BETHANY COLLEGE

VÄLKOMMEN WEEKEND 2021

Summer Swede 2021

Students: It’s hard to believe it has been over a year since the pandemic changed our day to day lives so drastically! Although you might think of Bethany as a place of higher learning for students, faculty, and staff, we learned that when faced with unimaginable uncertainty, we could do the unthinkable. Most of all we learned, once again at Bethany, that we are resilient. Of course, we now look a bit more hopeful to the fall. Our future holds a continuation of the preliminary work necessary to launch Bethany’s Path To Your Purpose so that your future is better. Your future starts while you are at Bethany – where you will be finding your path … and Bethany will work to make certain students have opportunities through intentional programming to experience their own path to the fullest! In addition to programming, renovation projects are underway to enhance the student experience by creating modern spaces for students on their journey to success as a student, success after graduation, and success as citizens. The Wallerstedt Social Science building renovation started early May and the Warner residence hall renovation started a few weeks later. The Warner renovations is projected to finish in the spring semester of 2022 and Gregory Hall renovations will follow. Although Gregory renovation will start spring semester, we hope the excitement of moving into a newly renovated Warner Hall will eradicate any inconvenience of students moving from Gregory to Warner. It is an exciting time to be at Bethany and we look forward to seeing you on campus soon!

Dr. Elizabeth Mauch, Bethany College President

Dear New Swedes, Welcome and congratulations on becoming part of the Class of 2025 at Bethany College! We strive to be a hospitable community of learners, and we cannot do that without you. Together, we will exchange ideas in classrooms that will intellectually challenge and stretch us. We will engage the diversity of this campus community and learn from the many walks of life that have led us to this place. And, we will support one another in the variety of endeavors we undertake—letting our unique gifts and talents flourish. As you become enmeshed to the rhythm of life at Bethany College, I cannot wait to see how you will leave your indelible mark on this place. Rest assured that those of us already on campus have been preparing for your arrival with great anticipation! We do this because we are committed to educating you as a whole person. College is about much more than just class. (But, you really need to go to class, too!) You’ll learn from participating in music ensembles, joining the art club, doing community service with the Newtonian Society, and competing on the field. While on campus at Bethany, we want you to discover new talents and passions you didn’t even know existed; we want you to try new things. We want to help you become involved in all kinds of different activities. You will hear this over and over in the coming weeks, but we are committed to helping you discover who you are and how you can uniquely contribute to the world around you! The pages that follow will help you prepare for this next stage of your intellectual journey. Please read through the materials carefully and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any help as you prepare to come to Lindsborg this Fall. Swede on,

Adam Pryor Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs

Dear New Swedes, My name is Matt Pfannenstiel and I am a proud 2006 graduate of Bethany College. For six years I have served as the VP of Enrollment Management, and I cannot tell you how excited I am that Bethany is one of your top choices for next year! My family and I have lived in Lindsborg since we returned and look forward to welcoming new students to our Bethany family each year! I know you may be anxious about your college choice ……. it is a big decision!! For each of you, every decision to attend Bethany will be different. Some of you may choose Bethany because of our extraordinary educational opportunities. The personal relationships you develop at Bethany with faculty and staff will become your greatest source of strength and inspiration. Our size is our strength at Bethany. We continually produce a high percentage of students who are employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation. For others, it may be that you are able to live, learn, and play in an inspiring environment. Students each year choose Bethany because they have the opportunity to continue an extra-curricular passion, whether it be vocal/instrumental music, studio or digital art, or athletics. One thing is for certain, you will be surrounded by caring people. We do not take lightly the investment you make when choosing Bethany and commit ourselves daily to offer an excellent experience.

At Bethany, you will do more than just finish a degree. You will figure out who you are and the parts of yourself you want to put into the world. I hope your last semester at high school proves to be memorable! I would encourage you to peruse the checklist enclosed, and keep it handy. This is the first of three Valkommen Newsletters you will be receiving. I am looking forward to welcoming you, officially, to Lindsborg and Bethany this coming August! For Your Success,

Matt Pfannenstiel VP of Enrollment Management Bethany College P.S. I almost forgot! If you have any questions about Bethany, or if I can help make your decision, please contact me at my personal cell phone number, 785-798-5697.

Dear New Swedes, My name is Chock Hefner, a Lindsborg native and 2010 graduate of Bethany College. I spent most of my childhood growing up in Lindsborg. Upon graduation I moved away to chase my career but have since moved back to raise my family. Lindsborg is a terrific place to live and has all the needed amenities. If you are looking for a place to stay, there are a couple hotels as well as several vacation rentals that provide a different experience than your traditional hotel. Hungry? You can choose from more than a handful of different restaurants in town, a couple coffee shops that also serve food, or you can grab something from the deli and groceries at our fantastic grocery store. Needing a place to worship? There are eight different congregations in town, and a couple more right outside of town that are always happy to welcome a new face. Are you feeling under the weather? Go get checked out at the Lindsborg Community Hospital. They have taken great care of me and my family throughout the years, and I know they will help you, too. On top of the needed servicing we have in town, there seems to always be something going on in town. Throughout the year you will find musicals performed at parks, concerts put on in different venues (including outside) around town, and numerous festivals taking place downtown and parks throughout the year. If you are looking to create your own fun, you can rent a quadricycle from the Hemslojd and go check out the many shops and art galleries. You do not have to look far to find something to do and be a part of in this town! And while you are out and about, be sure to say hello to those you see. You won’t be hard pressed to find a Bethany College alumnus working, living, and thriving in the community. I look forward to seeing you around town this fall!

Chock Hefner, Class of 2010 Bethany College Alumni Council, President

THINGS TO KNOW Finding a job on campus Career Services is dedicated to providing quality career and job preparation for students. At Bethany, various career-centered supports and programs are provided to help students develop crucial professional skills. Career Services offers assistance with resume and cover letter building, interview preparation, applying to graduate school, finding internship opportunities, applying for scholarships, and much more! We kick the year off with the On-Campus & Part-time Job fair during Välkommen Weekend! If you plan to apply for a job on campus, bring either your original social security card, original birth certificate, or U.S. passport to college with you. You can contact Rocky Krueger in the Student Development Office at kruegerri@bethanylb.edu for more information about on-campus jobs. Textbook info Bethany College students will receive all course textbooks and consumables (e.g., lab manual) for a flat fee that is included in the total cost per semester. Students can pick up their prepackaged textbooks at the Wallerstedt Learning Center room 139 during the check-in process. This is a textbook rental program, and at the end of the semester students need to return their textbooks. If a student wishes to keep a textbook, the student will be billed at 50 percent of the list price of the book. If a student fails to return their textbooks by the due date (the last day of finals week), they will be charged 50 percent of the list price per non-returned textbook. In accordance with Department of Education regulation §668.164, under qualified conditions, students have the option to opt-out and have the charge for the e-Campus Textbook Program pro-rated. With the opt-out option, the student is responsible for directly obtaining all qualified materials. To opt-out, a signed authorization is required. The opt-out authorization form must be completed 14 days prior to the first day of class for the upcoming term. Late enrollees must complete the opt-out form the same day of enrollment. Tech 101 We want to share some tips and tricks for all things technology here at BC. There is wifi on campus, but we do encourage students to bring an ethernet cable and adapter if needed to make sure their ethernet cord connects to their laptop. We also highly encourage students to bring a laptop if able. There are multiple computer labs available, the first 100 pages of printing is free, and there are printers in the labs, but for easy access from your room, a laptop is nice to have.

Routers are not allowed in residence halls, they make the internet slower for those around you. If you have an unlimited data plan, you might be able to use a hotspot from your phone if you really want quick internet access. Keep in mind that everyone on campus tends to have multiple devices they are using at one time, so it’s always smart to be plugged into ethernet—especially if you bring a game console of any kind! Not all phone providers work great in Lindsborg (we are in the Smoky Valley after all)! Verizon and Nex-tech work the best in this area; so just something to consider before you arrive on campus. You will also get a Bethany email. This is the official way to communicate at Bethany and how faculty and staff members will get a hold of you. You will get login information to this when you enroll. You will also get access to eSwede, which is our Learning Management System. You will upload assignments, check grades and use it to accept your financial aid. You will get login information when you have been accepted. If you haven’t received either login by the start of classes, contact the Office of Admissions. Devices that will connect to the campus WiFi are those newer devices equipped to run on the 5GHz frequency. If you are not sure whether your device will connect with a 5GHZ frequency, look in the user manual for tech specifications to determine if your device is compatible with 802.11ac and/or 802.11ax. To be sure, you can purchase an external adapter (802.11ac or ax adapter) specific to your device, fairly cheap online. Swede Safe There are many notable features on Swede Safe, including: • A quick link to the daily health screen form under Daily Resources • Friend Walk, which allows you to share your location with your friend, or family member, so they can assure you make it to your destination safely • Important/emergency campus notifications • Campus Emergency Management Plan • Emergency phone numbers

STUDENT

INVOLVMENTS

The Student Activities Board (SAB) is the main social programming organization for Bethany students. SAB is funded by the Student Activity Fee. The board puts on approximately four events per month, with entertainment, food, prizes, and t-shirts FREE of charge.

The Swede Government Association (SGA) serves the Bethany Student Body by hearing their concerns and making positive change on campus. They also host both educational and social events to help students continue to grow outside of the classroom.

Eight to ten students serve on the board. Positions on the board are paid, and students are hired through an application process. The student board chooses, plans, organizes, and implements all SAB activities at Bethany.

Both organizations are excited for the new school year and can’t wait to help all of the new Swedes get involved in all the fun!

ethany College Student Campus Ministry is an organization that welcomes people of any and all faiths. This group of students gathers weekly to share devotions, our lives, and fellowship. We explore and share our spiritual awareness and faith. We are open to expressing our spirituality in a safe and welcoming group. We discover together what God is up to in our lives as we grow our gifts and seek our calling. Student Campus Ministry hosts several events each year. From tie-dying masks to frosting sugar cookies, we share time in laughter, go on trips together, and walk together in faith.

Core Partners is a gathering of students who grow in relationship, following the course peer ministers. Any student who wants to deepen relationships is welcome to join this group as we seek to work together to live the Core Values of Bethany College through intentional connections. Chapel Break is held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the Pearson Chapel of the J.E. & L.E. Mabee Welcome Center. From 10:30am to 10:50am we take a break from the world, sharing music, messages, prayer, and time to simply be apart. Communion is hosted every other week with each Break time offering unique ways to be apart from the world, including, yoga, meditation, hard conversations, and breathing. Student organizations and Greek life, as well as individuals who have a message to share, assist in leading these times. I look forward to seeing all students in Chapel every semester. It is my joy to learn who students are, how their spirituality influences them, and what is going on in their day to day lives! Come and find me, say hello, and join in the fabulous community of Bethany College! ~Peace to you and Welcome!

STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER The Student Success Center Mission The Student Success Center (SSC) at Bethany College seeks to promote the holistic development of students by empowering them to make informed academic choices, aiding them in the formation of effective study habits, and cultivating a sense of personal responsibility for their educational goals. The Student Success Center is made up of 4 different parts: subject tutoring, first year advising, writing center, and academic accommodations. First Year Advising Incoming first time freshmen are assigned to a first year advisor who guides and supports them as they transition from high school to the Bethany College experience. This includes Academic Enrollment, Bethany Resources, Academic/personal support, and ADA Accommodations. Advisors include Christi Wicks - Director of Student Success/Assistant Professor of Psychology located in Wallerstedt 121 Steve Swenson - Faculty/Student Success Officer located in Wallerstedt 116 Jenni Snider - Student Success Officer/ADA Coordinator located in Wallerstedt 120 Appointments (in-person or virtual) made available through Calendly by following these steps EswedeCurrent Students-Student Success-First Year Advising. Writing Center The Writing Center is supervised by the English faculty in rotation and helps students through offering peer support at any point in the writing and revising process. Trained student tutors representing several majors are available to work with students who need help with brainstorming, organizing, thesis development, revising for sense and meaning, or surface issues of spelling and grammar. Examples: Professional emails, Reports, Research Papers, Creative Work, Spelling/Grammar.

ADA Accommodations Under the American Disabilities Act (1990), Bethany College will provide reasonable accommodations to a student who discloses a disability. These accommodations will provide equal access and opportunity to benefit from classes, programs, and activities. The SSC works primarily with Academic Accommodations. The accommodations may include note takers, extended time, testing in a distraction free environment, and accessible classrooms. Using Academic Accommodations can make a big difference in the learning experience for a student. If you have a disability you need to disclose, please contact the ADA Coordinator. The ADA Coordinator will set up an initial meeting to go over your documentation and begin the process of implementing your Academic Accommodations. Tips for success • Your disability information is kept confidential. Your information will only be released to those you request. • You may request Academic Accommodations at any point during the semester; however, it is recommended to do so at the beginning of the semester. Academic Accommodations will only begin once the Letter of Accommodation is signed and given to your instructors.

Subject tutoring Student Success Tutors provide one-on-one peer tutoring services specific to their designated discipline. Tutors are responsible for helping students understand different subjects and are expected to assess, assist, and encourage students in the learning process. Examples of tutoring: reviewing course materials, explaining various topics, study-skills, note-taking, proctoring, liaison.

• It is recommended you bring documentation of your disability (IEP, 504 Plan, doctors note) with you to the initial meeting or send it to the ADA Coordinator beforehand.

E S S E N T I A L S BETHANY COLLEGE PARKING Bethany College requires all students to acquire a parking permit from the Campus Safety Office, which is to be hung from the rear-view mirror of their vehicle when parking on campus. Parking permits are obtained during student check-in at the beginning of each semester. When assigned a parking permit, that student becomes responsible for all vehicles and citations tied to the hanger number, as well as the condition of the hanger itself. All students will receive one free parking permit that will be valid as long as they are a student of Bethany College. It will cost $10 to replace a broken or lost parking hanger. Bethany College expects all students to abide by the parking rules put in place by the College, as well as all parking laws put in place by local, state, and federal government. If a vehicle needs to be moved, cited, or the owner needs to be contacted for any other reason, the permit will be used for contact identification. Bethany College parking is enforced by the McPherson County Sheriff’s Department, Lindsborg Police Department, and Bethany College Campus Safety.

Dear Students, At Bethany we believe in the power of community. To us this means we are committed to personal and social responsibility, we care deeply for one another, and we seek to offer care and grace to all who enter our community to learn. To have a successful 2021-2022 academic year we will have to put these commitments into practice. We are looking forward to being able to open campus in ways not possible during the heights of the pandemic last year. However, doing so will depend on you. Toward this end we expect every student living on campus to be vaccinated beginning with the Fall 2021 Semester. Exceptions will only be provided for students with a medical exemption as noted by a doctor. For many, this is a sensitive subject that is politically heated; it is a divisive issue set at the place where personal choices intersect with the common good. Thus, I have not come to this decision lightly, but Bethany’s commitment to community and concern for the vulnerable has been at the forefront of my mind in making this decision. We want everyone to understand the decision that has been made and how it will work. If you have questions, please reach out to Tessa Peters who can refer you to the right contact person for questions. If getting access to the vaccine has been a problem for you, please let us know and we will do our best to help with this issue. Students will be able to submit a copy of their vaccination card on eSwede in a way similar to submitting other health related paperwork such as for the meningitis vaccine. Of course, we also understand there are people who are not eligible to receive the vaccine. Students with a letter from a primary care physician indicating there are medical reasons they are not advised to receive the vaccine will still be allowed to live on campus. However, any unvaccinated student will still need to follow all CDC and KDHE recommendations as well as Bethany policies for Covid exposure. These at a minimum include masking in the classroom and at all school sponsored events, self-isolation after potential exposure, and potentially limited access to indoor amenities (such as the gym and cafeteria). We want to have a great year together, and we know that you want to help in that endeavor. Sincerely, Dr. Adam Pryor Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs & Associate Professor of Religion
