“WONDER” RAISES ISSUE OF BULLYING
The movie comes out November 17, 2017.
This is a great opportunity to have a meaningful discussion with your Little about bullying. Ask another match to join you and see the movie together! Every minute of every day, we make choices in how we treat those we encounter in life. We can choose to be kind or we can choose to be cruel. Wonder by R.J. Palacio poignantly shows readers of all ages how our own words and actions are capable of building up or breaking down the human spirit. Not all hurtful behavior is bullying. As with Jack and his little brother Jamie in this story, we’ve all had experiences when our words or actions have been unintentionally hurtful toward others. Bullying involves: an intent to harm, a power imbalance, and repeated acts or threats of aggressive behavior. Kids who bully say or do something intentionally hurtful to others and they keep doing it, with no sense of regret or remorse—even when targets of bullying show or express their hurt or tell the aggressors to stop.
No child is born a bully. Bullying is a learned behavior. Kids can learn it anywhere. We are all role models to others in some way in our lives. Bullying can be addressed with the help and support of a caring community. Addressing and preventing peer aggression requires a community effort. Bystanders – those who witness bullying—have more power than they think to stop it. Experts have found that some of the most helpful things bystanders can do to support targets of bullying area: Listen to the target of bullying and take his/her problem seriously. Include the target in their group, game or activity. Find an adult ally – someone who will protect the child who is being bullied. Kindness does matter. Rather than focusing on our differences – whether subtle or obvious—we need to instead focus on what we do have in common. Choose kindness. By Trudy Ludwig. Author of numerous books on bullying and a member of Random House Speakers Bureau.
Some forms of bullying often go below the radar. Intentional exclusion, gossiping, the silent treatment, teasing, and spreading of rumors are often dismissed as normal rites of passage, but research shows these forms of relational aggression are as harmful as physical bullying – with long-term negative effects.

A GREAT MONTH AT THE SOUTHERN MENTORING CENTER We’re doing great things in Warren and McDonough Counties, and the program is strong. This month we made some new matches, interviewed more than 10(!) potential new Bigs, and had some fantastic BBBS match activities. We also have BIG things coming up: we have created a Community Impact Award, which we will give out at our first awards dinner in Macomb, and everyone’s favorite annual BBBS activity/fundraiser Bowl For Kids’ Sake. Look for photos and a report on the awards dinner and Bowl For Kids’ Sake in December. The community is behind us, we have outstanding volunteers, and the kids are really benefitting from our efforts. We’re changing lives for the better, forever!
In mid-October we went to Wesley Village to paint pumpkins with the residents. In 2016 we made “anonymous” Christmas cards for all Wesley residents; they were so impressed they wanted to spend time with our matches. Everyone had a great time, and we’re looking forward to our next opportunity to interact with those folks.
Bowl For Kids’ Sake 2017 Bowl For Kids’ Sake is coming on In the last month we have made 3 new matches, Saturday 4 November and Saturday and we’re excited to introduce them. All 3 of 11 November 2017! Everything these great new volunteers are important and happens at Digger’s in Macomb, as popular members of the Macomb community, usual, and the lanes are filling up and we’re really happy to have them on our team. fast! To all 3 of these wonderful new matches we say CONGRATULATIONS!!! New Matches!

Match Activities We’ve had 2 great match activities since the last newsletter! In early October we went to see Western Illinois Volleyball. The Volleyball team has been a great friend to our program, and we love going out to support them. We all had a great time, but weren't able to get a group photo. We did manage to get one of Big Sister Audrey and her Little, Abbie and Big Sister Brooke and her Little, Breanna. Many thanks to Western Illinois Athletics for continuing to include BBBS in their family!
