Selling your Chametz Because the rabbis realized that disposing of Chametz completely would involve a considerable financial hardship for many, they devised a process whereby a Jew could sell his or her Chametz to a non-Jew before Pesach and repurchase it after the conclusion of the holiday. This sale has been structured so that the non-Jew will find it in his or her best interests to resell the Chametz after Pesach. Because this sale involves many technicalities, it has been traditional for the Rabbi of the congregation to act as the agent for those who sell their Chametz. Everyone who prepares his or her home for Pesach should arrange with the Rabbi to sell their Chametz. This is effectuated by signing a Statement of Authorization (Shtar Harsha’ah), which may be done anytime prior to midmorning on Monday, April 10. The authorization form below meets the Halachic requirements and should be delivered to the Congregation Office in order that Rabbi Wohlberg may receive it prior to Monday, April 10.
BT SEDER EXCHANGE: ISO Seder hosts and guests The Seder is one of the most beautiful Jewish home rituals, filled with the many festive symbols and sounds of the Passover holiday, and the Mitzvah of retelling the exodus from Egypt. Passover holiday without some financial assistance. Your generosity will be most appreciated. REMINDER - Please wait a brief period after the end of Passover before using your Chametz in order for Rabbi Wohlberg to have sufficient time to repurchase it on your behalf. The Levins want more families to benefit from an outstanding BT education, but for many families that requires financial assistance. That desire has inspired Emily and Scott to co-chair SPOTLIGHT 2017, the school’s annual scholarship fundraising event. “We feel incredibly honored being asked to take on this leadership role. We appreciate the opportunity to give back to Beth Tfiloh in such a meaningful way,” Emily says. She recalls being a first-time BT PreSchool mom, back in 2001. “We weren’t really aware of Spotlight back then, much less the profound impact it has on every single person at BT.” THE LEVIN FAMILY: Scott, Shayna, Emily and Ryan
“When the entire BT community supports SPOTLIGHT, we are enriching the lives of others, and in turn our own, by enabling more children to receive the gift of a Beth Tfiloh education.” — Emily Levin “Whether or not families are direct recipients of scholarship dollars, we are all beneficiaries of Spotlight,” Scott comments. Nearly 50 percent of BT School families receive some level of financial assistance; without the BT community’s support of SPOTLIGHT, “there would be half the number of students in our children’s grades,” he adds. Scott and Emily aren’t the only ones excited about their SPOTLIGHT leadership roles. Ryan, a BT “lifer” and basketball and varsity lacrosse player shares his pride in his parents’ involvement. “They are the best role models for Shayna and me and I admire all of their hard work and dedication,” said Ryan. “They both work hard and still make time to do mitzvot for everyone’s Continued on page 9

Development News The S. Harold and Mimi Cohen Scholarship Fund: Keeping the Light of Jewish Education Burning Pass by the Epstein Chapel around 4 pm Monday through Friday and you are likely to find lifelong Beth Tfiloh Congregation member Ivan Cohen standing in the Epstein Chapel’s doorway, waiting to pick up several of the five Cohen children as their Beth Tfiloh school day ends. On Shabbat, he and his wife, Melissa, daven in the BT Minyan in the Chapel while their kids participate in BT’s various kids’ services. The Cohens’ BT connection dates back to Ivan’s parents, S. Harold and Mimi, who joined Beth Tfiloh soon after they married. The couple later enrolled Ivan in BT’s Hebrew School, understanding the importance of giving children a Jewish education. Harold, who co-owned the family’s business, Majestic Distilling Co., was “a philanthropic person,” according to Ivan. “He always helped out anybody who needed it.” Harold was also the BT Brotherhood’s president, “always involved in selling tickets for the donor dinner — you could not say no to him.” Mimi followed in Harold’s philanthropic footsteps, immersing herself in Jewish communal volunteer leadership. During her tenure as a HIAS board member, Mimi traveled several times to

After Harold’s passing in 1990, the BT Brotherhood established the S. Harold Cohen Scholarship Fund to benefit Beth Tfiloh’s School scholarship fund. Ivan remarks on how Harold’s Hebrew name, Shalom Tzvi, which means “peaceful dear,” truly em-
“Miriam was graceful in her approach to the issues but never reluctant to discuss the difficult, often disturbing issues that CHANA frequently confronts,” says CHANA Executive Director Nancy Aiken. “Nothing shocked her but everything concerned her and she turned that concern into action, sharing ideas, time and her financial resources.” Mimi passed that commitment on to her children and grandchildren, who coordinate and deliver meals for CHANA clients every week.
“When I was young I would see my parents going to shul every Shabbos and wonder why. Now that I am older, I know why: it is the community, the school and the whole organization”

bodied his nature. “That was my father, a man of peace — he always remained calm. My father was blessed to leave a lasting memory on many people and they honored him with the naming of the scholarship fund.”
At BT, where Mimi also served on the board from 1987-90, the couple found lifelong friends “who supported them through the good and bad times,” Ivan says. They also connected to Rabbi Wohlberg, whom they loved and respected greatly. “I am sure it was through his ‘gentle’ persuasion that they became lifelong donors to BT,” he laughs.
Mimi and S. Harold Cohen
Ivan and Melissa’s family has inherited those deep BT bonds. “When I was young I would see my parents going to shul every Shabbos and wonder why. Now that I am older, I know why: it is the community, the school and the whole organization,” says Ivan.
“We oftentimes describe someone who is unique as being ‘one of a kind, but Mimi and S. Harold Cohen are that rare combination of ‘two of a kind!’” says Rabbi Wohlberg. “They both were as good as they come; giving, caring, sharing, loving. Their family and the Beth Tfiloh family were enriched and uplifted by them. I knew them both very well.
— Ivan Cohen
Last year, after Mimi’s passing, her name was added to the fund. The addition symbolizes the couple’s joint commitment to and great love for Jewish education—which Ivan and Melissa’s children enjoy at BT today. And although they never knew their grandfather, Ivan thinks that seeing their grandparents’ names throughout the school building reminds his children of the special people their grandparents were, and of the happy memories of their grandmother. Nearly 100 tickets for the evening were sold within just the first 12 hours. Sponsors of $1,800 or more will enjoy an elaborate pre-event VIP Dinner Reception; a dessert reception for all guests will follow the performance. But even with all the evening’s excitement, what SPOTLIGHT is really about is strengthening the BT community, as Emily explains: “When the entire BT community supports SPOTLIGHT, we are enriching the lives of others, and in turn our own, by enabling more children to receive the gift of a Beth Tfiloh education.”
Jason and Alicia Broth, our very first BT alumni couple, helped promote Warrior Day.
Alumni Warrior Day On February 23, 2017, the Beth Tfiloh alumni community came together for our annual Warrior Day—a day where we show our BT pride by making a gift to the annual campaign, and promoting support of our alma mater via social media. This year’s Warrior Day was a tremendous success. With support from the alumni council, and class captains, we secured 77 gifts and $4,453. Much of our success can be attributed to the generosity of the Sellman family who matched every Warrior Day gift, along with the surprise of another BT family’s support, matching the Sellman’s match! The theme of the day quickly turned in to “make your triple gift today!” We have nearly reached our Alumni Campaign goal of 300 gifts – we are currently at 287! Let’s go Warriors! 9
