SCHOOL BOARD

From the desk of...

This time of year we like to reflect on and celebrate those students who are graduating after 13 years of education. Every year I have the privilege to stand on the graduation stage for all four of our high schools and look out over the thousands of young faces, who know that diploma is the first major step in their journey.

Today, a high school diploma ensures an increase in earnings of $10,000 a year over what a dropout makes. But it’s more than that. That diploma is a graduate’s gateway to other opportunities. It’s the first step to get where they have dreamed of going in their lives. And we celebrate that, alongside the families and community who have supported these kids throughout their lives so far. We also celebrate those who take a little more time to get over that bar. For the second year, we will be holding our August Graduation Ceremony at the Pierce County Skills Center and celebrating with those students and their families.

As we hope for the future of these students, we are also hopeful that the Legislature will come up with adequate funding for public education for the first time in 40 years. But, until then, we are going to use all the resources we have available to make sure all of our students are successful, and prepare them for the future. I look forward to seeing them all walk across the graduation stage in the coming years.

el’s 1:1 iPad program “You’re really limited only by your creativity and imagination.” That’s how one Bethel teacher describes the educational possibilities of pairing every student with their own iPad. And that’s exactly what the district is doing right now. By next year, Bethel will have completed its three-year rollout of approximately 17,000 tablets as part of its 1:1 iPad program. The ambitious program was funded by a 2014 voter-approved Technology Levy meant to teach students the four C’s: collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking. The initiative has been a resounding success, and Bethel teachers are busy exploring new and exciting ways to use the tablets. Technology continues to advance at light speed, and school districts that don’t keep up risk being left behind. After poring over research and expert testimony, Bethel policymakers agreed that equipping every student with an iPad would give them the best chance to compete in the global marketplace of ideas. Mary Kolowinski and Allison Horak teach highly capable students as part of the Endeavour program at Naches Trail Elementary. Their classrooms will be part of the final iPad rollout next year, and both teachers say the tablets will be instrumental for their popular and successful Lego robotics program. The teachers say having high-tech tools like iPads in the classroom will allow educators to open up their teaching playbook and really explore unique ways of learning. The district’s overarching responsibility, according to director of digital learning Dawn Moye, is to prepare students for the future. That’s a big job, especially when you consider how quickly new professions are being created and old professions are being reimagined thanks to changing technology. Essentially, today’s kids need to be prepared for a world that doesn’t yet exist. One way to ensure they’re on an even playing field with fellow students around the world is to give them access to the technological tools that are helping shape tomorrow’s industries. Looking toward the future Our community-led Long Range Facilities Task Force will be working throughout the summer Our community-led Long Range Facilities Task Force has been hard at work discussing problems with building capacity and our current building conditions. They also began discussing potential strategies to solve them. The Task Force includes parents, staff and community members who are investing their time in planning the future of our district’s facility needs. “Bethel is part of a growing community,

and we have little room to house new students,” said superintendent Tom Seigel. “So we are very excited to see the recommendations the Task Force has for our school board.” Those recommendations will come after a busy summer for the Task Force. Recently their discussions have revolved around “Capital Investment” strategies, such as adding capacity and upgrading aging facilities, as well as “Non-Capital Investment” strategies, like increased class sizes, year-round

schools, and boundary changes. They also explored the benefits and challenges of building new schools, remodeling or replacing existing schools, and adding portables. And soon, they will begin to unravel the financial side of funding the changes they are considering. You can follow the work of the Task Force on our website, www.bethelsd. org.

Pierce College comes to GK A new partnership between Pierce College and Graham-Kapowsin High School is giving east Pierce County residents access to higher education without the hassle of a long commute.

130 students – both teenagers and adult learners – have already taken advantage of the new program, and GKHS principal Matt Yarkosky says he hopes to build on that initial success.

In January, Pierce College began offering an assortment of core college courses at GKHS. More than

campus. “The folks we’ve worked with at Pierce College have been great,” Yarkosky said. “We’re both really excited about it and excited about the opportunities it affords, not only for our students, but our staff.”

Social Studies

This fall, students will study the world in a whole new way Social Studies is a key part of a student’s graduation requirements, so the decision to change curriculum can’t be taken lightly. In order to graduate, students are required to take Washington State history in 7th grade, and then three years of social studies in high school, according to director of curriculum Mary Sewright. “At 10th grade they take world history, 11th grade U.S. history, and then 12th grade they do a semester of economics and a semester of civics,” Sewright said. So the new curriculum will impact every student in the district before they graduate. “The exciting thing about our new curriculum is it’s not the traditional curriculum people remember when they went to high school, where you’re getting a book and just answering questions and memorizing things,” Sewright said. In fact, the textbooks won’t even be checked out to students. Rather than buying a book for every student, there will be classroom sets, plus some in the library that students can check out if need be. Instead, students and teachers will access the text online via their iPads. Sewright said that change comes with a lot of extras to help students. “There’s an interactive notebook, they can have it read to them in English or Spanish, and there are many other resources they can look at online, even interactive games to do review,” she said.

To choose the new curriculum, Sewright and her team of teachers, administrators and tech professionals had to look at three different sets of standards, because social studies plays an important role in getting students to meet literacy standards. “Social studies and science offer a lot of non-fiction text for students to do close readings of, analyzing documents, looking at academic language,” said Sewright. The district’s new social studies curriculum is from TCI (Teacher Curriculum Institute) which also makes our new K-5 science curriculum. Bethel will also be using DBQ (Document Based Questions), a supplemental online resource, that provides research and writing prompts. Carrie Willenbring has been teaching U.S. history to Bethel Middle School 8th graders for nearly a decade. She says DBQ’s focus on writing and analysis will help her students learn the material. “I like the way DBQ integrates document analysis with the writing of the essay. Before, when we did a document analysis, it was typically a stand-alone activity. Now we integrate sets of documents that are pre-chosen for us that all support one another,” she said. In another change, Bethel’s 7th grade Washington state history classes will be using an online educational resource built by the Central Valley School District that will be revised to reflect our local tribal history.
