President’s Message I was eating dinner with a friend last week and she asked me how being president of the synagogue was going. She thought I had just started my term. When I told her that my term would end in a few short weeks, she said that it had gone so fast. In reflecting on that statement, I would have to agree and disagree at the same time.
Thank you to Anna Besser for her work as our Education Director for the past 15 years. She enriched our students’ knowledge during her time at CBJ. I wish her good luck in her new role.
In some ways, I can’t believe this is the last Word article I am writing. When I became President, it seemed like a daunting task. Then to mix it up a bit, the pandemic hit!! CBJ’s response to the pandemic was unbelievable!! We always kept in mind that the most important goal was the safety and wellbeing of our congregants. When I look back at how we turned the synagogue and school virtual over night with Zoom services, Zoom meetings, and Zoom classes, events in the parking lot, and support for our entire membership, I cannot fathom how we achieved everything we did. Now, moving back into the synagogue in a cautious and controlled manner will continue to achieve our mantra of safety first!! I want to thank Rabbi Zimbalist for his leadership and guidance, not only during my term, but for the past three years at CBJ. It has been my privilege and honor to work with him. Words can’t express my gratitude for everything Rabbi Zimbalist does for CBJ!!! I am thrilled to welcome Cantor Bat-Sarah into our community. She will be an excellent Cantor/Educator. I am so excited to listen to her beautiful voice chant at services and see her work with our students (young and older) in the coming months and years. I am very appreciative of everything that Lisa Neiman does day in and day out to keep the synagogue running. Her historical knowledge of CBJ and her desire to put others ahead of herself make her the outstanding Executive Director that she is today.
The Word – June/July 2021
I want to recognize our Youth Director, Marc Sender. Marc continues to engage with our youth and keep connected to them, especially during the pandemic. The importance of this role cannot be minimized.
DANA GOLDSTEIN CBJ PRESIDENT
I am very grateful for a dedicated Executive Committee and Board of Directors. While we may not have always agreed, we came together- always putting the good and welfare of the synagogue above our personal desires. I want to specifically thank Herb Finn for his support throughout my entire term. There is a reason that I asked Herb to be my executive vice president. He is going to be a fabulous president, and I know CBJ is headed in the right direction. I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge my incredible family for their unwavering support during my presidency. To my husband Ken, my daughters Allison and Sari, and my future son-in-law Bryan, I am overwhelmed by your patience, your love, and your care throughout my term. You were there with me every step of the way and I couldn’t have done it without you. Being president wasn’t easy at times, but it was a job that I didn’t take lightly. It came with more than its share of laughter, tears, and sleepless nights!! However, I truly feel it was one of the most important things I have done. I am humbled that I had the opportunity to lead the synagogue and I pray that it will continue to grow and prosper. L’shalom, Dana Goldstein President

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Lillian “Lily” Rose Ban will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday June 5, 2021. Lily is a 7th grader at Aptakisic Jr. High School in Buffalo Grove. She loves acting in plays and is part of the BG Park District Advanced Theater Company. During the pandemic, she has spent a lot of time baking elaborate and delicious cakes. She also enjoys singing, board games, and doing crafts. Lily is a supportive, caring friend. For Lily’s Mitzvah Project, she coordinated donations to Project Linus and has been volunteering as a blanket maker for a couple years. Project Linus gives blankets to children in hospitals to provide them comfort, a cause which is important to Lily. Lily will be sharing this special day with her parents, Jenny and Noah; her brother, Elijah; and her grandparents, Bobbie and Steve Leon and Lynne and Dave Tobler; as well as aunts and uncles, family, and friends via Zoom. She will also be honoring the memory of her grandfather, Chuck Ban. Lily thanks tutor Kim Abern and Rabbi Zimbalist for helping her to prepare for this milestone. She also thanks Anna Besser and the CBJ teachers who have provided her with an amazing Jewish education.
Zachary Ryan Schwartz will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday afternoon, June 12, 2021. Zachary is a 7th grader at Hawthorn Middle School South in Vernon Hills. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends. Zachary participates in both the park district basketball and baseball programs. For his mitzvah project, Zachary has chosen to collect money to purchase a frisbee golf course for Elaine Frank Apachi Day. Elaine Frank Apachi Day Camp holds a special place in the hearts of our family, so Zachary wanted it to be a part of his special day. Zachary will be sharing his Bar Mitzvah with his family from near and far. We are blessed to be joined with guests from right around the corner to as far away as Coral Springs, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada. Near or far, we appreciate everyone’s good wishes and support. The Schwartz family would like to thank all those who have helped Zachary on his journey to become a Bar Mitzvah. This day would not be possible without the wonderful teaching from all of the Hebrew School teachers at Beth Judea. A special thank you to Anna Besser, Rabbi Zimbalist, and Shira Sender for preparing him for his special day.
A Hearty Mazel Tov to all our June/July B’nei Mitzvah Families

Shiva Baskets
WAYS & MEANS
Sunshine Fund
CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity
The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Religious Education
jlr oxcd Time to Say Goodbye Anna Besser Education Director
The amazing thing about Jewish tradition is that there is a prayer for everything. There is a prayer for new beginnings, for seeing lightning, for seeing the rainbow after the storm, for smelling a flower, and even for using the bathroom. There’s even a prayer of endings.
When we complete a study of a sacred text, we recite, “hadran alach” — “we will return to you.” This reminds us that our study is a lifelong journey, and our experiences with the lessons should be taken in the same way. So I’d like to share with you some lessons I’ve learned from our years of study together. •
School Parents: I’ve talked with you in my office, on the phone, at Starbucks, via text and email. We talked about family, hopes and dreams for your children, and how we can make CBJ your home. You’ve shared your concerns and together we planned for your child’s education. You’ve taught me about compassion and perspective. You’ve taught me the power in engaging families alongside kids.
•
Teachers: Through the years I’ve been in various classrooms, programs, and presentations. You’ve taught me thoughtful questions and critical thinking. You open possibilities in the conversations we have. You don’t shy away from learning new things and implementing them in the classroom. Your willingness to explore is captivating. You taught me the importance of innovation in education and the need to ask big and hard questions of myself and others.
•
Madrichim: You are the role models for our students. Your willingness to engage with and support student learning has taught me the importance of Post B’nai Mitzvah involvement. You intentionally get up on Sunday mornings to inspire our younger students. You’ve also taught me that if you give authenticity, you get authenticity. Being genuine opens the door to building meaningful connections.
•
Students: Your smiles always warmed my heart and made me feel excited to start the day at CBJ. I loved the stories you shared and the excitement you had to learn from one another. Your laughter and enthusiasm are contagious. You’ve taught me patience, resilience, and relevance. You’ve also taught me to listen twice as much as I speak. Listening provided me with ideas of what to implement in the school.
•
Education Committee Members: You’ve guided the vision for CBJ education, focusing on meeting our families where they are and finding ways to connect. You taught me the power in relationship building and importance of active listening.
Religious Education •
To The Greater CBJ Community: You’ve taught me that the moments spent together as we engage in prayer are just as sacred as the moments we spend together after services during oneg and kiddush. Those interactions taught me to remain as present as possible in the moment. Take in what is being said and done.
•
This last year has taught me that the smallest things can make the biggest difference, to appreciate the simple moments and gestures that were taken for granted. The hugs, the sharing of a meal, the giving of a blessing and placing my hands on my children’s heads, the precious family game nights time we unexpectedly got, the moments of good, the small and large kindnesses we have witnessed. I have a newfound gratitude for it all. And finally: I’ve learned that every moment spent together is precious because we don’t know when the next will come! As the saying goes, “Live today because tomorrow is never promised.”
I want to thank the professional staff, especially Lisa and Marc. You have been a steady source of support over the years. We found a groove and worked well together. Marc – we’ve planned some great programs over the years. Kadima and Kadinkers have continued to grow, and USY is thriving. Love that the End of Year Bash that has become an annual collaboration and that so many USY board members are also the madrichim the school. Lisa – Since my first day, we’ve been helping one another with program planning, tech issues, synagogue events, and holiday celebrations. We have each other’s backs. Every day, we check in and spend a few minutes catching up. It’s funny what we consider as “exercise” of going downstairs to raid the candy stash. Every round trip earned you at last 2 snack size chocolate bars. We have been through it all together – through the highs and lows, through several clergy searches, through school changes and more. I’ll never forget our annual Kol Nidre dinner as we finish setting up at Buffalo Grove High School, our coordinated Purim costumes, and our summer carpools of shlepping kids to Apachi. Our cars smelled like sunscreen for days on end. You’ve taught me the importance of working as a team. We help one another and make sure the job gets done. We go above and beyond to lift each other up. To the clergy – Rabbi Lifshitz, Rabbi Gamer, Rabbi Pivo, Rabbi Zimbalist, and Hazzan Weisberg. You have taught me much during the years. You’ve taught me about inclusion – each person matters not for what they are but for who they are. You’ve taught me that looking at the big picture helps focus the next steps. You’ve taught me to trust in myself and execute the plan. You’ve been my sounding board for programs, curriculum, school vision, and more. You listened, asked insightful questions and pushed me to reflect and fine tune.
Religious Education And lastly, I have to thank my family – Michael, Robbie, Miriam, and Sarah. You taught the meaning of unconditional love and support. You’ve given me strength and perseverance. Through it all, you have been there. You’re a priceless gift, greater than anything I can imagine. United we are able to get through anything. You’ve always been by my side, and I’m thankful for your presence each and every day. I would like to recite a special prayer ….. Birkat Hayom ברכת היום May we find joy with our families in our home. (Simcha) May we show love to those in our lives. (Ahavah) May we express kindness to others and to ourselves. (Hesed) May we seek justice for those who need our help. (Tzedek) May we care for those who are sick. (Refuah Shlayma) May we appreciate all the helpers in our world and strive to be helpers ourselves. (Tikkun Olam) May we thank the people who teach, feed, love, and keep us safe. (Hakarat Hatov) May we feel hope for better days ahead. (Tikvah בְּזֶה הַ מְּקום תְּ ִהי ברכה ושְּלום. May we create blessing and peace wherever we are. (Bracha v’Shalom) And let us say: Amen CBJ is an amazing community. Over these 15 years, you nurtured a wide eyed, naive and nervous Education Director and made me into who I am today – a confident, forward-thinking, risk-taking educator. Someone who understands the importance of community building, believes in empowering teachers, puts students in the center of their learning and created a collaborative inclusive learning environment. Thank you for incredible learning opportunities you presented. Lech L’shalom…may we move toward peace; may we walk toward strength. Shabbat Shalom

Sisterhood In a few short days, I will be passing the torch to our next Sisterhood co-president, Darlene Bikshorn. I thank her and all the other new board members who will be installed on June 6th. I would also like to thank the board members who will be continuing. Sisterhood is a labor of love, but certainly we can say that about CBJ as well. This has been a time of reflection for me as I look back over the last two years. I believe we can all say – what a 2 years it has been! Thank you to Sarah Goldenberg and Michele Sussman for your help and support as co-presidents. We made great teams and you both taught me much. If you had asked me 2+ years ago about being the Sisterhood co-president, I would have given you an interesting look. I never saw that for myself. I was happy to be a helper and didn’t see myself as a leader. I was given the opportunity to take a leadership position with much help and support of the rest of the Sisterhood board. The extra piece that was required by me was to step out of my comfort zone. It is not an easy thing to do and is usually followed by much trepidation. How do you know what you can do if you don’t step out of “the zone” once in a while? For the last 14 months and counting, we have been required to stay in our comfort zone. We have mastered Zoom, binged Netflix, baked bread, purged our homes, and probably organized things we never thought we would organize. It is time to get out and get out of “the zone.” I am not suggesting anyone do something that is not safe. What I am suggesting is to find some ways to get out and try something new. A day trip (or longer) to a place you have always wanted to see. Read a book by a new author or genre you have never read. A new pursuit or hobby you have always wanted to try but haven’t. Volunteer with a new organization or new committee. As we get back into the building and out into the world it will feel different, maybe even a little uncomfortable. Embrace the discomfort because that is the space in which we can grow. The 2021/22 schedule of Sisterhood events is still being decided. Once it is finalized, we will get it out to you via the Word, the weekly blast, and email. We want to make sure you have every opportunity to connect with your fellow Sisterhood members. If you have any ideas for programming, please reach out. We are always happy to work in an extra program. I look forward to seeing you all soon – in person!

Men’s Club Shalom from the Men’s Club. I can’t believe that another synagogue year is coming to an end. While we could not be together and experience all the fun that we would have if the shul were open, we still were able to have many of our programs, albeit virtually. Now that CBJ is opening up, I am looking forward to next year where we will be able to pray, laugh, and learn together. As I mentioned in last month’s article, our softball teams have started their season. As of this writing, our A team, coached by Michael Levy and Ken Goldstein, have a record of 1-1. Our B team, coached by Allen Harris and Brandt Rosen, is currently 0-2. While the season has started slowly for both teams, we do look good in our new hats and jerseys. As a reminder, all games will be on Sunday morning either at 9:30 AM or 10:40 AM. The games will be played on the fields at 1750 Techny Road in Northbrook. Please come out to root for both teams. If you have any questions regarding the teams, please reach out to either Allen Harris or Brandt Rosen. By the time you receive this, our FJMC virtual convention (June 6 – June 13) will be only a few short days away. Hopefully, you have signed up for what is going to be an incredible week filled with many wonderful speakers, programs, and honors. Registration is still open via the FJMC website (FJMC.org). The cost is $36 and, if you use the code midwest$18 (case sensitive), you will get a subsidy from the Midwest Region for $18. We are all looking forward to seeing Norm Kurtz receive the Presidential Award for his many years of service to the FJMC. This award has only been given eight times since its inception in 1965. Besides that, we will have the pleasure of hearing from a number of nationally and internationally known speakers including Rabbi Sharon Brous, the senior and founding Rabbi at IKAR in LA, Micah Goodman, acclaimed author, teacher, and political analyst in Israel, and Tal Brody, Israel’s “Mr. Basketball,” who helped the Israeli National Team win the European Basketball Championship. You do not need to be a Men’s Club member to sign up and enjoy all that is being offered.

Yasher kochachem to Al and Jim Gimpel for an absolutely outstanding Tap the Torah presentation on May 5. Your presentation “Max Gimpel: The Jewish Artist You Never Knew” was truly mind blowing. For those of you who did not have the chance to see it, it has been recorded and I highly recommend that you watch it. Contact Lisa Neiman if you would like to see it. While our Tap the Torah presentations are finished for this year, we will be having more starting in the fall. Please contact Orin Rotman if you have a topic that you would like to present. Our golf outing is in the planning stages and we are looking forward to it. It will be at Buffalo Grove Golf Course on August 29. Keep an eye on your email and weekly bulletins for more information. On Saturday, June 26, we will be presenting our 2021 Man of the Year and Youth of the Year awards to Steve Limer and Amelia Tehrani, respectively, as part of the annual awards Shabbat. This year, we will be having this at Apachi Day Camp. Please come and celebrate these two very worthy recipients. A special mazel tov goes out to Eric Yegelwel and Ron Friedman. Both have been elected to the Midwest Region Executive Board. Eric is now a vice president and Ron is now corresponding secretary. I know they will both do CBJ proud.
Finally, we want to send an incredibly special welcome to Cantor Bat-Sarah and her family. We look forward to praying and learning with her in the coming years as well as getting Lev involved with the Men’s Club. That’s it for now. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy. Have a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing you in person, in the fall. L’Shalom, Rob Lipka BJMC Co-President

INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council By Joanne Dicker, a Congregation Beth Judea Representative
Please join us and your neighbors for these upcoming programs: 1.
June, 2021: i-walk against hunger month! Our annual fundraiser to support our food pantries. As you know, this year has been especially hard for many of us. Please help the NWSIFC again this year with your generous donations to help feed our neighbors and friends. Unfortunately, we believe that our walk will once again be virtual. Therefore, we have extended it for the month of June. Use the attached “support sign” and we will post pictures of you walking (or not) for this worthy cause. I am attaching a support sign and copy of our flyer .
Ongoing: Food Pantry assistance. Please help your neighbors whose lives have been adversely affected by the pandemic economically. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council helps food pantries at Congregation Beth Am, Kingswood Methodist Church, St. Alphonsus, and St. Mary Parish. Your monetary donations are always welcome but especially needed at this time of year. I am also attaching a flyer of requested non-perishable foods and dry goods should you wish to purchase and drop off at the food pantries directly. If you need assistance, I am also attaching contact information for our food and local pantries. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council proudly serves this community. If you have any programming suggestions, please forward them to me or your IFC representatives. Joanne Dicker For more information on any of our programs, please contact us by e-mail or telephone: nwsinterfaith@gmail.com, 224-699-0386 or visit our website at: http://www.northwestsuburbaninterfaith.org Donations may be made directly to: Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council PO Box 5301, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089

Hesed Committee
An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call the Rabbi. FOR A LIST OF EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS, AGENCIES AND RESOURCES click here
We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.
Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff. 34

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
