Dear Friends,
Dear Friends,
Among Judaism’s many innovations, the way we grieve is one of the most profound. The mitzvah of k’vod hamet—honoring the deceased— calls us to treat their body with the utmost respect, including preparation for burial, ensuring a shomer (guardian) remains with them at all times, and holding a funeral that celebrates and honors their life.
After the burial, our focus shifts to the mitzvah of nichum aveilim—comforting the mourners. We visit them during shiva, provide meals, bring the synagogue to their home, and gently support their return to the world with patience and compassion.
At the core of these mitzvot is the value of presence. We honor the deceased by attending the funeral and offer comfort by making a shiva visit. Judaism’s practices around loss assume that we, as a community, will show up in whatever ways we can. This is why we send an email to the entire congregation notifying everyone of a loss. It ensures that the community, not just the family’s immediate circle, knows about the loss, allowing those connected to the deceased to honor their memory and provide their family with support and comfort.
One challenge of being part of a large synagogue is that we often don’t know the names of everyone in our community. We may recognize faces and feel connected to people through conversations at services, programs, or shared meals, yet still feel shy or self-conscious about asking for their names—especially after seeing them for years. Or we may see a name in a loss notice and be
unsure whether or not we know the individual. This can lead to a disconnect when someone passes away, as the email announcements we send only include names, not photos.
Without a photo, many may not realize they knew the deceased, missing the opportunity to honor their life by attending the funeral or comforting the family through a shiva visit.
To address this, we are now offering the option to include a photo of the deceased in these announcements. Many other synagogues have been offering this option over the past few years, and my colleagues report that it has been greatly appreciated by their congregations.
This practice will also help identify relatives of congregants, such as parents who occasionally join us at Beth El, ensuring that more people can recognize and honor them. We hope that adding a photo to loss announcements will make them feel more personal and heimish, fostering opportunities for meaningful support and comfort during times of loss—moments that might otherwise have been missed without the photo. Of course, including a photo is entirely optional and at the discretion of the family.
We hope that this small change will have a large impact on our communal response to loss.
L’Shalom,
Rabbi David A. Schuck
Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and school winter vacation. The fall calendar is filled with Jewish (and secular) holidays and often feels like a sprint from one to the next.
For me, the parent of two college kids, when I add fall break and parents’ weekends to the lineup, I am struck by how little “normal” time there was in the fall. Our community’s time at Beth El in the fall can also feel focused on holidays, which present many opportunities for the community to come together in special moments.
look forward to every year, and it provides opportunities for people from every age at Beth El to just spend fun time together, whether you play blackjack, roulette, or like to schmooze and spend an evening hanging out with Beth El friends.
But, as we start January, we now have several months of “normal” time ahead. In many ways, this allows us to focus on the ways that Beth El shines day in and day out. There is the sense of purpose, spirituality and community that exist every single day and week in daily minyan, Kabbalat Shabbat services and Shabbat mornings spent in the sanctuary or on the livestream singing and connecting with one another—and then catching up with old friends and meeting new people over bagels and tuna fish.
And just in January, we have two special Beth El traditions: Youth & Family Shabbat Weekend’s Casino Night and the Beth El Shabbaton. In many ways, these two events epitomize the social aspects of Beth El. Casino Night, while officially connected to the Nursery School, is really a multigenerational fun evening where adults come together to hang out, try their hand at blackjack and a host of other casino games, and just spend time together. It is an event that many people long since “graduated” from the Nursery School
For my family (and many others at Beth El), we attended a Beth El Shabbaton shortly after joining the shul, and it was one of the first ways that we really got to know so many of the people in our community. Through shared meals, beautiful davening, conversation, learning, and softball and basketball games, we got closer.
This year, instead of a Beth El Shabbaton at a camp in the late spring, we will hold a winter Shabbaton (so no softball….). I hope that this weekend will again allow people who have just joined Beth El and those who have been members for many, many years (and everyone in between!) to spend Shabbat forging connections and enjoying a special Shabbat together.
And, before we know it, we’ll be back to thinking about Purim and Pesach.

2024 was a tough year for our family with the loss of our Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather. Donald J. Fleishaker
We couldn’t let time pass any further without expressing our deep thanks and gratitude to our amazing congregation and clergy.
The compassion, support, and love shown to us after his passing was so heartwarming. You shared your stories, your love, your meals, you were all there for us. However, over and above what you did for us during his death, was the way you treated him during his life.
You picked him up for shul and drove him home. You helped him with his kiddush lunch. You invited him to your home for Shabbat dinner. You bandaged his knee when he fell. You encouraged him and listened to him daven. You listened to his opinions. You listened to him “kvetch”. Beth El was his sanctuary. Not the room, this amazing community!
We would like to express our sincerest thanks and wish you all a 2025 filled with Health, Happiness and Peace.

In celebration of the 55th anniversary of Beth El’s beautiful sanctuary, we introduce a year-long series in The Bulletin in which member and lay leader Steven Young reveals artful details you may not have had on your radar. Without further ado, part one: The Great Ark.
We reverently enter the Beth El Sanctuary every Shabbat morning. Our children meet there for Religious School every Sunday. It is utilized for varied programs, including lectures, musical performances, graduations, weddings, B’Nei Mitzvah rehearsals and numerous other events. It is hard to believe that this magnificent room was first utilized for the 1971 High Holidays. How often do we really look at this fifty-five-year-old work of art?
Stanley Batkin, z’’l, a long-time Beth El member, who passed away in 2015 at the age of 101, played the pivotal role in designing the “Great Sanctuary”, acquiring the art, and working with the architects, among many other things, to create this magnificent structure. For many years, he provided institutional memory and advice to a succession of Beth El clergy and leaders. I benefitted greatly from his mentoring when I was President from 2004-2006, and I was fortunate to hear Stanley speak about his dedicated efforts in the creation of the Sanctuary, as well as other art in our buildings. As many know, he wrote a book, Let Them Build Me a Sanctuary, detailing his twenty-year process.
I was asked to write a series of articles for the 2025 editions of The Bulletin to commemorate the anniversary. I plan on exploring some of the obvious (and less obvious) features of this great room, many hiding in plain sight, that is the physical center of our spiritual community. I will rely heavily on Stanley’s book.
I start with a closer look the focal point of the room, the
Aron Kodesh (literally the “Holy Ark”), that Stanley refers to as the Great Ark. We approach it in awe with our families on Yom Kippur and “pull the string” high up on the right to open it, if so honored, on Shabbat.
The colored stones on the doors and body of the ark represent the stones of the Twelve Tribes mentioned in the Bible
Do you have a spare copy of Stanley’s book you could donate to the shul? We are looking to bolster our collection. Please be in touch with our main office if so.
Stanley’s design for the Ark was inspired by the one in the main synagogue in Copenhagen, Denmark and he used its inscriptions in our Ark. He noted that Denmark was the sole European country to rescue its Jewish citizens during the Shoah.
Atop the Ark is the quote Shiviti adonai lenegdi tamid (“I Place the Lord before me at all times”), taken from Psalm 16:8. The interior of the ark has the Shema, in the same script used exclusively for the parchments in the Torah, tefillin, and mezuzot, which are derived from a twelfth century Egyptian alphabet.
The main body and doors of the ark are gold-anodized aluminum. The colored stones on the doors and body of the ark represent the stones of the Twelve Tribes mentioned in the Bible. (Ex. 28:17-20). There are about four thousand chunks of translucent colored polyester glass embedded in the ark. Although there are replacement “chunks” in storage, as far as we know, none were ever needed,
The base of the ark is bronze, with the English statement: “This is the Torah proclaimed by Moses to the children of Israel at the command of the Lord.” (Deut 4:44).
I look forward to sharing other details of the Sanctuary with you during the coming year.

Each day is filled with exciting projects, free swim, delicious meals, and plenty of opportunities to relax and hang out with friends. Campers also enjoy offsite trips, including volunteering at HOPE Community Services and jumping around at Sky Zone.
With flexible weekly sessions, your child can attend for a few weeks or spend the entire summer with us. Either way, they’ll develop new skills, grow in confidence, and make lasting memories in a fun, supportive environment. As one
of our campers shared, “Every single day there’s a special thing! Being in Creativity Camp, I get to have a double swim every day. My favorite memory was when we went to Sky Zone and got to do an obstacle course. The performance was the best [experience]. I loved getting to perform for my friends and family. I also got to make a haunted house out of cardboard boxes. Mine was four stories high!”
Give your child a summer filled with creativity, friendship, and adventure—sign up today! Visit betheldaycamp.org or email daycamp@bethelnr.org to learn more and register. Looking for a trial run? Questions?
One of the most joyous times of the year for children, the holiday of Hanukkah, presents a wealth of learning opportunities in the Nursery School. We pride ourselves as being a process-oriented school - a place where deep learning occurs through exploration and investigation. In general, we are not a product-oriented place where projects, usually teacher directed, are the focus. However, when it comes to our Jewish holidays, we believe in the importance of traditions. Thus, we guide children in creating a ritual object, something that families can use for many years to come.
One two-year-old class used baby jars mounted on a wooden paint stirrer base to create their Chanukiya. Two year olds love to stuff, and they were given a wealth of materials –pompoms, pipe cleaners, beads, and wooden pieces, which they used to fill their jars. On top of the jars there was amble space for tiles and bolts to hold candles. We are confident that these chanukiyot will be used for many years as part of our two -year-old families’ tradition.
Hanukkah is not just about candles-it’s about oil as well. Our children did many experiments involving oil and comparing oil and wax. Whether you light your chanukiah with candles or oil, it can create a bit of a mess! In response to possible dripping wax and oil stains all over your Hanukkah tablecloth, our 3-year-olds created a beautiful, personalized drip mat, complete with the Hanukkah blessings.
Our four-year-olds made a unique Candle Box Holder covered with a beautiful chanukiah that they embroidered on the top. Their box is just the right size to hold the 44 candles necessary for the holiday.
Our Gesher class also created a chanukiya, but in a totally different manner than our twos. They used a mirrored base and patterned tiles. But instead of candles, they received oil vials for lighting.
And what would Hanukkah be without delicious latkes and
jelly donuts fried in oil! It was our pleasure to host several parent volunteers who came to school to help with the frying.
Our annual Hanukkah Chagigah was a fabulous success! Parents gathered in the Crystal Room and spent time with their children experiencing the creative process and methodology of good early childhood practice. They built chanukiot in the block corner, played dreidel, explored light and dark with our light tables, enjoyed Hanukkah puzzles and matching games, played Pin the Shammash on the chanukiah, and engaged in a variety of art activities related to the holiday.
We then moved into the Ballroom for candle lighting, communal singing and dancing with one of our music specialists, Moreh Jack. A few highlights of our program: seeing four parents create a huge human dreidel and spin around at different speeds, and watching our clergy and synagogue leaders jump out of the frying pan and run around the room acting the part of runaway latkes!
Although we were all a bit dizzy from spinning around like dreidels, it did not stop us from enjoying some tasty sufganiot (jelly doughnuts), latkes and applesauce back in our classrooms. We look forward to celebrating many more holidays together with our extended Beth El community.
On another note, we all know that famous phrase, “It is better to give than to receive,” but this is a difficult concept to convey to children, who are culturally bombarded with a much different message. We would like to thank our parent body for remembering to send tzedakah coins with the children. This hands-on-approach helps the children internalize one of the important meanings of “doing a mitzvah.”
As Jews, we are obligated to walk the world mindfully. We teach our children to act with kavod- respect; to realize their responsibilities towards one another and the earth. Our parent body launched a Mitzvah Committee, a program that seeks to increase our children’s understanding of what a mitzvah is and promote a desire in our children to perform acts of kindness. Many pairs of mittens and gloves were collected for The Sharing Shelf and displayed on our Chaverim Chanukiah in the lower lobby.
There is no question that the Hebrew month of Kislev, filled with the joyous and magcal holiday of Hanukkah, could be our favorite one of all!

Thank You, Thank You, THANK YOU, Beth El Community!
Beth El’s Green Team thanks you for 2024’s progress on the road to “zero waste.” Our first and most difficult nut to crack was changing up the garbage disposal process for Shabbat kiddush lunch. That nut has been cracked! More often than not, folks are correctly using the triplet (for trash, recyclables, and compostables) which, happily, decreases our need to dig into one bin in order to transfer your garbage to another. And we deeply appreciate the many of you who participate in the new disposal rhythm with great good humor. Thank you!
You may have noticed that it is the compost bin which fills up fastest and is replaced most often during the meal which is exactly what we’re aiming for! And it’s something the earth needs: composting food and other organic waste minimizes landfill usage, decreases greenhouse gases, and recycles nutrients back into the soil. (“Green – it’s more than a color!”)
The Green Ambassadors on duty at each triplet know the key kiddush question is “Which bin is for my leftovers?” We’re happy to advise that we’re working on new signage that will make it easier to take aim at the correct bin. Other plans for 2025 include the use of triplets in nursery school classrooms where caring for the earth is gently worked into the curriculum.
An important Green Team initiative for 2025 is a respectful suggestion that members catering a special kiddush choose
to use compostable cups, glasses, plates, and cutlery rather than plastic. These are generally made out of cellulose and bamboo and can be more elegant than our standard kiddush compostables. We are aware of caterers who provide these at little-to-no extra cost as well as caterers who do not, in which case the event host can purchase them separately or through the caterer. We hope, for the reasons above, that it is worth it to you to invest in their use. If interested, ask our Director of Programming Stephanie Lederman about this as you plan your event with her.
We thank the terrific Beth El staff for all they do for our community - environmentally and otherwise - and wish each of you a healthy, peaceful 2025. Please note: We can always use an additional Green Ambassador at kiddush lunch from 12-1PM. Contact Jayne Peister at peisterjs@gmail.com if you can spare an hour once every several months to help us help Mother Earth.
Jayne Peister and Laura Lewis, Co-chairs The Green Team Committee
This year is one of those rare occasions when we get to celebrate Hanukkah in January! I love the sage Hillel’s take on lighting the hanukkiah, i.e. we should always be enhancing light and reducing darkness. This fits the mission of our Keruv (inclusion) Committee well. We seek to ever expand the community that makes Beth El shine.
In December, we learned from Haftam Yizhak Heathwood about the Ethiopian Jewish holiday of Sigd. We miss seeing our friends from Chai House here on Shabbat, but we were still able to connect with them by delivering Hanukkah treats. The “Let’s Talk About It” group continues to meet four times a year to explore how we embrace family members who are not Jewish.
February is Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month (JDAIM), which is dedicated to raising awareness of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and to fostering a more inclusive Jewish community. For JDAIM, Beth El will host Rabbanit Liz Shayne, Director of Academic Affairs at Yeshivat Maharat, as an Open Bet Midrash scholar to teach about Neurodivergent Torah on February 25th. Please join us! We are grateful to the Robert Matthew
Klein Fund for Inclusion & Special Needs Fund for helping finance this particular speaker, and all our programming on inclusivity. To support the Robert Matthew Klein fund, please do so at bethelnr.org/donate.
The Keruv Committee is always eager to hear about any barriers that may be hindering your involvement at Beth El. We strive to be a safe and comfortable space for anyone seeking a connection to Judaism and community. Please advocate for yourself (or others) and let the office know how we can make Beth El more accessible! Please utilize the tools we already have, such as our large print prayer books, mobile stands on which to rest those heavy prayer books if needed, non-gendered handicap accessible bathrooms, and sound amplification devices.
Of course, you can also contribute by joining our committee. We generally meet via Zoom on a Sunday evening. Upcoming meetings are March 2nd and May 4th, 2025. Meeting links are publicized in Beth El emails and on the website and are open to all! Contact Carrie Fox at csfox99@gmail.com to join our committee or discuss any Keruv initiatives.
May our light continue to grow!
Do you have any special needs such as wheelchair seating? Please let us know! Please email info@bethelnr.org or call our main office.
Beth El is looking for volunteers to help lead our efforts to expand Beth El’s involvement in the following areas: social action, chesed, and community building/social programming.
If you are someone who is looking to get more involved, please contact Beth El’s Director of Programming Stephanie Lederman at slederman@bethelnr.org
We make sandwiches for HOPE Community Kitchen the first Tuesday of each month at 11:00am.
