HAPPENING "AT" BETH EL ONLINE Misheberach List
Beth El Memorial Page
Our Beth El website has a space to honor members and loved ones lost during these unprecedented times. Some who have experienced a recent loss have posted written reflections and photos of their loved ones for our Beth El community to honor and share in their memory. This website is password protected. Login to your ShulCloud account and visit bethelnr.org/virtualmemorial. If you need help, email Abby at awise@bethelnr.org.
At many of our services, and now at our evening Mishnah study, we say a prayer for healing for those who are ill. Any name added to the Misheberach list will be automatically removed after one month. If a name needs to remain on the list for another month, please reach out again to a member of the clergy.
Parent Support Group Tuesday, December 8th • 8:00 pm
“Who is honored? One who honors others.” Pirkei Avot 4:1 This teaching reminds us that our tradition has an ethic of honoring our loved ones. One way we do this is through teaching and studying Torah in their honor or in their memory. To celebrate someone marking a simcha or elevate the name and memory of a loved one, consider honoring them with your Beth El community by dedicating the weekly sermon in their name (sent out by email in the weekly Shabbat Announcements). The cost is $180. For information, visit.bethelnr.org/sponsor.
Sermon Sponsorship
The immediate focus of the group will be on supporting our children through the current crisis; moving forward, we will focus more specifically on parenting children with different needs in the context of the Jewish Community. The group will be led by WJCS social worker, Brenda Haas. This group will be limited to ten participants/ parent groups and will be added to the group in order of response. For the time being, we will meet via zoom. When it is permissible to meet in person again, we will arrange to do that. If you have questions, please reach out to Shayna Klopott (shayna.klopott@ gmail.com) or Brenda Haas (bhaas@wjcs.com).
Mishnah Class
Join us for a 10-minute Mishnah study with our rabbis following morning and evening minyan (*Friday evening's study will begin 15 minutes before Kabbalat Shabbat—timing varies due to Shabbat*). We will recite the names of our loved ones aloud before and after we learn, and then end each mishnah study with the recitation of a communal prayer together in their memory.
Visit bethelnr.org/livestream to see all of our upcoming events and to watch some of our past programs.

RABBI’S MESSAGE Though we follow all CDC guidelines to make the minyan as safe as possible, the pandemic has created an added challenge, as the number of people who are comfortable attending an in-person service has considerably diminished. Since June, we have prioritized rebuilding our minyan, but we cannot do this alone. By definition, we need your commitment. If you are comfortable attending our in-person minyan, we need you. Whatever time commitment you can make will make a difference. One minyan a week. Twice a month. Whatever it may be, it will surely make a difference. I want to stress clearly that I do not want anyone to feel pressure to attend our minyan if they are not comfortable with in-person services at this time due to health concerns. Until the pandemic comes to an end, you are welcome to join us on Zoom, and we love to see you there and daven together virtually. If you attend our minyan a few times a year on a yahrzeit, we need you more often. If you attended minyan during your time of mourning, we need you to ensure that when others need to say kaddish, they will have a minyan available to them just as you did. If you identify as a traditional Jew who believes that a synagogue should have a daily minyan, we need you to demonstrate that principled belief by joining us.
Dear Friends, One of the most meaningful (and challenging!) aspects of saying kaddish for my father was building each day around the need to find a minyan. When I had meetings that did not fit the times of our minyan, or if I was travelling, it took considerable effort to plan my day around locating a place to say kaddish. I certainly had some wonderful experiences finding a minyan in the most Rabbi David Schuck unpredictable places. I davenned with Bubover Hasidim on an airplane, through a door and next to a freezer in the refrigerated section of Seasons Supermarket, in the lone medical exam room in a tiny remote Palestinian village in Israel, and in the Shtiblach in Katamon, Jerusalem, where there is a Maariv minyan every fifteen minutes until midnight. I was keenly aware of my privilege as a man since many of these minyanim did not have a place for women (no mechitzah) and surely would not have allowed a woman to say kaddish. This experience amplified the incredible importance of a daily minyan that welcomes everyone. Our minyan is the only traditional egalitarian minyan that has three services each day in Westchester (perhaps throughout all of New York). I know that it has been a vital place of support for so many at Beth El who have needed to say kaddish as well as non-members. This is a source of pride for me, and I know it is for many in our community.
You will make a significant difference, even if that commitment is once a week or twice a month. We are also restarting out Shabbat Mincha / Maariv minyan, and we can use your help to sustain that minyan as well. You have a critical role to play in ensuring that anyone can comfortably say kaddish for a loved one three times a day, 365 days a year. Please join us whenever you can. Your presence is necessary and appreciated by all. L’shalom,
And, never before has it been more challenging to sustain our minyan and keep it vital.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE moving—and so many congregants told us they did—then try out our weekly Kabbalat Shabbat Service on Zoom. And if you are already a Kabbalat Shabbat regular, then maybe our popular Sunday morning Spiritual Singing Service is the next thing for you. Or maybe you want to broaden your Beth El horizons with our Open Beit Midrash. I could go on, but I need not, because this monthly Bulletin is replete with online programs that you might enjoy. You can also find the current Mark Silver list at bethelnr.org/livestream. Many of us have become creatures of habit during this pandemic. I am taking this opportunity to try to break-out of some of mine. Please join me! Of course, our staff and lay leaders cannot imagine every interest of our congregants. And, indeed, the Vision that emerged from Journey was one of congregants coming forward with their own programming ideas. So I want to invite you to message us at info@bethelnr.org with your ideas for new online programming to help us keep that programming fresh in the months ahead. If you have a passion or hobby, share it with others. And if you are looking to take up a new pursuit, let us help you find one, together with others in the community. In this way, may we enter the months ahead with renewed energy. With Hanukkah just a few days away, I want to wish everyone a Chag Urim Sameach—a Happy Festival of Lights. May the light of the menorah brighten our lives as we continue to engage in the process of finding meaning and inspiration.
Dear Beth El Family, Although I write these words shortly after Shabbat—a relatively restful Shabbat, at that—“fatigue” is nonetheless on my mind. When people speak of pandemic fatigue, they are referring to the dangerous tendency to be less vigilant over time in protecting ourselves and others from the spread of the virus. But I am feeling a different form of pandemic fatigue, and I suspect that many of you are, too. I have tired of the so-called new normal, which has become the same-old, same-old. My new behavioral patterns—working from home, ordering from Instacart, gathering on Zoom rather than in person, and so forth—which, for a while, became reassuring and comforting routines, have become stale. I am ready for a change. Hold that thought. I will return to it in a moment. But first, I want to talk about—you guessed it—Beth El. As I mentioned in my Kol Nidre remarks, the strength of our community has served us well during the pandemic. But Beth El was a strong and caring community long before anyone heard of Covid-19. Being such a community is an important part of our identity. And we are not just any community, but a community that enriches people’s lives. But I have begun to tire of repeating all this and you, no doubt, have tired of hearing it. So, it is time to shift the focus to a third key element of our mission statement, which characterizes how Beth El enriches our lives: Through prayer, learning, spirituality, culture, caring relationships, and connection with Israel. This is a long, but important list. Our rich and diverse set of online activities throughout the pandemic has addressed these many facets of our program. So, if you, like me, are tiring of your routine, perhaps now is the time to check out other aspects of our offerings. If you found our online High Holiday experience meaningful and

IN A GIVING MOOD? THIS YEAR
GIVE TO BETH EL INSTEAD OF THE IRS!
As the year end approaches, many people look for ways of combining their desire to do good with their desire to save on taxes. For the charitably inclined, there are strategic ways of giving that can help the giver and the receiver. Contributing to charitable causes before the end of the year is still one of the most popular tax-reduction strategies for people who itemize deductions. In the giving mood? Here are a couple of strategies to consider that can help you make the most of your giving this year.
30 percent of the donor’s adjusted gross income. No capital gains taxes are owed because the securities are donated, not sold. The greater the appreciation, the bigger the tax savings will be. M A K E A Q U A L I F I E D C H A R I TA B L E DISTRIBUTION FROM YOUR IRA— Finally, if you want to donate to charity and you’re 70 1⁄2 or older, you may want to look into a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). It’s a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian and payable to Beth El Synagogue Center, which counts toward your RMD for the year, up to $100,000. It’s not included in your gross income and does not count against the limits on deductions for charitable contributions. You can get the double benefit of the QCD, lower gross income and making a charitable contribution, even if you will be utilizing the new increased standard deduction for 2020.
APPRECIATED SECURITIES, RATHER THAN CASH— Contributing stocks, bonds, or mutual funds that have appreciated over time has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reasons. With recent market inconsistencies, it’s likely your portfolio is filled with stocks that have appreciated over the past few years. Investors who give appreciated stock to charity avoid the capital gains tax on appreciation and can deduct the stock’s full market value at the time of the gift. Most publicly traded securities with unrealized long-term gains (meaning they were purchased over 12 months ago and have increased in value) may be donated to a public charity, and the donor can claim the fair market value as an itemized deduction on his or her federal tax return—up to
MAXIMIZE YOUR CHARITABLE DONATION TO BETH EL— Contributions of stock or other property are deductible for 2020 as long as the stock gifts are completed and checks are postmarked by Thursday, December 31st. Beth El Synagogue Center does not offer tax or legal advice and encourages you to consult with your own professional advisors. 5

ISRAELI CULTURAL CONNECTIONS Presented by Beth El’s Israel Affairs Committee
Beth El’s Israel Affairs Committee (IAC) is pleased to share cultural items of interest concerning Israel each month. IAC always welcomes new members. For more information about meetings and events, please contact either Tamar Tait at TamarTait@optonline.net, or Bruce Gold at Bruces.gold@gmail.com. This month’s Israeli Cultural Connections column is presented by IAC member Deborah Olstein.
Contemporary Art Scene in Israel
A robust art scene has helped Israel emerge as a prime cultural destination. The rise of Israeli art can be attributed to not only the talent of the artists, but the increasing digitalization of the art world. Did you know that Israel has the highest number of museums per capita in the world? Most are in Tel Aviv, dubbed Israel’s “cultural center.” There are twenty art programs at the university level, graduating about 400 students each year. Among the most prestigious are Midrasha School of Art at Beit Berl Teachers Training College in Beit Berl, the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, and
the Shenkar College of Engineering, Design, and Art in Ramat Gan. Contemporary art galleries are flourishing in Israel as well. Video and photography are becoming very popular art mediums. Among the primary themes occurring in artists’ works include the land of Israel, war, home, memory, history, Bible, and increasingly gender, and cultural/political issues. So when travel is again an option and you are ready to visit Israel, do include art museums and galleries on your itinerary and see what is happening in the world of contemporary art!

KERUV* KORNER
In December we will read two parashot that resonate strongly with the Keruv Committee (and because of this, they have been mentioned here in years past). In Parashat Va-yeshev, Joseph, enslaved by Pharoahs’s courtier Potiphar, resists an attempted seduction by Potiphar’s wife. When the humiliated wife falsely alleges that Joseph was the perpetrator, Potiphar sends Joseph to prison. In prison, and in an apparent display of keruv, Joseph reaches out to two distraught prisoners, to ask what is troubling them. Their response? Bad dreams. Joseph interprets their dreams, advising one, a royal cupbearer, that he’ll return to Pharoah’s service and the other, a royal baker, that he’ll be executed. Both prophecies came to pass. Two years after the baker’s return to the royal palace, Joseph is summoned from prison to Pharoah’s chambers. Parashat Miketz explains that the cupbearer has remembered Joseph’s dream interpretation skill and brought him forth to interpret Pharoah’s dreams. Joseph’s counsel to Pharoah is wise, Egypt adequately prepares for a famine, and Joseph rises to heights of power. In
*“Keruv” = to bring close, to draw near.
addition to saving the Egyptians, Joseph saves his family, the family of Jacob, from extinction. What resonates so powerfully for us is that Joseph’s release from prison, elevation to power, and ultimate rescue of the Jewish future all began with a kindness—drawing near to two unhappy men and asking them about their troubles. Almost 4,000 years later, in our season of miracles, perhaps equally simple acts of kindness can and will carry such potency. The Keruv Committee wishes our community a happy, healthy season, pregnant with unexpected miracles.

May the upcoming Hanukkah lights shine brightly and make the coming days a little better for all.
We have just celebrated Thanksgiving, a most American holiday, and we continue to be burdened by the pandemic, which made that celebration so very different than in year’s past. Thanksgiving is synonymous with thanking people and is just what our committee is all about. When the Volunteer Recognition Committee began presenting its monthly spotlights on individuals and committees, who knew that the process would come to a screeching halt in the spring? While we are not going to return to honoring individuals for now, the Committee wanted to take this opportunity, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, to acknowledge so many individuals and committees that formed over the past nine months and worked tirelessly behind the scenes. We caution that we can’t possibly name all of the many volunteers, clergy, and professional staff members that went beyond the call of duty enabling Beth El to do remarkable things in the months since the building was shut down in March. This list doesn’t come close to doing justice to all of the participants. But, to all of you who were involved in one or more committees, please accept our gratitude. Here is the list; the number in parentheses represents how many lay people participated. Needless to say, Erica Leventhal and Mark Silver were “consultants” on several committees where they weren’t the official go-to persons. 7
Sisterhood Scene Light is what the holiday of Hanukkah is all about. Light brings a glow into the darkness of the winter solstice time with eight nights of candles getting brighter as the holiday progresses. Light brings awareness of the strength of the Jewish people when the Maccabees needed to overcome the burden of the Greek desecration of our holy Temple in Jerusalem. Light is what helps us be a part of something wonderful in Jewish tradition as families gather together, even if only by Zoom, to celebrate the joy and privilege of being Jewish in these troubled times. Sisterhood has worked hard over the past few months keeping us physically distanced but not socially apart. We have labored to revive and re-imagine what women can do together to keep relationships vibrant, refreshed, and important in our everyday lives. In October, we had a wonderful program in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month by collecting almost 175 bras for an organization called "Free
the Girls" which helps trafficked and abused women regain their dignity. We met Dr. Wiggy who helped us see how humor can be there as a support in times of illness. In November, instead of having our usual Paid-up Membership Dinner, we donated funds to help feed the needy in New Rochelle and sipped our Sangria as we took an in-person armchair tour of Barcelona and its Jewish community from 1492 until the present day. Now we are planning a fun latke cook-off for December led by our talented clergy, and a Jews in film course taught by a National Women’s league leader for our Cinema “Brunch” in January. Be a part of something wonderful and if you haven’t joined yet, do so! Contact Lori Schwartz, Oreomets13@yahoo.com, one of our membership Vice Presidents. Chag Orim Sameach – a Happy Hanukkah! NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS Who said that you have to be eighteen-years-old in order to vote? Our Nursery School children were deeply immersed in the entire process of Election Day and everything it represents. Besides discussing the Presidential election and all of the candidates, our classes conducted their own elections—favorite ice cream flavor, peppers or clementines, indoor play or outdoor play, worms or bees. Ballot boxes were created, votes were counted, and winners announced. We definitely are creating responsible citizens of the United States.

TORAH FUND: SUPPORTING JTS Each year Beth El Sisterhood members participate in preserving, promoting, and perpetuating Conservative/Masorti Judaism through active giving to the Torah Fund Campaign of Women’s League, which provides scholarships to the Jewish Theological Seminary and four other Conservative institutions around the world. Together our modest individual contributions help educate and train rabbis, cantors, Jewish educators and a range of other Jewish professional and lay leaders. In these challenging times, we at Beth El have experienced first-hand the outstanding level of dedication demonstrated by our clergy and lay leaders and its tremendous positive impact. Presented with formidable obstacles, Beth El’s leadership rallied all available resources and devised innovative opportunities to keep us connected together. Your investment in Torah Fund is helping to ensure the Jewish future for our children, grandchildren and beyond. Every Torah Fund donation of $180 or more will be recognized with this year’s Torah Fund pin (B’Yachad) to be issued shortly; however, a donation in any amount will be greatly appreciated.
