SUMMER SAFETY WITH YOUR LITTLE
Summer is right around the corner! With all the great things summer brings, it is important to practice safety in all aspects. Keep these tips in mind and talk to your Little about being safe this summer. Enjoy! Safety Tips: At the pool, make sure there are separate changing areas where you and your Little can change in and out of your swim suits. Be aware of your Little’s level of skill when it comes to swimming and be very vigilant. Wear sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher, water resistant and that has broad-spectrum protection. Wear lip balm with sunscreen in it as well. Reapply every two hours. Protect your eyes with sunglasses and a hat.
Always wear a helmet. Make sure it fits properly before leaving for a ride. Make sure your bikes have air in the tires and no obvious mechanical issues before heading out for a ride; double check that the brakes are adequate. Stay off the roads. Stick to designated bike paths and multi-use trails. Use insect repellant with DEET. ● At the park, make sure to check the playground equipment so that your Little does not get burned.
Keep a basic First Aid Kit in your car. Accidents happen! Stay hydrated! When kids are having fun they forget to take time to cool off and drink water. Take breaks from your activities to ensure that your Little stays properly hydrated. Pack bug repellant and be mindful of areas that may have a high tick population. Know your Little’s allergies and make sure he/she has taken any regular medications used to control allergy symptoms. Keep your Little’s EpiPen or inhaler handy if there is any chance your Little may need it. Many people bring their dogs out to enjoy the summer weather, too. Make sure your Little knows not to approach a strange dog without consulting the owner first.
INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
Know the Rules of the Trail: Keep to the right and pass on the left (just like a road). Call out to runners, walkers and other bikers before you pass them. A simple “On your left!” is usually sufficient. Stop at all road crossings and yield to all vehicles. Use hand signals when turning or stopping.
Remember: If you ever have a safety question or concern, contact your Match Coach or the BBBS office at 563-323-8006.

CONNECT BBBS TO YOUR EMPLOYER FOR A LUNCH & LEARN We are in constant need of volunteers, and right now we have over 200 children waiting to be matched into our program. One great way to get the word out about volunteering for BBBS is by scheduling a “Lunch and Learn” employee volunteer presentation with BBBS. We need your help. Put us in touch with your HR Director so we can come in and explain how a “Lunch & Learn” works. Basically, the company internally promotes the event a few weeks in advance, lets us know how many people will attend and the company provides pizza for the event! We do the rest! DEBT—THE GOOD, THE BAD AND...THE SMART WAY When we hear the word “debt” we tend to lean more toward the negative idea of debt. Simply stated, it means you’re responsible for paying or fulfilling a commitment.
the average consumer. Record keeping is the first step toward controlling your finances, and it applies to debt as well as investments.
There are two sides to debt—a positive and a negative.
2. Use Online Banking. Use online banking to pay your bills. We live in a computer age, so let technology help you out and do as much tracking online as possible. This allows you do your banking 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.
Positive debt At some point you’ll accumulate debt to buy a home (a mortgage) and fund your education. The reason it’s positive is because both of these expenses are investments. Negative debt Negative debt is any debt used to buy short-term things such as clothing, entertainment, electronics, etc. All of these items have a very short life span and typically have no value when we decide to sell them. Therefore, the money we spend on them is really money we can never get back. Most people end up financing purchases for TVs, stereos and computers, but it would be smarter to use cash. How do you avoid negative debt? The most effective ways to avoid any negative debt issues is learning to manage your finances. Here are four easy debt management tips: 1. Record keeping. Create a file (a document or spreadsheet) where you keep careful track of all debt you accumulate and a payoff plan. If you can do this, you’ll have more control over your debt than
3. Reduce the Number of Bills. Keep it simple — have as few bills as possible. A large part of debt management issues arise because of the sheer number of bills to pay. There’s the credit card company, the store cards, the utility bills, the car loan payment, the home loan payment, the student loan payment, and so on. For example: if you currently have three credit cards and they’re not used very much, use just one. Also, consider consolidating your existing debt. 4. Credit Card Debt. Start slowly with your first credit card. A smart money management rule is to avoid paying interest on your credit card charges by paying the balance in full each month. That way you'll enjoy the convenience a credit card can bring, but you can avoid unnecessary finance charges and debt that never seems to end.

HEALTHY KIDS: HEALTHY SNACKING FOR KIDS By Shannon Nelson, MS, ACSM-RCEP
Five Ingredient Granola
Snacking is an important part of a child’s day and it is important that we as adults make sure that kids are snacking on nutritious foods. According to Nancy Renkes from the River Bend Foodbank, in eastern Iowa and western Illinois alone, there are 46,070 children who are unable to have access to proper nutrition. Snacking is an easy way to introduce healthy foods into your Little’s diet. Nutritious snacking is important for brain and bone development along with supplying proper energy to fuel kid’s bodies. Following a few helpful tips will be sure to put your Little on the right track for healthy snacking. Set a good example: Keep junk food out of your activities. Your Little won’t want it if it’s not in the house and easy to access. Increase the menu options: Offer a variety of foods such as avocado, red or yellow peppers or pineapple and whole grains. Let Little choose what looks good to them and feel confident about their choices. Promote Independence: Keep a selection of ready-to-eat fruits/ veggies and other healthy snacks during Match Activities. This way when your Little is hungry they can easily grab a snack.
Ingredients 6 cup – oats, dry 1 /4 cup – brown sugar 1 /2 cup – coconut oil 1 /3 cup – honey 2 teaspoon – vanilla extract
Avoid connecting eating with screen time. This can help with mindless munching and reduce calories drastically.
Optional: cup – coconut flakes 1 /3 cup – sesame seeds 1 /4 cup – sunflower seeds 1 /2 cup – raisins, seedless 1 /2 cup – cranberries, dried 1 /2 cup pieces – mango 1 cup – walnuts, chopped Directions Mix rolled oats and brown sugar together. In a separate bowl, whisk together the oil, honey and vanilla. Pour over dry mixture and stir to coat thoroughly. Add in chopped nuts, and desired seeds at this point. Spread on a sprayed baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Stir frequently (every 5 minutes) to ensure even baking. It should be golden brown when it is done. Add dried fruit and coconut after it is finished baking. Let it cool on the baking sheet and then break up any large pieces. Store in an airtight container. Makes 8 cups. Can store for 3 weeks.

opportunity for the Bigs to expand the worldview of their Littles, and give them a better perspective on their own lives and the lives of people around the world. What an awesome way to wrap up the year!
Plant Sale 2017 Plant Sale 2017 was a huge success! In fact, the biggest sale we’ve ever had in Macomb! On the first day of the sale people were literally lined up waiting. We raised a solid amount for the program, every penny of which allows us to continue serving 75 kids in Warren Breanna & Brooke Kylan & Chris Justin & Aaron and McDonough Counties. Many thanks to everyone that came out to buy the most beautiful flowers in Macomb, and a BIG thanks to New Matches! everyone who told us to “keep the change” or deliberately BIG NEWS!!! Since the last issue we have made 3 new matches! Big overwrote their checks as a donation to the program, and special Brother Aaron is a Macomb Police Officer, and our first recruit thanks to everyone who helped to make it happen (Morning Rotary, through the “Bigs in Blue” program (Thanks to Chief Barker!). Big U of I Master Gardeners, Margaret Johnson, STC and Scott Collins, Brother Chris is a member of the WIU Men’s Basketball team, and his BBBS Board members, Mirissa, Regional Media, Susan and Marissa, mother worked for BBBS-Sacramento years ago. Big Sister Brooke is John Gage, Will Wetzel, Sarah and Kayla)! We’ll be back next year, studying Social Work at WIU, works at Wesley Daycare, and raises with an even bigger selection of wonderful flowers! cows. Little Brothers Justin and Kylan and Little Sister Breanna are 3 lucky kids, and are going to have a wonderful experience. These 3 great new volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and all arrived at BBBS for their own reason, but are here to make a difference. To all of them we say CONGRATULATIONS! WIU Student Leadership Award Big Sister Kirsten won the 2017 WIU Gordon Taylor Student Leadership Award! This is a huge, but well-deserved honor for Kirsten. She has been an outstanding Big Sister since November 2015, consistently doing her best to help her Little Sister. She also is the President of WIU Women's Rugby, a Sergeant in the US Army, and she recently raised more than $1,000 and shaved her head for St. Baldrick's. BBBS couldn't be any more proud to have Big Sister Kirsten be a part of the team!

Last Match Activity of the Year In May we hosted a very special activity: 9 different former Peace Corps Volunteers set up an International Bazaar for us. Each had a table to display crafts and cultural items from the country in which they served. Each shared stories and talked about their experiences. This was the first international and cultural event we have ever put on, and it was an unforgettable experience for both the kids and the adults. DEAR MATCH COACH: TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL My Little is going into middle school next year! How does this transition affect my match within Big Brothers Big Sisters?
Welcome to COMPASS! In the COMPASS program, we turn our attention to helping prepare Littles for life after high school. A couple of times a month, we host Career Navigators tours. During these tours, we visit local businesses to get a behind the scenes look at careers across the board. We have visited Athletico to talk about careers in physical therapy and sports medicine, the Davenport Police Department, the Rock Island Arsenal, and many more! Matches are invited to explore their career interests or educational goals with Career Cruising. Career Cruising is an online tool that shows Littles how to create a personalized plan for
their post-high school dreams. Matches also have the opportunity to learn success skills through workshops like Job Readiness and Speak With Confidence. Of course, we still want you to have fun! Keeping up the relationship building activities- riding bikes, visiting museums, or hanging out- is just as important as it has always been. While you’ll get a new Match Coach after the transition to middle school, our middle/ high school team is just as eager as the elementary team to help make your match the best it can be. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please reach out. Keep watching Coaches Corner for more thoughts on how to prepare your Little for the middle school years!
