Memorable Milestones: A BT Bat Mitzvah As BT celebrates a record number of Bar and Bat Mitzvahs in the 2019 calendar year, Bat Mitzvah girls and their families are availing themselves of a number of meaningful options for marking and personalizing this important milestone. Girls have various opportunities to both individualize the service, and find meaning in the day. A typical BT Bat Mitzvah takes place on Shabbat morning, with girls reading from the Torah or chanting a selected Haftarah. The Bat Mitzvah gives a D'var Torah, after working with Mrs. Janet Weisenfreund to polish its delivery. Each girl is assigned an individual Bat Mitzvah tutor. This year's tutors have been Rabbi Chaim Wecker, Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe, and Stan Lustman.

the rabbi, a parents' prayer, and the opportunity to lead certain prayers and obtain aliyot. All B'nai Mitzvah also undertake a Mitzvah Project and attend special family programs with our rabbis during the months before their big day.

SHABBAT HIGHLIGHTS

Jayme and Courtney Wood recently celebrated their daughter Skylar's Bat Mitzvah. "The most meaningful aspect was watching Skylar's ability to put together all of her hard work. The program has many facets — weekly practices, the writing and Register comprehension of the Parshah and the Online by overall presentation the day of the Bat Mitzvah. It was a proud moment for

Meet Our Members Melinda and Mike Levin Melinda and Mike Levin were introduced to Beth Tfiloh by her brother, BT School parent Darren Weiss, who recommended the day school as an option for their son, Eli. The Levins, who were living in Columbia, Maryland at the time, toured the school and instantly fell in love with BT. “We knew it would be a perfect place for our new kindergartner and we decided it would be worth sending Eli on the van from Columbia in order to attend Beth Tfiloh,” said Mike. “A year later we moved to Pikesville and our daughter, Sofie, began attending Beth Tfiloh as well.” Before they relocated to Pikesville, the Levins toured several shuls in the area, searching for “the perfect fit of traditions and rituals for our family,” said Melinda. “Growing up, our congregations were a big part of our families’ daily lives and we wanted to find something similar to help instill Jewish values and identities with our children. We came to BT congregation several times for holidays, weddings, and Shabbat

Mike and Melinda Levin, Sofie and Eli

services and would talk for days after about how much we enjoyed the time and experiences. There truly weren’t any other shuls in the area that could compare to what BT had to offer our family.” The Levins’ love of BT has spread to their entire family. Their parents also fell in love with the synagogue and have since become members; their children “feel at home and love going to Beth Tfiloh for school, Shabbat and holidays.” Melinda, who is a child development specialist for Montgomery County

Infants and Toddlers in Silver Spring, gives back to the BT community by serving on the Synagogue Life Committee. Michael, a CPA who works as an auditor at the Department of the Treasury's Office of Inspector General in Washington, DC, says that Eli ’29 “loves all things baseball and plays as much as he possibly can,” while Sofie ’32 “is a big fan of yoga and helping take care of her baby cousins.” The Levin family likes to spend time with their extended family here in Pikesville and out in Seattle, cheering on the Washington Nationals, trips to the beach and pool. Of course, they love coming to BT on Shabbat and attending Shabbat services, Mini Minion and Kid Cong. Melinda shares a couple of their favorite BT experiences…so far: “Being in the audience with Eli’s grandparents and sister for the First Grade Siddur Program and getting to see how proud and excited Eli was. We also love seeing our kids on the bimah for the conclusions of Shabbat services.” Look for the Levin family next Shabbat at BT!

Alumni Association News BT Alumni Weekend 2018 There are thousands of reasons why Beth Tfiloh is so special to each of us. Whether it’s the lifelong friendships we made, the Jewish identity that we fostered as students here, or the roles that our teachers played in helping us explore our intellectual strengths, BT has, and always will, support us. These are just a few of the reasons why alumni from all over the country come back to celebrate alumni weekend with Beth Tfiloh. This year, Alumni Weekend was jam-packed with Our Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony, honoring Harry Auster ’05, a delicious brunch connecting recent alumni with their BT teachers, the annual alumni basketball games, a Thanksgiving inspired Shabbat schmooze and milestone reunions for the classes of 2013 (5 year reunion), 2008 (10 year reunion) and 2003 (15- year reunion).

Development News Spotlight Honoree Wall dedicated Beth Tfiloh recently unveiled an exquisite Spotlight Honoree Wall. The wall pays tribute to some of Beth Tfiloh’s most loyal and generous donors who have been honored at the School’s Annual Spotlight Scholarship Event. In addition to featuring photographs of each of the honorees, the wall pays tribute to their unwavering commitment. The inscription on the wall reads: "We take tremendous pride in our list of outstanding Spotlight honorees, each of whom believe deeply in Beth Tfiloh’s mission to provide a Jewish day school education to as many children as possible. Our Spotlight honorees represent the best of Beth Tfiloh. Each of

them shares the values that are so deeply engrained in our school community: Tzedakah (Charity), Hakarat Hatov (gratitude) and Derech Eretz (Respect).” The wall features a beautiful piece of artwork, entitled “After the Darkness” by Charles Fazzino. The artwork is a compelling look at the life and the hope that arose from the ashes of the Holocaust. The artwork was generously donated by the Natanzon Family, who, like with all of our Spotlight Honorees, are firm believers in Beth Tfiloh's mission to ensure our collective Jewish future. The piece reflects the perseverance of the Jewish people and the transformation of our ancestors into proud and knowledgeable Jews and Zionists.

Synagogue News Unity Shabbat to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. To honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Beth Tfiloh will have a special Shabbat service on Saturday, January 26, featuring a presentation at the conclusion of services by Reverend Dr. Terris King, pastor of Liberty Grace Church, and members of his church choir. Reverend King will offer words of inspiration and will be followed by a musical presentation by members of the Liberty Grace Choir together with our Beth Tfiloh student choral groups. The groups will be rehearsing with BT's Mr. Brian Singer during the weeks prior, and we anticipate a very moving and meaningful musical tribute. Dr. King and Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg have developed a special partnership over the past several years. Last fall, Rabbi Wohlberg was the keynote speaker at Liberty Grace Church's 40th annual Day of Unity. For a video of Rabbi Wohlberg's speech and media coverage of this event, visit www.bethtfiloh.com.

HALLEL FOR HER - The women of BT welcomed women from Netivot Shalom for a spirited and meaningful Rosh Chodesh and Chanukah Hallel and Torah service led by Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe with beautiful guitar accompaniment by Karen Goldberg and MayaTaylor.

both Skylar and her family to watch it all come together," reflected Jayme. An option some girls elect to add is a Shabbat afternoon women's Mincha service, which can be conducted by the girl and or family members, including Torah leyning (cantilation) by the girl herself or with participation by female guests. This provides girls with the opportunity to learn how to lead a women's tefilah and Torah leyning. "It has been tremendously moving to see women of several generations having aliyot," says Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe. "The ruach at these services has been amazing." Abby Weinstock and Shawn Sefret celebrated their daughter Shayna's Bat Mitzvah this past fall, with Shayna choosing to lead a Shabbat afternoon women's mincha service in addition to her Shabbat morning Bat Mitzvah. " I really appreciated that Shayna was able to leyn her Torah portion at a Women’s Mincha Service, and that she had the

JANUARY 2019 A TEVET-SHEVAT 5779 opportunity to serve as the Hazzanit for that service as well. That was particularly meaningful to her," said Abby. All B'not Mitzvah work with one of our rabbis, meeting several times to work on their Dvar Torah and learn the meaning of their parasha. In addition to the monthly family programming with the Rabbis (including such topics as the significance of their Hebrew birthday on the Jewish calendar, and researching their Hebrew names and who they are named for), the children also participate in community service projects to bond as a group and give back to the community. Similarly, parents in the B'nai Mitzvah group often bond together and use each other as resources during the planning process. In addition all B'nai Mitzvahs occur Shabbat morning to enable families share their simcha with the whole BT Synagogue Family, including a special Kiddush following services. "The Bat Mitzvah is an opportunity to help our girls connect with their

Judaism from a place of inspiration and meaning," Rabbi Chai Posner emphasizes. "We want our B'not Mitzvah to feel confidence, pride, and joy as young Jewish women in the 21st century." For information about the Beth Tfiloh Bar and Bat Mitzvah program, contact Eve Kresin Steinberg, Executive Director.

Security Committee update The Synagogue and School Security Committee continues to meet regularly to review recent changes in the Security Plan and to identify steps to further increase the security of our school and congregational family during the week and on Shabbat. We acknowledge that some of these measures may cause personal inconvenience, but are necessary for the safety of the Beth Tfiloh Family. Please note that the only entrance that is available on Shabbat is the main Sanctuary Entrance.
