Bulletin THE BETH TFILOH

Navigating the Road from Purim to Pesach By Rabbanit Bracha Jaffe, Beth Tfiloh Community Educator

There is a well-loved Jewish saying: “Have a freilichen (happy) Purim and a kosher Pesach!” I grew up in Boston and I well remember the Bostoner Rebbetizin z”l who said it this way: “Have a kosher Purim and a frelichen (cheerful) Pesach!” The Rebbetzin had a wonderful message: Do not get so caught up in the frivolity of Purim that you lose focus on keeping the special Purim mitzvot. And more importantly: do not get so caught up in the preparations for Pesach that you would celebrate this holiday without cheer! You may ask: There is so much work and preparation. How can we make our Pesach experience freilich? Rabbi Jonathan Sacks notes that there are two Hebrew words to describe freedom: chofesh and cherut. Pesach represents these two concepts. Chofesh is “freedom from,” in our case from being enslaved by the Egyptians. This, however, is not enough! We still need cherut, which is the “freedom to” make our own choices. As a nation, we choose to maintain and deepen our unique, intimate relationship with God. We choose our Torah which is based on the twin concepts of tzedek u’mishpat – justice and compassion. As free people, we have the option to choose how we look at our lives and what to make of them. We can choose what to focus on and where to let go. This Pesach season ask yourself these Four Questions: 1. How do I want to feel in the weeks and days leading up to Pesach? 2. What do I need to do in order to appreciate and look forward to the Pesach holiday? Continued on page 3

3. Where are the places that my family and I have positive memories and experiences? 4. Where can I let go to allow this positivity to come through? When you are ready to make a shift here are some hot tips for the best way to come to the Seder in a cheerful frame of mind:

>Do not feel compelled to SPRING CLEAN! Dust and grime is not chametz. >Allow yourself to use some of the many options for Pesach-prepared foods, cake mixes, or other food preparation shortcuts.

>Make sure that your Erev Pesach schedule includes these two crucial activities: • Naps for everyone (yes – YOU too!) • A hearty meal after the nap >On Seder night…try to stay up for the songs at the end. They can be the best FUN at the Seder! May we all have a freilichen and kosher Pesach!

Selling your Chametz Because the rabbis realized that disposing of Chametz completely would involve a considerable financial hardship for many, they devised a process whereby a Jew could sell his or her Chametz to a non-Jew before Pesach and repurchase it after the conclusion of the holiday. This sale has been structured so that the non-Jew will find it in his or her best interests to resell the Chametz after Pesach. Because this sale involves many technicalities, it has been traditional for the rabbi of the congregation to act as the agent for those who sell their Chametz. Everyone who prepares his or her home for Pesach should arrange with the rabbi to sell their Chametz. This is effectuated by signing a Statement of Authorization (Shtar Harsha’ah), which may be done anytime prior to midmorning on Friday, March 30. The authorization form below meets the Halachic requirements and should be delivered to the Congregation Office in order that Rabbi Wohlberg may receive it prior to Friday, March 30.

If you own Chametz in several places, such as your home and a vacation home, include all of the addresses. It is customary to make a contribution in connection with the selling of Chametz. Please make your check payable to the “Beth Tfiloh Charity Fund” to assist the many needy individuals in the Baltimore area who will not be able to properly observe the

Today, the Hervitzes are a BT Dorot family — alumni whose children follow in their BT school footsteps. Marco ‘33, who attends BT PreSchool, is in “perpetual motion.” He loves to sing, play the guitar, dance, paint, build towers out of Magna-Tiles and wrestle with his brother. Joah, who will start BT

PreSchool soon, is “non-stop fun.” “He loves to help bake, get into mischief with his brother, make us laugh every chance he gets, and to cuddle with his Mommy and Daddy!” shares Vicki. Becoming BT Synagogue members was a “natural choice,” according to Vicki. “Growing up, BT was a home away from home for both of us, instilling a commitment to Jewish values and that we now wish to share with our children,” Jesse says. “We are thrilled that our boys will have the chance to experience so many of the same personally fulfilling and religiously enriching childhood experiences that we were so fortunate to have ourselves.” The Hervitz boys enjoy many adventures at shul each week. “Marco runs onto the Bimah in the Dahan Sanctuary to open the ark in the middle of davening or eats apple sauce out of the communal Kiddush bowl,” says Vicki, while “Joah crawls around the lobby, chasing after Marco.”

VICKI & JESSE HERVITZ with sons Joah and Marco.

When they’re not at BT, the Hervitz family loves to go on hiking adventures as a family, reading, throwing family dance parties, playing basketball, and rooting for the Steelers (but we won’t hold that against them), and getting together with their BT friends!
