Rabbi's Reflections Finding Meaning in Community In the ancient text Pikei Avot – which we will be studying all year on Thursday nights! –the sage Hillel is quoting as saying ‘Do not separate yourself from the community.’ There is no such thing as a Jewish hermit; we cannot feel fully ourselves as Jews unless we are engaged in the lives and concerns of those around us, including engagement with those who are not Jewish. This month we have multiple opportunities to feel a part of, and to contribute to, a variety of communities. The first in sequence is our annual Veterans’ Day Shabbat, November 6th. During services that Friday night, we will call to the bimah all those who have served in the armed forces and thank them for their service to our country. Is there any higher form of dedication to community and country than risking life and limb for their sake? Please come out to show your appreciation to our veterans. Next comes a major event for the Conservative movement: the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism convention in Schaumburg November 13-17. As I mentioned in this space last month, Hazzan, our President Arnie Goldberg and members of our leadership and membership at large will be attending convention, and I strongly urge you to do so as well. The convention theme is "Shape the Center," and it offers dozens of fantastic sessions that can help us understand where we are as Conservative Jews in the 21st century and where we are headed. Join the conversation, learn practical skills, and help to shape the community of Conservative Jews nation-wide.
Finally, the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Program takes place Sunday evening, November 22 at Stevenson High School. This is a new venue for the program, necessitated by the huge crowds we have drawn over the past several years. No one worship space can accommodate the thousand or so people we have been getting, so we are trying out the stunning theater space at Stevenson. As proud as we are to be active members of the Jewish community, we are equally proud to work hand in hand with members of area churches and other faith-based organizations to improve the lives of our neighbors in the Northwest suburbs through our contributions to area food banks, fundraising walks, and shared trips to rebuild communities damaged by hurricanes. Hazzan Weisberg and our children also take part by singing that night. Come and celebrate our commitment to different faiths working together for a better world. I look forward to seeing you at all of these programs as well as on Shabbat and in any of the wonderful classes that have already begun at Beth Judea. I call on all of our members to find connections to community by showing up any day of the week in minyan, by giving their time and effort to build up our shared home at CBJ, and by engaging in acts of gemilut hasadim, acts of loving kindness, by celebrating with each other and comforting each other as we move through this year as one loving and learning community.

Happenings with Hazzan Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council Celebrates Its 25th Year – November 22, 2015!! Three years after I arrived at Congregation Beth Judea, in response to an anti-Semitic act which took place in the local area in 1990, a group of Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish clergy responded by bringing together our congregations, as well as various community leaders, to promote our shared religious values of peace, tolerance, love, and respect. This group became known as the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council. Laypeople from each of our congregations (Beth Judea’s representative for many years was Helene Fox, who is still active!) quickly took on leadership roles, meeting on a monthly basis to steer the community toward worthy goals, like community outreach, finding ways to help those around us and elsewhere in need. As its main event each year, one of the larger congregations in the area would host a gathering in song and celebration on the Sunday evening before Thanksgiving, so that we could together express our gratitude to the Almighty for life, family, health, and the many other blessings which all of us too often take for granted. I still have my music from the first of these gatherings, which was held at St. Mary in Buffalo Grove in November of 1991. Alas, not even Beth Judea could accommodate the huge turnouts for these annual celebrations, especially due to our parking limitations. This year, for the first time, it was decided that, rather than place such a heavy burden on one hosting congregation, we would use a neutral venue. So, on Sunday evening, November 22, the Interfaith Council will hold its 25th annual Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration in the Performing Arts Center of Stevenson High School, off of Route 22 in Lincolnshire, beginning at 7:00 PM. The program always includes wonderful and diverse musical elements, such as a bell choir, and a Biblical or morally-themed puppet presentation put on by the Kingswood United Methodist Church’s Glory Fingers Creative Ministry Team. This is in addition to combined adult and children’s volunteer choirs, in which some of you who are interested may still be able to take part, if there is room! Combined rehearsals begin on Monday evening, November 2 - please contact me right away if you have not already done so, and I can send you all the details. There are inspirational readings, plus brief thoughts from some of our clergy, in addition to the Council President’s address. As of 2015, the president of the Interfaith Council is Beth Judea’s own Joanne Dicker, a great source of pride to all of us! I urge you to attend this unique, enjoyable, and meaningful Thanksgiving celebration, and if you have family, bring them! The program lasts from 60-75 minutes, followed by donated refreshments and some time to interact with friends and neighbors. Please bring non-perishable (and pre-expiration date!) food items or paper goods which will be collected and donated to our local food pantries. And consider getting more involved personally in the Interfaith Council’s work on behalf of Beth Judea and our entire community. You cannot ask for a greater mitzvah opportunity! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, see you in shul – Hazzan Roger Weisberg

President’s Message I would like to summarize an article posted on ejewishphilanthropy.com written by Rabbi Scott Hausman-Weiss on July 19, 2015, as I believe it is relevant to our congregation. The article is titled “Anchors away: In response to Alternative Dues Models and the larger Paradigm Shift.”
ARNIE GOLDBERG CBJ PRESIDENT
As I noted in my Yom Kippur appeal, the synagogue has always been the core of Jewish communal life. The synagogue matters! These are the places that our grandparents’ hard work brought to fruition, where our parents’ and children’s pictures adorn the walls, where our deceased relatives names are remember on plaques in the sanctuary, where our memories are held in scared trust.
It is amazing the manner in which our Americanized synagogues grew from 50 to 200 to 500 family units, and many even larger, in the period from early fifties until the late nineties. This was made possible by cultural winds and external circumstances that encouraged membership and the growth of the synagogue. However, as we are all very aware, the Jewish world has changed and the synagogue cannot continue to sustain itself without change. The growth that defined the synagogue has significantly slowed and, in many cases, reversed itself. While we search for answers as to why this growth has shifted, we cannot blame ourselves, for there are many factors we never controlled. The growth was in large part fostered by the baby boom, equal opportunity, and the American cultural desire to belong to a larger group. Today, however, the cultural winds have drastically changed. Beth Judea is clearly an example of this paradigm shift. From our inception in 1968, we grew to a Congregation of approximately 735 families as the suburbs of Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights, and Long Grove saw their Jewish population increase until the mid1990’s. Since then, the trend has reversed itself, and this year our membership has decreased to approximately 540 family units, with the most alarming statistic that roughly 60% of our congregation is over age 60. The culture of our Jewish community has drastically changed. American Jews see themselves to be Americans first and foremost and their desires, tastes, and expectations are significantly different than past generations. This new generation embraces individual innovation, creativity, and freedom. This is the cultural environment which we must learn to embrace. Clearly, to appeal to this new generation known as the “Millennials," we must change the focus of our congregation and its ideals and financial structure. We must recognize that the internet and social media are their spheres of influence.
Our mission is simple: to provide opportunities to show meaning, purpose, and the importance of connection to their Jewish heritage. We must focus on the “Why” they should belong. Along with other members of the Executive Committee, we have already begun this process of change. First, we have organized a focus on young family committee under the direction of Michael Gluck, our membership VP. Secondly, we are examining other dues models that may make membership in our congregation less of a financial burden and make membership more accessible for all dues categories while still enabling us to meet our financial burden. Finally, our endowment campaign to secure our future is well under way and has been very successful. I clearly believe that as long as “tradition” (be it ritual, communal, or history) is the only factor considered in Congregational decision making, we will be stuck in the survival doldrums. We must trust that positive change is required to build Judaism around the next generation. Arnie Goldberg President Congregation Beth Judea

Religious Education TALKING TO OUR CHILDREN ABOUT ISRAEL (adapted from JECC’s Israel: Six Lenses Response Curriculum) During the past few weeks, the stabbings and terror attacks on Israeli citizens has increased alarmingly. In times of crisis, it is essential for our families to join with the larger Jewish community in supporting Israel and its citizens. Discussions about the state of Israel, specifically the Israeli - Palestinian conflict, can be contentious and heated. Israel brings up many emotions and connects to profound issues, such as anti-Semitism. At the same time, Israel symbolizes much of what makes us proud as Jews and has the potential to intensely connect us to our history and our historic potential. Israel is a special place for Jews worldwide. Israel is a special place for Jews. It is our national birthplace, a place where Jews from across the world have gathered to live, a place where Hebrew is a living language, a place where the celebrations, memorials, songs, and television shows are Jewish, a place where the Jewish calendar marks the weeks and months. “All of Israel is responsible one for another.” In Pirkei Avot, we are instructed to seek positive friendships (Pirkei Avot 1:6) because friendships help build our intellect and our identities. True friends are there for us in times of joy and trouble. It is a reciprocal relationship. The friendship between Jews living in Israel and Jews living in the Diaspora is a pillar of Jewish life in the modern era. It goes beyond moral and financial support. It goes beyond the fact that the United States calls Israel a valued friend and ally. We are connected to the people of Israel and they are connected to us through our joint history, culture, and connection to the land. Be a "critical consumer" of media; carefully evaluate the slant of the news about Israel. News about the attacks in Israel reaches us in a variety of forms: word of mouth, newspaper, radio, television, and internet- each having a variety of sources with its own agenda and bias. We need to help our children become critical consumers of information. They require guidance in separating facts from opinions. It is dangerous to assume that because our children are being raised in the Information Age, that they know how to sift through the information and be able to separate facts from opinions. Becoming a critical consumer is an important element in nurturing their connection to Israel, understanding the challenges Israel faces, and developing their advocacy skills.
Israel anchors the Jewish people as a spiritual, national, and cultural center. Israel is our spiritual and religious center. In our prayers, we ask that Israel be blessed with peace. At our weddings, we break a glass to remember the destruction of the Holy Temple and our land. At every seder, we proclaim, “Next year in Jerusalem!” Israel is our political and national center. Israel is the only state where Jewish political parties vie with one another to hold the reins of power. It is the only state whose national anthem speaks of the Jews' ages-old hope of living in freedom in our land. It is the only state with national Jewish holidays, the only one ready to send its soldiers across Africa to rescue Jews in peril.

Religious Education TALKING TO OUR CHILDREN ABOUT ISRAEL
(continued)
Israel is important to Jews because it is intimately connected to the origins of our people and our religion. The very idea of Israel has always been connected with the Jewish belief that the world can be changed and that life can be better. Modern Israel adds another element to this concept by saying that Jewish life can be ameliorated - through our actions, hopes, and deeds we can reshape our destiny. Solidarity With Israel The Hebrew word for solidarity is ahdut - its root letters are related to the Hebrew number ehad (one). The notion that we are “one” is an important idea in Jewish tradition. Despite our differences, we are one people with a common collective responsibility. In good times and bad times, we stand shoulderto-shoulder with one another in thoughts and in deeds.

SISTERHOOD Didn’t we just finish saying it felt like the holidays came early? Well, Hanukkah is just around the corner – right where it’s supposed to be. Hanukkah is the eight-day celebration beginning on the 25th of Kislev that marks the victory of the Jewish people over the forces of Hellenism and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in 165 B.C.E. Each night of the festival is marked by the addition of a candle to the eight branched hanukkiah (Menorah). This practice reminds us of the single cruse of pure olive oil found in the Temple by the Maccabees who led the battle against the Greeks. Miraculously, the small amount of oil burned for eight days. That’s why we celebrate for eight days. Hanukkah is a reminder of the importance of asserting our Jewishness against the forces of assimilation. Children enjoy the holiday by means of the candle lighting, giving and receiving gifts, and spinning the dreidel (top). Potato latkes (pancakes) are traditional because they are cooked in oil. Jelly donuts (sufganiyot) are popular in Israel for the same reason. May the light of the Hanukkah candles brighten your lives with lots of love and laughter as you celebrate with family and friends.
We’d like to share the following recipe From the Sisterhood Cookbook “L’Chaim Too!” POTATO LATKES
1 Bag of Potatoes 6 Eggs, beaten Salt, pepper, onion powder
Lots of oil Grate potatoes by hand or in a food processor. Add eggs and all the seasoning. Preheat pan with oil to cover bottom. Cook until crispy on each side. Place on paper towel to drain. Enjoy!
Let us know if you have a family recipe you’d like to share.
Happy Hanukkah to everyone from the Sisters of Sisterhood!
* Be sure to do all your Holiday shopping at the Sisterhood Hanukkah Bazaar * Sunday Nov 15, 9a-3p in the Lieberman Social Hall

SISTERHOOD Would your college student appreciate a message from their Beth Judea family? Each year, the CBJ office requests the name and address of our undergraduate college students. In the past, 30-35 parents responded with the necessary information. Sisterhood, headed by College Care Card chairperson Linda Lippman, compiles the list of names, and right after the Thanksgiving Break, the mailing goes to each listed student, containing a gift card, warm wishes from Sisterhood, and a humorous and personal letter from Rabbi Pivo. The CBJ undergrad students look forward each year to this special mailing and the connection from home that Sisterhood brings them. If your student (undergraduates only, please) would like to receive this anticipated and always appreciated mailing, please email his/her name and complete college address to Lisa Neiman (lneiman@bethjudea.org). Sisterhood thanks you in advance for your support of our very worthwhile project focusing on our Beth Judea college students.

Men’s Club We begin this month already preparing for Hanukkah. During Hanukkah we light candles to remind us of the Maccabees’ fight for religious freedom. Soon you should be receiving Hanukkah candles from Men’s Club. Men’s Club distributes these candles to the members of Congregation Beth Judea every year. Men’s Club members will be packing and will begin distributing the candles on Sunday, November 8. Please join us to help pack. You can also help by volunteering to take a route to distribute the candles to your fellow congregants’ homes. Each route takes approximately one hour to complete. The contributions we receive for the candles help us to support youth activities including purchasing Siddurim for the Aleph class and providing support to synagogue youth groups. Please send your donation to Men’s Club so that we can continue to support these activities and spark light in Jewish life for our young people. The Federation of Jewish Men’s Club’s Sefer Haftarah will be visiting Congregation Beth Judea on Shabbat, November 21. The FJMC Sefer Haftarah has travelled around the countryand has been used in synagogues from the West coast to the East coast and from Florida to California. Men’s Club will be leading a lay led Men’s Club Shabbat in celebration of the Sefer Haftarah’s visit to our synagogue. The FJMC Sefer Haftarah was part of the inspiration for Congregation Beth Judea to purchase our own scroll. The FJMC Sefer Haftarah Shabbat will be a meaningful, joyous celebration filled with ruach and spirituality as we anticipate the addition of a haftarah scroll for Congregation Beth Judea and it’s inspiration - the Federation of Jewish Men’s Club Sefer Haftarah scroll.
friends. Although it is a secular holiday, it is a day for giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and preceding year. What better way to give thanks than by giving some of your time to help others? Men’s Club participates in volunteering at the Lieberman Center in Skokie on a regular basis every fourth Shabbat. We assist the residents to and from services and as needed during the Shabbat service. We will be volunteering on November 28, the Shabbat following Thanksgiving. Many of our “regulars” will be out of town so we can really use some extra help. Please contact either Ron Friedman or Jerry Sakol if you can give thanks and participate in this worthy endeavor. The next Tap the Torah discussion led by Orin Rotman is scheduled for Wednesday, November 11 at 8 PM at the Continental Restaurant in Buffalo Grove. Join us for a lively Torah discussion on a timely and entertaining topic over a beer or any beverage of your choice. The title of the discussion will be “Sticks and Stones.” Finally, I would like to thanks those who helped take down the Sukkah last month. They are: Richard Russell, Manny Velazquez, Maynard Hirsch, Sandy Victor, Ron Friedman, and Jerry Sakol. Without our Men’s Club volunteers, we would have to observe Sukkot without a Sukkah! Yasher Koach to you all. Eric Yegelwel

We took an entire sold out bus up to the orchard and had a blast going through corn mazes and riding down a crazy slide. Did You Know... Do you know of information that would be of interest to our congregants? If so, please let us know.
We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.

SHALVA “Its okay, the children aren’t effected” But what if you knew they were?
Did you Know……… SHALVA Collects Cellphones?
Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen.
For quite a few years now, Congregation Beth Judea has been generously collecting cell phones for SHALVA.
According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low selfesteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.
We thought you’d enjoy knowing a bit about how this process works. After we gather the phones you put into the collection box, we ship them to a recycling operation in Florida, Shelter Alliance . They pay us according to the “blue book”value of each phone. In processing the thousands of phones we send them every year, they wipe clean all your personal data and either refurbish your phones, recycle the parts or melt them down. Each year SHALVA receives around $40005,000 just by collecting your old or broken cellphones. All of these dollars go directly to help our clients. Recently Shelter Alliance has expanded their recycling program and now accepts Ipods, Ipads, and Readers. So, the next time you pass by the synagogue office and see the SHALVA collection box, think about all those old cellphones, ipads and ipods taking up space in your drawer or closet, and help us turn them into dollars for clients.
Upon three things the world is based: Upon Torah, Upon Divine Service, and Upon the Practice of Charity.
Cell Phone Drop-Off Box In Synagogue Office! Help domestic abuse victims by donating your old cell phones. Each phone raises money for domestic abuse crisis-counseling services in the Jewish community! There is a collection box in the synagogue office. The Word - November 2015

This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
