Celebrating the Joy of Judaism, Embracing all Jews. ADAR I-ADAR II 5779 MARCH 2019
Unity Shabbat builds bridges and creates lasting memories Amazing. Inspiring. Moving. Emotional. Wonderful. Meaningful. A first. Uplifting. Memorable. Historic. These are some of the
descriptions we have received from our members who attended our Unity Shabbat service on January 26th in tribute to and in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“The positive energy was palpable, and you could really 'feel the love' in the Sanctuary.” -Emily Levin
“I have never received such an enthusiastic response to a Shabbat service,” said Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg. “It has been beyond anything I could Our Shabbat service was followed have anticipated.” Here are a few of the by remarks by both Rabbi Mitchell Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg & Reverend Dr. Terris King comments received from BT members Wohlberg and Reverend Dr. Terris King, and from our visitors from Liberty Grace. pastor of the Liberty Grace Church of God, who referred to each other as “my brother.” In addition, members of the Linda Howard remarked, “It was beautiful to watch both Singing Sensations Youth Choir joined together with Beth children’s choirs sing together.” Aaron Levinoff agreed: “It Tfiloh Lower and Middle School students to sing “I Have Continued on page 4 a Dream,” a song dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., composed and directed by our own Mr. Brian Singer, including English and Hebrew lyrics. BE TH TFILOH DAHAN COMMUNIT Y SCHOOL A NNUA L SCHOL A RSHIP E VE NT Perhaps one of the most emotional moments was when Dr. King asked everyone to take a moment to reach out to each other in friendship and tell each other, “It's going to be ok.” THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2019 | 7:30 PM Nearly every one of the more than 1,000 individuals present rose from their seats and began shaking hands and embracing each other amidst both smiles and tears.

Unity Shabbat
Continued from page 1
was one of the most moving Shabbat services I've been to at BT… I had tears in my eyes watching as the kids sang together.” Many were also moved by the interactions between the BT and Liberty Grace members. “Watching the mingling of the congregants and visitors as Rev. King encouraged people to greet each other was an incredible sight and sound. Nary a person remained seated during that interaction. It was heartwarming and a true sign of the friendly and inclusive nature of our synagogue,” said Sheri Knauth. Emily Levin wrote, “The positive energy was palpable, and you could really 'feel the love' in the Sanctuary.”
“I have a different respect for the Jewish religion now.”
-Rodney Langley, Liberty Grace member
Others, like Helen and Jerry Gordon, summed up the impact of the day in a few words: “OUTSTANDING — a dream that came true – Congratulations.” Eugene Lippman described the service as “Exciting, exhilarating, a feel-good feeling, spirited, and warm.” Phyllis Green, from Liberty Grace Church, wrote a beautiful note to us. “In anticipation of our visit to Beth Tfiloh we did not know what to expect but were greeted warmly and hospitably. Most of us have never seen a bar mitzvah or been to a Shabbat service. After the children sang, we noticed that some of the women of Beth Tfiloh seemed overwhelmed by emotion just as we were when Pastor King asked us to greet each other in love... For my husband, 9-yearold granddaughter Stacie and I, it was a beautiful experience and one that we will never forget.” Liberty Grace member Rodney Langley shared his sentiments: “I have attended several Jewish weddings but never a Shabbat service. I really enjoyed the rabbi and the cantor. The entire service was very inspirational... I have a different respect for the Jewish religion now... The fellowship after services was 4
like ice cream on top of hot apple pie. We got to meet one-on-one with each other to find out that we all are just God’s people.” As the wonderful memories of this special Shabbat lingers, Beth Tfiloh and Liberty Grace Church are continuing to explore common projects that we can work on together to build on the relationships that have been created and spread goodwill within our communities. “Unity Shabbat brought together two communities that would likely never have come together in the beautiful way it did on Shabbat!” reflected Holly Venick, BT’s Director of Synagogue Life. We look forward to sharing information about future initiatives that will benefit from this special partnership soon.

Meet Our Members Renata and David Kepner: Keeping BT in the Family Renata (Isaacson) Kepner ’00 has been a member of BT Congregation since she started attending BT Lower School. So as soon as she and David got married, they joined as a couple. “David and I come from very different Jewish communities and upbringings, but we both found BT to be a warm and welcoming place for both of us and our family,” said Renata, who is a graphic designer at Jhpiego. “The diversity of people and backgrounds that come together here is unique and special.”
BT Young Professionals dress-up at home. At shul, the kids love seeing their friends and getting special treats that Rabbi Wohlberg gives on the bima each Shabbat. Outside of BT, the Kepners enjoy a weekly family game night. “We play everything from UNO to Family Trivial Pursuit to putting together 1,000 piece puzzles,” shared Renata. “We love being outside, creating new inventions with recycled materials, and drawing or coloring together before bed.” But what the Kepners truly love is something they can’t get anywhere other than at Beth Tfiloh: seeing their children grow and thrive in BT’s supportive environment. “We love how the synagogue continues to grow and evolve just as we do,” said Renata. “There is a place for everyone at any age. It is a unique synagogue that we feel so fortunate to be a part of.”

But he didn’t fully understand the attachment until their children, Noah and Hannah, arrived and were ready for preschool. “We had a chance to tour and see up-close what a special community and school BT is,” David said. “We agreed that no other place would give our kids the support, encouragement, and Jewish learning that we have here. It is a lifelong gift we are proud to offer them.” Noah, a BT second grader, also loves playing soccer and learning about all types of sports. Kindergartner Hannah is a budding actress and loves playing 8
