DEAR MATCH COACH...

THANKSGIVING BASKET GIVE-AWAY

By Leslie Beert, BBBS-MV Match Coach

Big Brothers Big Sisters staff and AmeriCorps members invite you to participate in a Thanksgiving Basket Give-a-Way! Match Coaches will be choosing a few of our Littles’ families to receive Thanksgiving baskets, stocked full of everything they will need to enjoy a fabulous Thanksgiving meal. Please consider donating a basket to this worthy cause. We ask that you drop off your basket at the BBBS office, 130 W. 5th Street in Davenport by Friday, November 8th. Please keep the following suggested items in mind as you shop:

Does anyone else’s Little ever say, “thank you”? I have noticed in recent outings and visits with my Little, that when someone does something nice for him, he rarely says “thank you”. In this month of “giving thanks”, how can I help my Little to become more aware of the importance in showing gratitude?

Volunteer, A sense of gratitude is an essential ingredient in a happy life, but it does not come naturally to children. Teaching a child the importance of gratitude starts before they can talk and continues until they are an adult. Although you may have not been able to teach your Little from an early age, it is never too late to start reiterating the importance of a simple “thank you”. Below are a few suggestions for teaching your little about gratitude. Set a Good Example. Example is the best teacher, so let your Little see you show gratitude to others. If you appreciate what others have done for you, express it and encourage your Little to do the same. Think Out Loud. Have you ever felt happy just to get out of bed and see the sun shining outside? Don't keep it to yourself! A sense of happy appreciation for the beautiful world around us can be infectious. Give to the Less Fortunate. Involve your Little in charitable giving or volunteer work. Nothing inspires gratitude like realizing how difficult life can be for other people. If you give to a charity, explain to your Little why you do and ask them to help. Your Little will see that many people do extra work to make our world a better place. Appeal to Your Little’s Self-Interest. An older child who didn't pick up the gratitude habit early on might believe that expressing gratitude is a ridiculous waste of time. Explain to your Little that their future depends on the ability to say "thank you." After all, who wants to do business with a company who doesn't appreciate its clients? Who wants to continue helping an ungrateful co-worker?

RAVE ABOUT YOUR LITTLE! Andrew and Edgar Andrew and Edgar have been matched for just about 6 years. Edgar is turning 18 soon and although the match will officially close under BBBS, Andrew and Edgar will be lifelong friends. Andrew and Edgar have participated in so many of the BBBS functions always adding fun to our events. Andrew recently wrote, “I remember being a little tentative and apprehensive when I first signed up for Big Brothers Big Sisters, as I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting myself into. But after getting matched with Edgar and hanging out with him a couple of times, it was clear that I had made a great decision.

Edgar is very easy going, very talkative, and his energy and personality is infectious. I can honestly say we’ve never had a bad time with any activity we’ve done together. There have been times where I had plans with Edgar after a tough day at work and may have thought that I would prefer to stay at home and do nothing. Yet every single instance that thought occurred, I’d later be driving home after having dropped him back off at his house after whatever activity we did, and I’d be smiling and think to myself, yep, sure glad I didn’t stay home, cause that was a great night! And that’s the type of kid he is, he always makes life better, leaves me with a smile on my face.”

I like to ride my bike, play cards with friends and work on home improvement projects. What advice would you give a child who is in our program? Take advantage of the time you have to be a kid. MACOMB NOVEMBER UPDATE

By Peter Tarantola, BBBS-MV, Macomb

Hello from beautiful downtown Macomb!

Paula Rhodes graciously volunteered to continue being the Board Secretary. Thanks Paula! Tonya Hamer, a local teacher, joined the Board. Welcome Tonya!

There’s a lot of activity in this little office right now; volunteer interviews Look at this! every day, wrapping up a hugely successful Bowl for Kids Sake, and beginning The entire Wallace family (3 Littles!) came out to Bowl for Kids Sake. Big to recruit children for the school-based program. Sister Mallory and Big Brother John bowled with the family. Schools In the last month, almost 20 people have applied to become Bigs in Macomb. We’re working diligently to get them enrolled. The principals at both Lincoln and Edison School are on board, and are excited to see how much good our program can do. Parent-teacher conferences are coming up this month, so we should have some child applicants soon. In Bushnell, we’re still trying to secure volunteers, before we recruit children, but in-roads have been made. The principal at Bushnell-Prairie City Elementary is a supporter of BBBS, and is waiting for the word to get started. BBBS Board We had our monthly Board meeting on Monday, October 7th, and everybody seems to be feeling good. We went over the successes of Bowl for Kids Sake, discussed how it can be improved in the coming year, talked about marketing our program in the community, and caught everyone up on how volunteers and children are recruited and enrolled. New life has been breathed into the program here, and the Board members are looking forward to getting more involved.

The Meunier family (3 Littles!) came out to Bowl for Kids Sake. Big Sister Susan and Big Brother Cody bowled with their Littles. Grandfather Don Brown and granddaughter Mariah Brown went doorto-door in Colchester to raise money for Bowl for Kids Sake, bringing over $200 in pledges. BBBS rewarded the Browns for their effort and generosity with a brand new iPod. Longtime Board member Tim Lipp donated a new boy’s and a new girl’s bicycle to the Bowl for Kids Sake event. Big Brother Darrick wrote in support of his Little, Malik, and now Malik has a new bicycle. Thanks Tim!

Speaking of the Board, we would like to announce: Bill Jacobs was elected co-Chairperson. Dan Yoder’s responsibilities as the Acting Chair of the RPTA Department at Western demand a good deal of his time, so Bill volunteered to help out. Thanks Bill!

ASK YOUR MATCH COACH ABOUT HAVlife! There are many exciting opportunities for children to get involved within the Quad Cities. Sports, music, or the arts. Unfortunately, those activities sometimes just cost too much, and the child ends up disappointed and with lost potential. BBBS has partnered with the HAVlife Foundation to ensure that any Little who wants to be involved in an extra-curricular activity has the ability to do so. The HAVlife Foundation exists to help bridge the financial gap and eliminate “lost potential” in students by providing funds for various activities in athletics, music and arts. Need ideas? BBBS maintains a list of available activities that might interest your Little. Contact your Match Coach to learn more.

Thanks to our grant from the HAVlife Foundation, several Littles have experienced activities that might not otherwise have been an option for them. Sofia’s interest in art led her to pursue an art camp through Black Hawk College. Andrea told her match coach that she loved taking ballet through Davenport Jr. Theatre and commented that she learned the 5 ballet positions, how to leap, and how to be more graceful! Trence, a Little who had never participated in an organized sport before, just finished his first season being part of the Sterling Jr. Tackle Football program! After becoming interested in archery at the BBBS match activity to Camp Conestoga, David decided to hone his skills by enrolling in an archery camp through the Davenport Parks and Recreation Department. Many thanks to the HAVlife Foundation for making these opportunities possible!

MONEY-WISE KIDS: FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY By IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union staff

them about saving for retirement. It’s never too early to have that conversation.

No one would recommend that a new driver get behind the wheel without training. The responsibility of operating a car and the consequences of making a mistake are too great. So why take that chance with money? How to get a sense of financial responsibility:

Remember, help them set some SMART goals, define their wants and needs and make a savings plan. These are roadmaps to a successful financial future.

Make the most of “teachable moments”—Look for opportunities when you’re out shopping. For instance, if you’re out shopping together, talk about your own shopping choices or why you’re delaying a purchase. Provide hands-on experience—These types of experiences have more impact for teens than just listening to you talk. For instance, have your teen “Little” make the grocery list for the family for the week. Take a trip to a grocery store and shop the isles. At the market, they’ll see how much of the family budget goes toward groceries. Model money monitoring—Sit down with your teen to go over their list of expenditures for the week. Discuss such questions as: Was this a want or a need? Why did your balance get so low at this point? What could you have done differently in your spending? Introduce plastic—ask your “Little’s” parent if they feel the teen is mature enough to manage a debit card. They could give their teen a prepaid debit card with a spending limit. Again, go over transactions together as they shop. Talk about the future—What comes after high school? If it’s college, what portion of expenses will the teen have to cover? Older teens should start thinking about career choices. This is a good time to talk with

Thanks to IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union for their support of our Money-Wise Kids Program!

BIG’S NIGHT OUT—BIG NETWORKING EVENT!

Big Brothers Big Sisters is so grateful to have had a wonderful Bigs’ Night Out on Tuesday, October 29th. Rivals Sports Bar & Grill was so kind to host us for the night, while Lovewell Fence & Deck graciously sponsored the event. We had thirty-five Bigs and guests in attendance, all eager to meet other Bigs and share ideas and stories about their match. Recently, BBBS had been made aware that though a volunteer could have been in the program for several years, it is possible that he or she might not know or have a connection with any other Bigs. The goal of the Bigs’ Night Out events is to bridge that gap! Together, we have a wealth of resources and knowledge that is often left untapped. At Tuesday’s Bigs’ Night Out, some excellent questions were posed by Bigs, and it was encouraging to see veteran Bigs talking through topics with some of the newer volunteers there. Discussions ranged from how to help a Little understand basic hygiene to how to recognize and handle when your Little is telling an “embellished” version of a story. BBBS staff was pleased by the level of participation and the advice/ ideas that were exchanged.

he believes match activities can play an important role in developing a strong match. The group had a good discussion about the HAVlife grant, and it was emphasized that all Littles can apply for these funds to allow them to participate in a sport, music or art activity. Some in attendance had questions about this exciting opportunity and seemed eager to discuss it with their Littles. Additionally, Bigs learned that several opportunities are available for Littles’ families during the holidays, such as receiving Thanksgiving baskets or being considered as an “adopted family” for Christmas. Bigs were encouraged to talk to their match coach if they believe their Little’s family would be a good candidate for such assistance. With so many children currently on the waiting list for a match, the Bigs at the event also heard about ways that they can get involved in recruitment efforts. Talking to friends, encouraging co-workers, and organizing a workplace presentation are all ways that current Bigs can help meet the need of waiting children.

What a great night we had! Thank you again to Rivals Sports Bar & Grill, Lovewell Fence & Deck, and the Bigs’ Night Out Bigs were given an overview of some upcoming planning committee (Melissa Pepper, Nancy Lane, Mark opportunities for their match and encouraged to utilize all of Lousberg, and Jason Holtgrewe). BBBS is already looking the resources offered by the BBBS agency. There was an forward to the next Bigs’ Night Out, being planned for emphasis on reading the monthly Coaches Corner newsletter Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at Blackhawk Bowl and Martini to “stay in the know” regarding activities and events at BBBS, Lounge at the Hotel Blackhawk in downtown Davenport. as well as getting some great advice on their match. You won’t want to miss it! Community-Based matches were encouraged to attend upcoming match activities, and Big Brother, Kirk, shared why
