MACOMB CELEBRATES NATIONAL MENTORIING MONTH!
Chris (L) and Dave (R)
Talan (CTR) and Ethan (R)
NEW MATCHES Back in December, on the last 2 working days of 2014, we made 2 new matches! Both of these volunteers are Police Officers in Macomb, and we couldn’t be any happier about having them join our program. The spirit of service runs strong in these parts, and it means a lot to see our community leaders getting involved. Join me in welcoming Little Brother Chris and Big Brother Dave (left) and Little Brother Talan and Big Brother Ethan (right). Fun fact, Talan’s mother is the first of our parents to get in a match-day photo!

top- quality volunteers. What a magnificent group of people! The communities of McDonough and Warren Counties, and every one of these kids, thoroughly appreciate what you are doing!

MONEY-WISE KIDS: MANAGING YOUR MONEY By IHMVCU Staff When managing your money it’s good to be prepared and knowledgeable. Here are the five basic principles of managing your money to help you get started – Earn, Save and Invest, Protect, Spend, and Borrow. Earn. After you earn money (from a job, an allowance or walking your neighbor’s dog) what do you do with it? What are some of your options? Save and Invest. After you’ve earned your money you have a lot of options. You can spend it, which is always fun, but what if you want something down the line that you don’t have all the money for right now? You’ll need to save or invest it. There are many different options when it comes to saving and investing your money. Research is key. Pick the one that’s right for you. Protect. There are a lot of scams out there. They come in the form of text messages, emails and phone calls. They ask for your account number telling you there’s a problem with your account. Assume that any offer that “sounds too good to be true” – especially one from someone you don’t know or an unfamiliar company – is probably a scam. A good rule is to always call your financial institution to verify. Spend. Spending hard earned money is something we all like to do. How you spend it is something you need to be careful about. Making a budget is a good way to divide your money to make sure you have enough for everything you need and want. Borrow. You’re ready for a BIG purchase—a tablet or phone? You won’t have the money for another month. Adults can apply for a credit card. This is borrowed money. After high school you will probably borrow money for college, buying a car or even the purchase of your first house. Following these five basic principles will guide and prepare you for a solid financial future.

RAVE ABOUT A LITTLE: MERRY CHRISTMAS CHRISTIAN! While visiting Washington Junior High School, Match Coach, Emily Danger asked one of her Littles what he wanted for Christmas this year. Christian responded with, “a pair of Nike tennis shoes.” Emily asked Christian what size he wore and if there was anything else on his Christmas list. Emily went to Jaime Keller, since she was in charge of all gifts to be dispensed for Christmas. The day came for presents to be delivered to the schools and Jaime had one present for Washington Junior High School, with Christian’s name written on the tag. Jaime had received a last minute donation from DMW Design that were in fact a pair of brand new Nike tennis shoes. Emily brought the present into Christian’s school to surprise him right before Christmas break. Christian was so surprised and excited to see his new shoes! Emily recently visited Christian to see him wearing his new Nike tennis shoes proudly.
DEAR MATCH COACH: MAINTAINING CONSISTENT CONTACT Dear Match Coach, Why did I get a “no contact” letter? Everything is fine in my match; why do I get calls every month? Dear Big, Without knowing the specifics of your match I cannot say for sure why you have received a no contact letter. I can say that to be in Big Brothers Big Sisters you, your Little and their parent/guardian need to maintain consistent contact with the agency. We call you every month to catch up, talk about what you and your Little are doing together, but also to talk about issues in your match and help you with ideas for match activities. Every month we call and you are required to call us back within ten days of that first call. Don’t worry, we will keep calling, but please call us back. Sincerely, Your Match Coach
