Students and Faculty Honor Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Memory & Mission BT students of all ages commemorated the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a variety of collaborative, creative and thought-provoking programs.
• “I Have a Dream”: Dr. King’s historic speech at the March on Washington, through the lens of rabbinic thought and Tanach, by Rabbi Mordechai Soskil
Both first and fifth graders analyzed Dr. King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech to better understand his vision for changing the world and and then partnered to create collages that expressed their own dreams. Fourth and eighth graders respectively studied Parshat Bo and the lyrics from “Go Down Moses,” then joined together to discuss the similarities and differences between the Jewish exodus experience as depicted in the Torah and that of the US abolitionist and civil rights movements. Using the eighth graders’ iPads and the PicCollage app, the teams created visual representations of the comparison.
• Hopes and Dreams in Israeli Songs, by Mrs. Aimee Katz
High School students participated in two sessions of workshops relating to Dr. King’s teaching. A highlight of the day was an inspiring panel discussion with Reverend Richard Mosley of Road to Damascus Ministries, Reverend Dr. Bernard Keels, Director of the University Memorial Chapel at Morgan State University, and Rabbi Etan Mintz, BT Judaic studies teacher and rabbi of B’nai Israel synagogue. The three shared their personal journeys to becoming men of God and how they are personally building upon

Focus on Philanthropy Miller Family Dedicates the Lower School Playground Mitzvah gedolah, le’heyot b’simcha tamid. - “It’s a great mitzvah to be happy always!” -Rebbe Nachman of Breslov Disney World may call itself the happiest place on earth, but we know the truth. The happiest place on earth is really the Beth Tfiloh Lower School playground. That’s why Wendy and Jeff Miller chose to dedicate the playground when making their gift to the Chazak Campaign — to ensure that the happiness their children enjoyed as BT students, as symbolized by that playground — could be experienced by many other Jewish children for generations to come. Their generous gift is infused with the simcha, or joy, that the Miller family brings to every endeavor, embodying the words of Rebbe Nachman. The Millers’ connection to BT began when a former BT PreSchool teacher
who was a close family friend told them “it was the best PreSchool in town and we must choose to send Josh. The rest is history,” exclaims Wendy. “Our children were already so happy and thriving in the PreSchool, making wonderful friends and learning wonderful Jewish values at such a young age. We wanted them to continue on their path of learning in a nurturing environment and attain lifelong Jewish values.” The Miller children had many joyous milestones throughout their education...with their parents cheering them on every step of the way: watching a “most memorable” senior class movie, produced by the entire class of ‘06 under Josh’s direction, in a packed High School theater — Josh’s favorite High School memory; the thrill of cheering Continued on page 10

Alumni News BT Alumni taking the lead on college campuses We are extremely proud of the impressive number of BT alumni who have taken a leadership role on their college campuses. Here is an update from a few of our recent graduates.
LIFE AFTER BT - BT alumni Mitchell Traub ‘14, Miriam Pomerantz ‘13, Lindsay Hurwitz ‘13, Josh Schwartz ‘15, Danny Gross ‘14 and Seth Sholk ‘15 spoke to our seniors about their adjustment to college and “life after BT.” Issues discussed included the challenges of living on campus, Jewish life, making the most of extracurricular activities, time management, advocating for Israel in light of BDS movements on campus, balancing their academic workload, and the benefits of gap year experiences prior to college.
ALEX COHN ‘14, University of Pennsylvania: I graduated from Beth Tfiloh in 2014 and I am now a sophomore at Penn majoring in Political Science. Outside of the classroom, I’m involved in a few clubs Continued on page 11

on Adam ‘08 and the rest of the Varsity Tennis team as they worked together to bring a championship trophy home to BT; seeing 6 year-old Erin ‘12 play young Eponine in the High School’s first production of Les Miserables; and, of course, each of their children having a most meaningful senior trip to Poland and Israel, which Adam notes was his favorite High School experience. BT is more than just a school for the Miller family. “BT was our true partner in parenting!” shares Jeff, expanding on the many ways Beth Tfiloh shaped their family’s Jewish connection: “We learned Jewish values as our children were learning. We learned about derech eretz and tikkun olam. We were given opportunities to share holidays with our family and friends like only children at Jewish day school can experience. Nowhere is Purim more fun for kids and adults than at a day school, and particularly at BT. We started having weekly Shabbat dinners and baking challah because of our inspiration from the clergy and teachers at BT.” BT is more than just a Jewish day school and synagogue to the Miller children. “It is more of a community and a family with long lasting relationships,” says Adam. That’s especially true for Josh, who met his fiancée, Abby Levitsky ‘06 at BT. For Erin, BT means “having important Jewish and community values instilled in me. Through walking the halls of BT as a student, to revisiting them as an alumni, I feel embraced and celebrated for who I am, and a part of a community larger than myself.” While the Millers have received so much from BT, they have given back considerably, chairing Spotlight, Beth Tfiloh’s annual Scholarship event, and serving on the Synagogue’s Board of Directors. Additionally, Wendy served on the School’s Board of Trustees and Parent Association board, co-chaired the America Cooks Kosher cookbook project and the Chazak Campaign’s marketing committee, among many other leadership roles. Other Jewish communal organizations are fortunate to benefit from the Millers’ expertise, commitment and generosity, including 10
The Associated, the Jewish National Fund (JNF), and Israel Bonds, among others. But others are also benefitting from the Millers’ communal involvement: their children are learning the meaning of leadership from the example set by their parents. “I feel very proud to have parents who support BT and the Jewish community as a whole,” comments Adam. “They are true role models to me, and I aspire to be as philanthropic as they are one day.” That journey has already begun through Adam’s support of the BT Alumni Campaign. “I feel that being part of a Jewish community and having a strong sense of Jewish values in today’s world are so important for young Jews,” he explains, noting that BT instills both of those in “every one of its students.” Adds Josh, who stays connected both through his support of the Alumni Campaign as well as through participating in Alumni Association events, “Mostly all of my tight-knit class is in touch with each other — and this is coming from someone who lives on the
other side of the country!” “My brothers and I often talk about how people who went to BT have a certain sensitivity to others and selflessness,” expresses Erin. “Because of this, I feel a sense of gratitude to this place that introduced me to such quality friends, teachers, and role models.” That gratitude inspires Erin to support the BT Alumni Campaign, like her brothers. That same sense of gratitude is the reason for the Miller parents’ steadfast support of BT. “Very simply, it is our way to say thank you for what BT has done for our family,” expresses Wendy. “Our dream is for BT to educate many more generations of children in our Baltimore Jewish community that we are so blessed to be part of. And, we also hope our gift will inspire others to give a gift of gratitude!” To make a meaningful gift of your own to Beth Tfiloh, contact Mandi Miller, Director of Development, at 410-413-2399 or mmiller@btfiloh.org.

including Penn Mock Trial, the Penn Political Coalition (PoCo), and the Penn Israel Public Affairs Committee (PIPAC). I am an executive board member on PIPAC, the largest proIsrael advocacy group on campus, and as the education coordinator, I am responsible for coordinating monthly seminars featuring speakers and discussion panels, maintaining a weekly newsletter of Israel-related events and news that is sent to hundreds of people associated with the Penn community, and improving our PIPAC Google Drive, which has dozens of fact sheets on a variety of topics related to Israel. In essence, I help further educate PIPAC and the Penn community at large about Israel. My time at Beth Tfiloh has definitely provided me with the foundations for my leadership role at PIPAC, especially through my experiences with Israel advocacy and education, even beginning in Middle School and culminating with the senior class trip to Israel, the roots instilled in me for advocating on behalf of Israel began early at BT. I found it very important to remain committed to this cause at Penn, especially after leaving BT where doing so came naturally. JENNIFER MILLER ‘15, University of Maryland - After attending Jewish day schools my entire grade school career and becoming increasingly passionate about Judaism and Israel, ceasing my Jewish education and community involvement seemed frivolous. The University of Maryland has such an incredible presence of Jewish students, many of whom are committed to making Jewish life and Israel advocacy vibrant at the University. While being in close quarters with 40-plus other students in a dorm may scare some, I’ve found it a great way to meet other people outside of the classroom. I attend Hillel events as often as I can, and Maryland’s massive, thriving Jewish community definitely holds a huge presence there. I’ve also become involved with Terps for Israel (TFI), the University of Maryland’s largest and most powerful pro-Israel group on campus. Through

this organization, I’m an op-ed columnist for The Diamondback, the school’s student-run news publication. Staying committed to both Jewish and Israelrelated organizations post-BT has been my way of bringing a bit of home to College Park. DALIA BAUMAN ‘14, University of Maryland - Chair of Business Development for the National Hillel Basketball Tournament (NHBT) www. hilleltournament. com, Executive Board member of Terps for Israel, Campus Representative for Masa Israel Journey At Beth Tfiloh, I was given the necessary resources to explore my Jewish identity and discover my role in the larger Jewish community. Using what I learned at BT, I have involved myself in Maryland Hillel with the purpose of not only creating my own Jewish community, but building a new one for others to be a part of. HENRY SHOLK ‘11, University of Michigan - Since coming to Ann Arbor, the Jewish community at the University of Michigan has become my new family. Motivated and inspired by my 16 years at BT, I have placed a strong emphasis on dedicating time and energy to my new Jewish community. During my sophomore year, I served as the social action coordinator at Michigan Hillel and I just completed my term as Vice Chair of the Hillel Governing Board where I was responsible for determining Hillel policy, overseeing the direction of Hillel as an organization, and making major programming decisions for the University of Michigan Jewish community. Additionally, I have played an active role in WolvPac (Michigan’s AIPAC group) and TAMID Investment Group. BT’s emphasis on tikun olam and an individual’s role in making our world a better place also encouraged me to pursue a minor in social work where I learned how I can make sustainable and
positive change in communities across the US. Without BT, I would not be the young leader in the Jewish community that I am today. I am very excited to bring all my experiences, both from BT and Michigan, to Chicago next year! OLIVIA MAUER ‘15, College of Charleston - After graduating from BT and attending the College of Charleston, I quickly realized how strongly Beth Tfiloh rooted my Jewish identity in me. Growing up in the halls of BT for 15 years I knew I wanted to make Jewish friends and continue Jewish learning in college. As soon as I committed to College of Charleston the Hillel reached out to me, making me comfortable. My Hebrew class is in the Hillel Building so I am able to stay up to date on events and activities. I am looking forward to the January opening of the beautiful NEW Hillel vegetarian/kosher dining hall, a great option especially during the holidays.
