WHY THE
Y?
Take a look through the fall schedule. What fits with your story? You can start a new chapter, just by giving it a try. Really, Y not?
MY That’s
2
Everyone you meet at the Missoula Family YMCA has a story about how they arrived. Under the overarching mission of building mind, body, and spirit, you’ll find a boy or girl learning how to stay active and healthy in the youth sports program. In a fitness class, you might meet a woman who never imagined that exercise could be so much fun. With a personal trainer, could be someone you know who is regaining strength after an injury or surgery. Maybe a new diagnosis of arthritis is what prompted a new friend to safely strengthen and tone his body. Perhaps it’s a bucket-list challenge to tackle a climbing wall or the need to certify as a lifeguard behind a member’s introduction to the Y.
$550,000 & 16,100 volunteer hours
Donated by individuals & businesses last year!
Y!
When you become a member at the Y, you are part of a community where your children are cared for, where you can have fun and become healthier, and where social responsibility is a guiding principle. The Y becomes your Y!

WHY THE Y Mother and son Denise and Austin Graef are both employed at the Missoula Family YMCA and both are black belts in Tae Kwon Do. They described the rewards of working in the Y community. “I love being a part of something that helps people get better, stronger and fosters empowerment. There is no greater fulfillment than to see someone overcome an obstacle, push through when they didn’t think they could, and come back for more. I’m grateful to the Y for showing me how I can give. It has caused tremendous growth in my own life,” said Denise, who’s been a group exercise instructor at the Y for three years. Austin said, “The greatest fulfillment I’ve found has been confidence and community. …it’s an activity that has brought me into a greater sense of self-awareness, and shown me that I am able to do great things without necessarily having to rely on other people, but that should I need it, there is a community I could fall back to.” The Graefs were recently in the Y’s Blue Gym, leading movement exercises with Y summer campers from Theater Camp, strengthening youth by sharing what has strengthened them. Little fists curled and punched the air in triumph, and little voices cried out enthusiastic Ki Hups at the direction of the Graefs. “My experience has been nothing but positive,” Austin said. “I’d love it if others could also have similar experiences.”

We love hearing members’ stories about what brought them to the Y. Here are two of our favorites. Norah, Hazel, Asher Attard and their parents Tom and Erica became members at the Missoula Y in 2007. “The Y has everything. It’s the only place in town where I can enroll my kids in preschool, afterschool, and summer camp, as well as have a place to work out while the kids play supervised,” Erica said. This year, all three children attended Camp Imagination. Hazel, who finished fifth grade this year, and Asher, who finished third grade, have attended since the camp’s first year in 2012. It was created to provide a safe yet fun way to learn throughout the summer months when many kids can’t retain what they learned during the school year. “The kids are able to tell me every type of cloud and every detail of Missoula weather and history thanks to Camp Imagination. Often I think, ‘I don’t even know that!’ This camp has definitely helped to prevent summer learning loss,” Tom said. The kids, though, have different priorities. “I love going to parks and having lunches there,” Hazel said. “My favorite part of Camp Imagination is seeing the really cool animals like the bird, the porcupine, and the snakes,” Asher said with a huge grin.
