ometimes printed design and photography portfolios can be boring; and pointless outside of interviews. Don’t get me wrong, the work is phenomenal and beautiful on every level, but the format is simple: lots of white space, a few paragraphs describing the projects, and clean photos of them. As my graduation loomed closer...I started to think and ponder what I wanted my printed portfolio to become. Naturally, I imagined it as a magazine; not just in format, but in it’s nature as well. I didn’t want it to be filled with my design work just to be tossed aside after a viewing; but I wanted it to live on people’s bookshelves as a resource and inspiration. This is where Embolden came into being. Overall, Embolden is a visual and verbal anthology on creativity, entrepreneurship, liberation, and boldness. It is filled with my photography, essays, and design projects, but not for the main purpose of displaying my portfolio. The main purpose is to embolden you in your everyday life; to give you audacity, fearlessness and fervor. As this semester draws to a close, I can’t help but be grateful for the entire Minneapolis Community and Technical College’s Graphic Design department;
from colleagues to professors...I can’t imagine where I’d be without them and this experience we’ve had together. From the honest & hard first year moments of calling my design pieces “Fonts gone wild” to figuring out how much of a newbie I actually was. Yet, this portfolio year has topped them all. Starting to see results and your own work pull together into something finished is a joy and dance party inducer. As you might tell already...this is just the test issue of Embolden #01. Coming later this summer, I’ll be releasing the full version with full length articles and photo collections. As much as I tried to make this happen this semester, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to be as dedicated to it as I wanted it to be. And it’s alright. My perfectionist side of myself was a little anxious not seeing this in the desired 96 page layout with everything completely finished by May 4th. Yet slapping it together haphazardly wouldn’t honor the artistic intention behind it. Even though the full issue is yet to come, may this (mini) anthology inspire, delight, challenge, and embolden you. xo, Bethany Aleshire
