School News New Lower School Principal appointed Dr. Zipora Schorr recently announced that following a nationwide search, Dr. Susan Holzman Biggs has been named principal of Beth Tfiloh Dahan Lower School.
Dr. Susan Holzman
As previously announced, Mrs. Nina Wand and Mrs. Susan Yurow have made the very carefully considered decision that this will be their last year in their capacity of principal and assistant principal at Beth Tfiloh. They will work with Dr. Holzman this summer to ensure a smooth transition, and have assured us that we can continue to count on them as the valuable resources that they are. Dr. Holzman comes to us from the Flint Hill School in Fairfax, Virginia,
considered one of the D.C. area’s most prestigious schools. She holds a doctorate in education and human development from Harvard University, and a master’s in reading from Harvard. Dr. Holzman has demonstrated outstanding leadership in education, and is respected as an award-winning and collaborative educational leader and mentor. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Holzman has been an active member of her synagogue, where she has served as a member of the executive board, religious school committee, and family education committee, among others. Dr. Holzman’s own words tell the story best: “Beth Tfiloh’s reputation as a remarkable, close-knit community that embraces excellence and treasures individuals resonates with my lifelong passion for children, their families
and their education. When I read Beth Tfiloh’s mission statement with its dual focus on the individual and academic excellence, I felt a unique kinship to the school.” We are pleased that Dr. Elana Weissman will be expanding her administrative role, providing support and assistance to Dr. Holzman in the areas of professional development, student services, and the social and emotional well-being of our children. Dr. Schorr acknowledged the efforts of Dodi Samuel, a representative of the Board of Trustees, who played an important role in providing input during the search process. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Holzman to the BT family as the newest member of our school’s outstanding staff of professionals.

Merissa and Ben Kogutt: Making Themselves at Home at Beth Tfiloh “We knew that we made the right choice about joining BT the very first day we arrived in Baltimore,” said Merissa Kogutt. She and her husband, Ben, and their children — Adira, age 7, Arielle, age 4, and Micah, turning 2 in May — moved to Baltimore in July 2017. “When we discovered that we would be moving to Baltimore, we looked at BT as a school and after touring the school in February 2017, we started to really get excited for the move,” said Merissa, an attorney. After reading the shul’s welcome packet and seeing the shul’s impressive array of programs and services for both adults and children and its warm, welcoming community, joining the synagogue was a “no brainer.” “The synagogue made it so welcoming and easy to join the synagogue once we heard we were moving, it just made so much sense. Then we completed the trifecta and signed the kids up for BT camps.” That first day in Baltimore, Merissa drove Adira to BT camp just to look around. Despite knowing no one there, Adira decided to stay for the rest of the day at camp and come home on the
bus. “When we picked her up at the bus stop, Adira had the BIGGEST smile on her face and she said that she had the best day ever. We were floored and knew right away that BT was a special place to be,” said Ben, a fellow in maternal fetal medicine at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Now that they’re settled in Baltimore, the Kogutts love coming to BT each week. “We love the children’s programming. We love that our kids are excited to go to synagogue every Shabbat,” shared Merissa, adding, “They love that they get to see their friends from school, the delicious kiddushes and all of the fun programming!”

Because the rabbis realized that disposing of Chametz completely would involve a considerable financial hardship for many, they devised a process whereby a Jew could sell his or her Chametz to a non-Jew before Pesach and repurchase it after the conclusion of the holiday. This sale has been structured so that the non-Jew will find it in his or her best interests to resell the Chametz after Pesach. Because this sale involves many technicalities, it has been traditional for the rabbi of the congregation to act as the agent for those who sell their Chametz. Everyone who prepares his or her home for Pesach should arrange with the rabbi to sell their Chametz. This is effectuated by signing a Statement of Authorization (Shtar Harsha’ah). Our online authorization form meets the Halachic requirements and should be completed by Thursday, April 18. If you own Chametz in several places, such as your home and a vacation home, include all of the addresses. It is customary to make a contribution in connection with the selling of Chametz. Please make your check payable to the “Beth Tfiloh Charity Fund” to assist the many needy individuals in the Baltimore area who will not be able to properly observe the Passover holiday without some financial assistance. Your generosity will be most appreciated. REMINDER - Please wait a brief period after the end of Passover before using your Chametz in order for Rabbi Wohlberg to have sufficient time to repurchase it on your behalf.
Sell your Chametz at bethtfiloh.com/pesach Pre-Pesach Chametz Drive April 8 – April 16 BT Cares will be collecting non-perishable food that is not expired to donate to community members in need. Please drop off all donations in boxes or bags in bins located in the Lower School Lobby, High School Lobby, or Administrative Entrance. Questions? Contact Lindsay Gaister: lgaister@btfiloh.org.
