RAVE ABOUT YOUR LITTLE! Reid Johnson and Masen Masen and Reid Johnson are matched in the school-based program at Wilson Elementary. During the last match support contact, Masen’s match coach had a chance to speak to his mother, Tammy. As she began to speak, the Match Coach could tell that she was beginning to cry on the other end of the phone. She told the Match Coach that Masen’s father had passed away four years ago. She expressed her gratitude for the BBBS program and explained how much of a difference Reid has made in her son’s life. She was beyond grateful. Masen has made great improvements since being matched with Reid, including socially, behaviorally, and academically. Masen has always been very outgoing and has a lot of friends, but the Match Coach feels that he has become more confident in his own abilities. The Match Coach can tell that Masen has a great connection with Reid. When the Match Coach told Reid what Masen’s mother had said he replied, ”I can't tell you how happy I am that I joined the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Masen is an excellent young man who's going to turn into an equally excellent adult.”

DEAR MATCH COACH: “FRIENDING” ON SOCIAL MEDIA Dear Match Coach, My Little recently asked me to be their friend on Facebook. Can/Should I accept the request? What is Big Brothers Big Sisters policy? Volunteer, Social networking is indeed a fantastic tool for keeping in touch with loved ones, friends and family. Throughout the years, as Facebook has grown more popular, BBBS has become very adamant about protecting the privacy of our Littles. Big Brothers Big Sisters discourages the “Facebook Friendship” of Bigs and Littles because “friending” your Little may cause them to be susceptible to even more privacy invasion. Not to mention, as a Big, your personal life, which you may like to keep private, could then be exposed to your Little and/or their families. When talking with your Little about why you may not have accepted their “friend request”, you can bring up the importance of protecting their privacy when they are using their own Facebook or other social media sites. As their mentor you can explain the importance of privacy controls, using smart judgment about what they choose to post, behaving appropriately and understanding that anything put online can potentially be misused. Below is a list of a few conversation topics found in a great article “ Facebook for Parents” on Common Sense Media. http:// www.commonsensemedia.org/advice-for-parents/facebook-parents -Talk to your teens about controlling their information. Encourage them to be selective about what they share by customizing the recipients of their posts. Activities on Facebook, including the applications teens use and games they play, can be viewed by others. -Use strict privacy settings. Review all of the options on your privacy settings page. Facebook's default settings tend to keep information public until a user makes it private (although Facebook is a little stricter with
minors' accounts). "Friends Only" is a good choice for most items, but you can be even more selective. -Don't post your location. Facebook lets users post their location on every post. Teens shouldn't do this for safety and privacy reasons. -Set rules about what's appropriate to post. No sexy photos, no drinking photos, no photos of them doing something that could hurt them in the future. Remind them that once they post something, it's out of their hands. -If in doubt, take it out. Use the "Remove Post" button to take down risky posts. -Encourage teens to self-reflect before they self-reveal. Teens are very much in the moment and are likely to post something they didn't really mean. Work with them on curbing that impulse. Teach them to ask themselves why they're posting something, who will be able to read it, and whether it could be misunderstood or used against them later.
GET TO KNOW: SARAH WALKER AT BBBS-MV Name: Sarah Walker Position: Senior Director of Enrollment & Community Partnerships How long have you been working for BBBS? Since September, 2010. What is your favorite memory during the time you have been with BBBS? Working in Enrollment and Matching, I am excited every time I see a match that I’ve made attend a match activity. I appreciate hearing updates from the children and seeing how proud our Bigs are of our Littles. What do you like to do when you are not working? I love to be outdoors, but only when it’s warm and sunny. I enjoy camping, digging in the dirt, and generally playing outside. I also spend a lot of my time outside of work with my children, ages 10, 11, 13, and 14, who fill up my schedule with their school and extracurricular activities. They keep me busy and have amazing personalities!
What advice would you give a child who is in our program? Try new things. As much as you can. And, if you think you don’t like an activity, try it a few more times just to be sure. You never know what might turn into a life-long passion!

HELLO FROM ICE-COLD DOWNTOWN MACOMB! After the long and well-deserved Christmas/New Year’s break, we’re back in action. Lots of interviews, some new matches, a special gift, and so many more good people in the pipeline. The program is strong in McDonough County, and it’s the magnificent volunteers that are driving
it. The community is embracing BBBS and our mission, and people are excited to see what’s next. Everyone connected to the program in McDonough County should be very proud of themselves!
SCHOOLS: At Bushnell-Prairie City Elementary, we have 7 volunteers ready to be matched! The school is recruiting the children for us, and we’ll kick it off very soon. Bringing BBBS to Bushnell has been a long time coming, but we have finally put the pieces in place. NEW COMMUNITY-BASED MATCH IN MACOMB! At Lincoln, 3 child interviews were conducted, and 2 NEW MATCHES were made!
At Edison, 1 NEW MATCH was made!
BBBS Board We had our monthly Board meeting on Monday 13 January at City Hall in Macomb. BBBS staff gave a status report regarding new matches, RTBM volunteers and children, those who are still in the process, and further recruiting. We spent the majority of our time discussing the spring 2014 fund-raising event. With the help of Ryan Laverdiere and the American Legion, BBBS will host its second annual Music Trivia event! Teams will match wits in the ultimate music trivia quiz, while raising money for our program. The event will take place Saturday 28 June 2014 at 7PM. More info to come.
We want to congratulate the first NEW community -based match of the 2013-14 school year! Big Brother Darren waited a long time for the perfect Little Brother, and his patience paid off. Little Brother Erskin is a brilliant and multi-talented young man, and he’s excited to be matched with such a positive and enthusiastic mentor.
LOOK AT THIS! Thanks to the generosity of long-time Board member Tim Lipp, Little Sister Alecia has a brand new bike. Board chairperson Dan Yoder and Big Sister Kabrina were there to share in the moment! 7 more volunteer interviews were conducted. Great people just keep coming in. BBBS staff held a recruitment meeting with 150 Law Enforcement students at WIU. 12 good people applied! Kudos to LEJA for caring about the community. At the BBBS Christmas party, back in early December, we made “anonymous” Christmas cards to be delivered to the folks at Fitch Manor Retirement Community. With some help from the Wee Care Daycare, Team BBBS produced 72. BBBS staff delivered those cards to the friendly residents, and received many a heartfelt “thank-you.” BIG THANKS to Big Sister Janet and Little Sister Brianna for bringing lunch to the BBBS office on 17 January. We had a nice little picnic in the “East Wing.” We’re going to keep bringing people together; that’s what we do. More new matches are on the way. SEARCHING FOR NEW MATCH ACTIVITY IDEAS IN WHITESIDE We are looking for some ideas from Whiteside County matches regarding potential match activities to have in this area. It is the hope that we can resume planning regularly scheduled activities for our matches to enjoy but I am looking for some fresh ideas from those who will be enjoying them. I am looking for both indoor and outdoor ideas. Low cost activities that can be enjoyed by kids ages 6-15. I’ve had some of the best ideas sent to me by some Bigs and I hope that soon we can compile a great list to choose from. Email Loni at : lmckinney@mail.bbbs-mv.org

ASK YOUR MATCH COACH ABOUT HAVlife! There are many exciting opportunities for children to get involved within the Quad Cities. Sports, music, or the arts. Unfortunately, those activities sometimes just cost too much, and the child ends up disappointed and with lost potential. BBBS has partnered with the HAVlife Foundation to ensure that any Little who wants to be involved in an extra-curricular activity has the ability to do so. The HAVlife Foundation exists to help bridge the financial gap and eliminate “lost potential” in students by providing funds for various activities in athletics, music and arts. Need ideas? BBBS maintains a list of available activities that might interest your Little. Contact your Match Coach to learn more.

MONEY-WISE KIDS: DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DECISIONS By IHMVCU Staff You make many decisions every day. You make decisions about what to wear, what to eat, what you’ll be doing after school. How about what to spend your allowance or your birthday money on? Many of us make these decisions with very quickly. When making decisions about money, that isn’t always the best choice.
2. Borrow money from your parents or friends Positive-You’ll get the shoes right away and the shoes you wanted Negative- You won’t feel that sense of accomplishment and the person you ask to borrow money from might say “no.” 3. Buy a different pair of shoes Positive- You’ll have a new pair of shoes Negative- They won’t be the shoes you wanted.
What if you only have $50 from your birthday and there are Step 4: Define what’s important to you three big things you want to buy? The total cost is way more than Getting the pair of shoes you really want, getting the shoes right what you have. How do you decide what to buy? away or not having to borrow money. Here are some steps to guide you to making the right decision:
Step 5: Make the decision Now it’s time to make the decision. No one can do this for you. This part is up to you. What would you do in this situation?
Step 1: Identify the problem What are you trying to accomplish? Do you need more money to buy the thing you want or need? Are you trying to figure out how much you should save or how much you want to spend? Step 2: Come up with a list of possible solutions Let’s say the problem you are trying to solve is not having enough money to buy a specific pair of shoes. Some possible solutions might be: 1. Save your money till you have enough 2. Borrow money from your parents or friends 3. Buy a different pair of shoes Step 3: Come up with positive and negative consequences of each solution 1. Save your money till you have enough Positive- You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and you’ll get the shoes you want. Negative- You may have to wait a while to get the shoes
