RAVE ABOUT YOUR LITTLE: SOPHIA Sophia, 12 years old and in 7th grade, has been matched with Big, Stacy Willet, for over a year now! Sophia has had the awesome opportunity to participate in horse therapy. She has a great voice, and over the summer Sophia wrote a song and sang it for the horse – “Lavern You are a Great Horse”. The owner was in tears. The match washed and pampered Lavern, and her tail was even braided to prepare for the concert. Stacy and Sophia also made a beautiful poster for Lavern. What an amazing experience!
SEND A RAVE TO YOUR MATCH COACH! We will feature your Little in Coaches Corner!

DEAR MATCH COACH—I’M NOT A TUTOR!
Dear Match Coach, I want to support my Little in school, but I want to keep our time together fun! School is important and I want to help them see the importance of their time there. What are some ways I can help them without becoming a tutor? Many of our mentors want to see their Littles improve in school. Kids spend many hours at school and this is an important aspect of mentoring. School is a large chunk of their life which should not be over looked, but Big Brothers Big Sisters is not a tutoring service. Here are some ideas about how you can help as a mentor. Communication- A great place to start would be by talking to your Little. Make sure the questions you are asking are open ended! Don’t let them get by with yes or no answers. This can give you an idea of how they feel about school. You could also speak with their teacher. This will give the school an idea that you are there as an additional support system. Their teacher can give you an idea of what they are good at and what some struggles are. Set a Goal- If your Little is struggling with things like talking in class or not turning in homework create a goal with them. Pick a prize for accomplishing the goal. Let them have a say in the goal and the prize. This will give them some ownership of (Example: Goal-Little not to be
addressed for talking in class for two weeks. Prize- Something the Little likes such as their favorite type of cookie for a snack, or a new set of crayons for school.) Think Outside the Box- You can ask them about projects they have. If you want, you can help them, or you could simply plan out the steps they need to complete it on time. Once you plan it out with them you can check in periodically. You may also choose to reward them if they do well once the project is graded. Be open to ways of helping them that are not directly helping with the work. If they are learning about the civil war, take them to the Arsenal where there is a civil war cemetery. Organize- Something that a lot of kids struggle with is school organization. You could take the time to help them with some organizational skills. This is very important because these skills will be a part of the Little through school and beyond. Maybe helping them pick specific colors of folder for specific classes or organizing a planner for them to use daily. They can use different color pens for each class to make it fun for them. Be Positive- The last thing that can help is to be supportive of the things that they are doing well in! If your Little struggles with reading, then praising them for their great math skills will boost their confidence. There’s no need to go overboard but letting them know that everything about school isn’t negative is important. SEND YOUR MATCH COACH QUESTIONS TO: jkeller@bbbs-mv.org.
M.A.P.S. BOOK OF THE MONTH: NOVEMBER Participating in the Book of the Month Club is a great way to earn a literacy stamp for your M.A.P.S. passport. How do you get your stamp? Each month a new book will be listed as the “Book of the Month”. Read the book with your Little. Then, contact your Match Coach for a question sheet that you will complete and return for a literacy stamp! November Book: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis. Join the Pevensie children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, as they take a trip to another land. Lucy, the youngest of the four, stumbles on a magical wardrobe that takes her to Narnia, where she and her family meet talking animals and mythical creatures. They also meet the evil White Witch, who has ruled the land for 100 years, and has made Narnia a cold and miserable place to live. The children must fight the witch to get Narnia back to the happy, beautiful place it once was.

RecruitONE! BBBS NEEDS MORE VOLUNTEERS! ATTENTION ALL BIGS! Even after a successful 100 Days / 100 Bigs community campaign, we are still in need of mentors for 2017. We need your help! We are asking our current Bigs to provide us with at least one good prospect who you think would make a good Big. Talk with a co-worker, friend, relative, church member or anyone else you may know about becoming a Big. Get their permission to submit their name to us to find out more. No obligation to find out more about mentoring! If they contact us on their own, they just need to let us know who referred them. Any Big who recruits a prospective Big (they go through the interview process) will receive a $20 gift certificate for BBBS gear for them or their Little!

NEW FACES, FUN-FILLED ACTIVITIES IN MACOMB
Bowl for Kids’ Sake! Nov. 5th This month has been busy and productive for BBBS. We have made a total of eight new matches since our last newsletter! We also painted pumpkins with residents at the Elms and we have two more activities coming up in November. Also coming up is our biggest fundraiser of the year: Bowl For Kids’ Sake! With our new matches, new activities, and BFKS we are going to have a great month of November, we encourage everyone to join us in the fun and excitement! Anika & Maria Isabella & Dori
Vivian & Madison
Daymen & Kody Oliver & Chris
New Matches! September was a whirlwind of activity here at the Southern Aliycia & Mentoring Center. We conducted Courtney about twelve interviews with new volunteers. We really enjoy getting to know these good people, and then we get to go out and find a kid to match them with. Interviewing the kids and the parents is just as much fun, but the best part is when we get to actually bring them together and start their match. In the last month we made eight new matches! Each of them is unique, but what they have in common is a commitment to community service and a desire to change lives for the better, forever. (One of the new matches is “no media,” so there is no photo, but we want to congratulate Little Brother Mikey and Big Brother Greg with the rest!) Zechariah & Nick
Pumpkin Painting In October we went to the Elms Nursing Home in Macomb to a fun
Halloween activity with the residents. Five matches, plus four friends of the program, came out to serve the community and bring some joy into people’s lives. Upcoming BBBS Activities We have had great match activities this semester (thanks Nate!) and there are more good ones coming up. Here is the schedule for November. Come out and join us! 11/11- WIU Women’s Volleyball, 5PM at Western Hall 11/17- Cooking activity with WIU Dietetics Department, 5PM at Prairieview Community Center
Bowl For Kids’ Sake 2016 Our biggest fundraiser of the year also happens to be one of our best match activities. Bowl For Kids’ Sake 2016 is on Saturday 5 November at Digger’s College City Bowl in Macomb. Over three hundred community members raise pledges and many local businesses/ organizations sponsor the event. It is a wonderful day, full of fun and a great opportunity to come together in support of the life-changing work BBBS does. The teachers bowl at 9AM, the first community shift is at 10AM, the Bigs and Littles bowl at 11AM (with lunch at 12PM), and the second community shift is at 1PM. And this year we have a late-night Rock ‘n Bowl for the WIU shift on Saturday 12 November from 10-11PM. All bowlers will get a t-shirt, and we have tons of door-prizes to give away, and there is a grand prize for the top fundraiser of each hour. We also have a trophy for the top bowling team of each hour! Whether you are a Big, parent, teacher, or community member call us today to get your team registered.
