Summer Swede 2023

Students,

We are excited to welcome you to the 2023-2024 school year. The campus is preparing for your arrival. Gregory Hall’s renovation is complete, we have fun events and activities planned, our newly renovated Coach Ted Kessinger Family stadium is coming soon, and we are launching a new online learning management system called Swede Space.

Whatever your passion, we want you to know we are here to help you realize your ambitions. We will mentor you to be successful in the classroom, cheer you on at games, and help you build relationships to last a lifetime.

My advice to you is to take advantage of all Bethany has to offer and make your year memorable. Explore Lindsborg, take a class just for fun, go to a campus event, intern for a career of interest, or sign up for a field trip or service project.

We look forward to a great year!

Sincerely,

OUR SPIRITUAL FOUNDATION

Bethany College is affiliated with the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America). We celebrate the diverse spiritual, religious, and philosophical traditions of our students, faculty, and staff. There is a place for you here!

Welcome Swedes!

I am excited to begin this academic year with you! I am Pastor Melissa Woeppel, and I serve as the Campus Pastor. Part of the Bethany College experience includes spiritual development as we prepare students for lives of faith, learning, and service. To that end, my office provides opportunities for students of any or no religious, spiritual or philosophical background. I am available for conversations of care and support and am able to connect you to resources on and off campus.

Each week while classes are in session, time is set apart for Chapel Break. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:30 a.m., we meet in the Bud Pearson Swedish Chapel of the J.E. & L.E. Mabee Welcome Center for these 20-minute services. They include time for reflection, community building, spiritual practice, and religious ritual and tradition. During this time, you will have the opportunity to hear not only from me, but also from faculty, staff, and your own student peers.

Spiritual and religious life at Bethany is decidedly ecumenical and interfaith. Guided especially by the College’s core values of Community and Hospitality, there is a place for you here. Together we will be cared for and supported. Together we will be nurtured and stretched. Together we will create spaces where each of us are valued, honored, and loved.

I look forward to seeing you on campus soon!

MAILROOM

BETHANY COLLEGE PARKING

Bethany College requires all students to acquire a parking permit from Student Affairs Office, which is to be hung from the rear-view mirror of their vehicle when parking on campus. Parking permits are obtained during student check-in at the beginning of each semester. When assigned a parking permit, that student becomes responsible for all vehicles and citations tied to the hanger number, as well as the condition of the hanger itself. All students will receive one free parking permit that will be valid as long as they are a student of Bethany College. It will cost $10 to replace a broken or lost parking hanger.

Bethany College expects all students to abide by the parking rules put in place by the College, as well as all parking laws put in place by local, state, and federal government. If a vehicle needs to be moved, cited, or the owner needs to be contacted for any other reason, the permit will be used for contact identification. Bethany College parking is enforced by the McPherson County Sheriff’s Department, Lindsborg Police Department, and Bethany College Student Affairs Office.

NAIA ELIGIBILITY INFO

Student-athletes are required to register with PlayNAIA.org before being deemed eligible to play. Please go to PlayNAIA. org, register, and send your high school and/or college transcripts and ACT/SAT scores. Questions? Call 816-595-8300 to speak with someone from the Eligibility Center.

PRE-PARTICIPATION PROCEDURES

Student-athletes are required to complete a series of paperwork prior to being cleared to practice or play. There are six forms that must be completed along with biographical, insurance, and emergency contact information. Please know that you will need to provide your Social Security Number on ATS - this will be needed any time you are sent to see a Physician as well as for filing secondary insurance claims. Please follow the following flow charts:

BETHANY COLLEGE DRUG TESTING POLICY

Bethany College believes it is a privilege for a student-athlete to represent the College, both on and off the field, with character and integrity. Therefore, students are encouraged to promote good physical health and well-being. Studentathletes should read and understand the Drug Education and Drug Testing Policy set by Bethany College.

Drug Testing Policy can be found at:

Bethany College (KS) (bethanyswedes.com)

Bethany College has random drug testing several times during the academic year. Bethany College reserves the right to drug test any student several times per academic year when reasonable suspicion suggests illegal drug use. Refusal by the student-athlete to submit to a drug test will be considered a positive test. Therefore, the student-athlete in question will be subject to any and all sanctions associated with a positive drug test. Specific sanctions and consequences of violations are outlined in the student handbook located on eSwede.

HEALTH INSURANCE REQUIREMENT FOR STUDENT ATHLETES

All student-athletes are required to have valid, qualifying primary insurance throughout the entire academic year. All student-athletes are required to complete the insurance waiver process twice per year; once prior to the start of fall semester, and once prior to the start of spring semester. Insurance will be verified throughout the year. All international students are required to enroll in the United Healthcare Student Resources Plan, as well as student-athletes who do not have valid, qualifying primary insurance that can be verified. The cost for United Healthcare is $2,094; coverage dates are 8/1/237/31/24. The charge will be administered on students’ account. If your insurance waiver is approved, once the approval is complete, the Business Office will remove the charges from your student account. This may take up to a few weeks.

Insurance verification instructions: Waive Your School’s Insurance - Bethany College - First Student.

The insurance waiver deadline for the fall semester is September 6, 2023. The insurance waiver deadline for spring semester is January 19, 2024

In addition, all student-athletes have a mandatory fee of $240 for secondary/catastrophic insurance. Pre-existing injuries as defined by a physician, as well as non-athletics related injuries/illness, are not covered by secondary insurance.

When a student-athlete sustains an athletics-related injury, student-athletes must report the injury immediately to the Athletic Training staff. The student-athlete’s primary insurance is billed first. Once primary insurance has been billed, the BMI secondary policy then needs to be billed. Any balance remaining after both primary and secondary insurances have been billed is the student-athlete’s responsibility. Bethany College has no control over what insurance companies choose to cover and pay; the College is not responsible for payment of medical bills.

ATHLETICS PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physicals and orthopedic screenings for fall student-athlete newcomers will be completed on the Bethany College campus on August 4, 2024 and August 22, 2024 by Bethany College Athletic Trainers, our team physician (Dr. Pyle), and his team. The cost of the physicals is $25; student-athletes must have cash or check at the time of the physical. Please make checks payable to SRHC. This is MANDATORY and NO other physicals will be accepted. Returning students will not need a physical, unless otherwise instructed by AT/Dr. Pyle. Returning students will need a physical if they did not have one in fall 2022.

Physical Waiver can be found at: Bethany College (KS) (bethanyswedes.com)
