TIKKUN L’EIL SHAVUOT

8 The Word – May 2021

SHAVUOT

SHAVUOT 2021

Please join your CBJ family for an amazing night of learning at our annual Tikkun L’Eil Shavuot – an evening of studying together! Our theme for Shavuot 2021 is “The Ethics of God.” Judaism is not a religion simply to be defined by the laws of the Torah, but rather it is best defined through our experiences of applying the commandments and the values within Torah to our daily lives. By doing so, we not only practice Judaism, but we experience it and make it accessible for all. And in today’s Jewish world, technology, innovation, and inclusion play critical roles in both building and sustaining our congregation and the greater Jewish community. Everyone is encouraged to attend the Tikkun; however, if you would like to teach, please contact Orin Rotman at orotman@steinrotman.com by Monday, May 7, 2021. Presentations should not exceed 7 minutes in length and creativity is encouraged. Rabbi Zimbalist is also available to help brainstorm ideas and develop your presentations.

HESED COMMITTEE Dear Congregants, We hope you and your families are doing well during the quarantine.

As the virus numbers in the state are beginning to rise again, it is important that we recognize that many of our congregants are feeling more isolated than ever. Perhaps you know of members who would benefit from ongoing contact from a caring congregant or perhaps you wish for this outreach. If so, please let us know, and we will have a volunteer contact you on a regular basis. We cannot do this, however, unless you let us know. Please let us help you if you- or someone you know- need it! We don’t want you to feel alone. We continue to reach out to congregants to mark happy milestones, such as birthdays and anniversaries. We want you to know you are being thought of during these happy occasions. If you would like to help make these calls, please contact Marilyn or Evan.

If you need assistance with technology to participate in the synagogue offerings or if you need a cloth mask, please let us know! Finally, we would like to welcome all the new members to our Beth Judea family. Thank you for recognizing CBJ as a warm and welcoming community. While we cannot congregate in person, there are many opportunities for you to become involved. If joining our committee is enticing, please call or mail us. Our email address is listed below. If you would be interested in helping us in the future or have suggestions on how to best meet the needs of congregants, please contact us at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. We wish each of you the best. Please stay safe and use all reasonable precautions to remain healthy. We are one family and need to take care of each other. Evan Rumack Marilyn Green-Rebnord

CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Sisterhood Are you feeling better with the longer days, warmer weather, and more sunshine? I know that I am. It always feels like a long time coming but so good when it gets here. We had a wonderful afternoon (virtually) touring Paris. Our second (and hopefully last) virtual Torah Fund event was a success! Thank you to Andrea Heiger and her committee for getting us to Paris without even having to pack. Our tour guide, Karen Reb Rudel, really did show us the sites. She leads in-person tours as well, so if you are planning a trip to Paris anytime soon please keep her in mind. https://sightseekersdelight.com/ April 25th was the CGLR Conference. It was, as expected, done virtually. I hope all who attended enjoyed the focus on self-care and self-renewal. Sari London and Sandy Levitt were honored as our Valued Volunteers for the time and work they have put in to keeping up our involvement in PADS over the last few years. Have you wanted to learn how to make challah but were a little too intimidated to give it a try?! It is not too late to join us on May 2nd for a virtual challah bake with Edna Shrank. She will show us the steps, provide her special recipe, and demonstrate braiding. This will not be an event where you bake alongside her. It is a chance to watch and ask questions so that you can it do it on your own. See the flyer for more details. On May 8th (our next regular Sisterhood meeting), we will be voting on our slate for the upcoming year. Installations will be on June 3rd. We are all hopeful that we will get back to events in the building and will have a full line up of events as we have had in the past. We will share the calendar as soon as it is available. If you have any ideas for events you would like to see or be a part of, please let us know. Enjoy the renewal of spring!

Men’s Club Greetings from the Men’s Club. As I am writing this, spring has arrived, the weather is starting to slowly get warmer, and the grass is getting greener. All good signs that we can get outside and enjoy it with family and friends. I want to once again thank everyone who volunteered to pack and deliver the Yom HaShoah candles and all who remembered to light them. This is one of those observances that I feel has touched everyone in our synagogue family and we must never forget. I also want to personally thank everyone who sent in a donation. Yasher koach. As I mentioned in my article last month, on March 21, we had our second virtual poker tournament. Thank you again to Steve Limer and Allen Harris for putting this together. We had 16 players, and I want to congratulate Noah Ban, Lance Pacernick, Ron Kovich, Allen Harris, and Robert Matuk on being the winners of the evening. We are looking forward to another tournament either in the summer or early fall. Our softball teams will begin playing on May 2. We have 2 teams this season with Michael Levy and Ken Goldstein managing CBJ A and Allen Harris and Brandt Rosen managing CBJ B. 8 teams in total will comprise the league. All games will be on Sunday morning either at 9:30 AM or 10:40 AM. The games will be played on the fields at 1750 Techny Road in Northbrook. Please come out to root for both teams and see the new jerseys and hats that they will be sporting as we will be looking to add another championship trophy to the ones we already have. If you have any questions regarding the teams, please reach out to either Allen Harris or Brandt Rosen.

Tzedakah Fund The Men's Club has made donations from the minyan tzedakah box: We thank all those who have contributed to the tzedakah fund administered by Men's Club.

The Word – May 2021

As I have mentioned in past articles, this July we were to be heading down to the Sheraton Grand Chicago for our bi-annual FJMC International Convention. Unfortunately, that had to be cancelled due to the virus. Instead, we will be having a virtual convention from June 6 – June 13. Registration is open via the FJMC website (FJMC.org). The cost is $36 and, if you use the code midwest$18 (case sensitive), you will get a subsidy from the Midwest Region for $18. While there will be many interesting events during the convention, one of the most important will be on the evening of June 6. Our own Norm Kurtz will be receiving the President’s Award for his many years of service to the FJMC. This award has only been given eight times since its inception in 1965. While you are registering, please also take a moment place an ad in the ad journal. Ads must be in no later than May 10. On May 5, we will be having another Tap the Torah. Al and Jim Gimpel will be presenting “Max Gimpel: The Jewish Artist You Never Knew.” Please keep an eye on your email for additional information. We are in the process of planning our annual golf outing. It will be in late August and we will keep you updated on the plans. Finally, congratulations and Mazel Tov to Steve Frost for winning another term on the Stevenson School Board. That’s it for now. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy. L’Shalom, Rob Lipka BJMC Co-President

INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council By Joanne Dicker, a Congregation Beth Judea Representative

Sometimes it is hard to believe that spring is here- it recently snowed for a brief period of time. Please join us and your neighbors for these upcoming programs: 1.

2. 3.

May: Save the monarch butterflies: Join the NWSIFC and Sierra Club Milkweed for Monarchs Survival Campaign. At our participating congregations we will be planting gardens or supplementing existing gardens with Milkweed and other nectar plants to support monarch butterflies. May 23rd at 5 pm: Virtual tour of Jerusalem: We will be touring the important holy sites to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. (See flyer) June, 2021: i-walk against hunger month! Our annual fundraiser to support our food pantries. As you know, this year has been especially hard for many of us. Please help the NWSIFC again this year with your generous donations to help feed our neighbors and friends. Unfortunately, we believe that our walk will once again be virtual. Therefore, we have extended it for the month of June. Use the attached “support sign” and we will post pictures of you walking (or not) for this worthy cause. I am attaching a support sign and copy of our flyer .

Ongoing: Food Pantry assistance. Please help your neighbors whose lives have been adversely affected by the pandemic economically. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council helps food pantries at Congregation Beth Am, Kingswood Methodist Church, St. Alphonsus, and St. Mary Parish. Your monetary donations are always welcome but especially needed at this time of year. I am also attaching a flyer of requested non-perishable foods and dry goods should you wish to purchase and drop off at the food pantries directly. If you need assistance, I am also attaching contact information for our food and local pantries. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council proudly serves this community. If you have any programming suggestions, please forward them to me or your IFC representatives. Joanne Dicker For more information on any of our programs, please contact us by e-mail or telephone: nwsinterfaith@gmail.com, 224-699-0386 or visit our website at: http://www.northwestsuburbaninterfaith.org Donations may be made directly to: Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council PO Box 5301, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089

Hesed Committee

An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call the Rabbi. FOR A LIST OF EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS, AGENCIES AND RESOURCES click here

We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.

Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff. 40
