RABBI’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, As the summer approaches, things at Beth El settle down a bit. One of the aspects of our communal life that does not change is the minyan, which I am proud to say remains open to our synagogue and the larger community 365 days a year, for anyone who wants to pray together with a Rabbi David Schuck minyan and/or remember a loved one by saying kaddish. We recently hosted an open conversation for the synagogue about how we envision the future of the daily minyan. I would like to share some of the most salient elements of that conversation with all of you: • The clergy team and all who attended the meeting affirmed the centrality of our daily minyan to the identity and mission of Beth El Synagogue Center. • We were transparent that for the minyan to remain vital to our community, more people must make a personal commitment to attendance. • The clergy team will work hard to be present at as many minyanim as possible. • The clergy team’s conceptual vision for a daily minyan is that the more congregants that are empowered to attend and lead the minyan, the stronger it will be.
I am proud that Beth El’s minyan is not dependent on rabbis and cantors to function. The clergy very rarely lead the service; we are there to welcome everyone, call pages, assist people who are unfamiliar with the service, and to be a general pastoral presence. As we transition to a three clergy model, we will strive to continue to be present as often as possible, but there will be days that this will simply be impossible. We are often running multiple minyanim (at times we have two or three shiva minyanim in addition to the synagogue minyan) which will preclude us from being present at all of them. Under the leadership of the Ritual Committee and its chair Mark Silver, we have developed a system of lay leaders who have volunteered to help facilitate and run a minyan when need be (if you would like to volunteer for this, please let us know). This will ultimately strengthen our minyan and move us toward a more empowered Jewish community. Not only are we proud to offer the community a daily minyan three times a day, but we always set that minyan according to the appropriate halachic times. In the summer, we used set the minyan to never start past 8:15 pm because it was difficult to get ten people later than that. This summer, in an attempt to be certain to daven (pray) within the boundaries determined by Halacha (Jewish Law), we are setting the minyan times for July and August a bit differently. Please be sure to check the times on our website (bethelnr.org) to be sure that you have the correct time. If you are interested in the halachic issues that we considered, please read below my signature. We look forward to finding ways to increase the support of our daily minyan, encourage more people to attend when they can make the time, and empower our congregation to take ownership over this deeply important aspect of communal Jewish life. Cantor Aqua, Rabbi Sitkin, and I look forward to seeing you at minyan! Have a wonderful and safe summer. L’shalom,
My vision for Jewish life is that individuals ought to feel empowered to take ownership over all aspects of their religious/ spiritual lives and Jewish identities. Rabbis and cantors ought to be utilized along the way as teachers, advisors, and facilitators. One of the unintended consequences of the ways in which our movement “professionalized” Judaism was that it created a dependence on professional Jews (clergy) to “do Judaism for us” or “on our behalf.” This creates a lethargy in practice and subtly encourages a passive approach to being Jewish, which is precisely the opposite outcome that we want.
Rabbi David A. Schuck
SETTING THE TIMES FOR SUMMER MINYAN There are two options in halacha with regard to setting the times for mincha (afternoon service) and maariv (evening service). One position is Rabbi Yehudah’s, which is that mincha should be recited by plag hamincha (1¼ shaot zmaniyot—halachic hours—before sunset). If one does this, he is permitted to recite maariv immediately after mincha even though it is before shkiah (sunset). The other position is that of the Chachamim (the Sages), and they say one can daven mincha until shkiah (sunset, which is later than plag hamincha) and then daven maariv. In both cases, it is permissible to daven maariv before it is fully dark, but one should recite the shema again after dark. At Beth El, we set the times according to the Sages, which means we set mincha to finish by sunset and start maariv immediately. If you are interested to see all of this in our legal sources, the Aruch Hashulchan captures it well when he writes:

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Looking back, looking forward . . . I’ve been doing a lot of that lately. I have been looking back over the past three years and all that Sam has accomplished. He steered our ship through one of the biggest transitions we’ve experienced in the last half century—the end of one era with the retirement of our beloved Rabbi Sirner after forty-three years of dedicated service to Beth El, and the beginning of a new era as we welcomed Rabbi Schuck to our family and embraced the wonderful meaning, ruach, and spirituality he has begun to breathe into our community. I look back in awe and appreciation at the tireless efforts of our past presidents and other leaders, who have put in place a solid foundation so that we all can thrive and work towards an even brighter future for our kehillah kedoshah (sacred community). I look forward with more than a little trepidation (and a large supply of Pepto Bismol!) at the challenges ahead as I step up to be your synagogue president. But I know that I’m not moving forward alone, but rather in partnership with the other officers, our clergy, and the entire staff, all of whom are committed to the hard work necessary to constantly make Beth El the meaningful, supportive, enriching community we all love. And, of course, I take enormous comfort knowing that I’m moving forward with a community of members who are as devoted to Beth El Synagogue Center as I am. I also move forward with a great sense of appreciation. Not
just for the people and circumstances I’ve already mentioned, but for the opportunities to learn and grow together that lie ahead. For the Judaism and love of Israel that we get to experience through our involvement at Beth El, for the bonds of friendship forged through our involvement in this community, and for the ongoing opportunity to create new relationships with people who come to Beth El seeking and finding the home we’ve all grown Mark Seidenfeld to love. I have no doubt that the coming years will bring challenges, sleepless nights, and stress (reflected in the many “condolences” I’ve received). A friend even gave me earplugs and a big bottle of Tylenol as a gift to prepare for becoming president! But I am going to focus on the chance to give back to the community that has given so much to me and my family, as I’m sure it’s given to so many of you. In that spirit, I look forward to beginning this journey together, conquering the challenges and celebrating the successes in the years ahead. See you in shul,
Mark
About Our New President, Mark Seidenfeld Mark grew up in Kew Gardens, New York, attending the Solomon Schechter School of Queens and spending summers at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires. His parents, survivors of the Holocaust who married and immigrated to America after the war, infused their home with strong Zionist ties and a deep sense of pride in their Jewish heritage. Mark attended the University of Pennsylvania and spent his junior year abroad at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. While in law school at Boston University, he met his “basherte,” which is no exaggeration since Marjorie and Mark met by chance at a concert in Central Park in 1986 and married
in 1989. Mark started his career as an Associate at Proskauer Rose, and then moved to be in-house Counsel at Simon & Schuster. He is currently Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Scholastic Inc., a publisher that specializes in educational materials, children’s books, and media, where he has worked for over twenty-two years. Mark and Marjorie settled in New Rochelle in 1992 and, after the arrival of twins Michael and Talia, they joined Beth El Synagogue Center in 1997. The family welcomed son Jonah in 2002. Through Torah for Tots, Junior Congregation, the weekly Shabbat [continued, page 11] luncheons, Mishpacha (now J-Life), and
SUMMER MINYAN, continued from page 4 “In regards to the matter of when the time for reciting mincha ends, the rabbis taught in the beginning of the fourth chapter of berachot: One may daven Mincha until evening; Rabbi Yehuda says: until Plag HaMinha, which is 1.25 halachic hours before sunset...According to the sages the time for mincha extends until the evening, after which one may begin to daven Maariv in the evening and not before. According to Rabbi Yehuda, one may daven Maariv from Plag HaMincha onwards. The simple issue is that when the time for davening Mincha ends, the time for davening Maariv begins; and so our rabbis the Tosafot, the Rosh (Rabbeinu Asher ben Jechiel), and the Rashba (Rabbi Shlomo ben Aderet) all agree.” Practically speaking, if one sets the times according to Rabbi Yehudah, then Mincha/Maariv would be significantly earlier than if it is set according to the Sages, especially in the summer. The sources suggest that one should set these times according to one opinion (Rabbi Yehudah or the Sages) and not move between them. One is only permitted to set times according to both opinions in a pressing time of need, which we will understand broadly to include the challenge that our community has in making a minyan in the summer months when it would not start until 8:30pm/8:45pm. Therefore, in the hope to consistently fulfill our commitment to ensuring three daily minyanim according to the appropriate halachic time, we will set mincha / maariv for the months of July and August according to Rabbi Yehudah’s opinion, which during these months, will be significantly earlier than the other option. We are always open to your feedback as we try to balance the commitment to a daily minyan and halacha. Sincerely, The Clergy Team (Rabbi Schuck, Rabbi Sitkin, and Cantor Aqua) 5

Israel Affairs Committee (IAC) Report Beth El’s Israel Affairs Committee has wrapped up another full year of programming. Our year kicked off in the Fall with a very interesting presentation by Talia Levanon, from the Israel Trauma Coalition, and sponsored by the UJA. We followed with two winter programs—a talk by Ann Lewis, Former White House Director of Communications for President Bill Clinton and Senior Advisor to Hillary Clinton on America’s relationship with Israel sponsored by AIPAC; and a Shabbat visit by Shai and Nir, two young IDF soldiers sponsored by StandWithUs. In April, a Beth El delegation, including a Beth El teen contingent, attended the annual AIPAC Convention in Washington DC. In May, we held S.E.E. Israel (Support, Educate, Engage). This ambitious Israel festival was the first of its kind—it included panel discussions, a forum with representatives of fifteen Israel-related organizations, Israeli food, kids activities, letter writing to Israeli soldiers, and a keynote speech by Ret. IDF Col. Kobi Marom. This unique event attracted people from throughout the community, as well as some media coverage. Col. Marom’s speech was broadcast on the Jewish
Broadcasting Service in June. And last, but not least, last month, our Beth El delegation braved the rain and proudly marched in the Israel Day Parade (some photos appear below). This year also saw changes in the leadership of the Israel Affairs Committee. David Horowitz retired as chair of this committee after six productive years, and Mike Schiffres and Mark Seidenfeld became co-chairs. Todah rabbah to David for his great service and commitment over the years to insuring Israel remains front and center in our community. Now, with Mark assuming the Beth El Presidency, the IAC welcomes Bruce Gold, who will join Mike as co-chair. Stay tuned for details about an Israeli wine tasting event that we are hoping to host this summer at Beth El, and more great programs in the year to come. We hope you will share your love and support for Israel by joining the IAC. Check the calendar for our next meeting in September, or contact Bruce at brucesgold@gmail.com, or Mike at michael.e.schiffres@gmail.com. B’shalom, Mike and Mark

Beth El’s Summer ALL FILMS BEGIN AT 7:30 PM, AND COST $8 PER PERSON THE WOMEN’S BALCONY THURSDAY, JULY 6th Nominated for five Israeli Academy Film Awards Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Music, Costume Design, Makeup Currently Playing in Theatres The Women’s Balcony is a heart-warming comedy/drama about community, old traditions and values, and the power of women to keep all of these together in the face of modern extremism. When the women’s balcony in an Orthodox synagogue collapses, leaving the rabbi’s wife in a coma and the rabbi in shock, the congregation falls into crisis. Charismatic young Rabbi David appears to be a saviour after the accident, but slowly starts pushing his fundamentalist ways and tries to take control. This tests the women’s friendships and creates an almost Lysistrata-type rift between the community’s women and men. “A very human and funny story.” —The Jerusalem Post “Viewers will leave the theater in a joyous mood.” — Variety “The entire cast is solid, but the women, especially Ms. Hagoel, bring depth to their comedic and dramatic turns.” —The New York Times
VISE VERSA MONDAY, JULY 17th A Beautiful Unique Film. Featured at more than twenty festivals. Can we repent? Is it possible to leave past sins behind? Can we go back in time? These questions are posed at the start of this outstanding, very human drama. Vice Versa is a poignant love story between a religious Yeshiva scholar, Yochai, and an 18 year-old cancer patient, Ayelet. The two embark on an unexpected relationship that presents a deep portrait of love, faith, and repentance that will change both of their lives, transcending the rules of religion, society, and faith. In a world in which physical contact is forbidden before marriage, the future rabbi has to make a choice that could determine his life. “The delicate and hesitant love story, and then the complete passion and emotion woven between them, is depicted and staged poetically” – Haaretz (translated) 8
Israel Film Series ALL FILMS ARE IN HEBREW WITH SUBTITLES.

BROTHERS THURSDAY, AUGUST 3rd A film we missed but shouldn’t have! Winner of more than fifteen International Awards. Two brothers struggle to come to terms with their political and religious beliefs when they reunite in Israel after years of silence. Dan, a secular kibbutznik and staunch Zionist, lives a quiet life with his family. His brother Aaron is a religious New York lawyer, who takes up a case defending the rights of Talmudic students to refuse military service. When the case threatens to incite civil war, the two men are forced to re-examine their relationship, beliefs and political positions. The film opens a subtle yet essential discussion on the separation of religion and state in Israel, as well as the circumstances that tear families apart and bring them together again. Brothers dramatizes the conflict between the secular and religious, and portrays Israel as a political example of a split personality; the struggle between the ultra Orthodox and the state.
FAMILY MATTERS TUESDAY, AUGUST 8th A Heartfelt Film about Relationships. Audience Favorite Award at the 2015 DocAviv Festival. Family Matters tells the story of the film director’s family, when the divorce of her mother, the author Yehudit Rotem, from her father, an esteemed ultra-Orthodox rabbi in Bnei Brak, turned her life upside down. When Yehudit Rotem, a rabbi’s wife, left the world of ultraOrthodoxy and became a writer, her story turned into a success story. Behind the spotlights, however, there was another story, the story of the children who were uprooted from one world to another world. This documentary is directed by her youngest daughter Noa Roth, who is both curious about the circumstances leading up to the breaking up of her family and wants to come to terms with her own understanding of what constitutes a complete family. On one hand, an exposure to cultures and societies that you would never encounter in person. On the other hand, there is a common humanity that we can all relate to. 9
Carole Graham and Norma Wasserman Present “Oil and Water Mix Very Well,” in the Kanner Kurzon Museum, through July 23rd Carole Graham presents her oil paintings and Norma Wasserman presents her Chinese and other watercolor paintings in this joint exhibit. The two media can be enjoyed individually and jointly, as you will see. Norma will exhibit mostly flowers, but will also show some others. Carole’s paintings cover a variety of subjects. This will be Norma’s fifth exhibit of her art in our museum. She has also provided piano accompaniment for various Beth El programs through her many years at Beth El. Norma has been studying painting in various media since childhood, and her first Beth El exhibit consisted of her Westernstyle watercolors. She has been focusing on Chinese watercolor painting in recent years, and her pieces in this exhibit will be entirely Chinese watercolors on rice paper. She will exhibit landscapes, flowers, animals (including roosters since this is the “Year of
the Rooster”), and other subjects popular in Chinese paintings. Her last exhibit here (two years ago) included artwork by her teacher in New York and several of her fellow students. Norma also studies with another teacher in Florida, where she spends her winters. She has her own marble “chop” with her name written in Chinese! Her paintings have sold well and are in many collections in our metropolitan area and elsewhere in the United States. She is a member of the Scarsdale Art Association and the Lake Worth Art League (Florida). Carole exhibited previously at Beth El when she and her daughter Danielle (who is a
photographer) had a joint exhibit five years ago. Carole began painting with oils about thirty years ago, stopped while she was working fulltime, and then resumed her lessons about eight years ago at the Theodore D. Young Community Center, in Greenburgh. She has assisted in teaching art at Wave Hill, in the Bronx, where she also finds some of the subjects for her own painting. Carole has also volunteered for the Art Project at Wave Hill for family weekends. She considers Beth El’s Ellen Hollander to be one of her mentors and has worked on backdrops and sets with Ellen for youth theater projects at Beth El. She has also exhibited her oils at the Greenburgh Town Hall, as well as at Wave Hill. You can visit the museum any day; if the room is locked please get the key from the greeter at the front door or from the Beth El office.
MEMORIES TO GO Memory...is the diary that
we all carry about with us. Oscar Wilde
I want to thank the members of our “Memories To Go” class for all I have learned from them and for the privilege of reading their stories. I will not be teaching this class next year. I am happy to say that I am working on a new book right now. I also want to thank Lester Zimmerman for his help in creating this class. Memories are particular, but the need to share is universal. Writing essays is one of the best ways to preserve memories for future generations. I’ve always believed that all people can write, and this class has not only reinforced that belief, but has taken it to a higher level. The quality of essays has exceeded my expectations, as has the quality of criticism. Sharing their stories with not only one another and me, but with the entire Beth El congregation was wonderful for all of us. So many people approach me with praise for the essays they have read in The Bulletin. I want to thank all our Beth El readers for their support. To our class—keep writing. Remember that your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren value you and want to know as much as they can about your life. Share with them as you have shared so generously with each other and our Bulletin readers. Finally, I would like to thank the members of our class for trusting me with their memories, for teaching me their life lessons, and for extending to me their friendship and support.

KERUV* KORNER *“Keruv” = to bring close, to draw near WEAVING A BEAUTIFUL NARRATIVE TOGETHER Over the past year Keruv has helped us learn and inspired us through story. Many stories. Diverse stories. Our stories. At Let’s Talk About It, parents of intermarrying couples discussed how they are adjusting to and encouraging their children’s Jewish journeys. At a Kulanu Shabbat Experience, members of families with special needs shared what each one felt thankful for and how much they loved one another. At a recent Pride Shabbat service and at an unrelated SMART (Senior Mature Adults Retired Together) event, a Beth El teen and her mother, both trained by Mosaic of Westchester to be storytellers, separately shared what it was like not only to transition genders, but to parent someone who is transitioning. In a forum last fall, we heard from three parents who are not Jewish about how they have successfully raised Jewish children with their spouses. And this past spring we heard from Rabbi

all their other involvements at shul, Mark and Marjorie and their children developed strong bonds of friendship with many families at Beth El, which has become their second home. All three Seidenfeld children attended the Solomon Schechter School, as well as Beth El Religious School and Day Camp, and followed in Mark’s footsteps at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires. Mark has served as Vice President and Executive Vice President of Beth El; cochair of the Rabbi Search Committee that brought Rabbi Schuck to our community; co-chair of the Israel Affairs Committee; and he serves on the Human Resources Committee. He has chaired Synagogue 2000 (S2K), the Focus Committee, co-chaired Ramah Shabbat, the Centennial Celebration, and the Annual Beth El Kallah. He has also served on the Assistant Rabbi Search, Nominating, Dinner Dance/Gala, and High Holiday Honors Committees. Mark is humbled and honored to serve as the next president of Beth El, knowing he has to try to fill some pretty big shoes of the many wonderful leaders that have come before him. He looks forward to serving the Beth El community, which his family has come to love and appreciate so much.
Schuck about how Conservative Jewish rabbis are trying to welcome intermarried couples into the Jewish fold within the context of Halakhah (Jewish law). Private conversations also hold stories that teach and inspire—stories shared over Kiddush lunch with the women of Chai House; laughing comments by the happily married gay couple that with all the attention being paid to transgender and non-binary individuals, the two of them feel like “yesterday’s news,” stories shared by Beth El members who journeyed here from the Philippines, India, Israel, Ukraine, England, Jamaica, Scarsdale. The ups and downs, frustrations and joys we each have shared with one another are our stories. Jewish tradition relies on the power of narratives to enlighten and teach. Keruv embraces this tradition. In the year to come we hope to facilitate more storytelling, so Beth El continues to learn and grow as a community. We will resume sharing our experiences with intermarriage at Lets Talk About It, which will reconvene after the fall holidays. We hope to have more Kulanu Shabbat/holiday experiences next year as
well. Pride Shabbat and the Pride Parade are set to become annual Beth El events. Having read the memoir, A Life Not With Standing, beautifully written by a Jewish woman paralyzed by polio at three-years-old, we hope to bring the author, Chava Willig Levy to Beth El as a speaker for Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month. In her autobiography, Dr. Willig Levy relates how she overcame many barriers to build the life she wanted. A professor, advocate, wife, and mother, she and her story are truly inspirational. Whether you have a story to tell or want to join us as we learn from the stories of others, consider becoming a part of Keruv. We want and need your help! We will be meeting at Beth El on Sunday, August 6th, at 11:00 am, to plan for the year. Join us then, or e-mail us at the addresses below. We look forward to hearing from you. Happy summer! SISTERHOOD Sisterhood Scene In the many years that I taught in an elementary school, I always looked forward to the first few weeks of summer vacation. I could relax my daily routines and reduce the number of activities I did each day. It was a time to carefully review what worked well in my classroom and what needed to be changed for the following year. By the end of July, I was already beginning to plan for my next group of students and become familiar with new materials I might want, or be required, to use. In Sisterhood we do the same thing. We review what we did in the past year and then begin to plan for the new year of meetings and activities. In early August, we will be sending out our membership information. Please sign up as soon as you get the brochure and dues envelope. It is so very important for all the women of Beth El to support Sisterhood. Paying your dues enables us to make the contributions that we annually give Beth El. It also gives us the opportunity to fund specific projects that enhance the synagogue and make it a better place for all of us. Together, as a community, we make greater actions possible. Your membership in Beth El Sisterhood also makes you a member of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. This is the group
of Conservative Jewish women, founded in 1918 by Mathilde Roth Schechter, to “perpetuate traditional Judaism in the home, synagogues and communities.” Women’s League members have been at the forefront of the movement for women’s equality on the pulpit and in the workplace. You add your voice to the organization that today is dedicated to enriching and empowering Jewish women throughout the world. Here at Beth El we have some Sisterhood programs that don’t take a vacation in July and August. We continue to cook for the HOPE Kitchen. We meet for “Bagels & Books” and “Evening Wine & Cheese” Book Groups. Our weekly Walking Club also continues on Monday mornings. If you are available, please join us. I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize Barbara Horowitz and thank her for the wonderful job she did as Sisterhood president for the past three years. This past year, as I served as her senior vice president, Barbara always included me in decision making processes and taught me the way we do things at Beth El. I only hope that now, as president, I will lead Sisterhood with as much grace and passion as we saw in Barbara. Enjoy your summer. I look forward to seeing you at Beth El. NURSERY SCHOOL Nursery School Mini-Camp Comes to Beth El This year, in response to the needs of a number of our Nursery School families, Beth El Synagogue Center offered a Mini Camp! This two-week program was a helpful bridge between the end of school and the start of Beth El Day Camp. The Mini Camp was structured as a half-day program, with a lunch
option, and was unique in that we had our 2s, 3s, and 4s all together in one group. The children engaged in extensive water activities, sand play, painting, and art experiences. YOUTH & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT RELIGIOUS SCHOOL GRADUATES Religious School This year our three Religious School program, who, in the opinion of the faculty, End-of-Year Graduates were recognized on Graduation over the preceding four years, exhibited Showcase Shabbat on Saturday, May 20, 2017. The most consistently the qualities of character,
This year our elementary school families gathered on May 25th for our long-awaited End-of-Year Showcase. Beginning with a photo montage (available on the Religious School Facebook page), the evening focused on celebrating the meaningful learning in which our children engaged over the course of the year. Each child prepared a portfolio of their work from the year. The class brainstormed three questions parents could ask them that would highlight their learning. At the Showcase, parents toured around, meeting children from each class, asking them the guiding questions, and viewing their portfolios. The room was buzzing with excitement as children enthusiastically shared their learning and parents demonstrated just how impressed they were with the knowledge, insights, and excitement that the Religious School children displayed. The evening concluded with a brief reflection and a pizza dinner, sponsored by the Parent Organization. Two of our Vav learners were recognized for showing extraordinary commitment to Hebrew language. Mazal tov to Jeremy Marcus and Sammy Weber, who received the Gornstein Memorial Award!
Follow the Religious School on Twitter! @bethelrelschool FILL OUT THE SUMMER 2017 SURVEY (visit bethelnr.org) so we can be in touch with your child over the summer! Everyone who fills out the form will receive a handwritten note from us or an in-person visit!
