MEET BETH EL'S NEW OFFICERS DAVID SHECHTER, Vice President DEBBIE YOUNG, Vice President

David Shechter grew up on Long Island, where his family was active at Midway Jewish Center. He spent ten summers as both a camper and counselor at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires, which provided the foundation for his Jewish education and Kavannah. David—a member of AEPi and Hillel—graduated Cornell University in 1995. He met his future wife, Carrie Fox, at Cornell when she recruited him to study abroad for a semester at Ben-Gurion University in Beersheva, Israel. They started dating when David returned to Cornell in 1994 and were married in 1999. David earned a Ph.D. at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and did post-doctoral training at The Rockefeller University. Since 2009, David has been Assistant and Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. David’s lab studies chromatin biology, dissecting how the packaging of the genome regulates the usage of DNA. David and Carrie moved to New Rochelle in 2010 and quickly immersed themselves into the Beth El community. David serves on the Board of Trustees, the Ritual Committee, a Vision Action Team, and is chair of the Kasakove High Holiday Service. He previously participated in two Assistant Rabbi Search Committees. Carrie and David’s children—Ilana, Jacob, and Naomi—consider Beth El their second home. You can find them at the Religious School, youth services, and USY. David’s parents, Cindy and Ira, recently moved to Westchester and are now active members of Beth El. David enthusiastically embraces the new spiritual, singing, and educational directions of our community.

ELLEN BARLIS, Financial Secretary

Ellen Barlis was born and raised in Newton, Massachusetts, where she and her two siblings attended the Newton public school system. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in General Science from Brandeis University, followed by a Masters in Public Health in Hospital Administration from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. She married her husband, Rick, in 2002 and they have two children—Anna (14) and Aaron (10). They moved to New Rochelle from New York City in 2007, and joined Beth El where they have been active members for twelve years. Their children attended the Nursery School, the camp and Beth El Religious School. Ellen’s professional background includes over twenty years working for the City of New York in various capacities. Ellen’s current continued, page 6 role is Chief Financial Officer at

Debbie Nutkis Young grew up in New Jersey and attended the Jewish Educational Center in Elizabeth from Kindergarten through High School. She graduated from Douglass College, Rutgers University with a double major in Sociology and Hebraic Studies as well as a Criminology Certificate. Debbie is chair of the Ushering Committee, a member of the Ritual Committee and is working on the Pillars that developed from Journey. She is currently on the UJA Westchester Women Cabinet. She was a chair of the Membership Committee and the December 25th Holiday Program, served on the Youth Activities Committee, was a parent facilitator for Teen Congregation, and is known to a generation of Beth El Religious School students and their parents as “Morah Debbie.” She was Beth El’s first Simchat Torah Kallat Maftir, volunteered for Hadassah, and was an officer of the Schechter Westchester PTA. She and husband, Steve, a past Beth El President, were honored by JTS and were Beth El Gala honorees. Before retiring, Debbie negotiated publishing contracts at Harper & Row and Budget Book Service, headed a sales force of Christian booksellers, was the first professional of the New Rochelle Jewish Coalition, and was a Corporate Paralegal at both Starwood Hotels and Thomson Reuters. Steve and Debbie met as teenagers at Camp Massad Beth, and the Jewish camping and living experience made a lasting impression that has guided them ever since. They joined Beth El in 1990, shortly after moving to New Rochelle. The Youngs have celebrated their s'machot, including Youth Plays, three Bnei Mitzvah, a baby naming, and a wedding at Beth El. Their children attended Schechter Westchester, Westchester Hebrew High School, Camp Monroe, and Ramah. Debbie and Steve are the proud parents (and grandparents) of Jake and his fiancée, Marie; Gavi and her husband, Rabbi Jason Fenster, and their son, Benjamin; and Becky. Debbie is thrilled to serve once again, as a Vice President of Beth El. She has also served as Financial Secretary.

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR RECOGNITION “Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.”–—Sherry Anderson The lifeblood of any not-for-profit is a combination of its staff, financial support, and its volunteers. While the first two get a lot of focus, volunteer recognition is often taken for granted. As part of our Journey Prototype Bootcamp last December, a volunteer recognition committee was formed because this group views acknowledgment and appreciation as a challenge for Beth El that needs to be rectified. While we have always had a few very visible forms of recognition, such as being a Gala or Simchat Torah honoree, or being honored directly by our various committees and affiliates, this article is a first step towards expanding that effort. We have been aided in our thought process by both the folks at METNY/ United Synagogue and the Westchester Jewish Council, and thank both of them as well. At the risk of being immodest, first we would like to thank and recognize the members of the Volunteer Recognition Committee itself. Our group consists of Carole Graham, Ellen Hollander, Erica Epstein, Marc Klee, Nina Luban, Jayne Peister, Michael Schiffres, with a big dose of support from Barbara Cohen, Debbie Young, and Abby Wise.

Now we would like to be able to thank all of the special volunteers that populate the Beth El community. Our committee wants to honor all of you as best as we can in several ways, ranging from a monthly bulletin column featuring two committees that will have an opportunity to briefly discuss their mission and the important work they do, to periodic committee-wide Alliyot on various Shabbatot, to a return to an idea from several years ago, the Volunteer of the Month. But we need your help on this front, as we need to identify all of those hard-working individuals. Please email volunteers@bethelnr.org and tell us about your committees, its chairs and members, and help us identify our Volunteer of the Month. There are so many well deserving individuals, and nobody can possibly know them all. Feel free to nominate anybody, give us a few reasons, and feel free to nominate yourselves. Honoring our volunteers is a labor of love for our committee, and we want your help. The Volunteer Committee

pours honest romantic content into this cynicism free relationship from the country's age of innocence.” - Nachum Mochiach, Habama “People should not think that the State of Israel came easy, that’s what this (play) is about–Pnina Gary

When Reuven (Doval’e Glickman, Shtisel), a surly mechanic, reluctantly takes in his exuberant adult son, Gadi, who has an intellectual disability, both men find their worlds changed: Reuven is determined to make up for his shortcomings as a parent before it’s too late, while Gadi finds himself needing to take care of his father in return. Their co-dependent bond will be tested by tribulations that prompt complicated ethical and legal questions with profound ramifications.

UNSETTLING, Thursday, July 25th, 7:30 pm Tekoa is a settlement in the West Bank, where none of the residents want to speak to the media. From the moment filmmaker Iris Zaki arrives from Tel Aviv, tension fills the air. She sets up a small pop-up film studio in the middle of Tekoa, and stays there for over one month in order to meet settlers. A simple intervention, which creates a complex chain of reactions from those who eventually agree to talk. From a woman who in the middle of an interview admits to being a fascist, to another who has survived a knife attack by a young Palestinian—and has forgiven him. 'Unsettling' was made by Zaki as a social experiment that highlights the contrasts and contradictions of the settlers' selfperception, but which does so by conducting a rare and active conversation with them. (Docaviv 2018) The honest surprising and sometimes funny conversations offer a fresh take on Israeli reality from both sides of the Green Line. “Unsettling challenges well-worn stereotypes about the other, leaving film-goers with a more complex story than they had expected.” – Sinai Abt, Kan PBC The film made the rounds in Israeli theaters and was then shown on Israeli public TV in November 2018 You really shouldn’t miss this!

An Unpretentious and moving film – HaHadashot 13 Audience rating – 8.8 on the Israeli website seret.co.il Winner of 7 Audience Favorite/Best Narrative awards at major US Jewish Film Festivals

AN ISRAELI LOVE STORY, Thursday, July 18th, 7:30 pm It’s 1947, just months before the State of Israel will be established. When 18-year-old Margalit, an aspiring actress from northern Israel, meets Eli (Aviv Alush, The Women’s Balcony), a passionate kibbutznik devoted to his work in the Palmach (Israel’s pre-state underground army) it’s love at first sight. But in a nascent nation in need of fierce protection, love can only take them so far. An Israeli Love Story based on the true story of theater director Pnina Gary and Eli Ben-Zvi, son of Israel’s second president Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. With sensitivity and simplicity Wolman weaves the love story between the two young idealists into the pivotal moments that gave birth to the state. He 3

RABBI’S MESSAGE I am profoundly grateful to our lay leadership for permitting me to make this type of commitment to my own learning and growth and for supporting these efforts. Sitting in a beit midrash with rabbis from every conceivable background is a unique experience that only Hartman offers. There are Reform and Orthodox rabbis in my cohort. Rabbis who grew up haredi (Ultra-Orthodox) wrestle with a hevrutah (study partner) over texts that challenge us to think creatively, pushing ourselves against our boundaries while simultaneously respecting the places in which there is no room to stretch. As the Jewish world implodes over the religious and political divisions that separate us into tribal thinking, we figured out how to study, pray, and spend Shabbat together. It wasn’t always perfect, in fact, it was often messy, but we discovered something holy in the desire to build a different community. We learned how to uncover the love, compassion, and unifying voices within our sacred tradition and history to guide us through this tumultuous moment of division and rupture in the Jewish world. As I sit in the institute this summer and relish the last ten days of study with a cohort of truly impressive rabbis from all denominations, I will reflect on the gratitude that I have for the gift of this fellowship. I will think of the ways in which Beth El enabled me to participate. And I hope that I have been able to bring some of the inspiration and engagement that I discovered in that beit midrash in Yerushalayim back to you and our community. I know that the Torah I learned over these past three years will continue to shape my rabbinate in profound ways. Thank you. L’Shalom,

Dear Friends, As I write this, I am preparing to leave for Israel for the conclusion of my three-year fellowship in the Shalom Hartman Institute’s Rabbinic Leadership Initiative. These years of study have been some of the finest of my life. The texts, Rabbi David Schuck scholars, and fellow rabbis have all been my teachers, and as I begin to process the end of the fellowship, the ways in which they have transformed my intellectual and religious life are significant. It is crucial for rabbis to set aside time for serious Torah study. Yet as important as this is, it has become harder and harder to do because of the professionalization of the rabbinate. Our jobs demand a deep knowledge of management, not-for-profit organizational leadership, staff development, and of course, the standard pastoral work that all clergy engage in on a daily basis. It has become extremely challenging for rabbis to make time for intense study, even though it is crucial if they want to serve their communities effectively. Many of my colleagues have either given up on doing this or accepted that their time to study is after midnight, and the consequences of this choice can be significant. Rabbis burn out from the endless hours and the emotional toll of the pastoral work, and without consistent learning to replenish our spirits and inspire us, it is challenging to teach and inspire others. Hartman afforded me the opportunity to immerse myself in high-level learning with brilliant scholars and colleagues, and this learning has been a source of rejuvenation for my intellectual and spiritual life.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I want to begin my first article as your president by paying tribute to our outgoing president, Mark Seidenfeld. It has been my experience that every Beth El president cares a great deal about the shul. Every president works very hard for all of us. And every president has unexpected curves thrown at him or her (although let’s try to avoid that in the coming year). But looking back on the last two years, Mark’s time in office has been extraordinary. He had an unusually large number of major issues to tackle—the sanctuary renovation, an 18-month Journey of strategic visioning, enhanced security concerns, a near complete turnover of our maintenance staff, a clergy search, and more. Mark handled each of these—as well as the ongoing daily operations of the shul—with efficiency, effectiveness, and grace. We all owe Mark a huge debt of gratitude. I thank him for his service, his support and guidance in the transition, and his friendship. And while he is entitled to some well-deserved rest, he should rest assured we will be calling on his talents and dedication in many ways in the years to come. It has become almost a cliché in modern organizational life to say that we are experiencing “a pivotal moment.” And yet, for Beth El, this truly is a pivotal point in time. We are pivoting from nearly two years of visioning and planning (referred to as Journey) to a time of action, where we are implementing the ideas that emerged from that strategic process. In short, we are turning our vision into action. Doing so entails substantial effort because our vision of Beth El’s future is lofty. But because we are committed to Beth El, we are committed to expending the necessary effort and we are doing so with intentionality and enthusiasm. What are our vision and our strategy? By now you should have received a trifold mailer that summarizes our mission, our vision, our fundamental principles, and the six pillars that constitute our “Framework for Strategic Action.” I encourage you to read this snapshot of our strategy. For those congregants who want more—and I hope that will be many of you—the full strategic report, which runs about thirty-five pages, is available online and in the synagogue office. For now, I want to call your attention to one of our pillars. We are moving to a culture of co-creation and co-ownership where our

professional staff and congregants work together to devise, plan, and execute our programs. This shift affords several benefits. Surely, at a time when we are looking to expand our programming and reach, co-ownership allows us to do more, given that our professional staff is already spread very thin. But more importantly, co-creation means that we will be engaging in programming that targets the expressed needs and wants of our community. This move will also be energizing, enabling individuals Mark Silver to become actively (or more actively) involved and invested in our shul community. A growth in voluntarism is a key aspect not only of this pillar but of our overall strategic direction. More than fifty congregants are already involved in our efforts. Some are members of our Vision Action Team, co-chaired by Nina Luban, which is spearheading our implementation efforts. Others are members of the teams that are focused on advancing individual pillars. And still others are working on “prototypes,” experiments with new or improved programs and activities. Hardly a week passes without someone joining the cohort of participants. This is your invitation to join those already involved in turning our vision into action. We foresee a future in which everyone becomes part of this enterprise. In the months ahead, you will be hearing about specific opportunities to become involved in the process. But if you don’t want to wait, email me now at msilver@ bethelnr.org and I will be happy to preview upcoming opportunities for engagement. These are exciting times at Beth El! See you in shul, Mark

Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, part of New York City’s Public Hospital System. In this role, Ellen has achieved strong analytical and strategic skills as well as significant leadership experience. It is these traits that Ellen will bring with her to the role of Financial Secretary at Beth El.

While the High Holidays are joyous occasions, celebrating the holidays can be difficult when they remind us of our loved ones who are no longer around our holiday tables or sitting next to us during services. There is a Jewish custom to visit the graves of loved ones who have died before the holidays. This year, we will come together as a community, have breakfast at Beth El, and then take a bus to Sharon Gardens and Mt. Eden to spend some time remembering those we loved and those who loved us.

Ellen and her family have made so many wonderful friends at Beth El Synagogue Center over the years and are honored to be part of such a welcoming and enriching environment. Volunteering at Beth El is an important part of family life for both Ellen and her husband, Rick, and they hope to lead by example for their children.

A group of volunteers do their best to keep the library neat and useful, but we could use your help. Here is how it works. 1) The library key is available in the main office. You may take out any books except those marked REFERENCE. The reference books may be used in the library only. 2) Please fill in your name on the card that is in the book, and leave it on the desk. Note: If you visit the library on Shabbat and opt to take a book home, please come back the next day to complete the card in the book! 3) Books should be returned to the basket in the library marked RETURN BOOKS HERE. If the library is locked, you can return your book to the wall hamper right outside the library. 4) Books which you look at, but don’t take out, should be returned to the spot where they were originally found. Fiction books are filed by author’s last name. Non-fiction books are filed by call number, which is written on the spine of the book. 5) At the present time, we are accepting donations of current fiction and non-fiction books on Jewish themes or by Jewish authors. These donations should be left on the desk in the library. THANK YOU AND ENJOY YOUR LIBRARY! 7

KERUV* KORNER Summer Musings on Keruv Summertime and the living is easy… After a hectic Beth El month of June, with graduations and new beginnings, Revelation and sanctuary re-dedication, the Kallah, Pride Shabbat, and the “Jew York Pride” parade, we all may be ready for a breather! I hope we are also all feeling proud of our richly diverse kehillah (congregation). Marching with Beth El and the Westchester Jewish Council in the Pride Parade under the auspices of Keshet*, I once again wore a T-shirt declaring, “I love Jews of all stripes and colors.” It’s a beautiful sentiment that reminds me of how diverse our community truly is. According to an article in The Jewish Week last month (6/7/19), recent Jewish population surveys “concluded that Jews of color have been systematically under-counted for decades,” and now represent 12-15 percent of American Jews. Isaac Rothstein, an Orthodox rabbi from a multiracial Lubavitch family is quoted saying that “he knows ‘many Jews of color who take their Judaism and religious life very seriously… I also know Jews of color who don’t go to synagogue because they don’t feel a sense of belonging.’ ” Of course, there are white Jews who avoid shul for the same reason, but Jews of color are more likely to face questions about their “journey to Judaism” or be asked outright if they are Jewish. Such questions may represent innocent naiveté or curiosity, but are understandably experienced as challenging an individual’s Jewish authenticity, as if to say, “You don’t fit in here.” At Beth El, “Jews of all stripes and colors” belong and need to feel that.

*“Keruv” = to bring close, to draw near

The Keruv Committee’s ongoing mission is to communicate and reinforce messages of inclusion. Our congregation includes Jews from all over the world, of every race, from every age cohort, with varied gender identities, with special needs and with special abilities, from interfaith families, from across the political spectrum and at every level of observance. We need the contributions of each and every one to remain a vibrant growing community. From the outset the Jewish people have been a “mixed multitude” and has been enormously enriched by our multiculturalism. Now more than ever we need to hear every voice. If you or someone you know is feeling marginalized, or have a suggestion as to how Beth El can be more welcoming, or have a question about what the Keruv Committee does, or fresh ideas for what we should be doing, please feel free to contact me. Better yet, join the committee! We will be having a summer planning meeting on Tuesday evening, July 30th, at Beth El. Like Beth El, our committee is large and diverse. DAY CAMP RECEIVES DONATION OF BONGOS

The Ruttenberg/Sherman family has generously made a donation to the Day Camp in memory of their beloved son/brother, Brad. Brad’s love of music resonates with each camper and counselor as we enjoy a summer of fun and drumming. We are most appreciative of their generosity and kindness.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS This year, in response to the needs of a number of our Nursery School families, Beth El once again offered a Mini Camp. This two-week program provided a helpful bridge between the end of school and the start of Beth El Day Camp. Mini Camp was structured as a half day program with a lunch option, and was unique in that

we had our 2s, 3s, and 4s all together in one group. The children engaged in extensive water activities, sand play, painting, and art experiences. The interfacing of the children in this multiple age group was a joy to behold. We have already put Mini Camp on the calendar for next June! Ronnie Becher, Director

YOUTH & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT A Note from the Director…

Mazal tov to the incoming Beth El USY Teen Leadership Board 2019-2020. A huge thank you to the 2018-2019 Board. So proud of all we did this year and can’t wait to see what’s to come!!

This summer is already off to an exciting start! We ended May with the Religious School’s End-of-Year Showcase for our Kindergarten to 7th graders enrolled. Here, we honored our 7th graders as they moved up into our teen program; and we inducted them into the USCJ’s Keter Torah Honor Society for academic excellence over an extended number of years. I am thrilled to announce that Lucy Casanova was given the Akiba Award as someone who has gone beyond our school’s requirements, working diligently to achieve a ‘personal best’ in Judaic studies, community service, and leadership. We also presented Lola Bernstein with the Mensch Award as someone who treats others with kindness and respect, considers her actions, and strives to do what is right in every situation, even when no one is watching. In early June, we elected a new Beth El USY Teen Leadership Board for the 2019-2020 school year! (see box at the top of the next column). We are thrilled to welcome the new board and wish them mazal tov. I'd also like to give a huge todah rabbah to the 2018-2019 USY Teen Leadership Board. We are so excited for what’s to come. We ended our school year with the Kallah: the Beth El Family Retreat, where over 100 community members and staff joined together for a Shabbat at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires. It was a weekend filled with friends and family, sunshine, learning, community, and so much more – what a great way to end the year. Though it is summer, we are already thinking about next year! We are excited to launch a new initiative for all of our 8th and 9th graders. On most Thursday evenings, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, we will offer a pizza dinner followed by meaningful conversations with Andrew Van Bochove, our USY Advisor, and other guest facilitators. Want more information? Contact Bekkah Gold! And don't forget to sign up for next year! Registration details are on page 15. Reminder: Please fill out the Summer 2019 Survey— bethelnr.org/ycsurvey—so we can be in touch with your children over the summer! Everyone who fills out the form will receive a handwritten note from us, and even may get an in-person visit from the Youth and Family Engagement team! If you have moved, changed schools, or have new email addresses or cell phone numbers, please email rgold@bethelnr.org or slederman@bethelnr. org so we can update your information. As you make new friends this summer, send them our way! Beth El members and non-members are welcome in the Department of Youth and Family Engagement! Have a wonderful summer, and feel free to pop in to say hello or grab a cup of coffee. You can reach me at 914-235-2700, ext. 221. See you soon, Bekkah Gold, Director of Youth & Family Engagement

BJCC Thanks Beth El for Post-Pesach Food Drive Donations

Welcome to the Beth El Community

Beth El partnered with UJA-Federation to collect food after the Passover holiday. Our congregants were once again generous with their food donations. We received this letter of thanks from the Bronx Jewish Community Center. BRONX JEWISH COMMUNITY COUNCIL, INC. 2930 Wallace Avenue, Bronx, NY 10467 Volunteer Department: Niti Minkove, Nminkove@bjccconline.org Dearest Friends:

The Sulman/ Less Family Of New Rochelle Philip Suman and Dara Less Raya Sulman, 14, Michael Sulman, 11

Thank you so very much for your most generous gift of an overflowing load of food from your amazing UJA-FEDERATION Post-Passover collection. The very generous donation went a long way to fill the shelves of our food pantry which regularly feeds more than 3770 meals each and every month. The folks lined up when the food was dropped off went all the way to the corner. Your generosity went a very long way to help alleviate hunger in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the Bronx. We are very thankful too for the core operating funding we receive from UJA. Your congregation has been a long and dear friend of our agency, and as usual this meaningful gift continues the tradition of supporting us in so many ways. We are so grateful for your friendship, and for the extraordinary way you share it with us on a regular basis. We wish you all peace, happiness and good health. We pray for a year of continued collaboration and doing good together. With warmest wishes and a toast to our long-time friendship, most sincerely, Niti Minkove, Director of Volunteers, Bronx Jewish Community Council 20
