100 DAYS / 100 BIGS: BIGS! WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We have over 150 Littles waiting to be matched in the CommunityBased program. 75% of them are boys. The Community-Based program is the “core program” we offer to children in our community who are facing some kind of adversity. As a Big Brother or Big Sister you know how important your friendship is to your Little. Often these children are coping with being part of a low-income family. They may have only one parent or guardian, and in many cases it is a female head of household. The involvement of a Big in the child’s life helps to expose the child to the possibilities in life. Many times the Big will take them out in the community to show them places like museums, parks, bike trails, or historical places. Sometimes they go to sporting events, movies or grab a bite to eat. Still, other Bigs bring them home and help them learn how to cook, work on home projects or how to fix something. Many of our Community-Based Bigs bring their Middle or High School Little to Career Navigator Tours of companies so they can begin to see what types of jobs or careers are out there and what it takes with regard to training or education to do that job or follow that career-path. For Littles of all ages BBBS holds a few Match Activities each month which are fun ways to involve Littles in games, community volunteering, educational events and more. Once you encourage someone to become a Big, there is no lack for things to do with them! A WORD FROM OUR BIGS: Jeff Belvel has been matched with Elijah for 5 1/2 years. Elijah is now 16. Here’s what Jeff told us about their Match and about being a Big Brother. “Being a Big takes time; but it is time well spent. I have learned that mentoring is important no matter how busy I think I am. I have enjoyed getting to know Elijah over the years and I believe he enjoys our time together as well. I am thankful that Elijah looks forward to our outings and that I can be his mentor and friend. Elijah has grown quite a lot since we were first matched. He is more confident around others and outspoken about his beliefs in a positive way. He is also willing to try new things more than in the past.”
INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
John Howes has been matched with his Little, Johnathon for 4 years. Johnathon is now 16 as well. “Part of my job as Johnathon’s Big Brother is to share my own self-confidence with him, to reinforce and increase his selfesteem, but what continually amazes me is the extent he manages to do exactly the same for me! When he says, “You’re the greatest!” and “you make me happy” he makes me feel needed and perhaps more importantly makes me feel wanted. I am not just any over-the-hill adult to him. I am his friend. He has even managed to charm my wife, Rita!” Please help us out! The ten Bigs who recruit the most new volunteers by August 1, will receive a $250 gift card to spend on their Little for “back to school” or something else they really need. If you recruit even one adult during 100 Days / 100 Bigs you will be put in a drawing to receive a two night stay in Pewaukee, WI (near Miller Park in Milwaukee) along with $100 worth of dining gift certificates at their Thunder Bay Grill (donated by Heart of America) and passes to visit the Harley Museum in Milwaukee (remember, no out of town, overnights with your Little, but you and your spouse or friend could enjoy this get-away if you win!). To find out more about recruiting a volunteer go to www.bbbsmv.org and click on 100 Days / 100 Bigs. All the information you need to recruit a friend, co-worker, church member of family member is right there. If you have questions you can contact Sarah Walker at swalker@bbbs-mv.org or Heather Kaminsen at hkaminsen@bbbs-mv.org or call 563-323-8006 and ask for either of them. PRESENTED BY:

DEAR MATCH COACH: MATCH ACTIVITY RSVPs Dear Match Coach,
Another important thing to know about our activities is that we sometimes have people or companies that are sponsors. They donate their time, food, money, and facility for our use so it’s important to support them and attend those activities. We understand that things come up and it’s difficult to plan activities far in advance with Littles. If that happens please make sure, even if it’s the day of, to contact your match coach or email Jaime Keller at jkeller@bbbs-mv.org, to be taken off the RSVP list.
I would like to attend some upcoming activities, but if something comes up and our match is not able to attend anymore what should I do? At least once a month a match activity is held for our matches. A lot of planning and time are put into match activities, so it’s important for BBBS to have an accurate RSVP number. If a match doesn’t come to an activity, that gives away the opportunity for another match to attend, especially if an activity has limited spots. It also prevents BBBS staff from enjoying the activities with matches, because Thanks for your help! we wait to make sure you all make it and we don’t forget anyone.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BBBS H.S. GRADUATES! The staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters is proud to recognize seven Littles who graduated high school this year. All of these students have been a joy to have in the program, and we are confident that they will work hard and be successful wherever they go. A big THANKS to the Bigs who supported these students and stood by them through the high school years. When you choose to be a Big, you commit to making a difference in the life of a child! Thank you!

SUPPORT BBBS USING BIRDIES FOR CHARITY! DEADLINE JULY 10TH A great way to support BBBS is by making a donation to us through Birdies for Charity. It’s simple! All you need to do is go to the Big Brothers Big Sisters website at www.bbbsmv.org and click on DONATE. It will take you to the page below, then click on Birdies for Charity and download the form.
All pledges must be made on the official Birdies Pledge Card and must be received at the tournament office by July 10, 2015. After the tournament you will be mailed a notice of your pledge amount due. You can also enter the Birdies for Charity contest by guessing the number of birdies that will actually be made by the Tour Pros during the tournament. A grand prize of a two year lease on a 2015 Lexus NX will be given to one person who guesses the correct number. In case of ties, winners will be randomly selected. Other contest prizes include: John Deere riding lawn mower, John Deere Classic tee marker signed by the 2015 John Deere Classic champion, $500 credit to be used at any local John Deere dealership, and over 100 other great prizes! Whenever someone pledges to support BBBS through Birdies for charity, the organization receives the contribution, plus 5-10% from the BIRDIES SCORED IN PREVIOUS YEARS: 1,914 (in 2009) 2,010 (in 2010) 2,160 (in 2011) Birdies for Charity Fund match. So, the non-profit 2,113 (in 2013) 2,142 (in 2013) 2,040 (in 2014) will be the recipient of even more than what you donated!
BBBSMV 416
The form already contains the BBBSMV name and “bird number” on it. Once you make a one-time flat donation or enter an amount for every birdie made, then you mail your form into Birdies for Charity at 15623 Coaltown Rd., East Moline, IL 61244.
GET TO KNOW BBBS STAFF: KATELYN KONVICKA Name: Katelyn Konvicka Position: Customer Relations Specialist (More specifically I contact people who want more information about becoming a Big to hopefully enroll them in our program) How long have you been working for BBBS? Since January, so about 5 months now. What do you most enjoy about being with BBBS? I love my coworkers and work environment! But more than that I enjoy being involved in a program that helps kids. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I like hanging out with my friends and family, cooking, and reading. What advice would you give a child who is in our program? As much as you might want to, don’t rush growing up. Enjoy being young! One day you will have to be grown up paying bills and working all day, so love the time you have now being a kid.

COACHES CORNER JULY, 2015
BIG SUMMER AT THE SOUTHERN MENTORING CENTER Warren and McDonough Counties never cease to amaze us! This summer many of our kids needed something to do and the community stepped up. Many BBBS and non-BBBS kids needed healthy lunches and the community provided. Friday field trips? COVERED. Need a lunch for Saturday and Sunday? ASK AND YE SHALL RECEIVE. Looking for a Big Brother or Big Sister? WE CAN TAKE CARE OF THAT TOO. Looking for talented, young people interested in social service? Allow BBBS to introduce the Summer 2015 interns. WOW, so much good news- the Coaches Corner could hardly keep up. Community Support for BBBS We have really special news from Macomb this summer! The YMCA of McDonough County and the Youth Assistance Program have teamed up to send 9 of our Littles to 10 weeks of summer camp!!! No photos yet, but the kids have told us that this is one of the best summers of their Little lives. AND- HAVLife is funding the weekly field trips for our 9 Littles. ALSO- The Macomb community has come together to provide weekend lunches for our kids. There are a number of organizations participating and we have photos (the first three weeks of June, so far) here: NEW MATCHES In June we had three new community based matches! Big Brother Chase and Little Brother Michael are two peas in a pod. Chase and Michael are both sport fanatics and excited to have each Courtney (L) Desiree (R) other to share all their outdoor activities with while building a strong and positive relationship - the sky’s the limit for these two! Big Sister DeSiree and Little Sister Courtney were also matched, at the introduction BBBS couldn’t get a word in because they had so much to say to each other. Little Sister Aaron (L), Patrick (R) Courtney is a whipper-snapper and Big Sister DeSiree is a recreational runner, which will help her keep up with Courtney’s energy! Big Brother Patrick and Little Brother Aaron are an all-star match. At the introduction it took about 15 minutes for them to become old friends. CONGRATULATIONS to all our new matches!
Kacie had received a pile of certificates from the school itself (academic performance, music, physical fitness...we lost count). Big Sister Pat had to leave before we could get a photo with her, but she was very proud of Kacie's accomplishment. A special day for a special match. Kacie One of our longest-standing matches also has some great news to share with us: Little Sister Marissa received two honor roll awards, and a Choir certificate to go with her 8th grade promotion! BBBS is proud of both of these Little Sisters and their academic Marissa achievements. We would also like to congratulate any other Littles who had big achievements during the 2014-2015 academic school year! HAVLife WINNER Big Brother Bryce applied for the HAVLife grant on behalf of Little Brother Seth for the 2015 Billy Wright Boy’s Basketball Camp at WIU and WON! Little Brother Seth had a great time and the camp staff talked about how much they liked getting to know him. Big Sisters in the Office We have two great interns this summer- Sarah Latimer from the Youth Development major and Bianca Diaz from the Law Enforcement major. What makes them even more special is that they’ve both been Sarah (L), Bianca (R) spectacular Big Sisters in our program for about a year and a half. They’ve been working diligently with us to help our program and we thoroughly appreciate having their energy and interest in serving the community and its children.
MUSIC TRIVIA This issue of Coaches Corner was published before our event. By the time you read this we will have held our third annual Music Trivia fundraiser on 27 June. Macomb’s American Legion was kind enough to host our event once again. A number of local businesses Lane Family Band and organizations donated prizes, two out of town pro-sport teams donated tickets and Fun ACADEMIC AWARDS FOR LITTLE SISTERS City donated gift cards. This year, spinning the Big Sister Pat nominated Little Sister Kacie for a Community platters will be DJ Ellemenopee! AND the really Service award, and it was presented to her at Bushnell Elementary on big news is The Lane Family Band will play live the last day of school. John Meixner and Bill Jacobs of the for us. We changed the format to make it a DJ Ellemenopee McDonough County Quality of Life Committee presented Kacie with little more challenging and exciting and we this very exclusive (only 2 given out this year) and very prestigious expect a great turn out this year. Keep your eye award for Kacie's service to her school. We thought that was great, out for a full report and photos in the 1 August Coaches Corner. but the awards just kept coming. By the end of the presentations

Introduce a friend to mentoring. As a Big you know there is no feeling quite like knowing that you are making a positive impact on a child’s life. For as little as 2 hours a month in our School-Based program your friend or co-worker can change the life of a Little for the better, forever.
