FROM THE RABBI requires us to engage in lessons from our past – drawing strength from what our parents and grandparents taught us: to learn, teach, and grow every day; to take responsibility and pass the holiness of Torah, importance of family, and desire for sacred traditions to the generations still to come. Teshuvah allows us to let go of the pain and hope in the future. To no one’s surprise, our High Holiday services will be different again this year and present some challenges, unlimited potential, new opportunities, and ability to create sacred space in places never before imagined. Last year, the pandemic forced us to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur outside of the synagogue, and we learned that “different” doesn’t mean “bad.” Different simply means different, and we succeeded. This year, the new “different” is focused on preparing for some members bringing in 5782 from the sanctuary and others welcoming it remotely in places other than CBJ. Our ways of celebrating evolve and change to meet the needs of our
time. That means our traditions might be different from our parents’ and grandparents’ traditions. And we should be confident that our children’s traditions will likely be different than our own. Here, “different” actually means “good.” We don’t want to live in the past and we can’t live in the future. Rather, we live in the present and need this time of year to reflect, let go, forgive, love, and appreciate all that life can be. Without question, those are some of my goals for the High Holidays, and I hope they’re among your goals, too. And just like we’ve done for over 50 years, we will walk together through this process with our CBJ family and give each other the support we need to succeed. Alison, Zachary, Evelyn, my beloved mother Marilyn, and I wish you and all your loved ones a new year filled with joy, increased health and healing, patience, love, understanding, and peace. May God inscribe and seal us in the Book of Life, and may blessings and happiness illumine our paths. Shanah Tovah, Rabbi Zimbalist

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Lauren Alexis Karp will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, October 2, 2021. Lauren is an 8th grader at Twin Groves Middle School in Buffalo Grove. She spent an amazing summer 2021 at Camp Chi and is looking forward to spending a week in Israel this March. Lauren loves to cheer and play lacrosse. For Lauren’s Mitzvah Project, she helped foster 3 dogs during this past year. Along with her family, she provided love and care to dogs in need until they found their forever homes. Lauren will be sharing this special day with her parents, Debbie and Jeff, her brother, Ethan; and her grandparents, Estelle and David Karp and Carol and Laurence Gross, as well as family and friends. Lauren would like to thank Kim Abern, Rabbi Zimbalist, and Cantor BatSarah for helping her to prepare for this milestone. She also thanks Anna Besser and the CBJ teachers who have provided her with a meaningful Jewish education.
Interfaith Book Drive Book Drive: September We are working on a book drive for preschool children. Help us to open their world and their imaginations through reading! We are collecting gently used or new books. This initiative seeks to support and encourage parents to read to their children. We also endeavor to help pre-school children gain confidence in their reading ability, in English, Spanish, or both. These books would be made available for free in a variety of community facilities and shelters. Did you know that 70% or people in jail or in juvenile court can’t read past the third grade level? The third Jewllennialz event is in the books! Twenty-three people attended our Paint & Sip gathering (some left before this photo was taken!). We were virtually instructed to complete a beautiful painting of a whale breaching towards the moon. Messes were made, all the completed paintings were equally good, of course, and fun was had by all. A huge thank you to the Sisterhood and Programming Committee for helping to fund this event!
All Congregation Beth Judea members age 55 and over, are welcome to participate.
If you or your Millennial/Gen-Z child or grandchild missed this event and are interested in attending the next event, the Jewllennialz committee is in the process of planning a Kabbalah Cookout! Join us for delicious food and Jewish mysticism taught by our very own Cantor Bat-Sarah and meet some more Jewish young adults while you're at it. Date TBD. Email jewllennialz@gmail.com information.

HESED COMMITTEE Congregation Beth Judea is more than just a building. It is a caring community, and we are here to help each other in times of need. The Hesed committee consists of dedicated volunteers who want to support our congregants when they need it most. As such, we offer a variety of services that we hope will be helpful to our CBJ congregants. The committee has five (5) sub-committees, outlined below, that would welcome the opportunity to be of assistance. Please let us know if you need assistance by calling the synagogue office or emailing the Hesed chairs Marilyn Green-Rebnord or Evan Rumack at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. Confidentiality is one of our major concerns, so please do not be embarrassed to ask for our help. Only our chairs and the volunteer will know.
If you are ill — and give permission to our clergy or office staff — we will try to have a committee member call to see how you are doing and if you need anything. This may include a hospital, rehab facility, home, or skilled nursing care visit during your illness. If you need help getting to a doctor’s appointment, religious services, synagogue programs, or such errands as prescription pickup, our committee is set up to help you. While we may not always be able to make such arrangements, we will do our best. Should you have a loss, we will try to arrange for a committee member to stay at the shiva house during the funeral service so the house will not be unattended, and no family member or friend need miss the service. We will be there to accept deliveries, but not to set up the kitchen. Rabbi will ask you if you would like this help when he is contacted. For security reasons, you will be told in advance who is coming to your home. Should you need, the committee will try to arrange to attend the evening minyan at the shiva home to ensure that a minyan is present to enable mourners to say kaddish. Minyan leaders are also willing to help. At the end of shloshim, we will contact you to check in during your bereavement. It is our intention that this period will be marked during the evening minyan by acknowledging your loved one’s name and by dedicating the reading of a psalm to them and inviting you to the service.
We would like to thank our current committee members for their commitment to helping others .
If you have any questions or wish to join us, please contact Marilyn Green-Rebnord (847-8217740) or Evan Rumack (847-253-4130).

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Religious Education Religious School for Kindergarten through Kitah Heh (7th grade) Begins on-site, on Sunday, September 12, 2021
Cantor Bat-Sarah Education Director
This school year will continue to require flexibility from our entire school community. We will be focusing on engaging our students and connecting our families. The following is just a taste of what’s in store this year.
▪ Tuesday, September 7: Rosh Hashanah Tot Services, Youth Services, Teen Discussion ▪ Sunday, September 12: Opening Day Religious School, Family Tashlich ▪ Tuesday, September 14: Religious School (Aleph – Heh) ▪ Wednesday, September 15: Family Kol Nidre Service ▪ Thursday, September 16: Yom Kippur Tot Services, Youth Services, Teen Discussion ▪ Sunday, September 19: Sukkah decorating in Religious School ▪ Tuesday, September 28: Simchat Torah celebrations during Religious School The teachers are working hard to create inviting and safe classrooms for our students. We are all so excited to see all of them this Fall and to learn from each other. One final thought: There have been many discussions, in the press and in the Jewish community, about missed learning last year. I am hiring extra Hebrew staff to address this concern. I have also been thinking a lot about all the things which these children have learned over this past year and a half, and what it is that we want them to learn going forward. More than anything, what our children should take from this school year is the knowledge that Jews take care of each other, and that the Jewish community will always be here for them. I look forward to an amazing year with our students and our community! Shanah Tovah um’tukah!

Men’s Club Shalom from the Men’s Club. I hope you had an enjoyable summer. Here we are in September and, I for one, can’t believe that the High Holidays are literally days away. Hopefully the weather will cooperate, and it won’t be so hot as it was at the end of August. Even though we are still fighting Covid-19 and the Delta variant; the Men’s Club has many things planned for this month and beyond. As always, your health is very important to us, and we make sure that whatever we are doing, safety is a high priority. Softball season ended in August, and I am happy to report that both of our teams made the playoffs. Unfortunately, neither team made it past the first round. That said, as a die-hard Cub fan would say, there is always next year. I want to thank Allen Harris, Brandt Rosen, Michael Levy, and Ken Goldstein for all their hard work and dedication to the teams. A hearty Mazel Tov to this year’s champions Temple Beth El in Northbrook. Enjoy the trophy while you can because we will be gunning for you next season. As I am writing this before it happens, we are all looking forward to this year’s Dr. Jack Rizman Memorial Golf Outing, which takes place on August 29. We are expecting 47 golfers and 40-50 people for dinner. Everything will be taking place at Buffalo Grove Golf Course- including dinner, which will be at Sal and Tony’s outside on their patio. Once again, thanks to Allen Harris, Morrie Rizman, and Chuck Walcer for all of your hard work and dedication to making this event happen. In my next article I will let everyone know the results of the golf and more about the event. As we have been doing for many years now, the Men’s Club will once again be sponsoring Project Isaiah. This year, as we did last year, we will be collecting for The Ark. There will be two options to donate non-perishable food and other items. First, as we did last year, we will have times available between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to drop off your donation, and we will also be collecting prior to Kol Nidre. The dates are September 9 and September 12 – September 15 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM or 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM. On Kol Nidre, September 15, we will be collecting prior to the service. Please look at the flyer for information. It is in The Word and in the weekly bulletin. On Sunday, September 12, we will be putting up our sukkah(s). As of this writing, I am not sure if we will be putting up both the regular sukkah and the very popular, drive-thru sukkah or just one, as we are working out some of the details. Regardless, please join us at 10:00 AM for what is always a great time. If you would like to help, please sign up or contact Sandy Victor. If you have tools (drills, screwdrivers, hammers, etc.) please bring them with you. Another annual event, our Steak & Sukkah dinner, is planned for Sunday September 26. For those of you who attended in the past, you know how much fun we have eating, drinking, and just having a good time. Plans are still be worked on, so please keep an eye on your email for more information. As I have been mentioning over the past few articles, we are planning our bi-annual retreat. It will be at The Ridge Hotel on December 11 & 12, 2021. Brandt Rosen, Steve Limer, and Alan Friedlander are chairing the event. If you have been to one of these in the past, you know what a great time we have. If you haven’t, I encourage you to sign up. While it is only for one evening, we have many wonderful events and programs including: a wonderful Havdalah service led by Rabbi Zimbalist, Hearing Men’s Voices program, a historical trivia session led by Stacie Saks, a Saturday evening program (which is still in the works), and plenty of time to just relax and schmooze with the guys. The cost for the weekend includes your accommodations, meals, and fun. Please see the flyer in the weekly bulletin or The Word. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact Brandt, Steve, or me. Last time, in 2018, we had 60 guys attend, and I know that we can get at least that many this year. Finally, I want to wish each and everyone one of you a very Happy and Healthy 5782. May you all be inscribed in the Book of Life. That’s it for now. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy. Shanah Tovah, Rob Lipka BJMC Co-President

INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council By Joanne Dicker, a Congregation Beth Judea Representative
The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council proudly serves this community. If you have any programming suggestions, please forward them to me or your IFC representatives.
Please join us and your neighbors for these upcoming programs: 1. Book drive: August and September. Check your congregation for book bins. We are working on a book drive for pre-school children. If you have books to donate call us at 224699-0386. 2. Ongoing: Food Pantry assistance. Please help your neighbors whose lives have been adversely affected by the pandemic economically. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council helps food pantries at Congregation Beth Am, Kingswood Methodist Church, St. Alphonsus, and St. Mary Parish. Your monetary donations are always welcome but especially needed at this time of year. I am also attaching a flier of requested non-perishable foods and dry goods should you wish to purchase and drop off at the food pantries directly. If you need assistance, I am also attaching contact information for our food and local pantries. Pantry Assistance Flyer 3. Upcoming: Our Annual Thanksgiving Celebration: November 21, 2021!
Joanne Dicker For more information on any of our programs, please contact us by e-mail or telephone: nwsinterfaith@gmail.com, 224-699-0386 or visit our website at: http://www.northwestsuburbaninterfaith.org Donations may be made directly to: Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council PO Box 5301, Buffalo Grove, IL 60089

An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call the Rabbi. We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.
Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff. 39

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
