Presidents Report A Message from the President
H
ello and welcome to another edition of the Queensland Police Sporting Association (QPSA) Inc. Magazine. After 13 years in the chair I’m back and hopefully for another 2 years at least, or until we have successfully staged the next Australasian Police and Emergency Services (AP&ES) Games on the Sunshine Coast from the 8th to the 15th October 2016. It is really pleasing to be able to take up the challenge of managing your association and overview the delivery of the AP&ES Games with most of the same dedicated and loyal faces and some new and keen members on the QPSA Committee.
Executive Committee: Vice President Scott Adams, Secretary Gary Tobin and Treasurer Trevor Wendt. It was great to see Trevor Wendt awarded Life Membership at our last Annual General Meeting. Committee: Joanna Stone/Nixon, Barry Smith, Ross Murphy, Gavin De Le Cruz, Paul Houston, James Owen The QPSA has had a busy and successful 2015, providing numerous amount of support and sponsorship to members and their various sporting activities. Also providing advice and support to the appointed AP&ES Games Managers A/Sen.Sgt Brett Price and Sgt. Greg Croft and their team on the Sunshine Coast Sgt. Mark Wright and Sen.Const Cassandra Pukallus. The team delivered and exceptional launch of the 2016 Games at Sunshine Coast Stadium, attended by the Police Minister, the Commissioner, all local politicians including the Mayor, and Executive members of the Ambulance and Fire Services and sponsors. The Sunshine Coast Council have been extremely supportive from the beginning and have provided excellent venues all in close proximity to what will be our central hub at Sunshine Coast Stadium, Kawana. I hope everyone will mark their diaries for October next year where we will provide a fabulous week of sport, entertainment and great tourist attractions for the entire family. Finally on behalf of the QPSA Inc. committee I wish everyone a happy safe and enjoyable Xmas and New Year. Look forward to seeing you all in October 2016 John McCoomb President QPSA Inc.

Games Report Games Manager Trevor Wendt
T
he QPCU Queensland Police Games incorporating Emergency Services was conducted between on the 17th and 18th October 2015. The Games had approximately 523 competitors across 14 sports at 6 separate venues. The following is an approximate break down of sports and competitors:
4
T
he registration included participants receiving a QPSA water bottle which was distributed at various venues. The Games were again aimed at encouraging family members and children to compete from all the emergency services. I believe this has huge potential for future games and with more sponsorship and publicity this is certain to increase numbers.

GAMES Report Coordinators
M
ost coordinators from 2013 again volunteered their services as coordinators for their sports. This went a long way to the success of the sports as these coordinators already had previous experience and contacts both within the services and also within the sport itself. This year we picked up first timers in running their event in the crossfit (fitness challenge) Rebecca Smith and equestrian with Karen Heit. Both coordinators doing a fantastic job. It was my intention to only run the sports at the Academy but I was approached by coordinators to utilise existing venues away from the Academy. Also, a thank you to Gary Tobin, Barry Smith, Brad Sernig and Ross Murphy who assisted with the setting up of the courts and the refereeing of indoor soccer and BBQ on the Sunday. All coordinators volunteered many hours in their own time to coordinate their sports and this has to be acknowledged. Most coordinators received support from their OIC’s and Managers. A thankyou to our retired Inspector and current President John McCoomb who coordinated the indoor rowing. It is hoped that for the 2016 APANDES Games coordinators may have access to sporting leave, or coordinate in work time or given time off in lieu.
Thankyou I would like to congratulate all co-ordinators from all the sports because without them there would be no sporting events. They have put in a considerable amount of time and effort to organise and run their respective events. Our sponsors, Remserv, QPCU and WOS always do a fantastic job. In particular Heidi from Remserv who organised a BBQ on the Saturday with her fantastic team. All proceeds from the BBQ went to “Relay for Life” (Cancer Council). A total of $430.00 was raised from the BBQ. I would also like to thank the HUB crew, Lindsay Kilpatrick, Andrea Ruston, Joanna Stone and Rebecca Dale for their help in setting up and packing sports equipment for the coordinators. Finally I would like to say thank you to the many volunteers (especially recruits) who assisted all sports. T W WENDT 2015 COMMITTEE MEMBER QUENSLAND POLICE GAMES 2015

CROSSFIT The Fitness Challenge
T
he Fitness Challenge (Crossfit) attracted around 40 combined male and female competitors. The day consisted of a briefing to competitors regarding the events to be contested over the day as these are unknown to them on arrival. The first event was the Academy obstacle course which was made all the more difficult by adding some sand bags weighted to 20kg. These had to be carried over each obstacle by the competitors. The obstacle itself consists of 22 obstacles (lifting, pulling jumping and running) over 760metres.. (see photo’s).

CROSSFIT The Fitness Challenge cont..
N
ext event was the clean and jerk where competitors had to add their chosen weight to a bar and carry out as many lifts as possible in a certain time limit. (photo). The third event was in the Academy pool where competitors had to swim a certain distance and then extend themselves out of the pool, reps all counted and calculated on a time frame. (photo). The final event was carried out on the Academy oval where competitors had to drag a weight (50kg) down the length of the oval (100m) and again calculated on times and distance. Overall a very tough day at the office for these competitors, then again that’s what they love.

A big thankyou to Chris (my husband) and the many recruit volunteers who were terrific on the day.

S
ome of our competitors arrived at QSEC stables on Friday in readiness for our Competition, with the remainder arriving on Saturday. Two very keen competitors arrived on Thursday. A small welcome BBQ on Friday night saw a presentation to our Volunteer MC for the weekend Mr Peter McAuley.
T
he final class to be competed on Saturday was the Susan Maxwell Challenge. All participants were very enthusiastic. The winner, Laura Bear riding Rosie Artful Breeze, was presented with a Memorial Plaque and a Voucher from WestVets. This presentation was made by Sue’s husband, Patrick and son, Ben. The Challenge was judged by Sue’s friend Shirley Sommers. All participants thoroughly enjoyed this class.

EQuestrian Equestrian Event at QSEC Wrap-Up
F
inally we would like to thank the QSEC staff who provided much need assistance and answered all our questions. This was the first time the Equestrian has been competed at QSEC and the venue did not disappoint. The organising committee was totally exhausted by the end of the Games. A survey was sent to all participants to help make the next event better and feedback has been reviewed. We look forward to presenting a program for the 2017 Games. Planning has already commenced for the 2016 Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games. This event will be run over three days and include an expanded Western program and Reining.

SAVED FOR THE GAMES
A dark horse in the Police and Emergency Services Games
Z
eb or ‘Duke of Kyalla’ completed his last race in 2014 at Redcliffe and tragically was sent to the sale yards with a very grim future in sight. Fortunately Save A Horse Australia – Horse Rescue happened to attend on the day. Zeb, standing tall and towering above all the other horses, caught the eye of SAHA’s president Amanda Vella. She stepped in and outbid a meat buyer to purchase him for a mere $220. This beautiful rescue horse donned the name Zeb after he was put in a very stylish zebra-striped rug. Zeb then found his feet and Acting Senior Sergeant Bromley adopted him in late 2014. After having a 25 year break from riding, it’s almost as if Acting Senior Sergeant Bromley and Zeb co-ordinated their paths to find each other at the right time. “I used to ride horses when I was younger and I loved it but just fell out of it. I began to volunteer with Save A Horse Australia and when I moved to acreage, I decided to adopt Zeb,” Acting Senior Sergeant Bromley said.
This beautiful horse Zeb, once headed for the meat sale competed at the equestrian competition of the Queensland Police and Emergency Services Games with his owner Acting Senior Sergeant James Bromley of Ipswich District
“We were very green together and everything was very new. We took some lessons and it’s incredible how far we have come. Zeb is a very quick learner and has shown a lot of potential. “We started training only January this year and we’ve already competed in a number of events locally.

ut of around 18 competitors, we were placing mid-field, which I was very happy with. “In April we competed at the SAQ’s (Standardbred Association Queensland) State Dressage Championships and won the Judges’ Choice Award. I was very proud of Zeb and the obvious potential the judges saw in us as up and coming competitors.
On October 17 and 18 from 7am each day, the Equestrian competition of the Queensland Police & Emergency Services Games was competed at the Queensland State Equestrian Centre at Caboolture.
Spectators were welcome and entry was free. Competitors were representing Police, Ambulance, Corrective Services and other areas and included current staff, previous employees and family members including children.
“Later in August we competed at the SAQ’s State Hack Championships and won Maiden Hack State Champion. Our result was very rare for first-time competitors. “He is a very intelligent horse. He’s a gentle giant really. It’s hard to believe the fate that was once in store for him. “Zeb is more than just standard. I was very proud to be competing with him at the Police Games “We usually compete in the preparatory dressage events. But that weekend, we were competing in the preliminary level for the first time.

A very big congratulations to Acting Senior Sergeant James Bromley and Zeb who competed in the 2015 Police and Emergency Services Games. The pair took out the Silver medallion for Best Presented Hack 16hh and over, Bronze Medallion for Newcomer Hunter and Sixth Place Ribbon for Rider Class over 40yrs. Not bad for a team that have only been riding together since the start of the year!

T
he 2015 Police and Emergency Games Hockey was contested again at the Easts Brisbane Hockey Facility at Carina. The weather was perfect for a great day of competition at an excellent facility. Games were mixed with 20 minutes a half with a 2 minute half time. Numbers were slightly down this year however after a few late player drafts, a six team competition was undertaken with sides from the Queensland Ambulance Service and a team from the Gympie Fire Service. The QPS sides entered were from Metro South, Ipswich, as well as a city based side and a Barbarians side made up of people from all facets of Policing. The hockey was played at a very high level, with most sides containing representative players of different levels. Attrition started to take its toll as all sides starting losing games and it became hard to pick who would end up with the gold medal. The loss of two goal keepers through injury meant that keepers were in high demand as the day went on. A big shout out to Shelley LAIRD who put the goal keeping pads on for the first time in 25 years and played like she had never stopped playing. That is the spirit of the games and what it is all about.
29
T
he points table remained very close until the end when the team from Ipswich prevailed. Their points were even with the team from Metro All Sorts, however a 2 goal advantage in for and against meant that Metro All sorts must take home the silver. Ipswich Mayor Paul
Pisasale would have been proud of his Ipswich side as they not only took the chocolates on the field, they looked a million dollars off the field also. The keys to Ipswich city and a ticket tape parade will no doubt await the Ipswich side in the near future.

he side from Metro South led by Steve FANKER cemented the bronze medal with a solid days hockey. The player of the tournament trophy went to Leslie ANDERSON who showed great skills and a competitive nature throughout the games. The female players far outshone the men on the day with a number of the men now entering the veteran’s stage of hockey, with one in particular player from Ipswich definitely becoming known as yesterday’s hero. A big thank you to Retired Detective Sergeant Alex GRANLUND (APM) for his volunteering at yet another Queensland games, Deputy Commissioner Steve GOLLSCHEWSKI for his presentation of the medals and to Dawn AASKOV for organising the games schedule. Another big thank you to Eric GREEN and Scott ADAMS for their work on the Barbeque for a much deserved lunch break. The Queensland Police and Emergency Services hockey players will now look towards the Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games on the Sunshine Coast in 2016 where they will hope to continue their recent good form from previous games. The women are hoping to

MARTIAL ARTS MARTIAL ARTS – OVERVIEW
T
he competition consists of: Kata (demonstration of technique); Kumite (sparring); and an Open demonstration event. It is aimed at ALL LEVELS and COLOUR BELTS of martial arts. This competition has evolved since 2001 when it was first offered at the Australia & New Zealand Police Games – Gold Coast. Each Police Games has seen a variety of competitors from varying martial art forms including: Ju-Jitsu; Karate; Taekwondo; Muay Thai & Kick-Boxing; Wing Chung Kung Fu; American Kenpo; Jeet Kune Do; and Ninjitsu compete on equal ground. Winners of the Games have come from Shinbukan Karate; Jim Brophy Australasian Taekwondo & Hapkido; and Koshiki Karate. The Kumite is ‘light-contact’ with all forms of Martial Arts competing on equal terms. The format of the fighting contest is restricted to traditional style sparring and fighting and excludes elbows; throws; grappling; or any other close-quarter style contact martial art. Kumite is intended to attract all styles of Martial Arts. It is designed to enable participants to compete on equal terms. Progress to the final rounds occurs via round by round elimination, with a possible repechage for those eliminated should numbers dictate.
K
ata consists of a progressive round by round elimination, and players are expected to perform a minimum of three (3) different kata forms. In 2007, a demonstration event was offered for Weapons and/or miscellaneous events such as Choreographed self defence or discipline specific demonstration or individual weapon use such as nun-chukkas or Bo-staff. This will again be offered and opens up an opportunity to display unique or discipline specific demonstrations. Standard or School specific Martial Arts uniform required to be worn during the competition. Those participating in Kumite must wear a mouth guard, in addition to fist, shin and instep protectors. Headgear optional but recommended. Equipment will be available for use by those participants not in possession of their own protective gear.

Kids Triathlon Kids Tri Round-up
O
n Saturday the 17th October 2015 the kids triathlon was held at the Queensland Police Service Academy. There were two categories, the mini kidz Tri and the Tuff kidz tri. Both events were totally closed to traffic and took place entirely on the grounds of the Queensland Police Academy, Oxley. This is the 7th year in a row for this event. The first of the events started at 10.30am with the mini event. Mini Kidz Triathlon: This event was aimed at the 8 and unders. This event attracted around 30 competitors and involved the kidz completing a 25 meter swim (one lap of the heated pool), a 1km bike ride (Academy car park) and finishing with a 400metre run (one lap of the oval). Many parents assisted their kids out in the swim, bike and run with many parents finishing the event beside them. Great work from all the kids. The next event was the Tuff Kidz Triathlon: This event aimed at the 12 and unders will took place at the completion of the Mini Kidz triathlon and was a little tougher than that the first event. It consisted of a 100m swim, 3km bike ride with an 800metre run to finish. Approximately 15 competitors completed this one with some of them progressing up from the previous shorter one for the first time. All competitors finished and received a finishers medal and water bottle for their efforts. Thanks to Jim Owen (coordinator for the event) and the many recruit helpers who marked the course and assisted the little ones on the right path.
