GETTING EXCITED ABOUT EARTH DAY!
By Morgan Casey April is here and spring is in the air! This month celebrates Earth Day, Arbor Day, and National Environmental Week, making it a great time to have a conversation with your Little about what else is in the air pollution. Open up a dialogue about pollution and our impact on the Earth. Start by seeing what your Little knows about the reciprocal relationship between people and the environment, and how it impacts our lives. Discuss the environment from perspectives relating to air, water, soil, weather, energy, and even the food we eat. You can set a “green” example for your Little by taking small steps toward being more environmentally friendly. Take your Little grocery shopping for healthy meal ingredients and bring reusable grocery bags.
Go Hiking! There are lots of parks, trails and nature preserves within driving distance you and your Little can explore. Nahant Marsh Exploration, April 9th, 10:00 a.m. Learn about local plant and animal communities through hands-on activities at Nahant Marsh. April’s event includes a guided hike and outdoor yoga. Living Lands and Waters Tree Wrapping, April 4th-15th, East Moline. Help wrap and package baby trees. To volunteer, sign-up on the LL&W website. River Action’s Earth Day Celebration, Saturday, April 23, 9 a.m. to noon. This year the project will be a clean-up at the Hennepin Park at Lock 30 in Milan, IL. They will be doing invasive plant removal, trash pick-up, and pollinator garden planting. Directions: Take Airport Road east of Milan. North on Frontage Road (look for the brown Hennepin sign) and then take an immediate right. Follow to the parking lot. For more information contact Eileen at espies@riveraction.org. Over the years our Career Navigator Tours have provided inspiration and direction for Littles. BBBS has heard many stories about Littles deciding to enroll in higher education to begin work on a degree related to what they experienced on a CN Tour. Exploring career options and providing your Little not only with ideas, but with hope that they can pursue their dreams is very important in providing the Little with the motivation and encouragement they need.

RAVE ABOUT YOUR LITTLE: WAY TO READ CYRUS! Cyrus is 11 years old and in the 5th grade. He enjoys playing games and spending time with his Big, Mary Thee. Cyrus’ school has required him to read 40 books throughout the 2015-16 school year. Cyrus struggled to find the perfect strategy to help complete his reading goal. With the help of his Big, Mary, the match finally figured out the perfect method to help reach his target of 40 chapter books. Now Cyrus enjoys reading and has recently completed an entire Goosebumps book. Great job Cyrus and keep up the great work!

MONEY-WISE KIDS: NEEDS VS WANTS
Tori’s breath caught in her throat. There it was, the latest iPhone. She really, really wanted it even though the phone next to it was ten times cheaper. Making decisions isn’t always easy. Trying to figure out your needs from your wants is even harder. Tori was torn. She thought she needed a new phone. But did she really need it or did she want it? It was making her head spin. She fought the overwhelming urge to scream.
designer version that costs $50 more? Even though both will keep me warm? Remember... What do you need? What do you want? How are you going to get it?
One of the biggest obstacles to establishing a better financial future is knowing when to say no. Tori can get a better understanding of the situation by determining her needs from her wants. A want is something Tori would like to have, but doesn’t need it in order to live. A need is something she has to have in order to live. Needs include food, a place to live and clothes. Here’s the tricky part, sometimes what she thinks she needs is actually a want. Tori needs clothes to wear, but she doesn’t need a brand new expensive pair of jeans when a less expensive pair will do. When Tori stopped to think about it more, she realized she wanted a new phone, she didn’t need it. She studied her old phone. There wasn’t anything wrong with it. Maybe a little scratched up, but that’s not a reason to get a new phone. Remember, everyone’s needs and wants are different. You need to determine what’s best for you. When trying to determine your needs and wants, ask yourself the following questions: Do I need this to get to school? Do I need a bike, skateboard or a car? I need a new sweater for winter, but is it necessary to have the
