Rabbi's Reflections Connecting, Learning, Belonging In just six weeks we, and Jews around the world, will assemble in prayer, study, and repentance. The Yamim Nora’im, the Days of Awe, are almost here. The grand theme of those days is the recognition of God’s sovereignty and our responsibilities to God and to one another in response to that recognition. Acknowledging an ultimate morality dictates certain behaviors. During the ten days from Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur, we engage in heshbon nefesh, each of us taking account of our obligations and the distance we need to travel to fulfill them. When we are honest with ourselves, we can see where we fall short and then make specific plans to improve; that process is known as teshuvah. In addition to personal heshbon nefesh and teshuvah, those of us who work for the Beth Judea community as staff and lay leaders continually examine our synagogue’s policies, programs and services to see how they are measuring up. Do they continue to meet our congregants’ needs? Do they lead to higher levels of Jewish learning and an awareness of Jewish values? Are they enjoyable and meaningful? As we look ahead to the year 5776, our staff and Board of Directors are already discussing and planning ways to answer ‘yes’ to those questions. I think that there are three broad areas in which our efforts will be focused: Personal connection, interactive learning, and a reimagining of how we view synagogue membership. We will be innovating in each of these areas in order to continually improve our shared home at Beth Judea. In terms of personal connection, I am pleased to share that we have several new havurot, social groups, that have come together over the summer under the guidance of Evan Rumack. These havurot will share Jewish and secular holidays, host socials at their homes, and mark life cycle events together. We will create new havurot as needed; contact me or Evan for more information. In addition, we are working out details for honoring those celebrating significant birthdays and wedding anniversaries during Shabbat morning services. These and other changes will add the opportunities our members
already have to form and deepen friendships through our Sisterhood, Men’s Club, and Youth programs. We are also experimenting with interactive learning and congregational participation during our Shabbat services. During the Torah service, while the traditional reading is taking place in the sanctuary, the alternative minyan, under the direction of Norm Kurtz, will be meeting in another space to discuss the weekly parshah, ethics, prayer, and other topics. Norm and I will lead discussion on alternate weeks throughout the year beginning after the holidays. We will also be tinkering with the Friday night service, inviting congregants to lead various prayers in Hebrew or English. Our Board of Directors is already at work to examine our dues and membership categories. Our goal is to explore ways to make becoming and staying a part of the Beth Judea community easier for all. We are told that there are thousands of unaffiliated Jewish families in our area; if only 100 joined our synagogue, it would radically alter the social dynamic for the better in many ways. Our Board will be looking at ways to reimagine synagogue membership and will reach out to all of you for input during that process. We are also in the second year of our Me’ah campaign, whose goal is to raise $3 million for improvements to our facility and to establish a major endowment. We are about half way to our goal, and I urge every one of our families to make a contribution that is meaningful to them. Together, this effort will help to secure a solid fiscal foundation for our shul for many years by providing funds to improve programming and outreach to the unaffiliated, among other goals. I am very excited about the coming year, and I once again invite those of you whom I do not yet know to be active participants in our community. Call or email me and either visit me at the office or put aside some time for me to visit you at home. I will only truly feel I have improved my rabbinate year to year when I know more people next year at this time than I do now. I look forward to seeing you at the Yamim Nora’im, if not before. This is an interactive software package which permits our Members to log in to the site and accomplish many tasks. A member can: Look up directory information on any fellow Congregant Update their own profile Register for events Make a Donation online Fill out membership forms View Yahrzeit information By getting full utilization of the software package, Beth Judea will be able to save several thousands of dollars and have accurate information. Students who enjoy learning Hebrew and music are invited to get a head start using the ancient musical phrases known as the Trope System. After getting to know the trope signs, students will have a chance to prepare small portions in the Torah for Gan Shabbat services in early 2016, for the Bet Class Shabbat and Alef/Bet Kallah that spring.

President’s Message Congregation Beth Judea’s Mission Statement Congregation Beth Judea is a welcoming egalitarian synagogue whose mission is to create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members. Consistent with the principals of the Conservative movement, we embrace Torah and our responsibility to serve and support the greater Jewish community, the community at large, the United States of American and the State of Israel. ARNIE GOLDBERG - CBJ PRESIDENT
It is a privilege to be writing my first article as President of Beth Judea. These are challenging times for the entire Jewish community as well as all organized religions. Over the past two years, I have pondered our Mission Statement knowing that on July 1, 2015, as President, I would have the responsibility to lead the Congregation in fulfilling our Mission Statement and to insuring our sustainability for the next 50 years. As we examine our Mission Statement, we should define and clarify each segment. Let’s start with “welcoming and an inviting home.” It is my belief that CBJ needs to be an inclusive Congregation that welcomes everyone, regardless of their sexual preference, physical limitations, or whom they choose to marry. This inclusivity applies to all our congregants. We need be to welcoming to all, not judgmental. Additionally, Our Mission is to be “consistent with the principals of the Conservative (Masorti) Movement.” The Conservative (Masorti) Movement asks that we conserve those Jewish practices as they are spelled out in the Torah and have been interpreted over the years. Every congregant has their own level of observance, and we ask that when you are at CBJ, please keep in mind and adhere to the principals of the Conservative (Masorti) movement and be respectful of these principals.

There are many different ways for you to serve the Jewish community, the community at large and the State of Israel. Tikum olam, financial support, volunteering, and assisting in sustaining the efforts of Jewish organizations which support both the Jewish communities and the State of Israel are excellent opportunities to be involved. I recently had the opportunity to attend “Sulam for Presidents” with fourteen other Synagogue Presidents from the Midwest region and four support staff of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. We had ample opportunity to discuss the challenges that all Conservative (Masorti) congregations across the country are facing. I now have a network of colleagues to turn to when we our confronted with questions or need ideas. I look to forward to serving as your President and to hearing from and meeting every congregant. When you are at services or events, please introduce or reintroduce yourselves and share your thoughts or ideas with me. Also feel free to call or email (arnieccc@gmail.com) me with any concerns. B’nai Mitzvah Bio Tommie Lucas is looking forward to Saturday, August 15, 2015 as he is called to Torah as Bar Mitzvah. He has been awaiting this special day for years. In addition to preparing, studying, and working with Andrea, Tommie has been playing baseball during the spring and summer. Tommie's parents, Fred and Mindy, are so proud of his positive attitude towards this challenge. Tommie feels so fortunate to be able to share this exciting occasion with all of Tommie's grandparents, Fran and Paul Bulmash and Pearl and Milt Lucas, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family and friends. Tommie anticipates sharing another wonderful milestone with the congregation after Isaac's Bar Mitzvah three years ago. He would like to extend his thanks to Rabbi Pivo, Hazzan Weisberg, Andrea, and all who helped him prepare for this day.

LIFE IN ISRAEL THE GOODMAN’S BLOG Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog.
Corey Austin Pacernick will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on August 29th, 2015. Corey is an eighth grader as Woodlawn Middle School, where he runs cross country, plays basketball, and competes in track and field. Corey’s favorite sport is soccer, which he has played regularly since the age of 4. For his mitzvah project, Corey is collecting lightly used soccer equipment for GOALS. GOALS relies on donated soccer equipment that goes directly to kids in Haiti who play soccer every day without basic equipment. Please look for the donation box in the shul lobby. Corey is sharing his special day surrounded by his loving family and friends. They include his proud parents, Anne and Lance, his supportive siblings, Sydney and Grant, maternal grandparents Jan and Bill Ernstein, and paternal grandparents, Marsha and Larry Pacernick. Corey is also excited to welcome aunts, uncles, cousins, and family friends from Texas, California, New York, Michigan, and Florida. The Pacernick family would like to thank Rabbi Pivo, Cantor Weisberg, Anna Besser and all of Corey’s Hebrew School teachers for providing guidance and an excellent Jewish education. Corey would like to extend a special thank you to his tutor, Andrea Dickson, who patiently helped him prepare his Haftarah and Torah readings.
Did You Know... In the June issue of The Word the Goodman’s talked about the Sar El program. Laura and Stan Zollar are currently participating in that program.
The Sar El program is, where volunteers are stationed on IDF (Israel Defense Force) or IAF (Israel Air Force) posts for two or three weeks where they do work in place of israel soldiers. .

B’nai Mitzvah Bio Haley Adrienne Bauman will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, August 22, 2015. Haley is an 8th grade student at Aptakisic Junior High in Buffalo Grove and a recent graduate of Congregation Beth Judea Hebrew School. Haley has been a figure skater for 10 years, and currently skates on the Starlights Juvenile Synchronized Skating Team. She also enjoys spending her summers with her friends up at Camp Chi, her “home away from home.” At Chi, she especially loves water skiing, horseback riding, the climbing wall and ropes course. At Aptakisic Junior High, Haley has been active in Student Council, Track and Field, Treasurer of the Aptakisic Business Club and a member of the National Junior Honor Society. She has spent many hours volunteering at Orphans of the Storm, Feed My Starving Children, Ronald McDonald House and Bernie’s Book Bank. Haley and her brother, Jacob, are currently coordinating a drive to collect pet supplies for abandoned animals at Orphans of the Storm. This shelter holds a special place in their hearts because that is where they adopted their puppy, Riley. Haley is looking forward to sharing her special day with family and friends from all phases of her life. She is especially grateful to be sharing her simcha with her twin brother, Jacob. She also appreciates the love and support of her grandparents, Marilyn and Don Sneider and Adrienne (of blessed memory) and Paul Bauman, as well as her aunts, uncles and cousins. Her parents, Kim and Andrew, couldn’t be more proud of all her accomplishments as she prepared for this meaningful day. Haley would like to thank Rabbi Pivo, Cantor Weisberg, Anna Besser, and all her teachers at Beth Judea who helped guide her Hebrew Education these past 7 years. Jacob William Bauman will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, August 22, 2015. At Aptakisic Junior High, Jacob has been involved in Student Council, Mosaic Variety Show, the Volleyball Team, Vice President of the Aptakisic Business Club and a member of the National Junior Honor Society. As a percussionist, he has enjoyed playing on the Jazz Band, 7th Grade Band and the 7th Grade Full Orchestra. Religious Education Baruchim habaim-welcome! As the summer draws to a close, I hope it has been restful and enjoyable. The school year will soon be upon us, and I would like to welcome you and your family back to our school and welcome our new students and their families to our Religious School community. CBJ’s Religious School education is based on two core principles. First, Jewish learning is not only about the child, but rather is a whole-family experience. We offer meaningful ways for every member of the family to connect with Judaism in every stage of life. Second, learning is not only about what happens in school, but throughout our daily lives. Therefore, what we do in the classroom will relate to what happens in your home, synagogue, and all the places we go. We are committed to Jewish learning that is relevant, inspirational, and transformative. We provide our students and their families with the tools to participate meaningfully in the Jewish community, with pride in their Jewish heritage and with the awareness that their actions will shape the future of the Jewish people. Religious Education Shabbat Service Attendance: Shabbat is an important part of our school curriculum. We teach our students about the joys and beauty of Shabbat. We train them to become proficient members of our community. In an effort to coordinate what our students are learning in the classroom and what they practice in their daily lives, CBJ has integrated Shabbat service attendance into our curriculum. Shabbat attendance is a requirement for all CBJ students in Aleph – Heh. During the school year, Aleph through Heh students are expected to attend 9 Shabbat services
(July 31, 2015 – May 31, 2016) Please mark your attendance in the Shabbat Book located in the main Sanctuary
Services that will count toward Shabbat service requirements are:
Friday night – services begin at 7:30 pm
Shabbat morning – services begin at 9:30 am. - Aleph & Bet families may attend the Gan Shabbat service which begins at 10:30 am in the Beit Midrash.
High Holiday Services - Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre, and Yom Kippur day services.
Any service in which there is a Torah and Haftarah reading such as - Rosh Hodesh - Simhat Torah (morning service) - Sukkot - Passover - Sh’mini Atzeret - Shavuot We want the students to come with parents in order to fully enjoy and participate in the service. Students and families must stay for the DURATION of the SERVICE. This is NOT a drop-off Shabbat.

Sisterhood Be Sure to Attend Our Annual Sisterhood Membership Dinner August 31st Sisterhood owes a BIG thank you to the two wonderful ladies who just finished their twoyear term as co-presidents. Bobbi Goldenberg and Lauri Rosenbloom both shared in the responsibilities that help make our Sisterhood a fun and functional organization that contributes to the family we call Beth Judea. Bobbi has been a CBJ member for 10 years and served as co-president with Debbi Green and continued on when Lauri stepped in to fill an unplanned vacancy. The two worked closely sharing the responsibilities of coordinating Sisterhood meetings and activities and attending synagogue board meetings. Lauri has been a CBJ member for over 30 years, served on the synagogue board for more than seven years, and has served as Sisterhood president TWICE. She definitely goes above and beyond what’s expected, and that’s why she was honored with the Eishet Hayil Award as a Most Valued Volunteer in April. The award is presented annually to a member of each Sisterhood from the Central Great Lakes Region of the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. Congratulations, Lauri, on this well deserved recognition. Please take a moment to thank Bobbi and Lauri the next time you see them and ask how you can get involved in Beth Judea’s Sisterhood. Men’s Club The theme of this year’s Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs International Convention was “Engage.” Six members of Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club attended the convention. We had an opportunity to engage with the top thinkers and leaders of Conservative/Masorti Judaism to address issues facing our movement and Jewish men. We heard from: Hal Lewis, President and CEO of the Spertus Institute for Jewish Leaning and Leadership; Jon Medved, one of Israel’s leading high tech venture capitalists; Eric Fingerhut, a former United States Congressman and now President and CEO of Hillel International, Women’s League President Carol Simon and USCJ President Margo Gold. Many of us are aware of the results of the recent PEW study that demonstrated a decline in the percentage of Jews who identify themselves as being Conservative/Masorti. Rather than viewing this as the ultimate fate of our movement, we should view it from the larger perspective of the history of the Jewish people. Judaism is always changing. Our history is replete with changes that at times were revolutionary. Consider Rabbi Yohanan ben Zakai, who transformed us from a religion based on sacrifice to one based on prayer, study of Torah, and acts of loving-kindness following the destruction of the Second Temple. Judaism is changing and together we can help guide those changes. One of the speakers quoted Chancellor Eisen of the JTS that synagogue members desire two things: community and meaning. The FJMC has, and will, develop programs to provide both community and meaning to all of the members of our congregations. One of the ways to help improve the sense of community and add meaning is our own Interpretive Minyan. Only 3% of affiliated Conservative/Masorti synagogue members attend Shabbat morning services regularly (at least once a month). If an individual does not attend services, the likelihood that they will have a Shabbat experience will be even less. In order to encourage our members to have a more meaningful Shabbat experience, a vibrant engaging alternative service can and will attract them. The Interpretive Minyan is a shorter service lasting ninety minutes while maintaining ritual integrity. It is conducted in both Hebrew and English. The service is accessible and non-threatening regardless of the level of Hebrew fluency or of prayer familiarity. We spend time discussing the Torah portion of the week. The emphasis of the service is to provide a shared experience meaningful to each individual. Norm Kurtz ran a workshop during the convention, and Jerry Sakol
and I along with Gregg Pollack and Joel Kurtz modeled this service. We received extremely positive feedback and interest in bringing this alternative minyan to the rest of the country. There were many other innovative ideas presented at the convention including a Celebrating Shabbat program that will be discussed in a future column. The Annual Jack Rizman Memorial Golf Outing will be held on Sunday August 30 at the Buffalo Grove Golf Club. Jack Rizman was a founding member of CBJ and a dynamic member of the Men’s Club, ritual committee and Board of Directors. He loved music and sang in the synagogue choir. His strong work ethic, good nature, and terrific sense of humor were an inspiration to those who knew him. The Golf Outing supports the Dr. Jack Rizman Memorial Fund and the Men’s Club. You can support the program even if you do not play golf. Consider sponsoring a hole or just attending the dinner that Sunday evening at Lou Malnati’s. At the convention, we honored Sandy Victor, who received the Ma’asim Tovim Award, and Burt Fishman, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award. We are proud to report that Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club received a Torch Award for our club’s retreat held in February 2015. We also received yet another Quality Club Award for 2014-15. Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen.
For quite a few years now, Congregation Beth Judea has been generously collecting cell phones for SHALVA.
According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low selfesteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.
We thought you’d enjoy knowing a bit about how this process works. After we gather the phones you put into the collection box, we ship them to a recycling operation in Florida, Shelter Alliance . They pay us according to the “blue book”value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones we send them every year, they wipe clean all your personal data and either refurbish your phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $40005,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help our clients. Recently Shelter Alliance has expanded their recycling program and now accepts Ipods, Ipads, and Readers. So, the next time you pass by the synagogue office and see the SHALVA collection box, think about all those old cellphones, ipads and ipods taking up space in your drawer or closet, and help us turn them into dollars for clients.
