70 Years
A Brief History of Bethel
»The Bethel School District officially formed in 1949, but our history goes much further back. The first one-room schoolhouses in this area began appearing way back in the
1850s, and many of our current schools predate the formation of the district.
» Spanaway Elementary School officially opened its doors to students in 1928, but it was far from the first elementary school in Spanaway. Built way back in
1869, the first school in Spanaway was built on the southwest shores of Spanaway Lake.
»The Clover Creek Colonial School opened to students in 1938. Eleven years later all the smaller local school districts combined to form the Bethel School District in 1949. The district was named after Ruth Bethel, the first female superintendent of Pierce County.
» Bethel High School opened in 1952, making it the oldest of the district’s four high schools. Bethel High has seen an enormous amount of history during its nearly 70 years, with countless politicians, athletes and academic all-stars passing through its classrooms and hallways.
» When Spanaway Lake High School became Bethel’s second brick-and-mortar high school in 1981, the district’s student population was just 8,761. The school underwent a major remodel in 2010.
» The district’s three newest schools – Frederickson Elementary, Nelson Elementary, and Liberty Middle School – were built in 2009.
A decade later, a bond was passed that will build three brand new schools beginning in 2021.

To pay for meals, all students have an account with Child Nutrition Services. There are four options for managing your student’s account: • Pay with a credit or debit card online at www.PayPams. com. No fees or charges are incurred to pay online. You may view account balances and student purchases,

receive email notifications or auto pay when there is a low account balance. Register for access to your account even if you do not pay online to view cafeteria purchases. • Make payments, check account history and cafeteria purchases, and review low balance notifications on your smart phone. Go to www.PayPams.com to download your free app for Android and iPhones. • Deposit a check or cash into your student’s Child Nutrition account on a weekly or monthly basis. Student accounts are secure and you may ask for a transaction history at any time by calling your school. Account balances follow students from year to year as well as when changing schools within the district. • Know Bethel's Charge Policy. Parents must monitor their child’s account balance. In the event there are insufficient funds, students are allowed to charge a meal purchase (one charge allowed per middle or high school student, two charges allowed per elementary student). Debt for meal charges must be repaid and is the responsibility of the parent or guardian. In the event of a meal charge resulting in a negative account balance, households

will receive an automated courtesy call as a reminder to replenish their student's meal account. Families who believe they qualify for free or reduced price meals must complete a new application each school year. Information about completing the Household Application for Free and Reduced Price Meals will be mailed in August. Families are encouraged to apply online at emealapps. bethelsd.org. Paper applications may be obtained from school kitchens or by contacting the Child Nutrition Office at 253.683.6912.
Please note: Free or reduced eligibility is now transferable between school districts when an application has been processed and approved for the current school year only. Proof of eligibility must be obtained from the transferring school district and provided to Child Nutrition Services before the student becomes eligible in Bethel School District. If families cannot provide verification of eligibility for Free and Reduced Price meals from the transferring school district, the free and reduced meal application process must then be initiated in Bethel School District. Families qualify from the date their application is approved and is not retroactive. When applications are processed, letters are mailed to the addresses listed on the application.
