President’s Message Thank you to the many congregants who attended our Friday night service remembering our friend Ben Saypol, of blessed memory. Memories and tributes were shared by Rabbi Klatzker, Mitch Lerman, Rabbi Lifshitz, and Hazzan Weisberg. Ben's mother, Judye Groner, sent a message to all of us shared by Hazzan as well. Ways & Means It seems obvious why fundraising is important: to raise funds for needed items, services, and programs. Yet, raising funds has so many other benefits besides the obvious. MITCH HECHT WAYS & MEANS VP
Often, budgets get cut or less than ideal family situations mean that children must go without things or activities that their classmates receive, and later life opportunities may be diminished because of it. There are, unfortunately, needs of great variety all around us, and fundraising will most likely be an aspect of our lives for generations to come. But raising funds for a cause has a lot more benefits than taking care of an obvious monetary need. Fundraising is important for a variety of other reasons as well. For example, it allows the children or other recipients of the funds (or what they purchase) to feel some pride of ownership. In many cases, the beneficiaries of funds that are raised are able to feel not as if they have received ‘charity,’ but as if they have actually earned the item or experience that the funds have provided. What better way to help a person to feel empowered than to allow them to help raise the funds needed for a cause that will benefit them? With this said, many families shop online, and Congregation Beth Judea has been approved for ‘Amazon Smile’. A formal notification along with instructions on how to use this web site with the URL address will be sent to all congregants. This is a great way to do your holiday shopping in addition to the Chanukah Bazaar here at the synagogue.

SUPPORT BETH JUDEA BY PURCHASING GIFT CARDS
The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws. Historically, the Board of Directors of Congregation Beth Judea has sent shiva baskets to the immediate family of Board members; parents, spouses, siblings and G-d forbid, children. We would like to extend this gesture to the entire congregation.
Purchasing gift cards is one of the easiest ways to support Beth Judea. The Congregation earns a rebate from the vendors when you utilize the gift cards, so there is no cost to you. Gift cards can be utilized the same as cash, there are no restrictions. If you are shopping for groceries or clothes, going to a movie or traveling, you can help support our Congregation. Order forms for Gift Cards are available in the office or in the Lobby on Sunday morning. They can be purchased with cash, check, or credit cards (a 2.5% convenience fee will be added when paying with a credit card). Click Here to Download Form

Religious Education Word of the Day: Ushpizin
Anna Besser Education Director
Guess who's coming to dinner? Crowded sukkahs in Jerusalem's Ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim neighborhood.
Tradition teaches that seven guests are “invited” into the sukkah—one for each night of the holiday— and include our biblical patriarchs and matriarchs Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, David, Sarah, Miriam, Deborah, Hannah, Esther, Rebecca, Leah, Rachel and Ruth. Ushpizin, is an Aramaic word meaning “guests.” “Enter, exalted holy ushpizin,” begins the text that we recite to welcome the visitors. Modern practices include inviting significant Jewish figures from recent history, as well as family and community members who are no longer with us. This is an opportunity to learn from those who came before us and to be inspired to live our lives accordingly. The custom of ushpizin also teaches that we should “invite” those less fortunate to share in a festive meal. Maimonides taught, “While eating and drinking himself, one is obligated to feed the stranger, orphan, and widow, along with the other unfortunate poor…” (Laws of Yom Tov 6:18). The season of Sukkot reminds us of our obligation to help feed the hungry and to reach out to those in need. So how can you “welcome guests” into your sukkah this Sukkot? • Share stories with your children about people who you admired or were important to you. • Donate your time and/or resources to a local shelter or food bank. • Invite another CBJ family over for a meal, and get to know each other better!

Youth WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH??? Get involved early!! Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur have passed. That also means that you have filled out your annual Kol Nidre pledge card. No, not the money one (though of course that one is important to us). I am talking about the spiritual pledge card. The one where you bend off a corner to say how you are going to get more involved at CBJ. We all start each year with those great intentions. So what was it that you folded down this year? Work in the kitchen? Join Men’s Club? Join Sisterhood? Or my personal favorite, get involved in the youth programs? Regardless of what you folded, the point is to find a way to get involved early and often! At the incredible kickoff event, we had the start of the school year with our Wheel of Wisdom program; Marah Altenberg spoke as a parent about the importance of getting your kids involved in the CBJ youth programs early. This is advice that is key to the early connection of our youth to Judaism and the synagogue. We offer a number of ways for youth to get involved, but they may need an extra push from you to do so! We offer a Shabbat community that has Gan Shabbat and tot services for 2nd grade and under, Junior Congregation for 3rd-7th grade, Pray and Play creative services for 8th-12th grade, and both a regular service and interpretive minyan for those over high school aged. There really is something for everybody. Additionally, we offer a wonderful Focus on Families program with monthly programs for families with children in 2nd grade and under, a Kadinkers program for kids to attend independent of their parents from grades 3-5, a Kadima program with a couple of programs a month including trips to comedy clubs, corn mazes, and more for our 6th-8th grade middle schoolers, and the reigning CHUSY region chapter of the year and 2017 International Chapter of the year nominee high school USY program, BJUSY, for our 9th-12th graders, that offers weekly programs on a variety of different days of the week! The point of telling you about all of this is to show that you have a plethora of options of ways to get your kids involved at CBJ. We offer all kinds of different programs on all kinds of days, but each program requires you to encourage and push your kids to get involved. Once they are involved their connection to Judaism will only continue to grow and flourish. In addition to all the options mentioned, we are also always looking for suggestions of new ways to make the youth programs better for you and your kids! If you have any ideas or suggestions please feel free to email, call, pop by the office, or even send a message in a bottle- just get the message to me so we can make it happen! Remember you can always stay up to date with all things BJUSY throughout the entire year by visiting our new and improved website www.bethjudeausy.weebly.com as well as our calendar http://tinyurl.com/BJUSYcalendar. Men’s Club Ladies and Gentlemen of Beth Judea, As president of the Men’s Club, I feel it is my duty to send our prayers and true loving wishes to the victims of those devastating hurricanes that have wreaked havoc far across the Southern US and numerous islands to the south and east of us. Collectively, we pray they find the strength and resources to rebuild their lives. This Sunday Oct. 1st, is our monthly meeting. We had to find a date without a holiday or conflicting event. Last month on the 13th, The Men’s Club had a great time honoring the arrival of Rabbi Klatzker. About 15 of us met at Mizrahi Grill and had a wonderful dinner, shared a bottle of scotch, and welcomed the Rabbi in true Beth Judea spirit. I’d like to take this time to recognize our winning Beth Judea Men’s Club Softball team. In case you haven’t heard, our team is this year’s champion! Yasher Koach to all our dedicated players. Oct. 18th at 7:00 PM Is when this series of Melton Jewish Education for adults begins. As in past years, we are honored to have sponsored this extremely vital and compelling activity that raises our level of academic awareness, deepens our spirituality, and revitalizes our appreciation of our heritage. Everyone should seriously consider attending at least one of the programs. Please remember that you can start the Core courses with either the first or second year. Your Men’s Club has been very busy using our Sundays to totally rebuild our Beth Judea Sukkah. Under the careful eye of Sandy Victor, we rebuilt all the walls and doors to prepare for the holiday that begins this Wed. on the 4th. We will be having our annual Steak and Scotch in the Sukkah event on Sunday the 8th @ 5:00 PM. Please check out the flyer and get your reservation in. Women of course are welcome, too.
The Word - October 2017
This month’s visit to Lieberman Nursing Facility is Oct. 21st. The Men’s Club assists the residents there and helps celebrate Shabbat morning. Last month, our Men’s Club provided the residents with individual electronic Yahrzeit candles to help them observe the Yizkor service. Oct. 24th, Feed My Starving Children, is an opportunity to do a great Mitzvah. It’s being chaired by Dan Landau, and is an event for everyone; our Youth Group is also involved. You can reach Dan @ dblandau@me.com Oct. 24th is also the start of Hebrew Literacy 1. The class is led by Eric Yegewel and me. This is a very warm and embracing way to learn how to read Hebrew prayers in an easy and totally accepting environment. People of every age and levels of proficiency can and will learn how to read Hebrew while having a great time. I look forward to this wonderful experience. Oct.29th Is our Hanukkah Candle packing event. Every year, the Men’s Club and many other volunteers hand deliver a box of Hanukkah candles to every family of the shul within our area. Please come and help bag and pack our candles and perhaps help deliver some near your home. As the season changes, and the leaves turn brown, I hope we’ll see each other, if not at shul, then somewhere around town. Jerry Sakol Men’s Club President

Sisterhood Dear Sisters, One of the ways for a synagogue to stay vital is to stay connected with its youth. And one of the ways Sisterhood chooses to stay connected is by sending our college students a special gift at school. The feedback we get from the students is phenomenal, and we are pleased to continue this tradition. How can YOU help? Please email your college students’ names and email addresses to Lisa Neiman no later than November 1st. How easy is THAT??! As you know, Sisterhood sponsors a book club, and this month, while it is no exception, it is also very special. On Thursday, October 25th, we will be discussing Jumping Over Shadows by Annette Gendler at the home of Brenda Levin. But wait! There’s more! On Wednesday, November 8th, you will have the opportunity to actually meet the author as Sisterhood presents an evening with Annette Gendler at Beth Judea. Please join us for what will be a very special event and one you won’t want to miss. You will need to RSVP to Lisa Neiman by November 1st as there is limited seating. This event is free to CBJ members and $5.00 for all others.
Do you have any occasions coming up? Perhaps a wedding, bar or bat mitzvah, or a birthday? Please consider shopping for that special gift at our Beth Judea Judaica Shop. Ably run by the fantastic duo of Karen Nagel and Ann Lerman, these ladies manage to purchase only the finest items you could ever want, either for yourself or for that special someone else. Hours are on Tuesdays from 4-8 and Sundays from 9-12:30 when Hebrew school is in session. They are also happy to set up a private appointment to meet with you at your convenience. Contact Karen at 847-722-6621 or Ann at 847-373-8640. And if you would like to volunteer your time, they are always happy to have more workers. Won’t you give them a call?

We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.
