SUMMER SAFETY—IT’S A BIG DEAL!

Summertime should be a fun and exciting time for you and your Little. These warm school-free months are the ideal time for picnics, bike rides, swimming pool fun, and adventures in the park. In addition to rising temperatures and increased opportunities for fun, summer is also associated with rising rates of injury amongst children.

Take some time to have a conversation about safety with your Little to ensure that the two of you are both safety conscious and ready to enjoy a safe and exciting summer together!

At the pool, make sure there are separate changing areas where you and your Little can change in and out of your bathing suits.

Wear sunscreen SPF 30 or higher, reapply every 2 hours.

Ask your Little if it’s OK for you to help them apply sunscreen on their back.

  

Keep their Epipen or inhaler handy if there is any chance your Little may need to use it.

Many people bring their dogs out to enjoy the summer weather too. Make sure your Little knows not to approach a strange dog without consulting the owner first.

Bicycle Safety Tips: 

Keep you and your Little safe with these tips: 

Always wear a helmet. Check that it fits properly before leaving for a ride.  Make sure your bikes have air in the tires and no obvious mechanical issues before heading out for a ride. Double check that the breaks are adequate.  Stay off the roads. Stick to designated bike paths and multi-use trails.

Know the Rules of the Trail!

Protect your eyes with sunglasses and/or a hat.

 Keep to the right and pass on the left (just like a road).

Bumps, bruises, and boo-boos happen; keep a basic first aid kit in your car Sometimes when kids are having fun, they forget to take time to cool off and drink water. Take breaks from your activities to ensure that your Little stays properly hydrated.

Pack bug repellant and be mindful of areas that may have a high tick population.

Know your Little’s allergies and make sure he/she has taken any regular medications used to control allergy symptoms.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

         

 Call out to runners, walkers, and other bikers before you pass them. A simple “On your left!” is usually sufficient. 

Stop at all road crossings and yield to all vehicles.

Use these hand signals when turning or stopping.

SUPPORT BBBS USING BIRDIES FOR CHARITY! DEADLINE JULY 10TH A great way to support BBBS and its youth mentoring programs is by making a donation to BBBS through Birdies for Charity. It’s simple! All you need to do is go to the Big Brothers Big Sisters website at www.bbbsmv.org and click on DONATE. It will take you to the page below, then

click on Birdies for Charity and download the form. The form already contains the BBBSMV name and “bird number” on it. Once you make a one-time flat donation or enter an amount for every birdie made, then you mail your form into Birdies for Charity at 15623 Coaltown Rd., East Moline, IL 61244.

All pledges must be made on the official Birdies Pledge Card and must be received at the tournament office by July 10, 2015. After the tournament you will be mailed a notice of your pledge amount due. You can also enter the Birdies for Charity contest by guessing the number of birdies that will actually be made by the Tour Pros during the tournament, Wednesday through Sunday. A grand prize of a two year lease on a 2015 Lexus NX will be given to one person who guesses the correct number. In case of ties, winners will be randomly selected. Other contest prizes include: John Deere riding lawn mower, John Deere Classic tee marker signed by the 2015 John Deere Classic champion, $500 credit to be used at any local John Deere dealership, and over 100 other great prizes! Whenever someone pledges to support BBBS through Birdies for charity, the organization BIRDIES SCORED IN PREVIOUS YEARS: 1,914 (in 2009) 2,010 (in 2010) 2,160 (in 2011) receives the contribution, plus 5-10% from the 2,113 (in 2013) 2,142 (in 2013) 2,040 (in 2014) Birdies for Charity Fund match. So, the non-profit will be the recipient of even more than what you donated!

THE NEWS FROM MACOMB: PLANT SALE HUGE SUCCESS!

Many thanks to all of our supporters! We took our favorite photos from the 2015 Plant Sale and made this picture-postcard. Many thanks to everyone who helped: our fantastic Board, a couple of the Bigs, some from the Macomb Morning Rotary Club, The Macomb Bombshells, the U of Illinois Master Gardeners, and Kayla and Sarah from the Davenport office. And a hearty thank-you to everyone who bought plants! Most importantly, we need to thank our hosts STC Investments. Year in and year out STC donates the site, the water, and machine and operator time to get the plants off the delivery truck. We couldn't do it without STC.

Thanks!

MONEY-WISE KIDS: SAVE OR INVEST? By IHMVCU Staff You have a couple of different options when it comes to saving your money. How do you know which one is right for you?

Safety – how risky is it? Liquidity – can you easily get to your money? Return on Investment – what’s the earning potential? Here are some different ways to invest your money:

Saving Saving products – like savings and checking accounts – are typically the safest way to save money, and allow access any time. These products are insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). What does that mean to you? It means your money is protected by the United States government. There is a tradeoff when it comes to security and availability – and that’s the earning potential. Most savings and checking accounts have a very low interest rate. Another saving product is a Certificate of Deposit, or a CD. This is also protected by the NCUA and FDIC. What makes these products different is the access. CDs can pay higher interested rates, but they usually “hold” your money for a specific length of time (also known as term). The pros to having a CD including fixed interest rate for the life of the term and you earn compound interest. A con to having a CD is not being able to access your money when you want. If you withdraw your money before the term is up, you will pay a penalty fee. Investing There are many ways to invest your money. Before you invest, think about these factors:

Mutual Funds. A mutual fund uses cash from a pool of savers to buy a wide range of securities, like stocks, bonds, and real estate. It’s a good way to diversify your investments because you own small units of each of the fund's investments. The fund is managed by professionals and permits small amounts of money to be invested. Stocks. Stocks are ownership, or equity interest in a corporation. When you own stock, it’s known as a share. With stocks, there's no protection against losses. There’s no compound interest. The price can rise like a rocket, drop like a stone or grow steadily. You can sell your stocks at any time. There’s risk involved with mutual funds and stocks because they are not insured. If the price drops, you lose money. When you sell, you’re selling them for what they are worth at that moment. If it’s more than you paid for them, you’ll earn money. There are a lot of ways to save and make your money grow! Just remember to research any investment to determine the Safety, Liquidity and Return on your Investment before you commit.

Thanks to IHMVCU for their sponsorship of the BBBS Money-Wise Kids Program!

DEAR MATCH COACH: CONNECTING WITH MY LITTLE Dear Match Coach, My Little and I have been matched for a few months and I just don’t seem to be connecting with them. Is it me? If you feel that you and your Little are not connecting it could be due to a few reasons. One being that your Little is shy or not used to interacting with adults besides their parents or teachers, or the child could have been let down by someone previously and they don’t want it to happen again. Family circumstances can also play a role in connecting, especially if it’s difficult to get together on a regular basis. Another reason could be that your expectations are higher than what the reality of the situation is, because some results won’t happen in the first stage of a relationship, but will eventually occur as the

match goes on. Ways that you can try to establish having a stronger connection with your Little are by asking open ended questions about your Little’s interests and incorporating these interests into your activities. Each of you can also make a list of things you want to do and let your Little make the final decision, as long as it’s age appropriate and doable. Listen more than you talk, don’t just jump into giving advice. Be patient and persistent in setbacks. Tell your Little how much you care about them and let them know what their good qualities and strengths are. If you are still feeling that your connection isn’t as strong as you’d like it to be contact your Match Coach right away and talk to them about how you are feeling.

LUNCH AND LEARN ABOUT MENTORING! If you are a current or past Big Brother or Big Sister and work at a company in our region, you could be of great assistance to BBBS during 100 Days / 100 Bigs (or anytime during the year) by talking with your Human Resources Manager or branch manager and scheduling a Lunch and Learn at your workplace. A Lunch and Learn usually works like this: 1. Promote the Lunch and Learn in the workplace for two weeks prior to the meeting and have people sign up in advance for it. 2. Workplace provides a lunch—pizza, sandwiches, etc. 3. Allow 45 minutes for the meeting—a few minutes to eat and socialize, about 30 minutes for the Big Impact video, program explanation and Q and A. 4. We only ask for volunteer inquiries at this meeting. It’s difficult to have someone make a commitment after only hearing a few words about mentoring. We simply ask them to fill out an Inquiry form and one of our enrollment specialists will contact them.

Ask your HR Manager to schedule a volunteer recruitment Lunch and Learn! Contact Beth at 563-323-8006 or email: bclark@bbbs-mv.org.
