Defining the Gold Standard of College Guidance
How do you define the “gold standard” for helping high school students navigate the stressful and bumpy road to getting into the college of their choice? In many ways, Beth Tfiloh’s College Guidance Department has created an ideal college guidance program that many, including BT alumni and admissions officers from the nation’s top universities, consider to be the “gold standard.” BT parents and interested members of the community learned the fundamentals of Beth Tfiloh’s College Guidance program at “Navigating the Road to College Acceptance,” a recent public forum held in the Mintzes Theatre. The program, moderated by Beth Tfiloh Director of Education college advocate-in-chief Mrs. Zipora Schorr, featured a panel discussion with BT’s four college guidance advisors.
“We are so proud of how much we do for our kids and the great success they achieve.”
Mrs. Zipora Schorr
Mrs. Schorr emphasized that the college guidance process’s overarching goal is to find the right school for each student. “We are so proud of how much we do for our kids and the great success they achieve,” remarked Mrs. Schorr. BT Director of College Guidance Mrs. Halaine Steinberg described the fouryear college guidance process, which begins in 9th and 10th Grades with exploration and investigation, and culminates in 11th and 12th Grades with implementation and applications. Mrs. Susanna Smith, Mrs. Caryn

Synagogue News Minyan Meyuchad: Bringing Shabbat to Special Adults Minyan Meyuchad, BT’s monthly Shabbat morning service for people with special needs, is a beautiful example of BT’s inclusion and respect for all Jews. Established 31 years ago, Minyan Meyuchad provides many of its participants their only access to Jewish services, and their families’ only opportunity to worship with their adult children. For the past 25 years, special educator Susan Coleman has run Minyan Meyuchad along with Cherie and Miriam “Bunny” Rosenberg, a fixture among Baltimore’s Jewish special needs community.
Sisterhood News The next Sisterhood meeting, on Tuesday, March 21, 7 pm in the Tuvin Hall, will feature a fresh approach to Passover cooking with a demonstration by Ora Imanoel. Learn some new recipes and ideas and then sample the mouthwatering results.
Our Gift Shop in the clergy wing offers graggers for Purim and distinctive Passover items. We also carry siddurim, children’s toys, our cantor’s CDs, and a fine array of gifts for B’nai Mitzvah and weddings. Special bulk orders of imprinted kippot are also available.
Save the Dates: On Sunday, April 30, Sisterhood will host a trip to the Newseum in Washington, D.C. This is a stunningly comprehensive collection and demonstration of newspaper publishing/printing and media preparations. It’s a great trip for everyone! On Sunday, May 21, we’ll bus up to New Hope, PA, and browse Peddler’s Village and its environs. For both of these jaunts, details will be supplied in upcoming bulletins. Still to come are a June exploration of the lovely Longwood Gardens and a Sisterhood “Meet the Author” dinner with Lauren Silberman.
Our next Board Meetings are February 8 and March 8.

Minyan Meyuchad members “recite familiar prayers, talk about the holidays and how they are celebrating, learn about Jewish concepts or Bible stories, and share important happenings in their lives,” Susan says. Participants each get a specially-designed siddur, used with the leader’s illustrated flipchart to help them understand the prayers. Susan or Bunny lead a discussion about the week’s parshah or an upcoming holiday. Youth Director Cherie Brownstein notes that many Minyan Meyuchad services have special themes related to upcoming holidays, and each service ends with a Shabbat lunch including birthdays celebrations. Over the years, several Minyan Meyuchad participants celebrated adult Bar or Bat Mitzvahs, something that many of their families never thought would happen. “Our most recent one was for a gentleman in his 60s. Even his extended family was incredibly excited to participate,” Susan shares. The Minyan Meyuchad B’nai Mitzvah are called up to the Torah for an aliyah and deliver a brief speech or prayer, according to individual ability. For Susan, Minyan Meyuchad Shabbat — usually the first Shabbat of the month — is her favorite one all month. “It is very rewarding to see how much the congregants enjoy the service and to know how much they have learned about Judaism. But even more so, I just enjoy being with the congregants. They bring a sincerity to their love of the service which is unique and inspiring to see.”

College Guidance
Continued from page 1
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY: BT faculty across all divisions recharged their academic batteries and enhanced their pedagogic skills at Professional Development Day. Taught by both colleagues and guest speakers, faculty learned about encouraging continuous exploration; building academic choice into their curricula; techniques for teaching kids with anxiety more effectively; mindfulness and yoga techniques in and out of the classroom, and more.
Lerman and Mrs. Loryn Strauzer described the key components of BT’s program: serving as a valuable and supportive resource for students and their parents; creating a college application list; college visits and interviews; writing the all-important college essay; and a high level of personal advocacy for each student. Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Strauzer, who both previously served on college admissions staffs, emphasized the importance of self-advocacy, as well as the advocacy that regularly takes place by BT faculty on behalf of our students. They explained how students can show “demonstrated interest” in a specific college, and why that can benefit an applicant. A highlight of the program was BT alumna Emma Silverman ‘16, currently a freshman at Brown University, who described her college guidance experience. She mentioned how Mrs. Steinberg helped her come up with a novel approach to her college essay, and encouraged her to personally meet college representatives. In response to a parent’s question about how Beth Tfiloh compared its program to that of other school’s, Mrs. Susanna Smith told her that there was no comparison: “I have to be honest, but in 25 years in this field I can guarantee that there isn’t another high school that does what we do.”

Thank You for a Match Made in Heaven! In early September 2016, Beth Tfiloh announced the BT Match – a group of donors who would generously match all new gifts and all gift increases to the 2017 Annual Campaign. Their goal was to catalyze significant Annual Campaign growth, raising more than $900,000 and adding 250 more families to our donor base. Accomplishing that would enable Beth Tfiloh School and Synagogue to grow their mission of creating a joyful, immersive and inclusive Jewish experience for our BT family. With your help, we’ve surpassed those goals! As of January 4, 2017: • Increase in Annual Campaign Funds Raised: BT’s 2017 Annual Campaign raised $900,000 — $100,000 from the BT Match dollars; another $100,000 are
from first-time or increased gifts. • Increase Annual Campaign Participation: 1,184 families donated to the 2017 Annual Campaign — 319 families made first-time BT Annual Campaign gifts or renewed their commitment to BT by making their first gift in more than a year; 477 families increased their Annual Campaign support. We are humbled by and grateful to our BT community for the enthusiastic and generous support of this extraordinary effort. You have once again risen to the challenge, providing the financial foundation for our entire community. Mark Gheiler, 2017 Annual Campaign Chair Emily Levin, Vice-Chair

Jason Broth volunteered to fight fires in Israel
A wonderful group of Beth Tfiloh members volunteered again this year to make a lasagna dinner, complete with salad and cookies, to distribute to women and children served by CHANA.
BT member, Jason Broth was one of 39 American firefighters who volunteered to assist Israeli first responders last fall when a rash of fires broke out in Israel. Jason, a member of the Pikesville Volunteer Fire Department, was joined by three other Baltimore firefighters: Scott Goldstein, Howie Cohen, and Sholom Reches. The Baltimore contingent was the first of the American first responders to arrive in Israel. While in Israel, the American firefighters were assigned to the Herziliyah fire station, where they responded to various emergencies and helped to give the Israeli firefighters much-needed backup and rest. Jason is a regular member of our weekly BT Minyan where he often leads davening. Jason and his wife Alicia are BT’s first alumni couple, having graduated from the Class of 1990. Alicia teaches the Three Year Old class in our Preschool. Their daughter Jocelyn graduated BT in 2015 and their son, Noah is a senior in our High School.
FIRE FIGHTER IN ISRAEL - Jason Broth volunteered as a fire fighter in Israel last fall.
Pictured below (left to right) are Betty Reichenberg, Marcia Leavey, Brenda Pariser, Joyce Stern, Marilyn Rosenblatt, Anne Pfeffer, Joe Rosenblatt, and Carol Oppenheim, who were joined by Shelley Kaye, Sandy Vogel (Mercaz Director) and Lindsay Gaister (Director of Social Action) CHANA Director Naomi Taffet wrote a letter of thanks, describing how the women who enjoyed the delicious meal with their children were moved to tears by this beautiful gesture, enabling these families to have a special Shabbat and feel supported by their community.

If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed into his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity.
