagogue offerings or if you need a cloth mask, please let us know! Finally, we would like to welcome all the new members to our Beth Judea family. Thank you for recognizing CBJ as a warm and welcoming community. While we cannot congregate in person, there are many opportunities for you to become involved. If joining our committee is enticing, please call or mail us. Our email address is listed below. If you would be interested in helping us in the future or have suggestions on how to best meet the needs of congregants, please contact us at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. We wish each of you the best. Please stay safe and use all reasonable precautions to remain healthy. We are one family and need to take care of each other. Evan Rumack Marilyn Green-Rebnord

Hebrew Literacy Graduation
Spencer Isaac Sigal will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, January 9, 2021. Spencer is a 7th grader at Woodlawn Middle School in Long Grove. Spencer has always loved sports, particularly baseball, football, and basketball and has played competitively since he was 4 years old. Spencer also enjoys fishing with his Grandpa, playing Xbox and fantasy football with his friends, and competing with his brother at......everything. For his Mitzvah project, he is collecting sports equipment and games for Project Education Plus. Spencer wants to help provide the same opportunity he has had for kids in the program to enjoy and benefit from sports.

Spencer is looking forward to sharing this special day with his parents Cindi and Mike, his brother Eli, and his grandparents, Zack & Ina Sigal and Robbie & Jay Schonfeld. He wishes he could be with his cousins and other family and friends in person but looks forward to sharing his special day virtually. Spencer is reading Torah in remembrance of his Bar Mitzvah “twin” Georges Segal. Georges was born in Paris in 1938 and was 4 years old when taken away by convoy. He was one of the 1.5 million children who died in the Holocaust and was not able to have his own Bar Mitzvah.
Spencer and his parents would like to thank Rabbi Zimbalist, Anna Besser, his CBJ Hebrew and Judaica teachers, and his fantastic tutor, Kim Abern, for all their support getting him to this exciting milestone.
Congratulations to our 2020-2021 Hebrew Literacy Graduates! Sandy Citron and Sarah Polakow

WAYS & MEANS
Sunshine Fund
CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity
The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Religious Education Baal Tashchit: How Much Do We Waste?
Anna Besser Education Director
In modern times, Tu B’Shevat has come to represent ecological or green issues. Bal Tashchit, Aramaic for “do not waste,” is a Jewish value which means that we are not to waste resources. It is an idea developed from a Biblical prohibition against cutting down fruit bearing trees during war: “When, in your war against a city, you have to besiege it a long time in order to capture it, you must not destroy its trees, wielding the ax against them. You may eat of them, but you must not cut them down. Are the trees of the field human to withdraw before you into the besieged city? Only trees that you know do not yield food may be destroyed.” (Deuteronomy 20:19-20)
And here’s what Maimonides had to say about Bal Tashchit. “Whoever breaks vessels, or tears garments, or destroys a building, or clogs a well, or does away with food in a destructive manner violates the negative mitzvah of bal tashchit” (Rambam, Hilkhot Melakhim 6:10) Another anonymous rabbinic view: “The purpose of this mitzvah [bal tashchit] is to teach us to love that which is good and worthwhile and to cling to it, so that good becomes a part of us and we will avoid all that is evil and destructive. This is the way of the righteous and those who improve society, who love peace and rejoice in the good in people and bring them close to Torah: that nothing, not even a grain of mustard, should be lost to the world, that they should regret any loss or destruction that they see, and if possible they will prevent any destruction that they can. (Sefer Ha-Hinukh, #529) Bal Tashchit is practiced through recycling efforts and general conservation of natural resources. If we were to buy only products that use minimal recyclable packaging, that would exemplify Bal Taschit. Take a moment to contemplate the items we purchase on a daily and weekly basis. How quickly do we use them up? Do we need everything we use? Can some of these disposable things be replaced with alternatives, with things we can use over again? Here are some statistics on American consumption patterns for you to consider. • Americans represent 5% of the world’s population but generate 30% of the world’s garbage. • Americans throw out 200,000 tons of edible food daily. • The average person in the USA throws away about 20 pounds of nonfood waste each week. This includes 11 pounds of paper, 2 pounds of glass, 2 pounds of plastic, and 2 pounds of metals. • Of the garbage Americans throw out, half could be recycled, which is enough to fill a football stadium from top to bottom every day. • Of these recyclables, Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild the entire commercial air fleet every three months, enough steel to reconstruct Manhattan, and enough wood to heat 5 million homes for 200 years. • It takes 95% less energy to produce an aluminum can from an existing one than it does to produce one from raw materials.

The Broken Alliance: What Happened Between Blacks and Jews Tuesday, January 19, 2021 1:00-2:30 PM Featuring Dr. Joyce Witt $15 (Check made out to AJEC) During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s, Blacks and Jews marched together in the hopes of achieving the equality that African Americans had been fighting for since their arrival on the shores of America. It was a dream never to be fulfilled, and Jews, knowing full well what it meant to be outcast and marginalized, took up the cause of their Black brothers. Seeking justice, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Herschel walked arm in arm, leading thousands together across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the March from Selma to Montgomery. That bond between Jews and Blacks is no longer! What happened? Can it ever be repaired? In this 90-minute presentation, Dr Joyce Witt will explore the reasons this breach happened and explore questions for the future of this broken relationship.

Men’s Club Shalom from the Men’s Club. I am writing this article towards the end of Hanukah, and I am reminded of something the Rabbi said during the Consecration Havdalah service. He was explaining to the kids why we start lighting the menorah with one candle instead of all eight on the first evening. He said that, and I am paraphrasing, as we add additional candles to the menorah the light generated becomes brighter as opposed to becoming dimmer. By the last day, we have a very bright light to rejoice with. This makes sense in that when the Maccabees lit the lamp after cleaning up the Temple, they hoped to have enough oil for one day. Miraculously, the lamp stayed lit for eight days. A miracle indeed. What strikes me about this, especially at this time, are hope and light. With the first of the vaccines being administered, it gives me hope that the situation we are in is coming to a close and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It also gives me hope that we will be able to be together sooner than later.
On February 7, Super Bowl Sunday, we will be having our annual World-Wide Wrap. This year it will be virtual and our committee, which includes Norm Kurtz, Orin Rotman, Brandt Rosen, Rabbi Zimbalist, Anna Besser, Evan Rumack, and me, have been working hard to put together a meaningful and fun program. Additional information will be forthcoming.
The month of January is a bit quiet for the Men’s Club, but we do have some things going on. First, I hope all of you enjoyed your Hanukah boxes. It was a pleasure to partner with the Sisterhood in providing the window clings and chocolate gelt. We hope you enjoyed them.
Men’s Club strives to offer something for everyone. As such, we’re always open to new and creative programming ideas that help Jewish men lead rich and filling Jewish Lives.
We resurrected the Men’s Club Schmooze on December 30 and will be having another one on January 13, 2021. This is a chance for you to get together with us and say hi, have a drink, and be together. Our January Schmooze will be baseball/softball themed, and we hope the folks who play on our softball team will join us to reminisce about all their championships. On January 29, we will be holding the Hebrew Literacy class graduation during Friday Shabbat services. Mazel Tov to Sandy Citron and Sarah Polakow on completing the course. You had great teachers in Jerry Sakol and Daniel Landau. We look forward to hearing you chant.
The Word – January 2021
On Wednesday, February 17 we will be having another Tap the Torah discussion. Rhonda Cohn will be the presenter and will be talking about the orthodox practice/rulings on avoiding women’s voices both literally and figuratively. This is sure to be a thought-provoking topic. More information to follow in the coming days. That’s it for now. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy. May 2021 bring hope and resolution of the ills that plagued us during 2020. On Saturday, January 30 at 7:30 p.m., Join COAC, the Children of Abraham Coalition, for a night of comedy. See what happens when a Jew, a Christian, and a Muslim get on stage together. This is a zoom sign up event. (Please see flier) January: Book Drive: We are still collecting and distributing gently used or new books for infants through kindergarten. If you have any books to donate, please contact us. Ongoing: Food Pantries. Please help your neighbors whose lives have been adversely affected by the pandemic economically. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council helps support four food pantries of our member congregations located at Congregation Beth Am, Kingswood Methodist Church, St. Alphonsus, and St. Mary Parish. Your monetary donations are always welcome, but especially needed at this time of year. I am also attaching a flier of requested non-perishable foods and dry goods should you wish to purchase and drop off at the food pantries directly. If you need assistance, I am also attaching contact information for our food and local pantries. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council proudly serves this community. If you have any programming suggestions, please forward them to me or your IFC representatives. Joanne Dicker, President

Hesed Committee
An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call the Rabbi. FOR A LIST OF EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS, AGENCIES AND RESOURCES click here
We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.
Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff. 34
