What really matters in school? Reading, writing and arithmetic. Some say that is what really matters in elementary school. Of course, learning the “academic basics” is very important to further a child’s education, but studies show that “academic habits” may be even more important to the long term success of the child. A child needs to learn self-discipline early on in their life. They need to understand how to prioritize what is most important and then discipline themselves to get it done before moving on to “the fun stuff”.

guide is very important in supporting that kind of structure in your Little’s life. You can reinforce that when you visit your Little at school, or when you see them at night or over the weekend. Ask about homework and ask if it’s done. Self motivation is also very important to learn. Help them with setting goals that THEY attain. Reward them with something fun to do or a small treat if they succeed in accomplishing a goal they have set.

Sign Your Teen Little Up for Job Readiness! Don’t forget to sign your 13+ year old (on up) Little for the BBBS Job Readiness program. For Littles who are 15 and older, this series of workshops could lead to a Youth Corps job this summer! KICK OFF: Wed., Feb. 17 5:30 p.m. at Kaplan College. COLLEGE NIGHT: Mon., Feb. 22, 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. St. Ambrose University.

BALD EAGLE DAYS: Fri.-Sun., Jan. 31—Feb. 2. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Explore dozens of booths and learn about what impacts our region’s environment. (24 tickets available).
