TRANSITIONING FROM SCHOOL-BASED TO COMMUNITY-BASED At Big Brothers Big Sisters meaningful matches are made between our Bigs and Littles on a daily basis. Matches thrive from the relationship that both the Big and Little create from their time spent together. For some, this time is school-based, eating lunch together, playing games or just simply chit chatting during lunch and recess. For others, their relationship consists of venturing out into the community, doing activities like going to the library or out to dinner. Through either one of these relationships the Little is receiving a one-to-one relationship that will help that Little flourish in all aspects of their life.

Mary and Little Cyrus

So what happens when a match comes to the conclusion that their school-based relationship is no longer the ideal? As the connection between a Big and Little grows it is not uncommon for both to want more out of the match. Heidi and her Little Kyler fell upon this exact dilemma. “I enjoy my afternoon lunches with him because he makes me smile. It is very rewarding to see his face light up when I meet him for lunch. He even chooses to spend his recess with me! If I am having a bad day at work, he makes my day so much better. There is no better feeling than knowing that you have helped a child and made an impact on his life while he makes one on me!” explained Heidi. But with such a meaningful school-based relationship the match still desired more from their one-to -one connection. “We tried the school-based program for a while and it was a nice experience, but I wanted to spend more time with him,” described Heidi.

With the help of their Match Coach, Mary and Cyrus came to the conclusion that community-based would be the best choice for their growing relationship. The match is now able to partake in a variety of different activities both physical and educational. “Have a conversation with your Match Coach, with eyes open. If you are pondering it, you probably want it,” explained Mary, as a word of advice to Bigs thinking about making the shift from school to community based.

Heidi and Little Kyler

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

Devona and her Little Brianna got along perfectly during their time together. They would do each other’s hair and nails while talking about one another’s day. But once again the match desired more than what the two felt the school-based program could offer. Devona became eager to expose Brianna to activities outside of those done at lunch time. With three kids of her own, Devona wanted to show her Little what her family life was like. Once the match transitioned the pair went to track meets and baseball games. They also attended cooking classes and put on their own fashion shows.

Devona and Little Brianna

Mary and her Little Cyrus were brought to make the choice when Cyrus reached the sixth grade. With one simple question from Cyrus, “Are you going to come with me to middle school?” The match was prompted to make a choice. Cyrus’ transition to seventh grade made a huge impact on what the match finally chose to do. With concerns that the lunch hour would no longer consist of recess, the match was afraid their time would be limited, and they would be unable to      

participate in their usual lunch time activities. There was also the concern that having a lunch buddy in middle school might not be the coolest.

  MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS  FAMILIES IN NEED OF ASSISTANCE? 

“Brianna became a part of the family. We all loved seeing her,” revealed Devona. “We wanted to make sure the match was good, make sure we were both comfortable. Start out with lunch, if you have the feeling of more just go for it,” explained Devona.

At BBBS no two matches are similar. And though your match with your Little may not be like that of Heidi and Kyler or Mary and Cyrus, you and your Little will know what is best for the both of you. If you or your Little are considering making the transition from school to community based, reach out to your Match Coach and see what might work best.

FROM THE BBBS FAMILY TO YOURS! HAPPY THANKSGIVING

The holidays are just around the corner. Many organizations and families are planning special projects during the holidays to help those less fortunate. BBBS can help! Because of the unique program model, BBBS knows specific children and families struggling in our community. We have worked with large and small groups to coordinate just the right project to meet the needs of the organization and the intended families. Each November we identify families and compile a list of basic and important needs specific to that family. Groups then divide the list up by specific family member or item. We have also coordinated delivery of the items. We have included the group in the delivery, engaged the little’s Big in the delivery, or picked up the items at your location and provided a brief overview of our organization and the family the gifts are going to support. If you are part of a group that participates in a holiday gift project, please feel free to call us for more information. The main contact for this project is:

NOVEMBER CRAFT ACTIVITY: THANKSGIVING SOCK TURKEY Craft: Thanksgiving sock Turkey Autumn has arrived. With the changing of the leaves and the air becoming chilly the season of thanks is upon us. With the help of some everyday items lying around the house, you and your Little can create the perfect sock turkey decoration to help celebrate the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. What you will need: 1 brown sock Rice or dried beans 2 rubber bands Ribbon 12-15 colored feathers Construction paper 1 pair of googly eyes 1 Red pipe cleaner Scissors Glue To assemble your turkey, fill your brown sock ¾ full and close with a rubber band to create a base. Add more rice to create a head for your turkey. Roll down the remaining part of the sock to create a hat. Tie your choice of ribbon around the neck in a bow. Using construction paper cut out a left and right foot. Glue each foot to the base of your sock. You can purchase feathers from any craft store of if you prefer, you can create your own with construction paper. Glue the feathers onto the back of the bird in a fan-like shape. To put the finishing touches on your bird you will need to create a face! Cut out a small triangle for the beak and glue it onto your

turkey’s head with a pair of googly eyes. Easily create a wattle by cutting a 1 inch piece of red pipe cleaner. Fold the 1 inch piece in half and twist. Glue the wattle to either side of the beak. Your turkey should now be complete! Give your little turkey a name and put him on display Thanksgiving Day! http://planetforward.ca/

BIG NEWS FROM THE SOUTHERN MENTORING CENTER! Wow! This month flew by…it’s hard to believe it’s almost over. We’ve been super busy in the office making new matches and getting everything together for our biggest fundraiser of the year, Bowl For Kids’ Sake. It’s always a great thing to see so many smiling faces walk in and out of the building and it’s all thanks to the many individuals involved with this program. People know this program is for the children, and it most certainly is, but we’ve heard countless amounts of times that the volunteer’s lives have changed because of their Little and the program. We’d like to applaud and congratulate everyone involved. Keep up the great work! NEW MATCHES Meeting people for the first time can be an awkward situation that many of us don’t really like to be in. We have a lot of brave, hardworking, and motivated individuals that decided to take on the challenge and overcome their fears. It’s been 1 month since that awkward meeting and now these 6 new matches are becoming great

COMMUNITY PARTERNSHIPS The girls of ASA Sorority gladly gave up their time one afternoon after a stressful day of classes to come into the office and paint bowling pins and make sponsor signs for our Bowl For Kids’ Sake fundraiser. They are some great girls and we really appreciate their efforts to help out, even though their schedules are very busy. Not only Abbie and Maddie Alison and Maddie do we have people helping us out, but we have our own Bigs and Littles in the program giving back as well! Big Sisters Maddie and Maddie and Little Sisters Abbie and Alison decided to take a day to dig holes and plant some plants in the community making it a more beautiful place. This isn’t surprising at all because all of our volunteers are nothing but wonderful.

MAYOR’S ENDORSEMENT Mayor Mike Inman and his family have been great supporters of our program for many, many years now. Mike always shows up with a smile on his face and very complimentary words. (Scroll down to the Heritage Days 2015 posts and you'll see Mike onstage telling the crowd about what BBBS does for this community.) I'm not sure we have a bigger proponent in Macomb. Well, Mike has taken it a step further and given his official endorsement, as the Mayor of Macomb, to BBBS and Bowl For Kids' Sake! Can't beat that. Thanks Mayor Inman! MATCH OF THE YEAR Big Brothers Big Sisters has helped a lot of children all over the Mississippi Valley for many years. There is a yearly ceremony held to award and congratulate individual matches that go above and beyond. We had the opportunity to attend and celebrate the 2015 Match of the Year of Warren and McDonough Counties. We’d like to congratulate Big Sister Pat and Little Sister Kacie! These 2 have grown so much together and have gotten to know each other like actual sisters. Watching those two walk to the stage and accept their awards while grinning from cheek to cheek was certainly a sight to see. Congratulations!! SAVE THE DATE – BOWL FOR KIDS’ SAKE The 2015 Bowl for Kids’ Sake event will be on Saturday 7 November, at Digger’s College City Bowl. 2015 is the 15th Bowl For Kids’ Sake! Not only is BFKS our biggest fundraiser of the year but it’s also the most fun. Teachers, businesses, organizations, WIU employees and students, Bigs and Littles will come together for a great day of fun in support of the important work that BBBS does. This year will be the biggest and best BFKS that Macomb has ever seen and we want to make sure that everyone is there to share in the celebration. Bigs, we would love to have you bowl with your Littles from 11-12, with free lunch afterwards. And, if you would like to get together a team of bowlers and raise donations you are the best spokespeople for our organization. Either way, contact the office and we’ll get you signed up. For any potential sponsors reading this newsletter, we have various opportunities (maybe you even want to have a bowling team). Just give the office a call. Be there for Macomb’s only bowling event to benefit local kids!
