Successful Bethany Grad “I began working at The Clayworks in McPherson, KS shortly after graduation. At that time, I needed more experience relevant to Art Therapy, and time away from school for myself, before starting a graduate program. Since I had completed my EBE (Experience Based Education) hours at The Clayworks, the connections I made there were instrumental in earning a position as a Direct Support Professional and Studio Artist at The Clayworks of Disability Supports of the Great Plains (DSGP). The Clayworks employs artists with developmental disabilities at its ceramic studio, where their creations are sold in the attached retail store. “While other classes, my EBE, and the training I completed at DSGP were important in priming me

for my experience, I learned the most in the following two years through the modeling of excellent staff, and the amazing artists of the Clayworks Studio. Beyond gaining technical knowledge of human services, I was able to practice patience, listening, and gentle teaching, while assisting in the art making process. I was able to experience some of the best moments of triumph for the artists I was working with, and I learned the absolute importance of creating connections and forming a relationship within the helping environment. “I feel that this experience beyond the classroom was

imperative to my acceptance into graduate school. After applying and being accepted into three programs, I chose Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). Their three year M.A. in Art Therapy Counseling program utilizes an experiential learning module built upon therapy in the studio, research, and practicum, with fieldwork starting in the first semester. Small class sizes (there are eleven in my cohort) and a student mentorship program allow the opportunity to connect with other students, professors, as well as many alumni, which is a pleasant reminder of my experience at Bethany College.” — Cecilia Ramsey ’15
