Bulletin THE BETH TFILOH
A Special BT Experience at AIPAC Policy Conference By Mr. Phil Jacobs, High School Jewish History teacher
When more than 35 Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community High School students converged on the AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington, DC, it might have been easy to just be a small part of the high-energy pro-Israel confab that attracted some 18,000 to the Washington Convention Center and the Verizon Center. Instead, BT Middle School Principal Rabbi Yehuda Oratz turned what could have easily been a wonderful spectator experience into a memorable learning laboratory. I was fortunate to serve as faculty support for the Saturday night through Tuesday experience with BT Hebrew Department Chair and beloved shaliach, Mr. Haggai Lavie. Indeed, included in the capacity crowds were some 4,000 high school and college students. Speaker after speaker commented on the number and enthusiasm of the young people in attendance. We heard from an allstar cast of stars from the bi-partisan political constellation such as Vice President Mike Pence; U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley; both Maryland Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen; Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and others. Speaking to us remotely from Israel was Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Each and every speaker underlined the important connections between the United States and Israel. As a former Jewish newspaper editor, I am no stranger to AIPAC’s critically important mission. Indeed, it was an AIPAC Policy Conference some years ago that taught the rest of the world exactly how Iran would seek to militarize nuclear weapons. And its words became prophetic.

Meet our Members Joseph Schwartz is unquestionably a BT “regular.” His parents, Stacy and Louis Schwartz, joined BT when he was in PreSchool “to provide me with a Jewish education and identity, with an equal focus on secular studies. They knew that Beth Tfiloh would provide us with a warm, nurturing, environment to grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually,” said Joe. After grad-uating from BT in 2012, Joe became a BT member in his own right where he regularly attends Shabbat services, and helps to lead Youth Services. A 2016 graduate of the University of Maryland, Joseph works for Under Armour where he is a member of the Global Sourcing team which oversees the entire footwear production process. Since his Junior year at BT, Joe has been involved in the Baltimore County Fire Department, where he currently volunteers at both Chestnut Ridge and Pikesville, as both a Firefighter and
Emergency Medical Technician. Joseph especially values the comradery and friendship amongst the FD community as well as the opportunity to work with people from different backgrounds. One of Joe’s most unique BT memories came on his 2012 Senior trip to Poland and Israel, at the Auschwitz II-Birkenau death camp. “Our last stop in the camp was at the Pond of Ashes, where the ashes of tens of thousands of victims remain. There, led by Mrs. Schorr, our class said Kaddish and joined in song, before beginning the long walk out of the camp. As we walked, I found myself in a deep conversation with my good friend Ian Lever. While we reflected on our experiences, the focus of our conversation quickly shifted to the 1.1 million Jews who had once stood on this same ground, unable to walk out. We decided to backtrack slightly, returning to the very end of the iconic train tracks that led into the camp. We resumed the

School News AIPAC Conference
Continued from page 1
This time around, for me the most lasting memories of this Policy Conference didn’t come from a stage or a mammoth video screen. Instead, the conversations, the debates and the dialogues over House and Senate resolutions among our BT students — be they sitting between speakers at Verizon Center or walking between venues — brought the real impact of the Conference home to me. It gave me great joy to stay up late and watch our students prepare their talking points for their day of Capitol Hill lobbying. They wrote, scratched out and then rewrote until they felt they could present with clarity a discussion with a Congressman or a Senator. I had to smile when walking through a House
office building corridor when I heard student Tali B. ‘19 whispering over and over to herself. She was going over the lobbying points she’d soon be making to U.S. Rep. Glenn “GT” Thompson, R-Pa., on the importance of continuing U.S. aid to Israel. Thompson, who filled his office with BT students, spoke to Tali and to the rest of the students as an adult speaking to other informed adults. The same happened when student Ben S. ‘20 stood and addressed U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes, D-Md., again before a packed conference room. I have “pictures” in my mind of students Noah F. ‘20 and Ezra S. ‘20 fearlessly approaching the same elected officials we see regularly on the nightly news, extending their hands and introducing themselves as Beth Tfiloh students. I have a wonderful memory
LAG B’OMER:2017
of Maryland’s senior U.S. Senator Ben Cardin hugging his great-nephew Mitchell C. ‘17, a Beth Tfiloh student. And it was amazing for the students to be in the same room with many Beth Tfiloh congregants and Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg as he hosted Michael Oren, Israel’s former U.S. Ambassador. The continuity among Beth Tfiloh’s adult delegates, some of them community leaders in their own right, connected them inextricably with the upcoming younger generations of leaders. Every morning, the group would be up for 6:30 a.m. davening and then approach the day’s agenda with urgency. There were meetings where I could look around and see only Beth Tfiloh students among the many adults. Over the years, the school has raised the bar of student understanding of the importance of AIPAC and the respect for the adults who work so diligently on behalf of Israel.

I firmly expected the students to fall quickly asleep on the bus ride back to Beth Tfiloh after the Policy Conference came to a close. But again, I shouldn’t have been surprised at this point. They were buzzing all the way about the experiences they just had. I know I’m being repetitive when I write this, but I covered AIPAC Policy Conferences as the Jewish Times editor. I can say this was the most gratifying experience ever, looking at the confab through the eyes of our students. I’m grateful to Mrs. Zipora Schorr, BT’s Director of Education; Rabbi Oratz and Beth Tfiloh for this special opportunity!

“We had a lot of religious, observant families and secular families. Beth Jacob was a wonderful place to be, very heimishe. A lot like BT.” - Arnie Goldberg much about davening on those Shabbat mornings. Following services, the family would go to their grandparents’ house for Shabbat lunch and family time. BETH JACOB & BETH TFILOH: A NATURAL MATCH Both brothers attended Beth Jacob’s renowned Hebrew School program, where they learned about the weekly parshah (Torah portion), tefillah (prayer), and Jewish holiday laws and customs. Most importantly, they learned the meaning behind those holidays. As adults, both brothers returned to Beth Jacob to spend quality time with their father – Larry for weekday Shacharit services, and Arnie for Shabbat services. Arnie quickly became an active shul member, moving from the Brotherhood board chair up to the congregation chairman. Beth Jacob’s membership was diverse, according to Arnie. “We had a lot of
The similarities made a merger between the two shuls a natural match as Beth Jacob’s membership numbers declined. The transition was smooth, with former Beth Jacob members immediately feeling welcomed by their newly extended family.
JEWISH EDUCATION: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE As part of the merger, BT renamed its Hebrew School “Beth Jacob Hebrew School at Beth Tfiloh,” commemorating and celebrating Beth Jacob’s legacy of and commitment to educating Jewish children. That legacy lives on today not only through the Hebrew School, but also through the support of Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School by the nearly 300 former Beth Jacob members at this year’s Spotlight annual scholarship event. Arnie and his wife, Dorathy, saw that outstanding education in action at a recent breakfast for BT donors. Several High School seniors spoke about their experiences and shared their future plans. Dorathy was overwhelmed both by the students and the BT education that helped make them who they are.

You get Kenneth and Marcie Golberg z’l that here.” FOLLOWING IN THEIR PARENTS’ FOOTSTEPS Larry and Arnie’s parents, Kenneth and Marcie Golberg z’;, instilled in them a commitment to education, chessed and tzedakah. That commitment is what inspired them to take a leadership role in Spotlight 2017. Arnie remembers attending his first Spotlight event. When paying for his seats, the staff member apologized for not having better seats available. “This isn’t about the seats, it’s about the children,” he replied. “It’s not about the entertainment, or the food, or where you sit. It’s about our children – our children, not my children. That’s what my focus is.”
“When I look at the students who are graduating and where they are going — University of Maryland, Harvard, Yale, University of Pennsylvania — they’re getting a great education. It’s incredible,” says Arnie. SUPPORTING JEWISH EDUCATION THROUGH SPOTLIGHT But more than that, it’s who BT students become, as he explains: “These are the future leaders in the Jewish
