MONEY-WISE KIDS: BUDGETING FOR THE FUTURE By IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union Staff Carlos burst through the front door, a big smile on his face. He just received the call he’d been waiting for. He started his first job on Monday. Carlos thought about everything he could do with his money, including buying a car. He did some quick math. If he worked 25 hours a week at $8.50 an hour, he’d need to save every penny to afford a decent car. What about going out with his friends and new clothes? He also wanted to buy a phone. Would he have enough money to do everything? His stomach sank. How could he afford a car and everything else? Carlos needed a budget. Don’t forget—a budget isn’t about telling you what you can’t spend, it’s about deciding what’s important to you and using your money for that. Carlos knows what he wants. He wants a car, money to go out with friends, a new cell phone and clothes.
Remember, this is just one week. Imagine how much it can add up in a month or over the summer. By creating a budget, Carlos was able to see his expenses and where he needs to save more or take something off his list. He’s disappointed that he won’t have enough money for a car by the end of summer. The good thing about a budget—it’s not set in stone. Carlos knows he’ll have a phone, money for new clothes and money each week to go out with his friends. He’ll have to wait longer for his car, but knows it’s not out of his reach. The budget gave Carlos a clear picture, helping him map out how to spend his money so he doesn’t get lost along the way.
To get started, Carlos needs to estimate his take home pay, approximately $180 after taxes. Next, he needs to determine how much to put aside every week for each item on his list (both wants and needs). His weekly budget could look something like this: Car: $40 Phone: $30 Clothes: $20 Spending Cash: $60 Savings: $30

HEALTHY KIDS: STAYING SAFE OUTDOORS By UnityPoint Health—Trinity Staff Insect Bites Spending hot summer days outside will likely lead to an insect bite or two, especially if playing near heavily wooded areas or ponds. In these areas, you’re likely to find summer’s biggest foe: the mosquito. A child can help protect themselves by using insect repellent and wearing protective clothing, such as lightweight long-sleeved shirts, pants and closed-toe shoes. The majority of insect stings come from wasps, yellow jackets, hornets and bees. If a child is stung by one of these insects, look for these signs of allergic reaction: Pain ● Redness Large swelling outside the sting point ● Hives ● Itching If a child displays any of these symptoms, contact a pediatrician, primary care doctor or an urgent care clinic. Overheating It is normal for a child to be worn out after a long day playing in the sun, but know the signs of heat exhaustion. They include: Nausea and vomiting ● Headache Dizziness ● Fatigue Hot, dry skin ● Shortness of breath Decreased sweating If you notice any of these, find a cool, shaded area, possibly indoors in the air conditioning, to help them cool down. Give the child ice water to keep them hydrated or a sports drink to replenish fluids and needed sugars. Remove excess clothing and put a wet, cool cloth on their skin to bring their body temperature down. If the child continues to display symptoms of overheating, contact a pediatrician, primary care doctor or urgent care clinic as soon as possible. Sunburn A child’s skin is more sensitive to sunlight than your adult skin, so
protecting their skin from excessive sun exposure is essential. If a child spends long periods of time in the sun, dress them in protective clothing, such as a hat and sunglasses. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen. Apply 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every 30 to 60 minutes. Poison Ivy and Poison Oak If you believe you, a child or your clothes have come in contact with poison oak or ivy, wash the area thoroughly with soap and wash your clothes with regular detergent at the highest heat setting possible. While this may help cut down on pain and itching, you may need a topical or oral treatment to help the rash heal more quickly. Water Safety It is important to know proper water safety for a child. Use floaties or inner tubes for children too young to swim on their own. Visit pools with lifeguards and supervise young swimmers. Infants, toddlers and children who are not strong swimmers should have an adult supervisor within arm’s reach. Falls Bike riding, trampolines, skateboarding, scooters, playsets, climbing trees and hiking are all amazing outdoor activities for a child, but may lead to a fall. Prevent injuries by providing proper protective gear such as helmets, knee pads, and the right shoes. If a child does suffer a fall, know what to look for in case they suffer a head injury: Check for external head injuries such as minor cuts or bruises Internal head injuries may lead to unconsciousness, vomiting, or the child not walking or talking normally. Watch a child’s activity for 24 hours after a fall for any of the above symptoms. If the child is displaying any head injury warning signs, have the child’s condition assessed in an ER or urgent care clinic as soon as possible.

BRINGING COLOR TO THE COMMUNITY—WARREN & McDONOUGH COUNTIES The big news this month is our 15th annual Mother’s Day plant sale was a BIG success! Raising funds to support our kids is the goal, of course, and seeing our long time customers come out with smiles on their faces warms our heart. We love talking to our supporters, helping them to beautify their homes while strengthening our mentoring relationships. Everybody wins! MATCH ACTIVITIES This month we hosted two great programs for our Bigs and Littles. Number one was our first-ever all -girls activity. Girls Empowerment educated some of our Littles about self-confidence and bullying. Laura Leezer, BBBS board member and Vice President of Citizens Bank, hosted this fantastic program for our girls. They talked about what they liked about themselves and finding the beauty from within. Even some of the usually quieter Littles shared their thoughts with everyone. It was obvious that all of our kids left the room feeling more confident in themselves. We are so grateful to Citizens bank and Laura for hosting this program! For the second program we called in the Extreme Office Make-Over professionals. Our office was looking a little drab and the wall color was getting old, so we invited our Bigs and Littles in to redecorate with their own designs. Now we have beautiful names and handprints covering our walls in every corner of the office. We are so thankful to have wonderful artists in our community that are willing to remodel for us!
2016 Plant Sale
Another spectacular year for the BBBS Plant Sale! 2016 was the most successful plant sale ever! We raised a great amount of money to support our kids in Warren and McDonough Counties. We need to thank STC Investments and Scott Collins for being very gracious hosts (for 10+ years now). The U of I Extension Master Gardeners for their expert advice. Macomb Centennial Morning Rotary Club and our outstanding Board members for their many hours of labor. The Phillips 66 next door for letting us use their water, and every single customer for coming out to support the work we do for the kids in Warren and McDonough Counties. Team BBBS is stronger than ever! New Intern Our intern for the summer is Holly Stauffer. She recently graduated from Western Illinois University, having studied non profit management and event planning. Holly has been a Big Sister for over a year now and we are really excited to see what programs she comes up with for our matches. We are excited to welcome Holly!
