In a Giving Mood? Suggestions for Giving to Beth El instead of the IRS! As the year end approaches, many people look for ways of combining their desire to do good with their desire to save on taxes. For the charitably inclined, there are strategic ways of giving that can help the giver and the receiver. Contributing to charitable causes before the end of the year is still one of the most popular tax-reduction strategies for people who itemize deductions. Tax laws currently in effect raise the income tax rate for highincome earners, making charitable deductions a more attractive option. Generally, if you itemize your deductions, making charitable contributions can decrease your tax bill, but the higher tax rates for high-income earners add an increased tax benefit for charitable contributions.
federal tax return—up to 30 percent of the donor’s adjusted gross income. No capital gains taxes are owed because the securities are donated, not sold. The greater the appreciation, the bigger the tax savings will be. MAXIMIZE YOUR CHARITABLE DONATION TO BETH EL SYNAGOGUE CENTER. Donate stock or other investments that you have owned for more than twelve months and are worth more than you paid for them. Donating appreciated stock creates a “double play” of tax benefits—a charitable deduction AND avoiding tax on the unrealized long-term capital gains of the donated property. Besides deducting their full market value, you escape the long-term capital gains tax that would have been due had you sold the shares. Contributions of stock or other property are deductible for 2018 as long as the gifts are completed by Monday, December 31st. For donations made with checks, you may count checks as deductions for 2018, as long as the payments are put in mailboxes in sufficient time for letters to be postmarked by midnight Monday, December 31st. Credit card payments for charitable donations qualify for 2018 deductions as soon as you authorize the charge. This holds true even if the credit card companies don’t bill you until 2019. Finally, if you want to donate to charity and you’re 70½ or older, you may want to look into a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). It’s a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian and payable to Beth El Synagogue Center, which counts toward your RMD for the year, up to $100,000. It’s not included in your gross income and does not count against the limits on deductions for charitable contributions. You can get the double benefit of the QCD, lower gross income and making a charitable contribution, even if you will be utilizing the new increased standard deduction for 2018. So, maximize your Charitable Contribution Deductions and related tax benefits by the end of 2018.
In the giving mood? Here is a strategy to consider that can help you make the most of your giving this year. GIVE APPRECIATED SECURITIES, RATHER THAN CASH. The donation of cash or check is, by far, the most common method of charitable giving. All things considered, however, cash donations are generally not the most tax-efficient way to give. Contributing stocks, bonds, or mutual funds that have appreciated over time has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reasons. Despite recent market gyrations, it’s likely your portfolio is filled with stocks that have appreciated over the past few years. Investors who give appreciated stock to charity avoid the capital gains tax on appreciation and can deduct the stock’s full market value at the time of the gift. Most publicly traded securities with unrealized long-term gains (meaning they were purchased over a year ago and have increased in value) may be donated to a public charity, and the donor can claim the fair market value as an itemized deduction on his or her

JOURNEY PROTOTYPE BOOTCAMP, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2, 9:00 am-1:00 pm Journey has landed!
Our board unanimously approved our strategic frame, a set of six “pillars” that will guide our work over the next several years, along with 4 core values, a mission statement, and vision statement.
What’s next?
We will be writing our strategic plan to provide a road map for how we move into our future together. And, we want to move to action right away by inviting you to launch experiments that move us in the directions of our dreams now. Join us for our Prototype Boot Camp at Beth El, Sunday, December 2nd.
What’s a prototype?
A prototype is an experiment that moves us in the direction of our dreams. It could be an initiative you’ve been thinking about for months or years, a spark of an idea, or something in between. OR, maybe you don’t want to launch your own prototype, but you want to be part of a team to help another prototype get off the ground.
Here’s what will happen at Prototype Boot Camp:
9:00 am-10:00 am Journey’s Landing: Come hear about Journey, where it has landed and direction it’s pointing for Beth El’s future. (If you want to hear this briefing but aren’t sure about prototyping, just come for the first hour, and decide if you want to stay longer.) 10:00 am-1:00 pm Boot Camp: A guided, experiential, fun workshop to help you think through your prototype, build it out, get feedback from others, and plan your launch. Your idea might morph, deepen, expand or change completely. You will have fun figuring it out. 2

RABBI’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, It is with profound gratitude that Tali and I extend an invitation to our entire congregation to celebrate our son Nadav’s bar mitzvah. We feel incredibly blessed to have been Rabbi David Schuck welcomed into this community with open arms, warmth, and lots of love. Serving this synagogue is one of the great privileges of my life, and celebrating our family milestones among you is itself, deeply gratifying. We believe that marking a bar mitzvah is more about modeling the importance of Jewish community for the child than anything else. To know that the community of people who nurture, support, and model Jewish commitment for Nadav will be able to celebrate this milestone with our family is a wonderful blessing to us. Please join us on Shabbat, December 15th as we encourage our son Nadav to take his obligation to mitzvot and our community seriously, and as we express our gratitude for reaching this moment in our family’s life.
it is with great excitement that we invite you to share our delight as

Open Beit Midrash Program Wins Gold Award at USCJ METNY Awards On Sunday, November 18th, the METNY Division of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ) presented Beth El Synagogue Center with a Gold Award for Adult Education for our very popular Open Beit Midrash program, run by Rabbi Zach Sitkin. Each month, classes are taught on alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays by Rabbi Schuck, Rabbi Sitkin, and Rabbi Linden. Once a month a scholar presents a topic followed by a discussion. At this same meeting, USY announced that their annual Gala, which raises funds for scholarships for youth to attend Encampment and summer trips throughout the United States and to Israel, would be held at Beth El on June 4, 2019. Among the honorees is Beth El past-president Marc Klee for his work as a lay leader.
LEARNERS’ SERVICE Shabbat, January 12th 9:45 am - 10:45 am with Rabbi Zach Sitkin Our community is diverse; people have varying degrees of knowledge about Jewish text, tradition, worship, and access to Hebrew vocabulary. Since Jewish prayer assumes a certain amount of background exposure and knowledge, this service is intended to create an access point into prayer for those who may feel lost and/or alienated from our typical prayer services. This service is an introductory exploration of the prayer service. Each prayer will be studied in depth and read in English to gain a basic understanding of its meaning and intent. We will discuss the basic physical mechanics of each prayer when necessary. It is our hope that over time, everyone in our community will be able to enter the sanctuary with confidence and feel at home.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE how our youth felt the desire to connect as a Jewish community and to come together for Shabbat services, responding with strength and comfort to the devastation of just a few days before. We had to open the back walls of our sanctuary the next morning as over 400 people “Showed Up” Mark Seidenfeld for Shabbat morning services. I sat next to a woman who came from Yonkers because she heard about our service and felt the need to be with her fellow Jews. While heartbreaking grief brought us together, it was a moving and uplifting experience. This past Shabbat, paraphrasing the words of Mr. Roger’s mother that have been cited frequently since the events in Squirrel Hill, Rabbi Schuck reminded us that in times of darkness, “look for the malachim, look for the angels”—the helpers who are the light that bring aid and comfort in times of crisis. The firefighters, policemen, EMTs, doctors and nurses who rush in to help. Our teens were helpers, our clergy and staff were helpers, and each one of us who came together to support one another were helpers. These were glimmers of light amidst overwhelming darkness. And as we celebrate Hanukkah and light the candles on our Hanukkiyyah, I hope we all rededicate ourselves to be helpers, to be malachim, and to bring light wherever there may be darkness. Marjorie, Talia, Michael, Jonah and I wish you a Happy Hanukkah and Happy New Year! See you in shul,
It’s been a difficult month. Squirrel Hill, Pennsylvania; Thousand Oaks, California fires; rockets from Gaza—it seems as though just as we’re reeling from one calamity, another tragedy strikes. Our heart breaks for the victims of the shooting in Thousand Oaks, the fires in California, and the rockets striking southern Israel. But Squirrel Hill cut to our core. A Conservative shul, in a suburb in a predominantly Jewish area with a deep sense of community, Squirrel Hill is New Rochelle, Tree of Life Synagogue is Beth El. The horrific act of a violent anti-Semite shattering Shabbat morning services and gunning down members of a close knit community that had come together to pray as a kehillah kedoshah (sacred community) hit us in the gut. It was a tragedy and heartbreaking loss for the members of Tree of Life and the Jewish community of Squirrel Hill, but it struck a nerve in the Jewish community in America in a way unlike the other tragedies. And of course, it has made us keenly aware of the need to ensure that we have appropriate measures, processes and policies in place to ensure the safety of our own community. Beth El’s Security Committee and staff have worked with the Department of Homeland Security, the Secure Community Network and other consultants, and we have always maintained a close working relationship with the New Rochelle Police Department, who are very familiar with our facilities and personnel. While we had police presence in the week following the Squirrel Hill shooting, when the likelihood of copycat incidents was highest, we have maintained private security guards in the weeks since then as an added precaution. Our teachers and staff have been through active shooter training and we will be arranging for another training session soon. As we have explained previously, we do not share all of our security procedures in order to ensure that it does not end up in the wrong hands. But be assured that staff and lay leadership take all security matters very seriously, and are working hard reviewing current procedures and discussing what modifications may need to be taken in the days, weeks and months to come. Responding with a focus on security is not the only way we’ve responded. I’m so proud that the day after the shooting in Pittsburgh, Beth El took the lead in organizing a gathering for the entire New Rochelle community. We were joined by Temple Israel of New Rochelle’s Cantor Randall Schloss, Sister Kathleen from the Ursuline Convent, and Judith Pinals from The Coalition for Mutual Respect. We were moved that 400 people came together for a community-wide service and prayer vigil that enabled us all to begin our healing process. A national effort to get people to show up in synagogues across the country the Shabbat following the shooting in Pittsburgh—#ShowUpForShabbat—reflected the resilience and commitment of Jews across the country to stand together, to support and comfort one another and to say hineyni, we are here and we will not let the anti-Semitic violence that wreaked death and loss stop us from remaining committed to our Judaism and to our communities. Under the leadership of Rebekkah Gold, our Interim Director of Youth and Family Engagement, Beth El teens quickly organized themselves, reached out to teens across Westchester and Rockland and brought 150 teens together for Friday night services to kick off #ShowUpForShabbat. I will never forget the feeling of walking in to shul that night, seeing our own Stephen Bartell leading services. and

illness, as do their families, friends and community. Statistically speaking, these figures mean that within our Beth El adult community of, let’s use the low estimate of 1,000 adults, 431 of them suffer from mental illness. And 42 of those 1,000 suffer severely. In my office of twenty employees, those statistics mean 8 or 9 suffer a mental illness, and perhaps one of my colleagues suffers severely. These numbers do not account for teenagers and children with mental illness, nor do they account for the family, friends, and community that suffer alongside the mentally ill individual. What does this have to do with Keruv? Everything. If there is only 1 individual, not 431, who desires to be part of the Beth El community and suffers from mental illness, our mission is to help secure inclusion. Last month’s meeting was a call to action and a task force is already identifying ways that the stigma of mental illness will be permanently banished from our community. If you are interested in participating on the task force, please contact Rabbi Schuck’s office to add your name and contact information to the list. And please stay tuned for further information about this from the synagogue. Nina Luban Elise Richman Keruv Committee Co-Chairs
Last month over 100 people gathered at Beth El for public discussion of a topic that is usually a hushed one: personal grappling with mental illness. In a room where the fidgeting was as still as the attention was rapt, two individuals shared their stories. The first explained the myriad of ways that lifelong bipolar disorder, diagnosed when in his 50s, had impacted, and continues to impact, his life. The second offered vivid, painful descriptions of her daughter’s thirteen-year battle with severe anxiety and depression. The stigma that usually surrounds such revelations was banished from the room that evening, and those listening who have not suffered, or lived with someone suffering from, an impairing mental illness were helped to understand the full breadth of its impact. The meeting at Beth El focused on two families. But how prevalent is mental illness across our nation? Figures from 2016 published by the National Institute of Mental Health tell us that among the adult (over 18) population of the United States, 43.1% suffer from “any mental illness,” that is a mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder ranging from no impairment to severe impairment. “Severe mental illness,” a subset of “any mental illness,” are disorders that impair, limit, or interfere with major life activities. In the United States, 4.2% of adults struggle with severe mental

Sisterhood Scene I’m writing this article just a few short weeks after our lovely, festive Paid-Up Membership Dinner. This year we had a larger turnout of members than in recent years. Around the Crystal Ballroom, we had tables filled with women of all ages, who sat together, broke bread together, and enjoyed each other’s company. Thanks to the lively music provided by Jack Klebanow, our members sang and danced around the ballroom with joy and spirit. The food was delicious and plentiful. We even had some extra food that Barbara Engelson was able to bring to HOPE Soup Kitchen the next day to share with the New Rochelle community. Throughout the evening all of the women looked happy and lots of praise was offered to our Membership Vice Presidents—Linda Resnick, Lori Schwartz, and Marcia Stern—and the Sisterhood members who helped put the wonderful evening together. Jack Klebanow was glad he came and enjoyed playing his keyboard and singing with us. I hope that we can repeat this success at future events. Right now, outside my window, the sun is sparkling and the sky is a beautiful shade of blue. The golden leaves on the trees are moving and swaying in the wind creating a lovely scene. But this view will soon come to an end as we enter into the month of December. The trees will be bare and the early darkness that we associate with the winter season will be upon us. It will be the time of year when we can come together with family and friends to enjoy the Festival of Hanukkah. Join Sisterhood, New Rochelle Hadassah, and Lori Weber on Monday, December 10th to sing the beautiful songs associated with the holiday and share a light lunch with the women of Sisterhood and Hadassah. December is also when the women who play Mah Jongg must remember to order their 2019-2020 Mah Jongg cards. When you order your cards through Beth El Sisterhood, we forward your information to The National Mah Jongg League. They process the order and in mid-March 2019 they will send your new card directly to you and all the people who ordered cards from you. The price of the card is the same wherever you purchase it, BUT, when your order goes in through Beth El Sisterhood, we get a thank you from The National Mah Jongg League in the form of a check. This is a painless way to help Sisterhood raise the funds it needs to support our ongoing programs here. Just complete the form on page 10 and send it to Arlene Salman with your check. National Mah Jongg League will do the rest. The final piece of exciting news for this month arrived earlier this week. Late last spring I suggested that Cindy Schechter, a Beth El Sisterhood member, submit some of her artwork to Women’s
League for Conservative Judaism for possible inclusion in the WLCJ Calendar Diary for 2019-2010. The two pieces she submitted were selected and will be the pieces for the months of April and May. The calendar diary will be available for purchase in the spring and I’m sure that many of our Beth El community will want to support WLCJ and Beth El and get their own copy. May the lights of your Hanukkah menorah illuminate your home and bring joy to you and your family at this festive time of the year. Hag Hanukkah Sameach, Risë Stern

Harry represented the Greatest Generation as he defeated the Nazis in World War II, became the first in his family to graduate college, led the exodus to the suburbs in Westchester, served for 40 years as a “Mad Men” in an anti-Semitic advertising agency, and retired to sunny Florida. His life is the subject of an interesting story. It reveals the message that we can all relate to Harry as an “every man” and take away insightful lessons on how to live and view our own lives in an era of struggle and discontent.

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS Our Nursery School is fortunate to have a number of specialists who enhance our curriculum in a variety of ways. Each Monday, Debra Steiglitz engages our children in “Americana Music.” Some of our favorite songs are Muffin Man, Tingalayo, Old MacDonald, and many more traditional songs that we are keeping alive. Debra brings instruments such as bells, rhythm sticks, triangles, and shakers to enhance the music experience. She also enhances vocabulary by using musical terms such as forte, pianissimo, and crescendo. Shmulik Gov Ari, the “Pied Piper” of Beth El teaches our Movement and Drumming classes. Shmulik, a world renowned Israeli choreographer and dance instructor, brings a truly unique style to his teaching. He captures the children’s minds and hearts as he brings them to an understanding of moving their bodies and listening to the rhythms of the music. In Shmulik’s classes children learn Hebrew vocabulary, dance steps, and self-regulation.
His presence in the Nursery School brings energy and vitality to our program. The importance of gross motor activities cannot be overestimated for young children. They need to move! Coach Steve engages the children in running, hoop and ball play, games, parachute work, and beginning skills for team sports. We are blessed in having large spaces such as the Crystal Balloom and the Fayer Ballroom where children can run with wild abandon and exercise their muscles. Gail Koller, our Science and Nature specialist fondly referred to as Teva Gail (nature specialist), visits with our Gezah and Anaf classes twice a month. Together they explore and learn about the natural world from a Jewish perspective through hands-on interactive activities. Some of the topics that Gail covers with the children are worms, mushrooms, water properties, insects, and tide pools. Our Outdoor Playspace has been an environmental delight for exploration of Gail’s activities with the children. In short, Beth El provides rich learning experiences both in and out of the classroom. We love learning together!
Once again, our annual Casino Night was a huge success! We extend a heartfelt thank you to Jessica Shatz for her tireless effort and the many, many Jessica Shatz hours, days, and months she put into spearheading this event. We also want to express gratitude to those who helped by serving on the committee. We know this event is truly a team effort and takes the support of many. Not only was the night a financial success, but it was wonderful to see so many from our Nursery School community, from Beth El, as well as friends and family from outside our community connecting with one another. This event was not just a home run, it was a grand slam! It’s worth repeating that the Nursery School deeply appreciates Jessica, our Board chair, and the entire team of dedicated parents responsible for this fabulous evening. Ronnie Becher, Director

YOUTH & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT A Note from the Director…
Looking forward to seeing you at our events this month!
Youth & Family Highlights
As the days get shorter and nights grow longer, I don’t know about you, but I can’t help but look for some extra light. Aspects of the past month have definitely been challenging as we have seen more acts of anti-Semitism, and it seems that a practical response is to look for ways to keep light in our lives. I like to look towards Hanukkah to find some light, to think about the miracles that have been happening for so long, and to pull on those threads for strength. Beth El is a pillar of strength and light for all of us, even in times of darkness. Through good times and more difficult ones, our doors are open to all, with programs catering to the wants and needs of our community. This month, we celebrated our community through our many events—rock climbing for Kadima, challah baking with our teens, Shabbat dinner for Kadima, Ruach and Chaverim Thanksgiving Celebration with Stephanie, and pumpkin carving with the teens. And, we promise to keep it going! We will keep you laughing during Comedy Night on December 8th and we’ll keep your kids moving during Ruach and Chaverim Hanukkah Celebrations on December 9th. More activities will follow in January with Youth and Family Engagement Shabbat Weekend, January 11th to 13th, and Emek USY Kinnus Weekend from January 25th to 27th. So, let’s keep on bringing light. This is a community I am proud to be a part of. Hag Hanukkah Sameach! Bekkah Gold, Interim Director of Youth and Family Engagement

Religious School New Dismissal Procedures
Beginning in September, we enlisted a new dismissal procedure for Thursday evenings after Religious School, happening between 5:40 pm and 6:10 pm every Thursday that Religious School is in session. Cars will enter the parking lot through the entrance closer to North Avenue (in the exit lane) on Northfield Road, looping through the parking lot and snaking up to the front entrance, picking up at the red doors by the Office of Youth and Family Engagement. Families are given color-coded cards for each of their children with their name and class listed. Parents or caregivers will hand one card to Stephanie, who will send someone to go get your child and your child will hand back the card when they enter the car. For those who would like to park, please use the second entrance on Northfield Road, further from North Avenue. Bekkah will be stationed there so that the path to the second and third parking are accessible to anyone trying to enter or exit the building. If you plan on leaving during this window, please Religious School Moadon park in the second and third parking lots. Please kids wrote cards to those who remember that it is dark at dismissal now, so look are sick. out for kids and adults alike in the parking lot. All December Religious School dates are listed (top right) for your convenience. We look forward to a smoother process and maintain that the safety of our children is our top priority. Thank you for your cooperation!
