Strategic Plan approved to insure BT’s vibrant future Thank you for responding to our call to help chart BT’s future! We are pleased to announce that the Board of Directors at its December 1, 2016 meeting unanimously approved the Beth Tfiloh Congregation Strategic Plan 2017—2021. This initiative was undertaken in preparation for the Congregation’s 100th anniversary in 2021, and includes our new Mission, Vision, and Values statement, priority areas of focus, and action plans.

Son of Nava and Elliot Gorbaty Sat., Jan. 7. 2017 Aaron attends Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School and is the brother of Dani Falk, Daniel Gorbaty, Jonathan Falk and Andrew Gorbaty. He is the grandson of Chaim and the late Miriam Shamay, and the late Rabbi Aaron and Pearl Gorbaty. His hobbies include sports, building and being with his friends. For his Mitzvah project, Aaron wants to help children in the hospital with their math and he participates with Yachad, helping children with disabilities and adults.

Son of Amy and Amichai Katz Sat., Jan. 21, 2017 Gur attends Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School and is the brother of Miriam, Daria, Ye’ela, and Tamara Katz. He is the grandson of Yona and the late Miriam Katz and Susan and David Addleman; and the great-grandson of Betty Joseph. His hobbies include playing and watching sports of all kinds, being with friends, and playing on the X-Box. Gur came to BT from Israel in September 2015 as a son of the shlicha, and has adapted to many new experiences here in America. He learned to navigate a different culture with a new language and has succeeded nicely with the support of his teachers and friends. Gur feels deeply attached to the BT family, and would like to maintain this strong connection when he returns to Israel at the end of this year.

Remembering Camp Director, Steve Eller Beth Tfiloh sadly announced the loss of one of its iconic professionals last month, with the passing of Steve Eller, who served as camp director from 1972 to 2007. Following a career of several decades as a devoted educator in the Baltimore City Public School system, Steven brought his love for children and passion for camping to Beth Tfiloh Camps. Steve’s work included lobbying for laws that impacted camping, and he was actively involved on the national camping scene, through his efforts on behalf of the American Camp Association. In his 35 years as camp director, Steve’s vision and dedication to excellence contributed to Beth Tfiloh Camps becoming one of the area's most successful day camps, and a great place for kids to grow.

To My Jewish Day School Education By Molly Bookoff ‘16 The article below was originally posted on The Odyssey blog at www.theodysseyonline.com/open-letter-jewish-school was given an equal chance to learn, grow, and succeed. Although this system stands in stark contrast to how typical athletic organizations function, for my school, it worked. We learned to value hard work, camaraderie, and having fun. Winning was rare, but this taught us to appreciate even the smallest of victories.

Lastly, thank you for preparing me for college.

For 18 years, from the earliest days of “mommy & me” all the way up until high school graduation, I attended a small, Jewish day school in the suburbs of Baltimore, MD. Contained within a seemingly un-poppable bubble, I spent long days, specifically from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., learning about Jewish holidays, hearing stories from the Bible, and studying the many laws that constitute Jewish life. All of this, on top of taking math, english, social studies, and science classes.

basketball tournament and everything in between, we always united to celebrate as a school. On the opposite end, in times of sorrow, whether it be the death of a family member or that of a soldier in Israel, we always joined together to pray for comfort, peace, and health in the world. Looking back, I appreciate these moments for what they were, and know that I will always be a part of a special community.

At times I longed to switch to a regular school, one where I could be dismissed from school at 2:30. Every. Single. Day. And one where I wouldn’t have to endure these classes that seemed so trivial at the time. But my parents would not even dream of letting me weasel my way out of what they believed to be an important experience. So I continued my Jewish day school education, and looking back on it, I realize just how right they were.

Throughout my years, you taught me some essential components of what it means to be a Jew: that I should care for others, strive to be the best version of myself, and live each day with meaning and purpose. You also gave me Israel, a beautiful country filled with incredible people, a rich history and culture, and an everlasting spirit. These ideas are now ingrained into my being; without them, I would not be who I am today.

Sitting in my dorm room, 1,123 miles away from home, in a new school and a new city, I just want to say to my Jewish Day School:

Thank you for showing me what it means to be a community.

During times of happiness, from special Jewish holidays to winning the annual 6

Thank you for fostering my love of Judaism and Israel.

Thank you for teaching me that winning isn’t everything.

The sports at my school could be classified as anything but serious. In the entire span of my athletic career, I witnessed only two occasions where players were cut. 99.9% of the time, everyone made the team, and everyone

You might be thinking, how could I have been prepared for college by living in a bubble for my entire life? Yes, it is true that my life predominantly existed in this Jewish bubble, and that my friend group consisted mainly of people just like me. But my Jewish Day School education equipped me with the necessary tools to succeed not only in college, but in life. Tools that I don’t think I would have received anywhere else. From it, I’ve learned to treat people the way that you want to be treated. I’ve learned to believe that everything happens for a reason, and to trust that things will be okay in the end. And lastly, I’ve learned that each day we have on this earth is a gift, and that we should not merely sit back and appreciate it, but take advantage of each moment to ultimately live a meaningful life.

So thanks again, for the bagels, for the 8 hour school days, and for the lessons. Molly Bookoff is a 2016 graduate of Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School. She is currently a freshman at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

School News CHUMASH PROGRAM: Mazal tov to our second graders, who received their first real chumashim at the Chumash Program. Todah rabbah — thank you — to Mr. Searle and Mrs. Deborah Mitnick, who endowed our Chumash Program, providing the resources for both the program and the chumashim for many future generations of BT second grade students.

GIRLS’ STEM DAY: Eight BT High School juniors and seniors participated in the University of Maryland's second annual STEM Event for Young Women, coordinated by BT parent Dr. Rena Lapidus, director of University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Translational Core Facility and an associate professor of medicine.

SINGING IN SPANISH: Mrs. Lesser's High School Spanish class taught Saco Una Manito (“I Take Out One Hand”), a Spanish children's song, to Mrs. Hercenberg's Kindergarten class and Morah Mekenzie and Morah Giselle's 3's.

Development News Giving Tuesday The Tuesday following Thanksgiving has become a national day of giving known as Giving Tuesday. This year, in true BT fashion, we saw our community come together on Giving Tuesday to show its support for BT in a very big way!

THANKSGIVING CONVOCATION: At the Thanksgiving Convocation, alumni brothers Josh Chinsky ’01 & Ben Chinsky ‘04, both of whom have served in the American military, shared this advice with our students: “Find a mentor, be a good friend and dream big.”

BT ALUMNI ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME - A highlight of Alumni Weekend was the induction of the 2001 Championship Girls Varsity Basketball team into the BT Athletic Hall of Fame.

One hundred and fifty Beth Tfiloh families and alumni donated to BT’s Annual Campaign on Giving Tuesday. We are thrilled to report that we now have over 900 families who have donated to the Annual Campaign, bringing us more than halfway to our goal.

Following lunch we will be treated to a musical performance by an a cappella group and hear a provocative debrief by our amazing BT Shelichim, Haggai and Miri Lavie, Amy and Amichai Katz, Gal Yossef and Leon, moderated by Rabbi Posner. We will hear how they see the American/Israeli relationship, what they believe they have brought to BT and what they will take home with them. While we enjoy the panel, children will practice a new song with our a cappella group and sing it for us over dessert.
