Women’s Shabbat to offer diverse program

B

eth Tfiloh will have a special Women’s Shabbat on Shabbat of February 8, coinciding with Shabbat Shira, the Shabbat when we read the “song at the sea” sung by the Children of Israel upon their deliverance from the Egyptians, and for which we celebrate the leadership of Miriam and all Jewish women. Our guest Shabbat scholar will be Dr. Chana German, Executive Director of The Lookstein Center for Jewish Education in Israel. Dr. German will give the weekly women’s parsha class at 9:55 am and then address the entire congregation at the end of davening. A special Women’s Shabbat Program will take place immediately following services for registered participants. The program will include a gourmet women’s lunch with Shabbat singing led by the Mezumenet women’s Jewish a cappella group from the University of Maryland, and guided table discussion topics. Following lunch, women are welcome to participate in one or more Shabbat afternoon programs, including a women’s

Breakout sessions will include text study led by Mrs. Chana Slavaticki, a choral workshop led by Mezumenut singers, Jewish games that train the brain (mahjongg and more), and a mindfulness approach to a more meaningful Shabbat with educational consultant, Nancy Siegel. Dr. Zipora Schorr will teach a late afternoon class “Mitzvah or Minhag, Choice or Obligation?”

The light of the Shabbat candles By Rabbi Dr. Eli Yoggev

Insights into the observance and meaning of Shabbat

When I ask students to list objects they associate with Shabbat, Shabbat candles are often at the top of the list. Why did the Sages (at the beginning of the 3rd century) institute candle lighting? Originally, this was to ensure the easy navigation of families around their homes back in an electricity-less era (Talmud Shabbat 25b). Dark homes don’t make for such fun Shabbat experiences! But this was never the sole reason. When one enters a home with special candles kindled in honor of the day, it lends a certain ambience and importance to the occasion. As one of my students once said: “I can feel the difference when we light candles as Shabbat enters.” But no less important is the symbolism the candles carry as we usher in the Shabbat, setting the tone for how we want our Shabbat to be. The burning flames symbolize the family warmth and togetherness we strive for over the upcoming day. They point upward, reminding us that we want this Shabbat to be one of growth and spiritual connectivity. Lastly, the candles spread light and joy for all to enjoy. We want this Shabbat to be one of happiness and enjoyment for us and our loved ones. May this Shabbat be one of light and joy for all. Shabbat Shalom!

MEET OUR MEMBERS Rena and Elliot Rank: “We love the friendships we have made”

The Ranks relocated to Baltimore 14 years ago. They sought a Modern Orthodox synagogue offering the level of religiosity in which they were raised and a “community of like-minded individuals in an environment of Judaic commitment and intellectual stimulation,” as Elliot described. Beth Tfiloh Congregation met their requirements and they joined. Rena holds a B.A. from Arcadia University and an M.S.W. from University of Pennsylvania. Rena taught Beth Tfiloh PreSchool’s 2’s class for eight years before returning to her social work roots. Today, she is a licensed social worker at the University of Maryland Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Photos by Bradley Images

Rena and Elliot Rank met in November 1981, in a set-up arranged by her friend, Joan, and his sister, Jackie. They dated for eight months prior to their engagement and were married in February 1983. They settled in West Hartford, Connecticut, where Elliot worked.

THE RANK FAMILY Left to right: Ben Rank, Elliot Rank, Jon and Alisa Murstein, Rena Rank, Leslie and Sam Rank, Caleb and Aaron Rank.

Elliot holds a B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota with a postdoctoral fellowship from the Baylor College of Medicine and is a certified diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology. Elliot is the director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at Quest Diagnostics in Teterboro, New Jersey.

The Ranks have many hobbies and interests: they love to travel; Rena loves preparing Shabbat and holiday meals for friends and family,; Elliot is an avid reader, a meticulous organizer, and an amateur chef and bartender who specializes in chicken soup, home-made pickles and corned beef, and the “best gin and tonic ever!”

CAMP NEWS

Meet new BT Camps director, Sam Bloom Last month, BT Camps introduced its new director, Sam Bloom. Sam brings 24 years of experience as a leader in both Jewish day camp and overnight camps, including 18 years as director of Emma Kaufmann Camp in Pennsylvania. Sam has not only earned a strong reputation within the camping community, but he has also shared his expertise with colleagues at a number of camping conferences across the country. Get to know Sam Bloom and the special brand of exciting energy he is bringing to BT Camps for Summer 2020. How did your career in Jewish camping begin?

sports camp, arts camp, etc.; update our instructional swim program; launch a golf program; and much more. BT Camps is known for its contagious ruach (spirit) and happy environment. How do you plan to build upon that to make this the “Best. Summer. Ever”?

Camp is fun. That’s what everyone says and that’s what everyone knows. But part of that fun, at a Jewish camp especially, is singing and dancing. And there is nothing better! We will continue to sing and dance and scream and shout and, most importantly, acknowledge that we are at a Jewish camp, and participate in beloved Jewish camp traditions. Every day.

My career started in 1988 BT Camps Director, Sam Bloom as the sports director at Emma Kaufmann Camp. Additionally, in my 32 years in camping, Sports, recreation and education was my I have spent time addressing my college major, so I thought, “Sounds like colleagues at camp conferences across the the right move for me now.” It was, and country, speaking about team-building, still is, 32 years later! creating a positive culture, and doing What has kept you in this field for more “the little things to make the big things than 30 years? happen.” These topics are also taught My love for working with children, teens, and experienced by our campers and staff, young adults, adults, alumni, parents and it’s what makes a camp great. and the Jewish community at large. But more importantly, because nothing beats making a difference in people’s lives. I wake up loving my job and loving camp. How would you describe the ideal Jewish day camp?

It’s the camp that starts their campers’ daily experience at the morning bus pickups, ends it at the afternoon bus drop-offs, and creates memories in between that last a lifetime. And also it’s the camp that has door-to-door bussing! What are some of the exciting new programs or offerings you plan to add to the BT Camps experience?

In addition to all of the fun activities that make BT Camps the best in Baltimore, this year we are bringing back KinderCamp; Theater Camp is now available to campers entering grades 9 and 10; and the STEAM camp options are better than ever this year. We are also going to add activities such as 9-squarein-the-air and pickleball; offer more water sports — including more swim time for

BT CHALLAH BAKE - Thirty future B’nai Mitzvah learned the art of challah baking with parents friends, and teachers. Each went home with their challot together with an understanding of the mitzvot and holiness that the challah holds.
