sailing

foreword

For many, Llanishen Reservoir is best associated with it’s long time tradition of teaching children and adults alike to sail. Hundreds upon hundreds of aspiring sailors have passed through the doors of the training cabin onto the safe waters of the reservoir, practicing and learning until they knew their luff from their leech. The influx of sailing talent began in the 1970’s after the reservoir ceased to provide water to the local area. This new potential opened a new world of leisure activities as the sailing centre would go on to provide tuition in windsurfing, kayaking and raft building to name but a few. This booklet serves to remind of the knowledge imparted over the many years of sailing at Llanishen. Use it as a refresher before returning to Llanishen again soon.

Anne Barrett Sailing Instructor

It is only recently that I have looked back on my time at Llanishen Sailing. Quite a long time. 26 years. From an absolute beginner to finally Principal I saw little Llanishen become the most successful and well respected Centre in the country. The students would go on to represent Wales, Great Britain and even bring home an Olympic medal. But its greatest achievement and sometimes battle was to make sailing accessible - a sport for all. The centre became a way of life. It was what I did and there was no room for anything else. Llanishen always came first. The privilege of working on the Reservoir and being able to share it was special. To have been part of a ‘community’, a ‘family’, where users and staff alike supported each other. To see the joy - the sense of achievement on the faces of the most unlikely. To hear parents tell you that because of Llanishen their child was now doing well in school and had gained in confidence. Seeing children who started with you at eight, become instructors, work for you, then go on to do great things in the ‘real’ world. I was at Llanishen at a time where it was possible to change things and make a difference - to create a special place - and somewhere that will not be forgotten. Llanishen was home!
