DEAR MATCH COACH: BACK TO SCHOOL WITH MY LITTLE School is just around the corner. What should I do as a Big to re-engage my Little when our school-based visits resume? We hope our Bigs in the School-Based and School-Based Plus programs are looking forward to resuming visits with their Littles! We at BBBS are excited to kick off the school year as well. BBBS staff conducts meetings with each school during the first two weeks. After that, you will hear from your match coach with updated information about your Little such as their new teacher’s name, their lunch time and if needed, their new school. Please wait to hear from your match coach before beginning visits for the year.
set new patterns. Do more of what you liked last year and less of what you didn’t. For example if you found yourself buying lunch for each visit for both of you and you felt obligated rather than wanting to do it, set up a new routine such as a rewards program where you buy lunch when they receive certain grades on their report card or reach certain milestones. It is up to you. Different matches spend their time differently.
You will receive a goodie bag at the school filled with fun activities to do with your Little. Check with the front desk to pick up your gift! Please remember that you are welcome to attend any activity that takes place on school grounds. Check in with your Little and consider attending a choir concert, play or festival. TAKE FLIGHT! TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20th The BBBS 2015 Big Impact Event will be offering a one-of-a-kind training opportunity for business professionals that helps them accomplish the following:
Enhance effective collaboration within the workplace. Build ownership of plans that are developed. Gain a better understanding of the “interconnectedness” of various roles within an organization. Create greater individual and team accountability. Identify obstacles that hinder plan implementation. Manage time and “task saturation”. Adapt to emergent change in the marketplace. Tap into organizational resources to improve knowledge and experience. Develop a culture of continuous improvement. Learn about the importance of mentoring in the workplace and in life.
The four-hour, “Take Flight” workshop on Tuesday, October 20th will be conducted by an elite, executive training organization called Afterburner, Inc.
Afterburner speakers and trainers are former jet fighter pilots who have been taught goal setting and implementation of goals through a model called “Flawless Execution”. Their unique perspective helps business professionals truly understand the importance of creating a solid plan and working it while adapting to fast-paced change. Afterburner has trained more than 1.5 million business professionals and have earned a 9.1 (out of 10) rating over 19 years of training. 85% of their client list is in the fortune 50 list. Opportunities for training like this don’t come along very often. Big Brothers Big Sisters works with dozens of businesses who support the organization by allowing BBBS to do workplace volunteer recruitment presentations. In addition, area businesses support oneto-one youth mentoring programs with their donations and sponsorship support. BBBS wanted to find a way to further connect with area businesses and strengthen their relationship. After meeting with businesses about becoming a presenting sponsor of this event, BBBS began its search for just the speakers who could offer business professionals a very unique and effective training session. This is when BBBS connected with Afterburner. If you, or the company you work for, think you could benefit from a training experience with Afterburner, then watch for more information coming very soon on the BBBS website, www.bbbsmv.org. SOME GREAT SUMMER FUN! DEKHOCKEY!
Big Brothers Big Sisters provides many activities for Littles and Bigs to participate in, dekhockey being just one. Located at Crow Creek Park in Bettendorf, Bigs, Littles, as well as some of the Big Brothers Big Sisters staff came together to play a game of dekhockey. Dekhockey is a fun and challenging game played much like regular ice hockey but without the ice and skates. Two teams split into groups of 3 and played to a game of 9 and then a shoot out took place for each individual to show off his or her shooting skills in an opportunity to score a goal.
The dekhockey activity provided a great way for bigs and littles to come together and spend quality time building their relationship while having fun as well as meeting other bigs and littles in the program. It was also a great opportunity to get outdoors and be active during the summer months while working on sportsmanship skills, teamwork, and confidence in more competitive, active sports. If your match could use some physical activity and fun dekhockey is a great way to go!
Thank you to QC Dekhockey for hosting us for this fun event!

A GREAT SUMMER AT THE SOUTHERN MENTORING CENTER Yet another month of incredibly positive things in Warren and McDonough Counties, first of which is…we have 2 great NEW MATCHES! Fun activities and loads of support from the community continue to be the highlight of our summer! NEW MATCHES In July we made 2 brand new matches! Big Sister Sarah (a BBBS intern for the summer) was matched with Little Sister Kateria. Both Kateria and Sarah are long-time veterans of the BBBS program, and the stars aligned to bring them together. Little Sister Kateria is a natural swimmer and loves to play outside; Big Sister Sarah is excited to get the chance to try new and fun activities with Little Sister Kateria. Big Sister Natasha is new to our program, so it’s her good luck to be matched with Little Sister Genesis. Genesis has been with us for a year already, and in all that time has never frowned. (It’s amazing how happy this kid is!) Genesis couldn’t wait to meet Natasha, and had tons of things she wanted to talk about at their introduction. They had a list a mile long of activities to do together by the end of the introduction.
Macomb’s American Legion hosted, and DJ Ellemenopee (brand new Board member Cody Duffie) was on the tables. The Lane Family Band put on an astounding live acoustic performance during the intermission. Our winning team is pictured here; a nice mix of Macomb community members, who came together to raise funds for the kids and have a great time at the event. Thanks to local businesses for donating prizes, thanks to everyone who played, and thanks to the Macomb community for continuing to support us! HERITAGE DAYS Heritage Days was a busy weekend for BBBS. BBBS staff, a Board member, Bigs, Littles, and even a mother of a Little walked in the parade and had a great time. Afterwards, we all got frozen yogurt at FYI. Later that day, Little Brother Jaylen and Little Sister Genesis represented BBBBS in a pie eating contest. It was a spectacular day of energy and participation, and Macomb took notice: when introducing Jaylen and Genesis at the contest, Mayor of Macomb Mike Inman took a moment to tell the good-sized crowd that BBBS is an important part of this community and is working every day to improve the lives of local children. Many thanks to Mayor Inman! BURLINGTON BEES GAME
CONGRATULATIONS to both of our new matches! DONATION We had a surprise $500 donation from The Mississippi Rat Pak Car Club. Not only do they host Macomb’s favorite car shows, but they also give back. These local car fanatics have helped other organizations in the past, and were excited for the chance to help BBBS- a program that would directly benefit the children of their own community. Many thanks to the Rat Pak for their generous donation and their faith in our office! CONTINUED COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR BBBS We reported in the July newsletter that Macomb churches and organizations were coming together to provide 100 healthy weekend lunches (one for Saturday, one for Sunday) to our Littles, and that train has kept rolling. The last 3 weekends in a row have been done by Wesley Methodist Church! Here are photos of those 3 crews:
MUSIC TRIVIA On Saturday June 27 we held our third annual Music Trivia fundraiser.
The Burlington Bees invited BBBS to attend a game in 2014, and it was the most fun we had all summer. This year, The Bees are providing free tickets for Bigs & Littles, letting one of our Littles throw out the first pitch, and even invited the Littles to run onto the field with the starting players. BBBS loves the Burlington Bees! AND, this year Jimmy John’s will be providing free dinner for all the Littles after the game! It promises to be a wonderful afternoon at a beautiful ballpark. Look for photos in next month’s newsletter. SAVE THE DATE The 2015 Bowl for Kids’ Sake event will be on Saturday November 7 2015, at Digger’s College City Bowl. Digger’s has been happy to donate the entire alley to our biggest annual fundraising event for the past 12 years, and we love them for their generosity and unwavering support. We’re working hard to make this year’s the best BFKS sake Macomb has ever seen, so make sure you save that date!

MONEY-WISE KIDS: PROTECTING YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States. These days, anyone can be targeted by a scam intent on stealing money or collecting personal information like Social Security numbers, bank account numbers and passwords, that can be used to access accounts and go on a buying or borrowing spree. Once you get your first credit card, loan or open a saving account you need to work to protect your financial future. There are a lot of scams out there including text messages, emails and phone calls. Some will ask for your account number telling you there’s a problem with your account. Being knowledgeable of this kind of situation will help you spot a scam before it’s too late. Here are a couple techniques used by fraudsters:
they have your information. Please remember no financial institution will contact you for your account number. Delete these right away. Phishing. This occurs when fraudsters use spoofing and spamming to lure you into providing personal and financial information on the Internet. After reading the types of scams above, you might be wondering ‘What can I do to protect myself?’ Assume that any offer that “sounds too good to be true” – especially one from someone you don’t know or an unfamiliar company – is probably a scam. Fraudsters often pose as charities or business people offering awards, jobs, or other “opportunities.” Be careful if you’re being pressured to make a quick decision and you’re asked to send money or provide bank account information before you receive anything in return. A good rule is to always call your financial institution to verify.
Spoofing. This is when fraudsters create a near exact replica of an existing website. Through spamming they’ll send an email asking you to click on the link below to verify your account number. When you click on the link you’ll go to a site that looks like your financial • Look at your bank statements and bills as soon as they arrive and institution’s website. Once you fill in the information and click submit, report any discrepancy or anything suspicious, such as an unauthorized withdrawal or charge. • Be cautious of request to “update” or “confirm” personal information, especially your Social Security number, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, personal identification numbers, your date of birth or your mother’s maiden name in response to an unsolicited call, letter or email. • Delete unknown email messages. Don’t download attachments or click on links included in the email. • Don’t send personal or financial information via email. Make sure that you’re on a secure, encrypted website before entering personal or financial information. A good indication that the site is secure is the prefix https or a padlock symbol before the web address.
Keep in mind, anytime you feel you are being scammed call your financial institution or billing company right away. The best thing you can be is knowledgeable about any situation. The faster you catch it, the quicker the fraudsters can be stopped and your financial future safe.
