RABBI’S MESSAGE But more important than the quality of the offerings is that we will be together—we will be with you in your home virtually and all together in a tent (for those who are comfortable attending a service in person). I believe that both options will be a jolt of encouragement seven months into this pandemic. This is the year that we have been practicing for in our spiritual lives. The work that we have done to be more kind, generous, flexible, and open-minded will pay off this year. That spirit will help us discover meaning on this holiday, especially this year, as we confront our own mortality and the preciousness of life. Our rituals and holidays strengthen us. We need that strength this year, and only we can summon that will-do attitude for ourselves. As much as we wish we could all be together this year in our beautiful sanctuary, I feel blessed to have found alternative ways to be together. I believe with my full heart that these vehicles for prayer and community will enrich our lives in new ways, so long as we work to be enriched rather than search for, and focus on, the inevitable flaws of what we create. This is true every year, but this year, it is especially so. I wish each and every one of you and your loved ones a Shanah Tovah, a year of good health and sweetness, wherever you can find it. L’Shalom,
Dear Friends, This year’s yamim noraim, High Holy Days, will be unlike any other that we have experienced. As much as we may wish them to be like last year’s, there is simply no way to do that. And yet, we are resilient. We don’t want to limit the number of people Rabbi David Schuck who make a shiva visit or not hug our grandchildren when we see them, but we are learning how to find workarounds. We are learning to accept the reality of the situation and trust that it will not always be like this, and that we have the strength to withstand the disappointments and struggles. This year I hope that we can adopt a spirit of openness as we think about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. However we end up spending them, in our home engaged by our virtual service, in our tent service, or perhaps in a neighbor’s backyard, let’s decide that we will make the best out of this challenge. We can choose to focus on the good—that we are alive and connected to a community that cares about us—or we can choose to focus on the disappointments. That choice is ours to make. And the truth is, it will be largest factor in shaping our experience. It always is. I am proud of the way in which we rose to the challenge. We have invested tremendous thought and effort into building something special, and both our in person and virtual offerings will be just that.
Rabbi David A. Schuck

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The High Holidays this year will be like none we have experienced. As I have participated in our internal planning, and conferred with leaders of many other synagogues, “surreal” is the only way I can characterize the upcoming holiday season. Tremendous effort has been put into our planning endeavors by many hardworking individuals. Much of the early effort was spent simply in deciding what we should do. I remember vividly one long and frustrating weekend following Mark Silver weeks of deliberations where we finally emerged in complete agreement. What did we agree? That none of us liked any of the plans on the table. I am sure that many in our community will share the sadness that this year’s holidays cannot be like those of the past and will not be ideal. Nonetheless, we have converged on a plan that we believe is in the best interests of the Beth El community, trading-off as best we could the many conflicting considerations and trying to provide a diverse set of meaningful opportunities for prayer, reflection, and community within the constraints of the current climate. Because the plan we chose is ambitious and multifaceted, intended to meet as many congregant needs as possible, implementing our plans has required a massive amount of effort by a large contingent of people. I want to thank the clergy, professional staff, and many, many congregants for their devoted efforts to making this year’s High Holidays meaningful and inspiring despite the challenging times. Wishing you and yours a happy and especially a healthy New Year 5781.
Dear Beth El Family, What a difference a year makes. Who could have imagined as we approached the High Holidays last year what the new year would bring and what an unprecedented and challenging year it would be? At this time last year, Beth El was focused on our newly formed Strategic Vision, turning that vision into action. We had so much positive energy and so many plans for the year and, at least for six months, we were on course for the year we had planned. And then the pandemic struck. It is tempting as we approach the end of the year to review how we at Beth El reacted to the crisis. But there is no need—and I have no inclination—to review here either the challenges we faced in dealing with the pandemic and its consequences or the many uplifting ways our community responded. We all experienced it first-hand and we have already said so much about it. I do, however, want to reinforce one message that has emerged: We as a community have been strong and resilient, adapting to the constraints of the situation, making sound decisions in the interest of the community’s well-being, finding innovative ways to come together and pray together, and, most importantly, supporting one another. Two of our core principles underlying our new vision are hope and optimism, and these have helped carry us through this dark and difficult period. As we approach another new year, the themes of the month of Elul and the Yamim No’raim (The Days of Awe—The High Holidays) are especially resonant this year. How can they not be? As we engage the liturgy, practices, and introspection that accompany this season, I suspect that many of us are asking the same thing: What will 5781 be like? Will it be better than 5780? And we are praying that it will be. While we do not know what the new year will bring, let us approach it with the hope, optimism, and sense of community that characterize Beth El.

TORAH AND HAFTARAH READING
As Beth El begins its reopening process, we are reenergizing our initiative to broaden congregational participation in reading Torah as well as chanting the Haftarah on Shabbat morning. Those interested are invited to sign up at https://www. signupgenius.com/tabs/63277df02a5c3ebc24-torahhaftarah. Please reach out to Alan Kellman (alan@twoals.com) for Torah reading questions or to Steven Cohen (SCohen@ kanekessler.com) for Haftarah questions. Cantor Schvartz (gschvartz@bethelnr.org) can help with preparing or learning how to read. 5
HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN HIGH HOLIDAY IN PERSON SERVICES In addition to our multifaceted virtual services and programs, we are pleased to offer our members an option for in-person services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. These services will be small, take place in an outdoor open-air tent, and have socially distant seating and protocols in place in order to provide for everyone’s health and safety. We will conduct a lottery to determine attendance at each service. For information on how the lottery system works and how to sign up, see below or visit www.bethelnr.org/HHlottery.
HOW TO ENTER THE LOTTERY
LOTTERY GUIDELINES FOR OUR IN-PERSON TENT SERVICE

KERUV* KORNER As we approach the High Holidays, the “Days of Awe,” we are encouraged to reflect on the past year and how we, not just individually but as a community, can do better. During this turbulent and stressful year in particular, we have had plenty of opportunities to reflect on how we can improve. Keruv—Inclusion—seems particularly relevant this year. For the first time all of us have experienced what it is like to be cut off from our community and our usual sources of comfort and spirituality due to circumstances outside of our control. Hours upon hours of tremendous effort have been required of our professional and lay leadership just to figure out how we can safely engage and fulfill our spiritual and ritual requirements together as a congregation. The daunting logistics of planning for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in years past pale in comparison… So it dawns on me, this is what it is like every year and all the time for families whose members have physical or emotional disabilities. Trying to anticipate barriers, figuring out feasible accommodations, troubleshooting unexpected crises, calculating whether the benefits of participating in activities outweigh the
*“Keruv” = to bring close, to draw near
potential risks and the effort demanded. The Keruv Committee has tried to help in small ways, offering buddies, creating a quiet room, but I know our efforts, while always appreciated, do little to lift the burden. This year, with so little known in advance, we have not been able to plan or support our congregants in the same ways. I honestly don’t know if the range of High Holiday options being offered this year are actually more inclusive than usual or place a greater burden on those who have unique circumstances. What I do know is that as a caring community, we want and need to include every one of us. As I write this I feel a pang of loneliness. I miss Beth El, I miss all of you, seeing you in person and wishing you a Shanah Tovah. However, we remain united in the ways that matter. Please write and let us know if there is anything Keruv can do to make the upcoming holidays, or your Beth El experience generally, more meaningful. May we all be written and sealed in the book of life! Elise Richman, elisekrichman@gmail.com Nina Luban, nina.luban@gmail.com Keruv Committee Co-chairs

TORAH FUND For many years, Beth El Sisterhood has been a dedicated supporter of the Torah Fund Project for Women’s League. We have raised money to provide scholarships and programming for five degree-granting seminaries in the United States, Europe, and South America. These programs educate the rabbis, cantors, teachers, scholars and other professionals in the Conservative movement. The graduates of these seminaries bring innovative programs to Jewish communities worldwide and preserve Jewish traditions. Your annual donation of various levels entitles you to receive an artistic pin, shown above, that will spark conversation and help spread the word of the important work of Torah Fund. This year’s Torah Fund theme is B’Yachad –Together. Our pride in being Jewish shows in everything we do in both our personal and professional lives, and we accomplish more together. Sisterhood Scene As the High Holiday season rapidly approaches, we Jews do not think of merriment and gaiety but of introspection and reflection. This year more than many others in the past, these themes need to direct our thoughts and our activities. We have in the past six months already zoomed until we don’t want to turn on the computer again. We have discussed until we are tired of talking. And yet, we are asked once again to look inward and re-imagine what a better world would look like with our increased participation in its development. How can we dream big in a time of societal upheaval while we ourselves may be feeling alone, scared and vulnerable. In the U’neh Taneh Tokef prayer of the High Holiday liturgy, we are reminded of the still small voice that can be heard when we silence the din of our world around us. That voice is God’s way of guiding us and helping us guide ourselves to a more meaningful life. Now, during the pandemic and the outpouring of concern for Black lives, we can hear the stillness more explicitly. What can we
do to develop this moral outreach? Our Jewish values can guide us through this difficult time and what this season demands of us. First, take care of yourselves. Laugh, listen and love. Cultivate your human connections through joining Sisterhood and keeping your family and friends “close.” Look for our interesting line-up of special events for the coming year. Second, join us as we develop new outreach programs. Want to help people get out to vote? We have a plan. Want to help our school community? Want to volunteer your talents on Zoom by reading to kids, sharing fun activities for at home students or tutoring local school children? We are working on that too. We need you and you need us. Together we can stay strong, work hard and stop to enjoy life all at the same time. Keep listening for the still small voice as the year progresses and as we turn to help build a brighter world. Keter Malkhut, the Kingly Crown, by Solomon ibn Gabirol (1021-1058) has been called the greatest Hebrew religious poem of the Middle Ages. Part of the Sephardic liturgy for the High Holy Days, its 40 stanzas incorporate the principal themes of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Join us as we explore ibn Gabirol’s take on God, the universe and humankind—taught by special guest, Rabbi Barry Kenter.
Sermon Sponsorship
“Who is honored? One who honors others.” Pirkei Avot 4:1 This teaching reminds us that our tradition has an ethic of honoring our loved ones. One way we do this is through teaching and studying Torah in their honor or in their memory. To celebrate someone marking a simcha or elevate the name and memory of a loved one, consider honoring them with your Beth El community by dedicating the weekly sermon in their name (sent out by email in the weekly Shabbat Announcements). The cost is $180. For information, visit.bethelnr.org/sponsor.
Learn the High Holiday Tunes Join Cantor Gaby Schvartz to learn the special tunes to sing along on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We will meet on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm, from September 2nd - 16th. Visit www.bethelnr.org/LiveStream for the link. Get in the High Holiday spirit!
Mishnah Class Rabbi Schuck teaches a Mishnah class on Tuesday and Friday mornings, 9:15-10:00 am. The class will study Masechet Makkot and all material will be shared via Zoom (no need to purchase books). This is not a drop in class. We ask that you make a commitment to consistent attendance. A minimum of ten people is required. RSVP to Zoe Raynes, zraynes@bethelnr.org.

DONATION POLICY
The way we handle notification of general donations made to Beth El is: We will only mail out acknowledgement letters for donations of $36 or greater made to our various funds. This is in line with common practice of other synagogues of similar size, and also yields administrative savings for Beth El. To donate, visit www.bethelnr.org/ donation. Note: This policy does not affect donations made to Sisterhood or the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund. Please use ShulCloud wherever possible to make your donations e l e c t r o n i c a l l y, a s t h i s y i e l d s administrative savings. If you have questions, contact Zoe Raynes at ZRaynes@bethelnr.org, or 914-2352700, ext. 228.
