Don’t miss your chance to help others in the Beth El Purim Campaign! Purim’s four important mitzvot—Mishloach Manot (gifts to friends), hearing the Megillah (twice!), partaking in a feast (seudah), and Matanot Le’evyonim (gifts to the poor)—are expected of Jews at Purim. This year the Beth El Youth Community invites you to fulfill the special and important fourth mitzvah, Matanot Le’evyonim, “giving to the needy.” We will help those whose needs are greater than our own by contributing portions of funds raised to support two worthwhile charities: Masorti (The Conservative Movement in Israel) and Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger. As in years past, this continues to be the largest fund raiser of the Beth El Youth Community and we count on you for your support and participation. Funds raised will support Beth El Youth Community programming and the two charities listed above. How does this work? The actual mechanics of the campaign are identical to the campaign that we have run for the last several years. A donation will be made in honor of those individuals you choose and they will receive a beautiful card notifying them of your generous contribution. How can I participate? 1. Visit www.purimproject.com and log in with your user name and password. (E-mailed to you. Contact jvegh@bethelnr.org if you need your information.) 2. Choose the families and members of the staff whom you would like to recognize at Purim. 3. You can send a card and make a donation in honor of someone outside of the Beth El Community (details on the website). 4. A donation will be made in honor of those families and staff chosen, and they will receive a card notifying them of your generous contribution in their honor. 5. “Reciprocity” is again available. If you choose this option, anyone who selects to make a donation in your honor, who you did not include in your initial selection, will receive a donation in their honor from you at $3 per. (For example, if five people have made a donation in your honor and you had not already included them on your list, by selecting reciprocity, you will be billed an additional $15 and these five people will receive a donation in their honor from you.) 6. There is a $180 cap on all orders placed (excluding cards sent to members outside the Beth El Community). Click on as many names as you would like and your order will be no more than $180. 7. All orders must be placed by Friday, February 16th. After this, no orders will be accepted and you will not be able to access the website. If you have any questions regarding this year’s campaign or how to use the website, please contact Jen Vegh, Director of Youth & Family Engagement, at 914-235-2700, ext. 247, or jvegh@bethelnr.org. From all of us in the Beth El Youth Community, we wish you a chag sameach!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE community. She graduated college when it wasn’t common for women to achieve that milestone, serving as one of the first female trustees of Beth El, and helped found the Interreligious Council of New Rochelle, and served as its president for many years. These are just a few of her Mark Seidenfeld many impressive accomplishments in a lifetime filled with determination, achievement, and leadership. From a young woman just starting on her journey as a responsible member of the Jewish community to a pillar of our community who leaves behind a legacy of devotion to Beth El and the wider community, these two women have said hineyni – I am here. I have no doubt that Arielle has a bright future ahead and will follow her own words that she shared with us from the bimah. I believe she will push herself to get involved and will use her skills to make the community better. We should all take her words to heart. How can I use the skills I have and get involved to help make Beth El better and to make a contribution to our community? I hope we all push ourselves to get involved so that someday we can look back on a life like Betty did, filled with the rewards that come from commitment to community. See you in shul, Mark
A little over a week ago, Arielle Maliniak celebrated her Bat Mitzvah at Beth El. Like the many Bar and Bat Mitzvahs we are fortunate to celebrate in our congregation, it was a wonderful Shabbat morning. Our sanctuary was filled with family and friends of the Bat Mitzvah, family members participating in many parts of the service, and, of course, Arielle reading Torah, Haftarah, and sharing her thoughts in a meaningful D’var Torah. Like so many of those who came before her, Arielle was poised, charming, and displayed impressive maturity and thoughtfulness for a thirteenyear-old. In her insightful words about the issue of leadership raised in that week’s parasha, Shemot, I was particularly moved by her concluding thoughts—“All of us can be leaders in our own way whether or not we think we are up to the task…It’s just about pushing ourselves to get involved. If we fail to see the ways in which we can use the skills we do have to make the community better, then we risk letting our community down. But this doesn’t have to be the case. Moses didn’t think he could do what God asks of him, yet he finds the strength in himself to do what is necessary to save the people. All of us have the power to be leaders—we just have to believe that about ourselves first.” These are insightful and inspiring words of wisdom from our Bat Mitzvah. Later that same week, I attended the funeral of Betty GradGross, a member for over sixty years. Many of you will recall the decades of service that Betty devoted to Beth El and the larger
LEARN ABOUT OUR FIRST LAPID AWARD RECIPIENTS, ROBYN AND DANIEL YAIRI Robyn and Daniel met in 2001 at a Shabbat dinner at their Upper West Side synagogue in Manhattan. After having their three children—Noah, Avi, and Talia—they moved to New Rochelle. They were immediately warmly greeted by members of Beth El and the synagogue quickly became their home away from home. Robyn grew up in northern Westchester where she was active in USY and attended Camp Ramah. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, she studied at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem before moving to New York. After many years of working in consumer insights at MetLife and Unilever, Robyn started her own consulting practice. Robyn chairs the Youth Services Committee and has also been involved in the Family Initiatives Committee and Nursery School Board. She is currently one of the Gabbaim and is serving on the Journey team. Robyn uses her professional expertise to help Beth El run a rigorous surveying program of members’ experiences. Rabbi Michael Goldman
Rabbi Michael Goldman
will be with us to discuss “Beth El Synagogue Center: A Dementia-Friendly Synagogue” About Rabbi Goldman
Rabbi Michael Goldman was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 2005, served as the University Jewish Chaplain and Hillel Rabbi at Duke University until 2010, and then served as a congregational rabbi at Temple Israel Center in White Plains, NY, for five years. Responding to the need he saw for a communal Jewish response to dementia, he founded Seivah: Jewish Life Beyond Memory. Seivah’s mission is: • to use techniques informed by religious tradition and contemporary spiritual thinking to provide social connection, comfort, and existential meaning for people affected by dementia; • to help develop a culture of respect and inclusion for people with dementia; • to complement the efforts of heath care professionals, social workers, and all geriatric caretakers to provide psychosocial and spiritual care. Rabbi Goldman serves as the Director of Senior Programs for Westchester Jewish Community Services. He created the Memory Minyan, the world’s first religious service that is “deliberately dementia-friendly.” He lives in White Plains with his three schoolage sons and his wife, Abby, a psychotherapist.

The Memory Minyan is based on the idea of the “Memory Café,” which is a meeting place where people with mild to mid-stage dementia and their caregivers can “go out on the town” among others sharing their experience, free from the risk of embarrassment and the bewildering crush of most public places. Around the world, Memory Cafés bring a sense of normalcy and social connection to thousands of families affected by dementia. Now we are bringing the concept to our Jewish gathering place, creating a navigable, warm prayer and social experience. There is no charge for this event. Enjoy delicious hamantashen! Israeli Artist Gregory Niemetz in Museum, February 24th to March 25th We are excited to welcome back Israeli artist Gregory Niemetz for his second exhibit of paintings in the Kanner Kurzon Museum, beginning Saturday, February 24th. All of the pieces in this exhibit will be new to Beth El. The late Gregory Niemetz (1900-1978) had a remarkable life and significant success as an artist. Known simply as “Gregory” or “Grisha,” he was born in Kiev to a wealthy family (his father owned several factories and a bank). He grew up in Riga, which was then part of Russia, and had begun to study medicine when the Russia Revolution started in 1917. While he never joined either the White nor Red armies, he fought against the Bolsheviks’ radical factions, who operated much like today’s ISIS. In total, he went out on seventy sorties during this time.
According to his family, he fled Russia around 1920 because he thought he was on a list to be executed for having killed a number of Red Army soldiers. He sailed to Varna, Bulgaria, where he met his wife and started a family. In Bulgaria, he worked in the Banca Italiana (a bank founded with the help of his father) as the head of customer relations. A talented raconteur, sportsman, and hunter, Gregory also raised prize-winning Angora rabbits. He was permitted to live in Varna during the war, but he was dismissed

Westchester Jewish Council Celebrates Israel @ 70 The Westchester Jewish Council has announced a county-wide celebration to mark Israel’s 70th anniversary. This mega-event will take place on Sunday afternoon, April 15th, at the Solomon Schechter Upper School, in Hartsdale. More details will follow in upcoming issues of The Bulletin on the WJC website dedicated to the event. The celebration is expected to be the biggest Jewish event in Westchester in recent years. “Israel @ 70” will be both a celebration of Israel’s milestone birthday, and a tribute to the great achievements of our young Jewish homeland and its worldwide influence. The event will take place, rain or shine, and will have activities for all ages. There will be a variety of exhibits, speakers, interactive workshops, performances, children’s activities, and, of course, good food. We are gratified that Beth El’s “SEE ISRAEL” event of last May provided some inspiration to WJC in the planning for this exciting upcoming event. Several of our members have been volunteering time and effort to help support “Israel @70” and WJC welcomes Beth El members both to attend and to volunteer prior to and on the day of the celebration. If you are interested in helping to make the day a success with your own personal involvement please contact Bruce Gold at bruces.gold@gmail.com. from the bank due to his religion. Following the war, the Soviet Union—which then controlled Bulgaria—became increasingly interested in Gregory because of his antiBolshevik activities during the Russian Revolution. As a result, in 1948, Gregory decided to emigrate to Israel. Gregory was on board a ship bound for Israel that was held up at port because of the Soviets’ interest in him. Thanks to pressure applied by a local Jewish organization, his ship was permitted to sail for Israel. His wife and two sons followed in 1949. Gregory’s first job in Israel was picking oranges for a kibbutz. He then settled in Kfar Ata (now Kiryat Ata) and became a night watchman in a bonded warehouse. About 1956, a Customs policeman at the warehouse showed him some paintings which he had done. Gregory said, “I didn’t like them. I could do better, and I started painting to show him.” He became a self-taught naive painter, mainly oils on board or Masonite. He painted animals, people, landscapes, seascapes and nudes. He even painted his own grave with mourners “because no one else will.” He did not use models. He mostly painted from memory or imagination. Because the warehouse job did not pay well he bought a cart and mule (Marco) in 1958 and worked as a dray-man during the day. Locally, he was known as “Grisha the carter,” as he was called in an article in The Jerusalem Post when it reviewed his first exhibit in 1966. A review of another exhibit in Haeretz Shelanu in 1967 said that he should be called a painter, not a painter/ carter. He retired from the warehouse in 1965 because his wife had become ill. He continued to paint and exhibited widely, however. Outside of Israel he exhibited in Germany, Great Britain, Argentina, South Africa, and the United States. He was not only financially successful, but also donated paintings for Israel’s war effort and to the Ilan-Israel Foundation for Handicapped Children. Dr. Will Sandberg, the Art Advisor to the Israel Museum, chose four paintings that Gregory donated to the museum. He died in Israel in 1978. Everyone is invited to the opening reception on Sunday, February 25th, 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm, and to meet some of Gregory’s family. You can visit the museum at any time the synagogue is open. If the room is locked get the key from the office.
KERUV* KORNER: WHAT DOES “INCLUSION” MEAN? *“Keruv” = to bring close, to draw near implication is that I am doing something extraordinary. I admit, I love the admiration and it makes me feel good, so please keep complimenting me! But I also feel a little guilty. Let me be clear. I sit with and engage the Chai House crew because they make me happy and enhance my spiritual experience on Shabbat. We all do what we enjoy. I am tremendously appreciative to belong to a congregation that wants me to keep doing this and that makes it easy for me to facilitate others’ Jewish experience in this way. Shelly Christensen writes, “Change your thinking. Don’t do things for people with disabilities. Do them with people with disabilities.” Every individual can enrich our community. We simply will not know how much individuals have to offer until we allow them to participate… Neither will they. This February is the tenth Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month. On Sunday, February 25th, please join us at 7:00 PM, for an inspiring talk by Chava Willig Levy. Wheelchair bound since childhood due to polioinduced paralysis at age three, Chava does not let that define her. Her topic is Disability: Pride, Not Prejudice—Reflections on Judaism and Disability. She will also be available afterwards if anyone would like to buy an autographed copy of her memoir Life Not With Standing. See you there! Elise Richman Nina Luban Keruv co-chairs
Keruv is Beth El’s “inclusion committee,” which means different things to different people. I like the definition provided by Shelly Christensen, co-founder of Jewish Disabilities Awareness and Inclusion Month and author of From Longing to Belonging. “Inclusion means every person gets to determine where, how, and when he or she participates in the life of the Jewish community.” I often have people thanking me for arranging that women from Chai House visit us monthly. Many of us who are regular Shabbat morning attendees have grown quite attached to Lindsay, Leslie, Risa, and Renee, the four women who sit with me, and Shari, who usually sits with congregational friends on the opposite side of the sanctuary. However, I want to be clear that Chai House—a kosher Jewish-supported home provided by New York State with support from Westchester Jewish Community Services/UJA—resulted from the vision and hard work of dedicated parents and the openness and support of the larger caring community. They visit Beth El because someone from WJCS contacted Rabbi Sirner years ago to ask if they could. And, they keep coming because we have the kind of warm, welcoming congregation that makes them and their staff feel at home. We all benefit and we can all take credit. Occasionally someone will tell me “how wonderful” it is that I sit with the women each month and have a relationship with them (as well as with Jodian, Diane, Flor and a few other providers who frequently join them). I agree it is wonderful. However, the

Sisterhood Scene As I am writing this piece for The Bulletin, the Westchester area is experiencing frigid temperatures and dangerous wind chill numbers. This afternoon it was uncomfortably cold as I ran some errands and walked to and from my car. However, after being outside and shivering, I felt good coming to Beth El to play Mah Jongg and enjoy the company of other women in the warm and cozy area set aside for us in the building. Our weekly games, Canasta on Monday and Mah Jongg on Tuesday, bring people together to stimulate our minds, have fun, and enjoy one another’s company. Another way we will all stay warm this month is to join Cynthia Glickman, our membership vice-president, as she leads us through an evening of Zumba Gold on Tuesday, February 13th at 7:00 pm. This will allow us to do low impact zumba that will raise our body temperature, enable us have fun and help us engage in healthy activities. The third way to keep warm during this
very cold time of the year is to participate in the Sisterhood Tea Bag Fundraiser. You will receive an envelope containing a tea bag, poem, instructions and a return envelope addressed to Susan Morris. Please enjoy that hot cup of tea and send a contribution to the Sisterhood Shiva Fund. These funds enable Sisterhood to continue to provide a shiva dinner to Beth El members who are in mourning. (Please see the box below.) All of the programs mentioned in this article, and the many others not listed here, are run by Sisterhood volunteers. We couldn’t make it work without the help of each and every member of Sisterhood. We know that we can’t all participate at the same level because we don’t all have the same abilities and hours to devote to volunteering. BUT, every single one of us can help in some way and at some time. And there is great strength and wonderful outcomes when we work together. In her New Year greeting, Gaye Altman, President of MetroNorth Region WLCJ, included some thoughts about volunteerism

and she quoted from an article she’d read. She said that Jane Zuker, from Sons of Jacob Sisterhood, in Waterloo, Iowa, wrote, “The Jewish woman volunteer has always been special—the backbone of our continuing culture and traditions.” It is because of volunteers of previous generations that we, today, have a functioning Beth El Sisterhood and a 100-year-old Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. It is our responsibility to provide for our daughters and the coming generations so that these traditions continue. Ms. Zucker also added that “we must help the younger generations understand what past volunteers have bequeathed to us, so that we may continue to go l’dor vador, from generation to generation.” I hope to see you all at Beth El in February. NURSERY SCHOOL EXPLORES THE WINTER SNOW There is nothing as special, from a weather point of view, than the first snow of the season. Despite the need to bundle up in snow pants, gloves, scarves hats and boots, our children loved going outside to engage with the elements. They shoveled, made snow angels, created snowballs, experimented with ice,
freezing, melting and packing snow. What do we, as educators, learn from this? Forget the expensive toys adults tend to purchase. Just give a child some water and sand at the beach or water and snow in the winter and they are content for hours! Enjoy some highlights below. Ronnie Becher, Director

A Note from Jen
February Youth Community Highlights
Not surprisingly, many of my social media connections are parents of young children. There was a lot of anxiety, kvetching, exhaustion and general overwhelmedness expressed over the course of the snow days we had in January. Now, in no way do I consider myself some kind of exemplary parent (I was definitely exhausted, too!), but my kids didn’t seem to have much of an issue with playing all day and being entertained in the house. When I thought about it, I realized that it’s probably because of Shabbat! In our family, Shabbat is play time. They love playing games, building, doing make believe. As we worked our way through those cold days, trapped inside, I found myself especially grateful for Shabbat, not just because it’s a restful day in my week, but because I think it’s taught my children to love playing. Consider what carving out some screen-free time in your week might do for you, for your children, and for your family. It’s certainly impacted mine! Happy winter! Religious School Update We were excited to reunite in January. Our learners are using art, music, movement, games, writing, reading and a variety of other methods to explore Jewish life and practice their Hebrew reading and comprehension. We have especially been enjoying our new Hebrew curriculum, Phonetic Hebrew Decoding, which allows learners to expand their Hebrew reading skills in a self-paced, level appropriate technique. We’ve seen tremendous growth in this area! Hebrew reading is bolstered by the tremendous experience of learning prayer with our Tefillah Educator, Sam Blustin. Our learners can be found rocking out to the latest hip melodies for prayer, while learning the words with accuracy.
Religious School Gesher (7th grade) led their younger peers in Gimel-Vav (3rd-6th grade) in an Israeli history themed Hanukkiyyada, color war style competition.
Religious School Gan, Alef, and Bet (K-2nd grade) enjoyed making Olive Oil to light the hanukkiyyah at the Dorothy Fleishaker Oil Press Workshop.
Pictured at left, new Tween Shabbat Lounge now open weekly! This space is for tweens, 4th grade and up, and the expectation is for tweens to treat each other and the space with respect. Please clean up after yourselves, and parents, please check periodically on your children to ensure that this new space is running smoothly. Open from 12 noon (after Youth Services) through Kiddush lunch. *Special thanks to Jessica Berman and family for donating the foosball table and Steven Cohen and family for donating the ping pong table! *And thanks to Amnon and Eitan Gotian, with the help of Bobby, Aden Erlikh, Abner Casanova, Shayna Goldfarb, and Issey Cohen for building this ping pong table! 15

SPECIAL NEEDS SEDER
SEEKING JOB OPPORTUNITY FOR NEWLY ARRIVED REFUGEE FAMILY MEMBER
Wednesday Evening, March 14th 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
This family has settled in White Plains under the auspices of HIAS-NY, and is sponsored by a consortium of local synagogues and churches. (Fully authorized for permanent work in the United States.)
For many years, the special needs residents of local group homes have been guests of our synagogue at a very unique Lower Westchester Special Needs Seder. It is sponsored by the Havorah Program of Westchester Jewish Community Services and our own Sylvia and Robert Scher Chesed Community. If you would like to volunteer, contact Seder co-chairs Ellen Gelboim, esgelboim@gmail.com, or Sandy Gruenberg, gamson36@gmail.com. We need people to prepare prior to the Seder, as well as during the event and at the conclusion. If you are unable to participate physically, financial donations are always needed. Checks should be made payable to the Sylvia and Robert Scher Chesed Community and mailed to Sandy Gruenberg at Beth El Synagogue Center. For more information, visit bethelnr.org/specialneedsseder. Note: We are collecting Passover foods to be sent to the group homes. When you shop for your Passover foods, please buy something extra for those in need! Matzah, candies, crackers, desserts, and other non-perishable foods are all welcome. Please bring them to the office where they will be stored. Watch your e-mail for further information. Don’t delay! This is a very popular event that fills up quickly. Come participate in this very special evening that has become a cherished Beth El tradition. Thank you!
Fluent in English; skilled in use of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook); some experience with QuickBooks. Extensive managerial, administrative, and logistical experience in projects with the American military, United Nations, and Afghan government. If you have or know of an available position, please contact Jeff Swarz at jswarz@mmdillon.com, or Gene Tozzi at etozzi@gmail. com, or call 914-672-1088. Thank you.
