JANUARY IS NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH!
For the past 15 years, January has been recognized as National Mentoring Month, a time to recognize those who have mentored us, raise awareness of the importance of mentors in children’s lives, and to thank the many individuals who have served as mentors in programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters. So, first and foremost, from the staff and AmeriCorps members of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley, we thank YOU for spending countless hours with your Littles-encouraging them, sharing new experiences with them, and helping them to reach their full potential. You are truly appreciated! This January marks the second year of MENTOR’s public awareness and recruitment campaign, In Real Life. In Real Life focuses on the real life benefits of mentoring to young people, as well as real life benefits to mentors themselves. Feeding off the viral video where President Obama is teaching Steph Curry how to shoot a basketball in this comedic mentoring video, MENTOR is creating a new video series promoting mentoring. Keep an eye on BBBSMV’s social media sites throughout January to see links to these new mentoring specific videos as they are released! January 12, 2017, is I Am A Mentor Day, a day for volunteer mentors to celebrate their role and reflect on the ways mentees have enhanced their world. If you’ve already joined our Bigs only Facebook page (Bigs 4-1-1), share your In Real Life mentoring pictures, videos, and stories with us. Contact Jaime Keller
INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
(jkeller@bbbs-mv.org) about joining this group, if you aren’t yet a member. If you don’t participate in social media, share your story with your friends, family, and co-workers. Take this day to brag on yourself and how your Little has helped you grow. January 19, 2017, is #ThankYourMentor Day, a day for all who have real life mentoring experiences to thank those who helped them on their path to adulthood and beyond. Take time to reach out to those who have mentored you and help them know how much the time and energy spent with you in the past has helped shape your future. Also, watch for a fun video of our BBBS matches expressing their thanks and appreciation on our social media sites! National Mentoring Month is also a time for us to actively look for more volunteer Big Brothers or Big Sisters. We have a goal of creating 350 NEW mentoring relationships within our BBBSMV organization by June 30, 2017. We cannot reach this goal without help from our active Bigs! Talk to someone you know who might be a good mentor and encourage them to find out more about BBBS programs in January and support our RecruitOne campaign (contact Bre Sykes at bsykes@bbbs-mv.org if you have questions about RecruitOne). If your workplace might be open to sharing about BBBS programs with employees, contact Beth Clark at bclark@bbbs-mv.org to talk more about how a Lunch and Learn can recruit volunteers within businesses.

RAVE ABOUT YOUR LITTLE: IREONA "I just felt like maybe if I put someone else down my feelings would be achieved and I wouldn't be hurting anymore but I realized that that's not the right idea," says Ireona. After hearing what they had to say, Kierian accepted her apology, and now the school is awarding both kids the Difference Maker Award. The award is normally given to staff members of the Rock Island/ Milan School District, for going above and beyond to make their school a better place, but this year the district decided to give the award to the kids for moving past their differences and gaining a new friendship. ROCK ISLAND, Illinois-- For students Ireona and Kierian just being next to each other use to be a real challenge. The two 6th graders at Denkmann Elementary School did not get along, because Ireona bullied Kierian, but after constantly teasing him, Ireona had a wake up call. So she wrote Kierian an apology letter and read it to their class and explained that she had been bulled herself.
"When she read the note to me, I was thinking she is really sincere and she's really, really sorry for what's she's done," says Kierian.

LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS & COMPANIES GIVE BIG TO LITTLES! The generosity of this community is amazing. One only needs to ask and most people will enthusiastically jump at the chance to help out these children and families. These companies took up the challenge to shop for, wrap and deliver presents to schools, and to our BBBS offices to share with families. Thank you so much for your generosity this holiday season.
